There's a Joke in Here: "Al Qaeda Retreating from French ADVANCE"

Though, I still haven't thought of a good punchline:

French air strikes destroyed the home of the leader of an Al-Qaeda-linked group in northern Mali as French-led forces advanced Sunday on the Islamist stronghold of Timbuktu.

The overnight strikes in Kidal came 24 hours after French-led troops seized Gao, the most populated town in Mali's Islamist-controlled arid north, which is roughly the size of Texas.

How sorry is your insurgency when the French are kicking your ass?

1 I can just hear it now.......
"But......but......The Germans told us these guys were PU$$IES!!"

2 The French used to have the smallest book of war victories at one time: i/2 page. Seems like Al Qaeda is going for a record, and the French are redeeming themselves.

3 The French take a lot of ribbing but they have had a lot of success over the years. They just don't spike the football every time they have one. They do a lot of very "black" operations and have quite literally been kicking ass in Afghanistan over the years. Yeah, they screw up sometimes, too, and we always hear about that.

Don't sell them short.

4 based on a recent video of French youth specking out against tyranny and islam - I must say- the French has risen in my estimation!

6 I have to say that the French Foreign Legion is pretty damn good when it comes to desert wars! And know Algeria quite well.

They scored a good deal of credit with me if they beat back these bastards!

7 My hunch is they dont have the double impediment of Politically Correct ROE and media jackals that dog US and British forces at every step and turn.

Posted by: Axel at January 28, 2013 08:37 PM

8 Yea. Napoleon's army were pussies.
Which made the rest of Europe what? Double pussies.

Posted by: Big Al at January 28, 2013 08:39 PM

9 ....PLUS... dont forget the fighting isnt being done by French personnel exclusively, there being the Malian troops (maybe they arent pals of Al Qaida like their counterparts in Afghanistan and actually motivated to defeat them) and importantly the largely American, British and German soldiers of the Legion d'Etranger, including an armoured cavalry regiment.
The airlifting is being done by two RAF c17.

10 I think it's a given that the French and the Malis will gain control again. The question is what will happen later when they leave?

Posted by: Sal at January 28, 2013 10:35 PM

11 Differentiate between the French people and their political class. The French people fought like lions at Verdun. And, really, it's important to read how the French put the beat down on the Arabs in Algeria.

If the French politicians had the spine of their troops, Islam would today be a topic of university study in Algiers, and maybe not even an important topic.

12 Ya! The French were pussies in Vietnam. They ended up by packing it in and going home. Remind anyone of anyone with 5 times the population?
Face it. To some the Germans, the Brits and the French will never do anything right. Amazing how the Japanese are never at fault for anything. Why is that?

Posted by: Big Al at January 29, 2013 12:28 AM

13 The Arabs kicked Nappies but at Acco.
Um, try US=Acre, Israel

Posted by: Kafiroon at January 29, 2013 01:28 AM

14 @ #12: To the Chinese, the Japanese were responsible for the Rape of Nanking. To us here in the US, they were responsible for countless atrocities across the Pacific theater. As for us in Vietnam, the US didn't lose the war there, not militarily. We lost it politically when the people thru mass demonstrations forced the political leaders in this country to withdraw. It was two years after our withdrawal that the South Vietnamese then lost the war militarily.

Posted by: Moshe Ben Avram at January 29, 2013 07:51 AM

15 Are you referring to Acre, Palestine?

Posted by: Amo at January 29, 2013 07:52 AM

16 Yada, yada, yada. The United States left the same as the French. That is the point. I assure you I'm fully aware of what the Japanese did. If you wish to preach history you're barking up the wrong tree.
The point I will attempt to point out again. We hear the constant lamblasting of the Germans, French and Brits yet very little on the atrocities committed by the Japanese. Why? Because the Jews constantly remind us of what happened to them and not what happened to many more.
And for your info. It was Hitler who demanded that the Japanese cease in Nanking. If he didn't apply pressure on them hundreds of thousands more and perhaps many millions would have been slaughtered. The Japanese wished to depopulate areas of China and replace them with Japanese.
A group that constantly belays the Germans, French and Brits and later expects them to come to their aid isn't playing the right cards. Very few people (and no decision makers) are alive today. So what did they have to do with it? Why keep shoving things they had nothing to do with in their faces? What good could come from it?

17 Like most of the European soldiers I worked with, man for man the French are high quality. You've got to be pretty motivated to volunteer for military service in those societies, and the Legion is pretty brutally self selecting for it.
The French gov't tends to be totally fine with using force, they just don't want the upstart US to do it.

