Well This Is Getting Interesting: Women With High Testosterone Levels Are Being Banned From Athletic Competition!

women runners NYT.jpg

This is where it is going to get nasty. Why can't a women with naturally high testosterone levels compete against other women? I see absolutely no rational explanation for a ban or a restriction.

What Qualifies a Woman to Compete as a Woman? An Ugly Fight Resumes I know it's a NYT link, and for that I apologize, but it's an interesting read.

They are going to contort themselves into an unmanageable tangle of rules that will try but fail to accommodate women with high "T," mutilated psychotics transgenders, XXX genotypes, and a whole host of other differences. If they restrict high "T," then why not give a time or distance advantage to women with low "T?" How about women who are midgets? They deserve to compete!

Popcorn here! Get yer hot fresh popcorn!

Because the IAAF hasn't proven its case to the pleasure of the CAS that testosterone improves a woman's (or person raised as a woman's) performance.

The entire history of steroids notwithstanding, I guess.

38 The only solution is to have unisex sports competitions.
Let women (with normal or abnormal T levels) run with Usain Bolt.

Now, in team sports you could still have problems. At least at the margins, there is a good degree of subjectivity about the quality of an athlete. (We've all heard stories about the occasional guy no one wanted for D-I football who later became an NFL star.)
Those margins would leave open the door for affirmative action for wymynz, I suppose.

But certainly in track & field, swimming, golf, tennis, etc. you can go unisex. After all, if you are going to put women on the front lines of combat where LIVES are at stake, why not in sports?

I just overheard a sportswriter using the term "freak" to describe male athletes:

I think that your magazine (it's still a magazine, right?) should consider whether it wants to support this kind of prejudicial language. Think about how it might make intersex athletes feel! Perhaps some sort of public statement is in order, or perhaps an educational period of unpaid leave for Mr. Feldman.

Just a thought!

Sure. But there is still a qualitative difference between men's sports and women's. Lower level men's sports (and boys') still hold more interest, as sports, than the top level women's sports. Men are more interesting to watch in sports competition.

Perhaps women prefer to watch women's sports ... but women aren't big sports watchers, so that's a serious problem that women's sports have, to begin with. They have no real audience. This is why women's sports often feel very contrived.

Totally agree but with a few exceptions. Women's pro tennis is fairly popular, and I don't watch tennis, but some folks say there's more back and forth, which makes is entertaining. Or at least they used to say that when I was a kid.

Then there's the Olympics. Women's gymnastics and figure skating have more viewers than the men's.
I was pretty excited to see the two Simones from Houston win the gold.
Plus there's the infamous beach volleyball ; I'm a straight chick, but I got into watching the women's beach volleyball for some reason. No one watches the men's beach volleyball.
BTW, I didn't think the female beach volleyball players were all that hot except for the Brazilians, but that's coming from someone who's not attracted to women in that way, so YMMV

Now as far as what I'll PAY to go see, the only sports I've ever bought tickets to were college football, Dallas Cowboys and San Antonio Spurs.

But all of the women I know who are sports fans watch men's sports exclusively unless there is some highly personal reason (family, usually) to watch women.

There are a lot of women, including the majority who are not sports fans at all, who do watch Olympic women's gymnastics and ice-skating. But, without taking anything away from the tremendous physical skill and training involved, those sports are more akin to dance than to athletics.

Not sure if anyone can understand that correctly. It's kinda all over the place. Initially, the word 'hysteria' or 'hysterical' was solely applied to women. Sigmund Freud worked with 'hysterical' women, for example. The root word 'hyster' in effect referring to the womb. Hysterectomy referring to removal of same.

So I read it with the historical nature of the word. So:

I'll wager that those same hysterics are the ones behind the testosterone hysteria.

Which makes perfectly good sense if read from that context. Or have I been out in the sun too long today?

It depends on their genes and what they're fed. For example, a carefully fed Wagyu in Texas is going to be a lot tastier than my West Texas family's generic Mexican steers who get the standard feedlot treatment.

I have a question about women's gymnastics (on the mat, not balance beam or uneven bars).

Several years ago, I turned to a channel showing a competition, and they interspersed their routine with little bits of dancing. And there was music playing - it looked like they were trying to make a low budget music video. WTF? When did that become a thing? What is the point? It's supposed to be a demonstration of athletic prowess, not music entertainment.

Vonnegut was eerily on target with that. Only things he did not forsee: there is an ugly undercurrent of racism, misandry and heterophobia that is absent from the Bergeron story. And the left uses that ugliness to try to add on fake rationalizations in order to sell the idea as "reasonable". They say any disparities are due to racism or sexism (even though the only racism and sexism operates in the reverse direction).

In the past at least, the free walkers were nearly always women or the occasional midget.

In any case, wire walkers don't do flips and somersaults, etc.

The point is not that there are no men who can do balancing acts. It's simply that women are physically favored in this by having a lower center of gravity.

422 One of the Hangover movies had a hilarious scene about Thai trannies. "Dat's why it called Bangkok, not Bangcunt".

428 Have them compete naked.
Those with dicks or hairy chests get eliminated.
Those with unshaven armpits get eliminated.
The rest get oiled up and sent to my tent.

432 In sports that involve the use of some intermediary instrument (equestrian, archery, shooting), men and women can compete on a more or less even basis. In sports requiring strength or speed, women are at a disadvantage

---

Is this true? I'd be pretty surprised if the abilities weren't noticeably different even when there are instruments involved. Bowling, pool, etc. still has substantial gaps don't they?

I agree, it's a blurred line, but babies born with androgen resistance are born with female genitalia and develop as female. Look at it this way. The 'default' is to be born female; you have to 1) have testosterone and 2) have androgen receptors that work to form male genitalia. An example would be Turner syndrome, where you are born with one female chromosome, in other words, XO and not XX. You don't have to have two X chromosomes to be female. (Not a perfect example, but best I can think of on short notice.)

Beyond that. Testosterone affects brain development - thinking like a male, if you will - musculoskeletal development, a lot of stuff. You can shoot these patients up with all the testosterone you want and it will have no effect. Patient will stay 'female'. And in addition, prior to amniocentesis and genetic testing these cases were not diagnosed until the patient hit puberty. (Think "Mom, why am I not getting my period?") Imagine being told for the first time at age 15 or 16 that you are genetically male when all this time you have considered yourself female.

437 I know this thread is just about dead, but I do like to watch the women professional bowlers because their game, most of them, is more like mine. I could never compete with the men pro's because of rev rate and speed. One of my favorite new young bowlers is 21 mph and a 450 rev rate off his hand. Mine is 16 mph and 220 rev rate. A good many of the women bowlers games are more similar to mine. They have to rely more on accuracy and being able to repeat shots than pure raw power. Even then, they would most likely spank me like a red headed step child because they are more accurate and I'm a 200+ average bowler.

439 there is a very simple fix to this problem. do a genetics test. If it comes back as a male guess what. you don't get to compete against women.
