Overnight Open Thread (19 May 2017)

More than 7 million voter registrations are duplicated in multiple states.

Hypocrisy

I'll never take the left seriously when it comes to handling classified materials or national security. The left's ridiculous double standard on spilling secrets.

OPSEC

Either always act like there is a microphone present or take proper security measures if you're going to say something you don't want to make public. House leaders worry more meetings secretly recorded.

Splodey Video

Math

Social-justice comes to math. 'Math has been used as a dehumanizing tool'.

Blade Runner

I am interested in seeing the new Blade Runner movie, but I'm really interested in seeing how the score is as the original score by Vangelis was so good for the first movie. Why Blade Runner has such a great score.

Big Country

Released on this day way back in 1983.

Superbug

I do try to avoid going to health clinics unless I absolutely have to. A dangerous 'superbug' fungus is spreading through US health care facilities.

In other news, the CDC wants to remind you how gross public pools are.

58 percent of public pools tested positive for fecal bacteria. (A recent Canadian study suggested that large public pools contain an average of about 75 liters of urine, too.)

UCLA

What a mess. Go for it UCLA. Black students at UCLA make ultimatum demanding $40 million, free housing and 'safe spaces'. So what happens if their demands aren't met? They quit school? Go on strike? What? Ironically, they have to make demands like this in one of the bluest states in the nation.

Hollywood

A 99% liberal run billion dollar industry seems to not want to work in the US. Hollywood's big summer movies were all filmed elsewhere. So the group who thinks the rich don't pay their fair share, flee to countries where they are willing to fleece taxpayers to pay for billionaire entertainment projects.

Questionable Fashion

Oh dear God, just no. Uniquely designed jeans that easily convert into high cut shorts either in front or on the side.

Dog Video

Tonight's ONT brought to you by dogs afraid of ridiculous things:

14 Trans-Elves

Slowly creeping up on society has been the identity of "trans". First, and most prominently, has been "transgender". Taken to increasingly actual lengths has been the concept of being "trans-species" including surgery, marriage, and other elements of insanity. Now, not only can one be a different species, but a fantasy one as well.

17 I'd be willing to bet that my voter registration is duplicated. Earlier this year I changed residency from Michigan to Florida as well as the titles plates to two of my vehicles. I just got the tag renewal paperwork in the mail for the vehicles. I have no intention of voting in Michigan again so I'm not too worried about voter fraud.

"I suspect a large part of it is due to idiot parents taking their infants and non-toilet-trained toddlers into the pool wearing regular diapers."

I'd guess that's a small part of it, and that most of the problem is kids through adults practicing perhaps less rigorous personal hygiene than we might wish. I don't think I want to follow that train of thought any further.

When you've lost Vox... where else is there to go?

The phrase I keep coming back to is "jumped the shark." Day after day of vague 'Collusion!' smears, each one more absurd and trivial than the last - where exactly can that take you? Well today, against my better judgement, I clicked on a Vox story and read the whole thing. In a nutshell, there are some capitalizing on Russiaphobia by pumping out alarmist hourly updates, all of them made up out of thin air - for clicks, traffic and profit. Vox investigates (ikr?) the circle-jerk collusion echo chamber that has been created which bubbles up to the larger mainstream press. All it often takes is a vague tweet by a senator referencing the absurd charge and bammo, it's in the National Laughingstock as an 'article.' Gotta hand it to Vox, even they know it has gone way, way too far and will most likely backfire in the public sphere long term. This dovetails nicely with the story today about Dems urging caution re: impeachment any second now - it's all over!

Democrats are falling for fake news about Russia

I have started to hate that group. Their training program is basically a summer workshop and a lot of cheerleading about serving at-risk populations. Some of their teachers are no better than subs. They take on a job for a year or two and then use this "community service" to land a job in an "education" nonprofit or advocacy group, like the groups that write guidelines for letting trans kids in the locker rooms.

Or have the super-cool sales dude, with bell bottom jeans and white guy afro, put Foreplay/Long time on a turntable and crank it up just to show you how little distortion the speakers have. And nobody else in the store looking concerned about it, just rockin out.
And you, not paying attention to that at all, because you just noticed his hair is moving with the air displaced by the bass!

--

I think the process goes like this:

1. Make something up. Anything. Really.
2. Send out email/tweet to MSM
3. Sit back and watch

Personally, I think we should start playing their game. Anonymous accuse gay Democrat congressmen of being woman haters. Then accuse women congressmen of hating blacks. Then accuse straight male Democrat congressmen of being homophobic.

Be specific in the accusations. Like this:

1. Find a lower profile event from a decade or so ago that several Democrat attended.
2. Name Democrat.
3. Create imaginary crime.

