John 15:13

CORONADO, Calif. - A Navy SEAL sacrificed his life to save his comrades by throwing himself on top of a grenade Iraqi insurgents tossed into a sniper hideout his unit had discovered, fellow members of the elite force said.

Full story.

2 This is the definition of what a hero is; he saved lifes....may God be with him.

3 I thought this only happened in films. Sad, that a man's true worth is only really discovered when he's gone. An awful loss to his family, and to the world.

4 friggin Ramadi is a nasty hell hole, that is one place that needs to burned to the ground, there are deserted places in that city cause the civilians (if you can call them that) know it is a schieze hole. True bravery and honor for this SEAL.

5 I cann't think of words more befitting than those spoken by the King of kings: "Greater Love had no man than this that he gave his life for his friend; and I am your friend!"
Amen to your prayer Sidney

6 The A-holes at Yahoo Newsand/or AP need to obscure the face of the SEAL on the right side of the image they posted ofPetty Officer 2nd Class Michael A. Monsoor.

God bless him. Where do we find such wonderful young men?

I'll make sure my little boy knows about Michael Monsoor and the many others like him. Those are the "superstars" I want my son to look up to.

Posted by: Derek at October 13, 2006 07:42 PM

7 Be careful where you go with that, Derek. What this man did was selfless and noble, no doubt about that. It was a spontaneous, impulsive act - one which speaks volumes about his character even to people who'd never met him. With the greatest of respect to this brave man, I'm not sure it's a great role model for an impressionable young mind; we don't need a generation of our own growing up believing that martyrdom is a good thing. We have enough of that lunacy on the other side. What this man did, he did on the spot, there and then, because it was right. He didn't plan for it years in advance.

8 God bless our military. What really frosts my ass is the lack of recognition they'll get from both the media and general public. Movies are made celebrating scum like Che Guevera (The Motorcycle Diaries) but it'll be a cold day in hell before this sailor's story ever makes the big screen. Phooey! We really have our priorities screwed up sometimes!

Posted by: Subvet at October 13, 2006 11:00 PM

9 And on that note Subvet, let me expand by saying his family will probably have a hell of a time dealing with the insurance company and the Veterans Administration who will try to find some way to wiggle out of their duties! God speed this hero nonetheless!

"I'm not sure it's a great role model for an impressionable young mind"

Sure Jim - T.O. is a much better role model...

11 Lost his grasp,

thanks for the reminder that no matter what the situation, it's the eeevil corprations that's the issue. Oh, and yeah, and I almost forgot-- godspeed to this hero.

in some loyal heart is your memory enshrined...

Garduneh Mehr, that's the title of the post. John 15:13.

19 Care to elaborate, old man?

Posted by: Jim Beam at October 15, 2006 12:57 PM

20 RIP man.

21 Just making a point, not want to deter from the heroism of this Navy seal.

Posted by: Last gasp Larry at October 16, 2006 12:26 AM

22 Comparing the death of a hero to something that may be bad for other young men?

Posted by: Greyrooster at October 16, 2006 07:25 AM

23 No, I would not want to discourage a hero from following suit ... then instead of one there would be several frustrated mothers haggling with insurance companies and the VA.

Posted by: Last gasp Larry at October 17, 2006 02:31 AM

24 True. Did you know that a United States soldier must contribute to his own insurance in case of his death? Otherwise his wife and kids get $20,000. They also must now pay into their VA benefits for college. Something wrong here.

Posted by: Greyrooster at October 17, 2006 02:59 PM

25 And that $20,000 figure had recently been upgraded from some sad figure like $6,000 as I recall. Barely enough to plant the poor comrad. Yep, something wrong with taxcuts to the rich. And IBM stock just soared after they moved to China and had a good earnings report.
