Worth the Watch: Vice on Syrian Conflict Spilling Over into Lebanon

Okay, so the other day I was complaining about Vice Media's report from Tripoli, Lebanon because there were al Qaeda flags everywhere and no one seemed to notice them. But I watched parts 3 - 5 today (really, just 25 minute long documentary that they split up and released in 5 parts) and they finally get around to talking about al Qaeda's presence in part 3.

So I'm going to go ahead and encourage readers to watch this. I'm still a little miffed by the overall narrative. It's pretty much standard 'war is bad, mmmkay' type stuff. And it's the Allawite Baathist who's complaining about al Qaeda, not the narrator who only mentions in passing near the very end that the militia commander he's been following for the past 25 minutes is a "kind of Islamist Tony Soprano". That's kind of annoying.

But, again, it's worth the watch because it shows something I've been saying for years (and which my Christian Lebanese brother-in-law hates to hear) which is this: Lebanon is a failed state, and a sh*thole of an excuse for a "country". When those in charge are not busy building coalitions with Shia terrorists, they're busy looking the other way as al Qaeda builds an army from the ground up.

The documentary seems to be saying that this neighborhood is a microcosm of what's going on in neighboring Syria. It is. But what most miss is that Syria is a microcosm of what's going on in the entire Arab world. Which is itself just a microcosm of what's going on in the entire Muslim world.

In 1996 Professor Samuel P. Huntington famously noted that "the borders of Islam are bloody". He was right. But what he failed to mention was that the rest of Islam, not just its borders, are also equally bloody.
