You Can Observe a Lot By Just Watching

Berra was the backbone of a New York Yankees dynasty that won 10 World Series championships -- the most in the sport's history.

He was born Lawrence Peter Berra, the son of Italian immigrants. One version has it that he earned the nickname "Yogi" from a childhood friend who said the snake charmer in a movie looked like Berra.

He dropped out of school in the 8th grade to help support his family by playing baseball, then later served in the U.S. Navy.

Before my time really, but still known.

1 In addition to his amazing reputation in Baseball, he left behind a series of quotes that will continue to confound and surprise humanity for ages to come.

Sadly, the future ain't what it used to be, without Yogi Berra in it...

2 Greetings:

I grew up in the Bronx of the '50s and 60s living about a mile north of Yankee Stadium. During the schoolyear we would shoot down to the stadium after school and the ushers would let us in to see that last couple of innings. Afterward, we would wait for the players to come out and Yogi was my favorite even though our family was a designated National League family soon to be abandoned by the Giants.

I once had a sweetheart who I had told that we were a team like Whitey (Ford) and Yogi (Berra). A couple years later, when I went for a rehash, she told me that when I first told her that that she knew she was Yogi.

Like her, Yogi was the best.
