Maj. Troy L. Gilbert Identified as Downed Pilot, RIP

UPDATE 09/19/2007: Al Qaeda in Iraq's Islamic State of Iraq front group release second Troy Gilbert video.

UPDATE: 12/4: The military has changed Maj. Gilbert's status to KIA after DNA tests the body at the crash site was that of Troy. Rest in Peace.

A fund has been set up in his honor. For info, see this post.

UPDATE: George found this photo of Maj. Gilbert. I think it only fitting that we put it on top. Above the image of the SOB pictured below and right. If any soldier in Iraq sees this guy, you know what to do. Rest in Peace.

F-16-downed-iraq2.jpgTo the friends and family of Maj. Troy L. Gilbert, our deepest sympathies and condolences. We pray that those who removed your sons body from the battlefield will find justice at the end of a Marine rifle.

Stars and Stripes

The Pentagon has identified the Air Force pilot who is listed as Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown after his fighter jet crashed Monday near Karmah, Iraq.

Maj. Troy L. Gilbert of the 309th Fighter Squadron out of Luke Air Force Base, Ariz., was piloting the F-16C when it went down about 20 miles northwest of Baghdad, Department of Defense officials said Wednesday.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, though U.S. military spokesmen in Iraq have said enemy fire likely was not a factor in the incident.

What appears to be the body of Maj. Troy L. Gilbert was shown on a video of the downed American F-16 in Iraq. I won't say it, but I think we're all pretty clear on what the jihadis will do with it. Which is why I hope they are found and killed. Before the video gets released.

Incidentally, the Islamic State of Iraq (formerly knows as the Mujahideen Shura Council), an al Qaeda umbrella group, claims one of their member organizations shot down the plane. Then again, in the same statement they claim to have shot down 6 Blackhawk helicopters, so question the reliability. Every time a helicopter goes down, whether by accident or not, they claim responsibility.

For now, we will file this in our hostage archives.

1 An asshole in a dress standing on a downed aircraft really doesn't scare me much.

Posted by: Greyrooster at November 29, 2006 05:45 PM

2 This touches me pretty close. My son is currently training for NAVY air. CAS is one of those things that any airman of the U.S. Military has to be prepared to do. When your brothers on the ground call you to the party, they really want you to dance...

The only way I can think of it is balls of steel. God bless you Sir... I will be thinking about you and all the other fallen this weekend while Army takes on Navy. I sit here and cheer, GO NAVY, but you will never be far from the front of my mind...

I wish comfort to your loved ones that you have not died in vain. And, if the Sandcrawlers took your body away, your soul was long since gone to heaven.

3 Friggin ghouls. Were the body snatchers moderate muslims?

Posted by: Greyrooster at November 29, 2006 07:21 PM

4 Rusty, if gregturd makes a comment on this post, forward me all the
info you have on him and I will hunt him down and let him watch while I
remove his skin.

5 Thanks for posting the story. We're just kind of in shock, Troy's loss is not one we expected here. He will be missed and please keep the family in your hearts this Christmas. We're scheduled to do the Christmas Tree Lighting this Saturday on base, it just ain't gonna be the same.

7 I want to send out my condolences to the family of Maj Gilbert I had the honor of working with him at Aviano and I also worked on 776 ,the aircraft he was flying, many times. It angers me that these Islamic Fascist SOBs are able to get away with this. I hope our friends on the ground hunt these guys down and give them all they deserve.

8 Have you all READ the two disgusting comments that appear above mine written by "Uncle Sam Rapist" and "No way out of here alive"?? You make me SICK. Troy Gilbert is a father of five young children. He was also doing his JOB. He saved Americans' lives that day. Don't ever come back on this site and disrespect him, call him names or post photos of his body, indicated that there was something to cheer about when he was killed. What if that was your son, husband or best friend? Perhaps you disagree with the war. That is fine. However, you need to draw the line at being gleeful when a man is killed. What kind of animal posts photographs of the dead and refers to them as assholes and baby-killers? Don't ever come back on this site.

9 "US Rapist" tracks to the Netherlands. His comments removed.

Posted by: Rusty at December 01, 2006 02:41 PM

10 Where did the news of four downed aircraft come from? I certainly missed it on the news.

Posted by: Greyrooster at December 01, 2006 02:56 PM

11 After reading the above comments by lefturds, I dare anyone to tell me that all lefturds shouldn't be burned alive.

Posted by: Improbulus Maximus at December 01, 2006 03:42 PM

12 That US rapist asshole is another one of those sick muslims living on the dole in Europe. Another reason I say outlaw islam. A gutter religion practiced by backward subhumans. Hope you read this goat humper.

