Poll: Americans Shift Dramatically Towards Pro-Life Label; Pro-Choice and Pro-Life Positions Now Tied with 47% of Country Backing Them

New poll finds a shifting of attitudes

According to a new poll from Marist, Americans' attitudes on abortion have dramatically shifted over the last month. Americans are now as likely to identify as pro-life (47 percent) as they are pro-choice (47 percent). A similar survey taken by Marist just last month found Americans were more likely to identify as pro-choice than as pro-life by a 17-point difference.

If you're wondering if this shift coincided with Democrats' open embrace of actual infanticide -- thus clarifying a debate that it would be better for the pro-choice side to keep unclarified -- it does seem the two are connected:

...

This surge in pro-life Americans comes after several states have passed or pushed for radical policies advocating for unlimited access to abortion, at any stage of gestation, for any reason or no reason at all. The survey was conducted Feb. 12-17, just weeks after New York passed the Reproductive Health Act, expanding access to post-viability, third-trimester abortions, and repealing protections for aborted children older than 20 weeks who are born alive. A proposed bill in Virginia would allow abortion up until the point of birth, and Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam endorsed giving doctors and mothers the power to decide whether an infant lives or dies after it is born. Last week, the Vermont House passed an even more extreme version of the New York RHA.

Democrats just voted against cloture on the Born Alive Protection Act, which would have required doctors have sought medical attention for a baby born in the course of an abortion, like you would with a, what do you call it, human being who was born alive, instead of, as Bill Kristol donor recipient Governor Ralph Northam would say, keeping it comfortable while a discussion about whether to kill it ensues.

The vote (which required 60 to end debate, because the Senate continues to play by Fake Filibuster rules) failed with 53 in favor, 44 against. Democrats Casey, Manchin, and Doug Jones of Alabama flipped to pretend to care about the issue. Three Senators -- Tim Scott of South Carolina, Kevin Cramer of North Dakota, and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska all chose to not be present for the vote.

Yes, I understand why people get upset about that - but I suspect this is driven by the fact that what I think encompasses "us" as a culture is very different than how some of you would define it.

In that light, polling like this and the reasons driving it are a good thing, because it means people are starting to think seriously about the issue. And it becomes a liability to the moonbats instead of the wedge issue for them to use on everyone else.

173 People tend to sponsor bills that have no chance of passing, much less making it into law. Conversely, if the bill looked like it could pass, oh gee, why would Doug Jones suddenly vote Democrat?

This was the easiest lay up in the world for Congressional Republicans to make. And yet Tim Scott still failed to make the grade. The President has done more to stop abortion in a year than the GOP has since the 70s.

There is simply no need for a Uniparty Congress.

I didn't say I liked the vote; I was saying that the YES votes (remember, YES here is pro-life and anti-abortion) would be lower if it the bill was trying to ban early term abortion. In that case, the YES votes would be fewer, perhaps much fewer.

What is REALLY horrifying is that the NO votes (anti-life and pro-abortion), on a baby just about born, are so high.

Or what Duke Lowell said:

165 The reason for the large shift in the last month is NY and VA. Early term abortion is one thing, late term and post term quite another. I think it made a lot of nominal pro choicers recoil.

177 Since RvW was decided, more than 60 million babies have been aborted, more than all the people that died in WWII. Let that sink in. From the moment of conception, that "clump of cells" will become a functioning human being. It will not be a giraffe, it will not be a dolphin, and it will not be a sea gull. It is a human being. Killing it is murder, there is no other word for it.
The same people who say that eating animals is murder are the same people who say that abortion up to and just after birth is totes good.

183 I never knew before the NY law, but Colorado is one of the "abortion is fine up to birth" states It makes me feel ill every time I think about it. There is even a clinic doing the infanticides in Boulder.

