Israel Drone Strike in Egypt Kills 5 Bad Guys

It looks like the new thugs in charge of Egypt are a little more pro-Israel than the last thugs. Normally you'd be hearing all sorts of blah-blah about Zionism, sovereignty, and other assorted bullshit:

An Israeli drone strike inside Egypt killed five suspected Islamic militants and destroyed a rocket launcher Friday, two senior Egyptian security officials said, marking an incredibly rare Israeli operation carried out in its Arab neighbor’s territory.

The strike, coming after a warning from Egypt caused Israel to briefly close Eilat airport Thursday, potentially signals a significant new level of cooperation between the two nations over security matters in the largely lawless Sinai Peninsula after a military coup ousted Egypt’s president. Egypt long has maintained that it wouldn’t allow other countries to use its territories as hotbed to launch attacks against other countries.

There has been a low-level conflict between the Egyptian government and militants in the Sinai for years now. The conflict even continued under Morsi, but has picked up heat in the past few months against the military junta.

From a purely pragmatic view, it makes sense that Israel and Egypt would cooperate in eradicating the common enemy. But things are rarely that simple in the Middle East, especially with rampant antisemetism trumping the normal cooperation that should exist between Israel and it's neighbors.

As it stands, states like Jordan and Egypt quite often do cooperate with Israel, but they have to do so in secret. Which is why it shouldn't be surprising that some Eyptian sources are claiming that it was an Egyptian drone that carried out the strike.

An Egyptian drone? Have we been giving/selling drone tech to the Egyptians? I hope not. It's far more believable that the Israelis did this and that the Egyptians, for domestic political consumption, are claiming it just so they don't look too friendly with the JOOs.

1 Makes me wonder why the Egyptians did not just use a F-16 to take them out. Did they ask the IDF so they did not have to pay the 75K-200K for the hellfire missile, even if they got it for free from the US arsenal they might not get another one. I am sure Israel doesn't care about the cost for the mission as they will be happy to do it. Is there something wrong with the F-16's that they could not scramble to do it or was it just easier for the drone to do it. Did they needed some surveillance to confirm the target before hand which is something the F-16 can not do.

2 Trevor we (you) pay for ALL Hellfire missiles.
Rusty the Egyptian military was/is/will be always the real power in Egypt and they are on the US payroll. Just like in the US politicians may come and go, but here the real power belongs to uber wealthy who pay for the campaign financing without which a politician will not win election
