Walking Through History - [Weirddave]

Today I got to do something extraordinary: Today I walked in the footsteps of the first Europeans to set foot on North America. Today I visited L'Anse Aux Meadow.

Lanse1.JPG

L'Anse Aux Meadow is the site where Leif Erikson* established an outpost in the new world over 1000 years ago. It is on the very northern tip of Newfoundland, Canada's easternmost province (which presents its own problems, see Getting There). Erikson sailed from Greenland about the year 1000, skirted Baffin Island, came south along the beaches of Labrador and put ashore at L'Anse Aux Meadow to establish a camp. L'Anse Aux Meadow is situated in an easily located cove between the vast timber strands of Labrador and the resource rich maritime provinces (Vinland). The land is bog, which had the twin advantages of being an ideal building material for halls and huts, and providing bog ore which the Norsemen smelted into crude iron. Somewhere between 60-90 Norsemen and women lived and worked here for about a decade before abandoning the outpost.

lanse2.JPG

In 1960, Norwegian explorer Helge Ingstad, following clues from historic Viking sagas, arrived in Medee's Cove. The locals directed him to "Indian mounds" where their children played. Ingstad's excavation, and one that followed sponsored by the government of Canada, conclusively proved that Vikings had established a settlement in North America 500 years before Columbus sailed the ocean blue. In 1975 L'Anse Aux Meadow was designated a national historic site, and in 1978 UNESCO declared that it was a world heritage site.

Today, there are several things to do at L'Anse Aux Meadow. There is a visitor center with a small museum and gift shop. Norstead, a reconstruction of a generic Norse settlement is nearby. Right next to the mounds in the meadow they have reconstructed several of the buildings exactly as they would have appeared 1000 years ago.

lanse4.JPG

And then there is the actual site itself. Unlike any similar site I have been to, L'Anse Aux Meadow is completely open and accessible. When you go to Jamestown, for example, you don't see Jamestown, you see a reconstruction. Jamestown was on an island. You can't go there. Here, you're walking exactly where the Norsemen walked, you're looking at exactly the coast they looked at. Maybe it because of my love of history, but I definitely got a thrill up my spine and a tear of awe in my eye. Was this a bucket list kind of trip? I was in Newfoundland for a wedding, so yes. There was no way I was going to get to The Rock and NOT see L'Anse Aux Meadow. Sinking my fingers into the same muskeg that Leif Erikson trod was amazing. My wife is of Icelandic descent and has traced her direct lineage back to Erik the Red, so for her these aren't "ancestors" they're ANCESTORS. It's definitely worth doing, but getting there, aye, there's the rub.

lanse3.JPG

Vikings stood exactly here and saw exactly this (minus the modern bridge and plaque) 1000 years ago!

Getting There

You can fly into Gander, but it's expensive AF and you'll have to make a jillion connections and live in airports for 2 days. Driving from the US means taking I-95 as far as it goes, then transiting New Brunswick and Nova Scotia to North Sydney. There you get on a ferry for an 8 hour trip to Port Aux Basque. Do it overnight and splurge for a cabin (trust me on this). Even then, you can't get into Port Aux Basque if it's too windy (a not uncommon occurrence in the North Atlantic). Our ferry sailed in a circle off Port Aux Basque for 12 hours until it was calm enough to go in, costing us a whole day (you don't drive at night in Newfoundland because the island is infested with moose and you'll hit one). There is no WiFi on the ferry.

From Port Aux Basque it's 699 kilometers to L'Anse Aux Meadow, 699 kilometers of 2 lane highway with lots of potholes. If you love scrub pine and birch, you'll be in heaven. It's very pretty, and Gros Morne National Park, which you'll go through about halfway, is gorgeous. The drive is miserable when it's raining, and it's always raining in Newfoundland. As a bonus it was 2 degrees C today. After you've seen L'Anse Aux Meadow ( a day at most ) you have to do it all over again going the other way. The local hootch is a rum called Screech that aspires to be Val-U-Rite. On the plus side, the locals are friendly, if occasionally unintelligible, and I ate 6 lobsters in four days, so yum.

If you find yourself in Newfoundland, you must go to L'Anse Aux Meadow. If you're thinking of going, my advice would be to take an RV and make it a leisurely trip across the Maritimes. Take 2 weeks off and really enjoy yourself.

*Funny story about Leif. When he returned from L'Anse Aux Meadow to Greenland, he found that he had been removed from the village rolls and could no longer vote. When he complained, they checked their records and told him "We're sorry, we must have taken Leif off our census."

21 I have often wondered how different things would have been had they stayed to any degree. Imagine the Indians slowly exposed to European diseases and developing the resistance and having an Iron Age culture by the time the Spaniards arrived.

