Wife-Beating Football Player Freed While Single Mom Faces Three Years for Having A Handgun

Shaneen Allen legally purchased and carried a handgun in her home state of Pennsylvania. Her crime? She was carrying that handgun when she inadvertently drove across state lines into New Jersey.

While she still faces more than three years for that simple mistake, the same Judge and Prosecutor involved with her case set free the Baltimore Raven's Ray Rice.

Allen, a 27-year-old Philadelphia mother who says she mistakenly entered New Jersey with a handgun legally registered in her state, was not accepted into a pre-trial intervention program, unlike the former Baltimore Ravens running back who was caught on an elevator surveillance camera punching his then-fiancée and current wife. The disparate decisions, made by the same prosecutor and approved by the same judge, leave Allen facing more than three years in prison and Rice free, though disgraced.

Atlantic County prosecutor Jim McClain recommended Rice for the program in May, months after denying the single mother's application. And Superior Court Judge Michael Donio, who signed off on the agreement that spared Rice jail time, denied a motion by Allen's attorney to force McClain to reconsider.

The message is easy to spot - carrying a handgun is worse than knocking out your wife.

This is not the first time gun-control advocates have made such a distinction. Back in 2012, a liberal news site published an interactive map of legal gun owners. The original map showed the names and addresses of every registered gun owner in Westchester and Rockland counties in New York. (Under pressure, Lohud removed the interactive maps and replaced them with map images.) The map they would never publish? A map of registered child molesters.

1 Are you sure that Atlantic County prosecutor Jim McClain and Superior Court Judge Michael Donio haven't been influenced in some manner by the fact that Rice is a professional football player? Or maybe he has the resources to put up a better fight than a young woman with an ordinary job?

Sometimes officials bully people just because they can.

4 Greetings, DMartyr:

I know that this idea has gained some, perhaps too much, traction on the interweb, but other than the people involved, I don't get the connection except some people's need to criticize.

The bit of the Rice video that I saw seem to show that his now Mrs. took a swipe at his head or face before going into the elevator and once on board, it was she that closed on him. If that assessment is accurate, i can understand the local D.A. declining to prosecute because who or both would that be.

As to the woman with the gun, it seems that she did bring the weapon across the wrong stateline. If it goes to trial, there's the jury to overrule the D.A. Unfortunate, perhaps, but that's how the system is set up.

Trying to establish some profound linkage between these two incidents strike me as somewhat sophomoric.

5 Instead of the white sleeveless t-shirt, now the "Wife Beater" is an NFL uniform.

6 It seems that his, now, wife, is pissed because the big money gravy train is cut off.