18 Sal @ 10- The same thing will happen when France leaves as will happen when we, or any civilized nation's forces leave any mohamadan country. Muslim Brotherhood/caliphate. So it is written, so it will be done. Unless, of course, civilized people remember we have testicles, and stomp mohamadism in the dust.

Posted by: EROWMER at January 29, 2013 01:02 PM

19 @17..Yes the Legion are as tough as nails....but its a mistake to say they are French.
I quote for a change:
"During the late 1980s, the Foreign Legion saw a large intake of trained soldiers from the UK. These men had left the British Army following its restructuring and the Foreign Legion's parachute unit was a popular destination. At one point, the famous 2eme REP had such a large number of British citizens amongst the ranks that it was a standing joke that the unit was really called '2eme PARA', a reference to the Second Battalion, the Parachute Regiment of the British Army."
Wikipedia I know but easy o hand.

20 Erowmer: The Muslims have gained control of every country they have went after in modern times. Of course, I freely admit they don't go after much. Modern nations have to be conquered in the political arena. Not by force of arms. The Muslims will continue to win over these countries in Africa and perhaps to a lesser extent in Asia. The third world will always fall to them because they welcome them. No need to go into why. Look at the United States and see who embraces Islam. Someone needs to tell me again what was gained in Iraq and what is to be gained in Afghanistan? Is the money being spent and the American lives being lost worth killing a few terrorists with million dollar drones? Haven't we learned that killing one only leads to three more popping up? Now because of Mali, America is moving to set up bases in Niger. We've greased the right palms and here we go again.
Better to come home and concentrate on defending America from internal as well as external enemies.
Stomp Mohamedism into dust? Even modern, educated, freedom loving Muslims aren't even thinking about leaving the teachings of Mohammed. Islam is growing even in modern societies.

21 The French take a lot of shit, and deservedly so, but the French soldier is not a wimp or a coward. Read Bernard Fall and weep. The soldiers were lead (oxymoron) by senile retards as they were in WWII. They were poorly lead and worse supported.

22 I have previously made a long and as I admitted exaggerated attack on the character of French people. However, I dont think Ive ever expressed an opinion on French martial ability. Assholes arent necessarily weeds, in fact possibly the reverse. I have lamented the fact of who they chose to fight inWW2 (the British more fiercely than the Germans) but not their ability (although the Royal Navy completely sunk the particularFrench fleet in a few hours, French sailors died gallantly in their wrong-headed refusal to surrender). I would think what everyone says above about their leadership is the case, as with many a military. Just look at that Maginot Line. Military leaders seem usually tofight the previous war losing lives in the present as a consequence.

25 Now a
recently unearthed diary reveals an unlikely rescuer of thousands of
Chinese: a German businessman living in China who was the leader of the
local Nazi organization.
The businessman, John Rabe, kept a
1,200-page diary that provides a rare third-party account of the
atrocities. In it, he writes of digging foxholes in his backyard to
shelter 650 Chinese and of repelling Japanese troops who tried to climb
over the wall, of dashing through war-torn areas to deliver rice, and of
stopping Japanese soldiers from raping Chinese women. He even wrote to
Hitler to complain about the Japanese actions.

26
The elimination of the Chinese POWs began after they were transported
by trucks to remote locations on the outskirts of Nanking. As soon as they
were assembled, the savagery began, with young Japanese soldiers encouraged
by their superiors to inflict maximum pain and suffering upon individual
POWs as a way of toughening themselves up for future battles, and also
to eradicate any civilized notions of mercy. Filmed footage and still photographs
taken by the Japanese themselves document the brutality. Smiling soldiers
can be seen conducting bayonet practice on live prisoners, decapitating
them and displaying severed heads as souvenirs, and proudly standing among
mutilated corpses. Some of the Chinese POWs were simply mowed down by machine-gun
fire while others were tied-up, soaked with gasoline and burned alive.

Nanking (now called Nanjing).

One of the last humans left alive after intense bombing during
the Japanese attack on Shanghai's South Station. August 1937.

After the destruction of the POWs, the soldiers turned their attention
to the women of Nanking and an outright animalistic hunt ensued. Old women
over the age of 70 as well as little girls under the age of 8 were dragged
off to be sexually abused. More than 20,000 females (with some estimates
as high as 80,000) were gang-raped by Japanese soldiers, then stabbed to
death with bayonets or shot so they could never bear witness.

27 Pregnant women were not spared. In several instances, they were raped,
then had their bellies slit open and the fetuses torn out. Sometimes, after
storming into a house and encountering a whole family, the Japanese forced
Chinese men to rape their own daughters, sons to rape their mothers, and
brothers their sisters, while the rest of the family was made to watch.