I'm thinking the Aztecs would have called a Thing to discuss what to do about Cortez.

Anybody ever read The Greenlanders by Jane Smiley? Fascinating but ultimately depressing story of the doomed colonies on Greenland, settled in a warming period and shut off from the home country when the mini ice age hit.

Speaking of Injuns. When are they going to thank the white man for saving their asses from going the same way as the Neanderthals? They had reached the end of their evolutionary potential. Other human genetic lines had continued to evolve. They stopped at hunter/gatherer/nomad. Just an opinion..others may feel differently.

In Louis L'Amour's Last Of The Breed, a USAF pilot Joe Mack (who happens to be Sioux) is captured when his experimental plane is forced down, taken to Siberia and interrogated by the KGB. The KGB man immediately plays the "White Man Took Injun Land" card. Which Mack throws back into his face, basically saying that the white man didn't steal anything that we didn't steal beforehand. Plus, it's still his country, Injuns are just as much a part of the USA as the white man etc.

Always loved that part......along with the ending "This was once a custom of my people...."

114 The Viking colonies in Greenland fared better. The last written record was from 1408, and the colony may have struggled on into the mid-1400s.

In 1492 there were probably people in Europe still alive who had been born prior to the Greenland colony dying out.

Oh, and the colony probably died out because the climate got colder and more inhospitable. I'm sure they wouldn't have minded some global warming.

It has neither the same degree of difficulty to get ther nor the same historic context, but Mrs. Krebs wants to get out to the tip of Keweenaw Point in Upper Michigan sometime. Now all we need to do is find some place that rents 4WD high riding vehicles and we're off.

120 Cool article, but you can absolutely go to the actual Jamestown site. Conventional wisdom said that it had been reclaimed by the James River, but in the 90s they discovered that most of where the fort stood was still, in fact, above water. Went there a couple years ago with my kids and watched as they excavated a storage hut. They had excavated the chapel a few months earlier and proudly pointed me to the spot where Pocahontas and John Rolfe were married. Very cool stuff.

Delayed Shipping Notice

As all of you probably know, the renewed fervor over gun control and the threat of political action created by the horrific event in Orlando Fl. over this past weekend, have created a dramatic surge in gun sales.

Due to the overwhelming number of orders received over the last few days, our shipping department is now running about 5 days behind and that delay may even increase as the orders continue to pour in. Please know that we are working overtime and weekends to do everything in our power to expedite these orders.

"In my life I will take two. This was the first".

Great book, great ending. Always sad he died before the sequel to The Walking Drum. Strange, he's an American western writer, and I think his non westerns are his best books (not that the westerns are bad, they aren't. It is. It's not like the death of the Roman Empire is any great historical secret. Recruiting foreigners into the military didn't work out so well for them.

This is yet more evidence that the Federal government is actively hostile to the American people.

306 Tillikum - I think it was you - a few days ago during an impromptu gun thread that had broken out (imagine that) you asked about the Springfield XD's durability/reliability.

MWNP chimed in that he had quite a collection of XD/XDM/XDSs and that they had never had any trouble.

I've just had the one 9mm XD, but for several years. It's been 100% reliable. The company advises replacing the recoil spring after 3,000 rounds. I ignored that and suffered no consequences (occasional failures-to-feed have almost certainly been from under-charges in my reloads). Just recently I finally replaced the spring. But I'm guessing it was more like the 7,000-round mark.

Before I bought it years ago, there had been an interesting torture test run by someone. I think it was up to 50,000 rounds, with the predictable adventures - water, mud, freezing, not cleaned, etc. As I recall the XD fared very well in the test.

Just FYI. It's a great platform, has the nice 1911 grip angle, is extremely easy to field strip/clean, and comes in many flavors (all of which you, as a resident of a free state, may taste).

Dang. When I was doing my paperwork, a young guy was picking up his M-1 from CMP (he ordered just before the recent hiatus in sales by CMP). Nice Springfield, with beautiful/character-rich but fine GI wood. Was good to see a young'in getting one. He was pretty excited, I was able to advise him on some sites that provide excellent tutorials on M-1 inspection/cleaning/care.

it's a lot of gun for the money; classic 1911 design; 8+1; well made

drawback: the parkerized finish does not play nice with the little copper rivet on the pocket of your jeans (operator error )

sure, it's not a khimber or wilson combat, or any of the other big name brands. The purist would see it as "rough"; but it's a solid 1911 for under $500

321 When was the last time you went to Jamestown? Yes, the reconstruction is in a slightly offset area (though not all of it), but you can most certainly tour the actual archaeological digs. The church built over the site of the very first one still stands, and you can go inside and see the foundations of the original through plexiglass over the ditches.
You can most certainly walk exactly where those first English settlers trod.