Posted by: Greyrooster at December 01, 2006 10:54 PM

13 This is going to that asshole "No way outta here alive". First off F--K YOU!!! I knew Maj Gilbert when I was in Aviano along with Strawbridge who posted earlier. He was one of the nicest pilots and best pilots we had there. I can't believe you have the audacity to post crap like that. I think that you should be kicked out of this country if you live here. If you don't live here, I would like to personally track you down and put my foot right up your @$$. We all hope that Maj. Gilbert is still alive, and if not may he rest in peace.

Posted by: Brandon Wright at December 02, 2006 07:29 AM

14 Does anyone know if this is the Troy Gilbert that was raised in Spokane, Wa.??? Please send me a note. Thanks!

Posted by: DEBRA DIXON at December 02, 2006 01:06 PM

15 I have avoided coming to this post because I was being a wimp. I hate this kind of news, and I just wanted to skip it for a post where the bad guys are getting theirs.

I did not know Troy Gilbert. I don't need to have met him to know that it takes a special kind of person to go up in a big expensive fuel filled bomb, and take justice to the enemy. I cannot imagine myself doing that outside of a video game. It is really something.

Military aviation has been compared in manner, and valour to the knights of legend. The pilot patrols the skies, as the knight once patrolled the land. All evil doers beware.

This time the knight will not be riding back, and we will mourn the loss.

God bless Troy Gilbert, and may he rest in peace.

USA all the way!

16 To Maj. Troy Gilbert's Wife, his five

children, all his Family and Friends,

May God bless him for giving the ultimate

sacrifice and may God guide and bestow

loads of blessings and graces on all his

loved ones every day of their lives and may you

"walk on golden streets with him in the

New Jerusalem" when God calls them to

their eternal destiny.

17 I can't believe you would put "We pray that those who removed your sons body from the battlefield will find justice at the end of a Marine rifle." in this article. That is just as sick and perverted as anything these men could have ever done. Do you not know the old saying that you can't fight fire with fire. I sincerely hope you see the wrong in what you have written. I support our troops, and I support what they have to do. It is their job. But I NEVER hope that any man would ever have to kill another.

18 Troy was my second cousin, and although I never had the pleasure of meeting him, I know that his family was so proud of his accomplishments by listnening to his Uncle, whom works with me daily. Troy was a devoted father to his 5 children and a loving husband to his beautiful wife Ginger. This is so sad! He has 9 month old twins that will never know their father, but through memories of their older 3 siblings. This is to Ginger, Kaye, Ronnie, and the 5 kids----I pray that you all can get this behind you in knowing that Troy was one of the finest that our Nation had, and that he will be in Heaven looking down on you every minute. God Bless you all.

19 Rhonda, I am sorry that I left you out of my firs post. I know that you are so proud of what your brother stood for, and hope that God Blesses you with the strength to get through his. I have never met you, but heard so much about you from Don. My deepest sympathies are with you during this terrible time in your life.

Posted by: Kenny Martin at December 04, 2006 05:55 AM

20 Brandon: If you can track the SOB I've got some local boys here that would love to go with you.

Posted by: Greyrooster at December 04, 2006 08:02 AM

21 I am ever so sorry...
I want to send out my condolences to the family of Maj Gilbert and especially to Ginger.
Ginger and I used to work together while we were stationed at R.A.F. Lakenheath, England in 1997.
Boston Spencer, their first born son was born only a few months before my first born baby daughter. People move, especially when in the military and I had no idea that Ginger and Troy were now stationed in AZ and had 5 children.
The day the news has been released I came to my PC with my usual cup of coffee reading the news, just like many others would....
When Troy's picture appeared on the screen I have felt my eyes being filled with tears.
Even before reading his name I remembered clearly who he was.
Ginger and Troy were absolutely a wonderful couple and remarkable individuals.
We are well aware of how many honorable soldiers fall while serving our Country to protect our freedom and they are true heroes.
The way I remember Maj. Gilbert is with kindness for others and always with a huge smile on his face. Surely, Troy will be missed and I pray for Ginger and the 5 children.
I am an Air Force wife, my husband will deploy to Baghdad in March 07 for the whole year. I am sure that Maj. Gilbert will look down from heaven to all he loved the most...
his family and his country.
God Bless you Maj. Gilbert, I thank you for your sacrifice.
Never to be forgotten.
