Couple Taken Captive in Afghanistan Appear in Video

Yahoo:

Relatives describe the couple, who wed in 2011 after meeting online, as well-intentioned but naive adventure seekers.

They once spent months traveling through Latin America, where they lived among indigenous Guatemalans and where Boyle grew a long beard that led some children to call him "Santa Claus." The couple set off again in the summer of 2012 for a journey that took them to Russia, the central Asian countries of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, and then finally to Afghanistan. With plans to return home in December ahead of Coleman's due date, they checked in regularly via email during their travels expressing in their writings an awareness of the perils they faced and toured the region, staying in hostels and their tent.

The communication abruptly ended on Oct. 8, 2012, after Boyle emailed from an Internet cafe in what he called an "unsafe" part of Afghanistan. The last withdrawals from the couple's bank account were made Oct. 8 and 9 in Kabul. Two months later, an Afghan official told the AP that the two had been abducted in Wardak Providence, a rugged, mountainous Taliban haven.

Well they have certainly lost weight. As well as the contents of their bank account. I wonder if they still believe...
They really and truly believed that if people were loved and treated with respect that that would be given back to them in kind," said Linda Boyle, Boyle's mother. "So as odd it as it may seem to us that they were there, they truly believed with all their heart that if they treated people properly, they would be treated properly."
Obviously they are being held for the money. Kidnapping is al-Qaeda's #1 way to raise funds. These foolish folks have handed themselves to the Taliban, for whom kidnapping and ransoming Kuffar is as right as rain.

We pray for their immediate and unconditional release, I mean since they have no money left. What's the point? Can't get blood from a turnip.

Should the US pay and encourage the kidnapping of other fools? No probably not. Unfortunately they are dependent on the mercy of the Taliban, which is in short support despite all that bismillah al raham al rahim bullshit.

1 How do you know it's not a ruse to help the Islamists? They are probably "believers".

2 Of course people are nice and good, for a certain definition of "people."

3 Man,
I wouldn't even consider day camping in the Rainier Valley of South Seattle. The Indigenous people in that area are somewhat hostile to "Westerners"
But man, Afghanistan? That's just asking for trouble isn't it?

4 Don't worry, Obama's on it. He has a few buckaroos left in the Bank of Guantanamo Bay

5 #1 Stephanie, The linked Yahoo/AP article states: "Rep. Duncan Hunter, of California, asked Obama in a letter this week why other Americans still in the custody of Afghan militants were not included in the negotiation".
Hunter lends credibility to the story and unfortunately sympathy (ugh). Begs the question, how many GITMO guests is this going to tempt Obama to return so he can finally have that ticker tape parade he craves so much.

6 Makes me think of Nick Berg, another naive do-gooder who actually thought he could trundle about a war-zone unencumbered. Ya know, if you are "nice" to people everyone will hold hands and play kumbaya. To some people, if a person is nice it's a sign of weakness. There are also crazy people out there and murderously crazy people out there. The Taliban are a great example of the murderously crazy.

7 Sorry, but I subscribe to the idea that, "Stupid Should Hurt".

8 A good case of Darwinism. The survival of the smartest and the culling of the stupid.

Posted by: Maria at June 05, 2014 01:33 AM

9 The fucktards are related to Omar Khadr's family. They are clear examples of darwin award nominee's.

10 Yes, they are decidedly stupid, but it does seem a bit like blaming the victims. I'll feel bad if these poor naive idiots are beheaded and left with their body parts scattered about. Being stupid doesn't justify a brutal death at the hands of monstrous psychopaths, which is really what the Taliban are, were, and will be again once they take over Afghanistan again.

11 Sometimes, it's just best to stand aside and let Darwin do his job.

12 It's a shame what happened to these two, but they brought this upon themselves by going to such a dangerous place just to go exploring.

Posted by: Hamilton at June 06, 2014 09:03 AM

13 a lot of things are punished in this life, but nothing is punished more harshly than stupidity.

but there's always some that gots to learn that the hard way.
