Congratulations to Australia for Electing Conservative Government

tony-abbot-mark-steyn.jpg

You might have missed this, but Australia just elected a new government headed by a truly conservative PM. How conservative is this guy? I was searching for news and found this picture of the new Prime Minister Tony Abbot (center) pictured next to .... Mark Steyn.

How cool is that?

He won running as an outspoken conservative in a country with compulsory election laws (yes, they make low information voters go to the polls) and by a landslide.

I think some of our politicians in the US could learn a thing or two. Here's some commentary from a British Tory sick and tired of the current Cameron government's wishy-washy, milquetoast toast, "moderate" style of governing:

As head of the Liberal/National coalition, he unseated a Labor government which had been in power since 2007. But here's the rub: Mr Abbott stands for all the things which, in this country, the Cameroons repeatedly claimed would make the Conservative Party unelectable.

An Oxford-educated devotee of the late Lady Thatcher, Mr Abbott wants to cut taxes and is against gay marriage, thinks man-made global warming theory is bunkum, wants to reduce immigration, and intends to end increases in overseas aid.

And on Syria?
For unlike President Obama and Mr Cameron, the new Australian PM understands that, in Syria, the alternative to the bad guys may be even worse guys.
Anyway, congrats to The Realist of Queensland and to any of our other Aussie readers.

1 The GOP is so infested with RINOs and others who don't mind BIG GOVT that it seems they are happy to see this Adminstration do things that enlarge government, violate Constitutional norms, and increase govt dependency. Too bad Boehner isn't Abbot.

2 You're welcome America. Come on, get out there and let Bronco know exactly what you think of his presidency at the mid term elections, and GOP's, find someone with balls of steel to run in 2016. How about Condoleezza Rice, if not for president at least as a running mate.

3 Condoleezza Rice? We heard the same crap about Powell and what happened there? Some things are bigger than political parties.

4 Spare me! In the US he'd be a Clinton democrat. Think Cameron with a ridiculous accent.

5 Rice is a rino. It's time for a conservative. Can one get the nomination? I doubt it, but if so, can they survive the backstabbing they will get from the GOP?

We did good getting rid of Mr. Rude and the ALP government.
Tony Abbott is quite conservative. He actually has moral values... oh the horror!! Yes I am an Australian woman. I was disgusted over the Gillard misogyny speech.
One thing I do like is that Tony Abbott described the situation in Syria as "baddies vs. baddies".

7 So, your party wins a national election and you become Prime Minister, you get to have your picture taken with Mark Steyn? How cool is that?

8 sorry but aren't both australian parties anti-gun? wake me up when a shooter and fish party member wins election otherwise your just getting some wishy washy middle of the roader that does more harm than good. Like McCain for instance. Norway elected a center right leader too. Looks like they ran on improving infrastructure, healthcare and schools by spending their oil money on that stuff. Uh yeah that is Norway's "conservative platform". Unless we can get people to vote for smart people like Ben Carson our planet is doomed to Idiocracy. So if it came down to Hilary and President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho I'm going with the guy with guns cause at least he has electrolytes.

@gilbert, I am getting sick of this crap about being anti-gun. In Australia it is a non-issue because we have not been a nation who feels the need to carry guns everywhere!!
Once again I have to give my own life story because my cousin was murdered by a gun owner. This kind of incident in one's young life (I was 12 when she died), has an impact. In my own circumstances I have used guns twice in my life!! A lot of Australians are just like me!!

At the same time I have always believed in Americans having their Second Amendment rights because I understand the history behind those rights.

Now let me set some of the record straight. First of all Australia does not have severe gun restrictions. That is an absolute myth!! If you want to own a rifle and use it at a rifle range then go get a licence. Some weapons were banned after Martin Bryant murdered more than 30 people at Port Arthur. That was the most horrific mass murder in Australia. We had a gun buy-back scheme and people were willing to hand in their weapons. What you might not know is that the gun ownership is back at the same levels as it was at the time of the Port Arthur massacre!!
The real problem we have in Australia happens to be ownership of illegal guns. We do in fact have a lot of gun related incidents and deaths tied up with bikie and drug gangs. Some of the Middle Eastern types have been illegally importing guns. I agree with any crackdown on the activities of this particular group of individuals.
Now get this straight, Tony Abbott is a conservative and that means he is not like John McCain. He is the opposite. I have confidence that for the moment Tony Abbott is not going to commit Australia to any action in Syria. If we had not changed government then we would find ourselves going along with Barry Soetoro.
I do not know how much you know about Australian politics but you certainly have the wrong idea about our new government and probably had the wrong idea about the old one. The old one, that is KRUDD/GILLARD/KRUDD was controlled by radical Marxists. That is how we ended up with a carbon tax.
First we attempt to get rid of the carbon tax and then we go for all of the other issues. We now have our best opportunity to get the out of control spending under control.
