Should Mueller Recuse Himself Due to His Prior Dealings with Russian Oligarch Oleg Deripaska?

Mueller previously, how do I say this?, colluded with the Russian oligarch, who may now be a witness in his prosecution of Paul Manafort.

New concerns have been raised regarding a possible conflict of interest in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia collusion probe, involving a Russian oligarch, the FBI, and its failed attempt to get him to assist in the investigation.

Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska is a name that pops up from time to time in the collusion narrative, though it has been conspicuously absent from Mueller’s indictments. Now, a new report published at The Hill by investigative reporter John Solomon could help explain why: Deripaska has a history of working with Mueller's FBI.

According to Solomon's sources, the Bureau in 2009 asked the oligarch to spend millions of his own dollars to fund an FBI-supervised operation to rescue retired FBI agent Robert Levinson, who was captured in Iran while working for the CIA in 2007. The sources include more than a dozen participants inside and outside the FBI, the Levinson family, a retired agent who supervised the case, Deripaska's lawyer, and Deripaska himself.

Alan Derschowitz questions not only Mueller's conflict of interest, but asks the question: If Paul Manafort was indicted for colluding with Deripaska, why was Deripaska himself left out of the indictment? That seems like on-its-face evidence that Mueller's judgment is compromised when it comes to his old Russian gangster/oligarch pal.

Is the FBI now just the Best Friends Club with Guns?

176 If they're willing to alter 302s, who really believes the FBI wouldn't be willing to make up an interview entirely?

All they'd have to do is surveil the target long enough to identify a day they were at home for a few hours and date the 302 to that time.

Posted by: Teresa in Fort Worth, TX at May 15, 2018 02:37 PM (uDcBt)

It is, but I guess whatever operation they had in Iran at the time was compromised by Levinson's capture. What the FBI asked the Russian to do was to pay up to $25 million in baksheesh to the local Iranian higher ups in order to get Levinson released. The Russian was able to do this because he'd done a lot of business in Iran and had the contacts. It's unclear whether the scheme worked, but apparently he did pay out the $25M but was never compensated by the Feds. While $25 million is just pocket change to this guy, he was still a bit put out.

What was not mentioned here was that a couple of months before the election, three FBI agents came to the Russian's pad in NYC and started talking to him about "collusion" between the Russians and Trump. This guy laughed in their faces, saying the notion was ridiculous. The FBI agents told him to "keep an open mind" about it and left.

I think that's an excellent question and one that has been asked many times within the Trump administration. And not just the FBI but the FISC as well.

When they drop this Mother Of All Bombs on the populace how many people in jail are going to demand a retrial? What will happen to the FISC? What will happen to people's trust in any government institution which is pretty damn low right now anyway? Winning is great but what if the price is anarchy?

How do you fix any of this?

The only way a legal system works is if people just there will be justice.

Not necessarily that the truth will be found, or that the "right" conclusion will always be reached, but that the system is fair, impartial, and manned by people who keep it fair and impartial -- you know, justice being blind and all of that.

Right now, x% of the population already have no faith in the legal system. Once that number reaches critical mass, then what?

Are we back to punishment-by-mob? Or trial-by-tribal-elders? ...Or... what?

I don't think because they're doing something, and they've made it commonplace, that made it okay. It's just more of the same over-reach.
They can't even get investigations right here in the US, I doubt they're e doing a better job in Baduckistan (We checked that Omar Mateen guy, doesn't look to be a problem! "When asked if anything could have or should have been done differently

I'll just leave it at my original response. Comey was seen to have integrity when he was voted in. That changed, or people were unaware he was not a guy with integrity.

That said, I do believe people can have integrity, but then their life circumstances change and that changes with it.

Virtues are not static...like opinions. They change based on the choices we make. I've seen it happen too much. I don't say "that person never had integrity". I say "they used to, but things/they changed".

If you believe virtues are black and white, we have a fundamental difference of opinion. People evolve and change.

I've got news for you morons, this kind of social experimentation is exactly what leftist non-profit work IS. And they've got precisely the post-American-justice-system-society they need to test things out: it's called blue inner cities and illegal immigrant communities. Parallel justice systems, parallel banking systems, parallel education and childcare systems. That's their "great society", one the social-worker liberals get to drive home from to their taco bars and "luxury" condos and crop share drop boxes every day.

They're waaaaaaay ahead of us on this one.

322 By doing a thorough and complete investigation, laying bare the evidence and charging and trying the guilty no matter who they are. We can't have to systems of justice.

This won't necessarily make everyone a true believer but anything less and they will just confirm people's worst suspicions.
Posted by: JackStraw

Eh, I think the left is okay with that. They want our current system of govt to, at the very least, be pliable to change to what they want it to look like.

In a past job, I interacted with a lot of black youth, and I mean -- in that community at least, there is absolutely zero faith in the criminal justice system. To the point where people say they won't call the cops to report a burglary for fear of being shot or arrested when the cops show up.

Start stacking various disgruntled groups, and eventually you get to a critical mass where people are just... over it.

394 How in the fuck do you "seal" records at the Presidential Library ... when you're not keeping anything at the Presidential Library ?

Posted by: ScoggDog at May 15, 2018 03:38 PM (fiGNd)

Besides, Presidential libraries are just vanity objects. They shouldn't have the power to seal or do anything official.

This is the sort of asinine stuff that really pisses the hell out of me.

396 I have a breathalyzer. .24 is ...borderline doable.

Picture the drunk girl stumbling all over the place and puking on her shoes at a high school party and mumbling about how much she loves her ex boyfriend.

That's .24.

I've never seen my breathalyzer above .28, which was a really, really, drunk buddy of mine at a bachelor party who could barely even concentrate enough to breathe in to the machine.

.08 is legal limit in Texas.
So .24 is three times the legal limit.

Yes, .08 is the legal limit to drive in all 50 states (I think, some have talked about lowering it to .05.)

But .08 is... not very drunk. It's feeling good.

.12 or so is kinda buzzed, might be having a hard time walking in a straight line.

.20 is black out territory. Having trouble talking without heavy slurring.

Etc.

Maybe. W actually struck down a strengthening of the rule that Ronald Reagan added to presidential prerogative on documents. Obama restored it.

But that wasn't the point here, it was that Obama was doing something unique by classifying executive documents. He wasn't.

What Barky did was ridiculously abuse the power (which I don't believe was ever legal, in the first place). But Barky took it and perverted it to aid and abet his crimes and the crimes of his junta. Pretty much the same thing Barky did any of the laws he deigned to actually "follow", which weren't all that many, to start with.

Anything from there and beyond is alcohol poisoning and if you are a rookie you can die from it. If you aren't a rookie and you pass out on your back and throw up, you can die on your own vomit. In all seriousness if you drink to .20 and beyond more than once in a blue moon, you should get help. Drinking is like eating - if you are doing it to the point of throwing up, you are doing it WRONG.