Example:

In 1995, Chuck Schumer attended a party for Margery Tabankin where he was overheard saying that he felt uncomfortable being around flamboyant gay men and hoped they would stay in the closet.

IMHO, along with the MSM and Twitter, it would be good to troll places like Democratic Underground, etc. with this info.

So the new Vulcan is dark skinned, female, and apparently is part human. *sigh*

Crew uniforms are heavily based on those from Enterprise.

The set designer must be obsessed with Erector sets because of all the beams, even the bridge is cluttered with obstructing beams. And the lighting is dark, which would make it harder for the Captain to see what is happening on the bridge if she could see past the support beams.

Posted by: garrett at May 19, 2017 10:29 PM (/0dcw)

the tonearm is exactly that length because it hits the record at exactly the middle of the record.
The theory was that regular tone arms were getting "dragged" by the grooves in the record, and that drag would wear out the record and degrade the sound quicker.

The whole point of the linear was for it to sit precisely in the groove and an angle that most reduced the dragging effect.

I have a Luxman turntable, TEAC tape deck, JVC CD player, Onkyo tuner and receiver, and Infiniti speakers.

When I moved into my dad's house, I stored the speakers on the ground floor, and one of them was ruined when water got in after a heavy rainstorm.

I've lived here 15 years now and I've still never hooked up the stereo. For one thing, I'd have to rearrange the living room and I like it the way it is. For another thing, I just don't listen to music as much as I used to. I bought a set of speakers for my desktop computer which can play CDs, and that's good enough for my needs.

Oh, I know of the benefits and drawbacks of the linear tracking. But, they could have moved the tracking portion back and utilized a longer arm and achieved better tone (through increased mass alone).

Still, I have always liked linear tracking tables for any system that someone besides myself will touch.

Safer for my LPs.

They do. Digital recordings clip the extreme highs and lows.

While CDs are more convenient, when at home I still love to listen to the old albums rather than CDs. Also, many bands are now rediscovering the LP and the market is growing larger. I don't think records will ever be what they once were but it's nice to see they haven't completely died out.

283 Every one of us, with few exceptions, could have committed voter fraud, so the fallacy that there couldn't possibly be such a thing is patently ridiculous! My son's ballot was mailed to my house for about eight years after he had moved out. I could easily have filled it out my way. My dad was nearing the end of his life at the last election (he died two days later) and my mom could have filled his out, but she didn't. These are two examples in one law-abiding family. Just imagine all the nefarious things that can be done.

There was a story I remember. It was some engineering report, and a guy became suspicious that no one was reading his detailed reports on something. So he changed all the units to this archaic units, at that included furlongs per fortnight for velocity and furlongs per fortnight^2 for acceleration.

I'm trying to remember some others. Anyway, no one said a thing, which confirmed that no one was reading the reports.

Posted by: Muldoon at May 19, 2017 11:41 PM (wPiJc)

It was a remarkable achievement, and I was a little obsessed about it for a while. Parts of the Dakotas and Montana and Idaho are still the same. The vast herds of buffalo and elk and bear and the rest of it must have been unreal. Today we think of bear and deer and elk as high mountain animals, but that's not really the case. They have been driven there. I have DeVoto's edit of the Journals. "Undaunted Courage" is good, and I have the Thwaites 3 volume set, and a big coffee table book about it by somebody. Beautifully illustrated. There are very few actual artifacts left that can be positively attributed to the expedition. The Yellowstone Valley and similar must have been really something to see.

Way late to the discussion, but I had the great good fortune to grow up in the Yellowstone region, and I have always been profoundly interested in the Corps of Discovery, and John Colter, in particular. I spent the latter half of my youth in Cody, Wyoming, and Colter was prominent in our local history. When he traipsed through, there were active geysers and hot springs. Colter's Hell is not Yellowstone, it's at the feet of Spirit (Cedar) Mountain and Rattlesnake Mountain, between which runs the Shoshone river.

Jeeze. I got windy here. Sorry.

Good night. road trip to Phoenix tomorrow. Yay.

548 OK, so on nipple hair:

When I was in college I "dated" a super-lefty wymonz studies girl. It was great in that as a super feminist she was supposed to engage in sexual depravity to prove her bone fides (heh).

Anyhoo, she had nipple hair that she didn't pluck but shaved. And not often enough.

But I'm about as manly as Niles Crane, so getting laid for me was a bonanza. Whatever that certain "IT" some men have, I have the antidote.

Yeah, she was gross.

Sorry to share that with you all.

Another one on this Perry Mason episode they're running. His client is this fright of an aging actress, a Norma Desmond type.

She was played by this actress Estelle Winwood, who lived to be 101, born in 1883 and died in 1984. She was thus in her 80s in 1966 when that episode was made.

She made her Broadway debut in 1916.

That makeup job was a hoot.
