Bloggers Not Buying GOP Spin on "Bipartisan" Amnesty Plan
Hugh Hewitt rejects the GOP's attempt to put lipstick on this pig:
A Disaster: The GOP Caves On Border Security... This is McCain's continuing gift to the GOP, and the immigration absolutists' legacy: Lots and lots of promises and no fence worth calling a fence. Aren't there 41 GOP senators willing to fight for border security? Apparently not. And they will see the result in their depleted coffers and diminished numbers come November '08. All they have to do is fight for border security, but they won't even do that.Paul at Powerline:
Any Republican candidate who is on board with the projected deal should receive no consideration from conservatives as a presidential nominee.I expect this theme to catch on pretty quickly. I understand McCain crowed about his role in crafting this amnesty bill at the GOP debate. Now John McCain has been in politics a long damn time, but like most of you, I've watched political suicide take place in front of me before, and that's what this looks like to me. This at a time when the Giuliani-social con marriage of convenience is looking to be headed toward counseling, and the social cons are putting out some pretty strong vibes that they're open to a new suitor. At this point, McCain's not in any position to capitalize on their discontent. Who'll gain the most from this dynamic? I say Huckabee. As she's known to do, Kate O'Bierne takes 'em out with a head shot:
My previous optimism about the Senate's inability to come up with a consensus plan that could win broad bipartisan approval obviously underestimated Republican senators' capacity for self-delusion.This is bad, folks--both for the effect it'll have on our country and the effect it could have on the GOP in 2008.