I'm thinking about becoming an unaffiliated voter and trying to get a ballot measure just for "no 3rd trimester abortions anymore" and playing it as a women's health issue. "It is not 1973 anymore, its very easy to learn if you are pregnant way before 24 weeks, and if mom develops a health issue they can give give the fetus some shots to speed development and just delivery it early." Its less safe for a woman to carry a fetus longer and then have a later abortion or to have an abortion rather than just inducing labor or doing a c-section if mom develops a health issue.

I don't even think an exception is needed for "fetus has some severe issue; with the testing available today issues should be able to be detected in the first 2 trimesters. The state is so lefty infested I don't know if the ballot issue would have a chance but I'd love to force the Dems to have to SAY why infanticide is OK, and when pre-mature babies have good chances of surviving if mom gets to 26 weeks, choosing to kill that infant in the womb IS infanticide. I'm not even fully pro-life - I'm just opposed to infanticide.

In the movie The Favorite (which disclaimer, I have not seen), the character Queen Anne has had over a dozen miscarriages, and is so emotionally scarred by them she keeps a bunny for each miscarriage. How you write that into the script and NOT see it comes across as a pro life stance? It screams pro life to me. Each of those children were precious losses.

Melissa McCarthy came out to introduce best costume in a giant gown dripping with bunnies and a bunny puppet. I thought it was hilarious...until I learned the symbolism of the bunnies in the film afterword. Ye gods.

248 my 2 cents..
I realize that for many of you, an abortion at any point after conception is considered murder.
For many conservatives, early abortions are a grey area.. I don't know that aborting a baby at 3 months is taking a life.. a potential life, yes.. but not being religious, it is not a given for me.
Ace usually avoids this discussion, and perhaps he has changed his opinion over the years. But I recall this is a subject where he disagrees with manyof you on that point.
Practically speaking.. abortion rights are the law of the land. They ain't going away, folks.
I would like to see the emphasis being on cutting the time period where abortions are legal. 20 weeks, maybe.
If a woman cannot decide before then that she wants an abortion, she has to keep it.
An all-or-nothing strategy is, to me, just as big a folly as the lefties wanting abortion right up to birth.. and now after!

Leftists, as usual, are full of $h!t. I am in favor of capital punishment and against abortion. To me, it is all about personal responsibility: the murderer must be held responsible for his actions and the fetus is in no way responsible for its conception.

Lefties like to pervert that concept because they are nasty f*kers that enjoy disgusting the normals.

About the only reason for not doing that is that it could get your ass thrown in jail.

252 Three Republican senators did not vote on the bill: Kevin Cramer (N.D.), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), and Tim Scott (S.C.).

According to their communications directors, both Cramer and Scott missed the vote due to flight delays.

253 I know there is a new thread but I want to share my thoughts. I am prolife from conception. Abortion is murder, just as infanticide is murder. That murder is legal in our country is a cause for great dismay because their blood cries out to God. May He have mercy on us.

We should ask for a complete end to abortion and I would encourage all who object to abortion at anytime to take that stand. We should not comprimise with our own people on this, especially when we know we will have to compromise with the Democrats. We should start with a no abortion at anytime stance and go from there.

How about 3 months and one day? Or 3 months and two days, etc. You tell me who gets to live or die based on a day.

255 Unfortunately, this is a push poll commissioned by pro-life group Knights of Columbus. Dem groups do this all the time with Public Policy Polling. Last election cycle, PPP would poll the same Senate race on it's own and, often, for a liberal health care group. There would be a 10 pt difference in the results. If Marist had found this result on it's own, it would be good news.

256 Yes, I can confirm that Cramer, at least, missed the vote because of a flight delay. He's rock solid prolife.

257 248---An all-or-nothing strategy is, to me, just as big a folly as the lefties wanting abortion right up to birth.. and now after!

Absolutely agree.

But cut the "potential life" crap. (Are you a parrot?)
It if weren't alive, you wouldn't have to kill it.

The individual human life begins at conception. Period.
Biology 101.
The question (for anyone but lefty parrots and imbeciles) is at what point that life should be regarded as a legal person.

No.
We START with no abortion after viability.
We START where we have 85% of the country with us.
