Quote of the Day I #ShirtStorm

"Yes, that's right. After years of effort, the European Space Agency's lander Philae landed on a comet 300 million miles away. At first, people were excited. Then some women noticed that one of the space scientists, Matt Taylor, was wearing a shirt, made for him by a female "close pal," featuring comic-book depictions of semi-naked women. And suddenly, the triumph of the comet landing was drowned out by shouts of feminist outrage about ... what people were wearing. It was one small shirt for a man, one giant leap backward for womankind."

-- Glenn Reynolds

Quote of the Day II

If I land a space ship going millions of miles an hour on a rock going millions of miles an hour, y'all are lucky if I wear pants.

Behold the Shirt of Shame

Filled to its 100% cotton brim with misogyny and available in sizes X-Small to 7XL of hate.

Granted it wouldn't have been my first sartorial choice for a comet landing presser mainly for style reasons. But then if you're a successful comet-landing rocket scientist, one of the perks ought to be that you get to celebrate in whatever damn shirt you feel like.

Comet Guy and the Social-Justice Black Hole

No one seriously thinks Taylor is a misogynist or meant to offend anyone with his shirt.  In fact, it was designed by a woman named Elly Prizeman, who was properly mortified by the reaction.  "My heart just broke watching Matt's apology," she wrote on Facebook.  "That is not cool.  The public can be unreasonably cruel.  I'm saddened and angered by this."  A personal friend of Taylor's, she has described him as "an amazing, kind, loving and sensitive person."

Of course, the very point of the mob action is that no conscious offense by Taylor was required for him to be boiled in online oil.  Thoughtcrime does not always proceed from deliberate action; intention is divined by the accusers.  The goal is to create an atmosphere of terror, in which everyone is double extra careful to pre-censor their words and deeds, and by extension their thoughts, for fear of career destruction.

...That's because acceptable behavior is now defined not by universal norms, but by elastic, politicized equations that take identity into account.  There are things Person A can do with impunity, but Person B would be destroyed for, based entirely on their sexes, or the color of their skins.

The 'Drunk Girl' Video Appears to be a Hoax

At least part of it was staged and some guys appearing in it were told that they were part of a hidden camera sketch and to hit on the girl.

Shockingly, of the five men featured, only one actually offers her assistance, while the rest attempt to lure her back to their homes - despite her obviously drunken state.

Two sources told The Smoking Gun that men in the video were approached on the street and asked to participate in a 'comedic, hidden camera' video.

One man who decided not to appear in the video, says he was told it was a 'student video' and that it appeared they had no releases or paperwork to sign.

Mike Koshak is one of the men who agreed to participate in the video and is filmed in a blue tank top, telling the tipsy woman: 'You're in no shape to be walking around like this' before leading her in the direction of his home where there is 'more beer'.

Under Fire from Western Leaders Putin Leaves G-20 Summit Early

Libyans Behaving Badly In Britain

Libya's finest were apparently a bit unclear on the absolutely no-drunken-raping thing.

In early November Britain sent 300 Libyan officer trainees home before their 24 week training was completed. Five of the Libyans did not leave as they are being held on rape charges. Three of these Libyans are charged with raping women and two of raping a man. The Libyans had arrived in June and within a month locals were complaining of Libyans coming into the nearby village and behaving badly. This was not supposed to happen as the Libyans were selected to receive combat and leadership training so they could better train and command troops back in Libya. British authorities were surprised by the bad behavior and responded by ordering the Libyans were restricted to the 80 hectare (200 acre) base where they lived and trained. In August this led to a mutiny among the Libyans.

...The British tried to cope with all this by stationing hundreds of armed soldiers in the village (population 3,500) and on the base to prevent the Libyans from getting out of hand. This did not work either. Some of the Libyans tried to apply for political asylum. This was denied after the rape incidents in late October and the decision was made to send all the Libyans home.

The Pot Gender Gap

A fascinating new national poll from Quinnipiac University shows that men and women disagree markedly on the question of marijuana legalization.  While men surveyed strongly favor legalization by a margin of 59 to 36 percent, women oppose it by a clear majority of 52-44 percent.  This 15-point gender gap in support for marijuana legalization -let's call it the "pot gender gap" - is not quite as large as the 20-point gender gap in support for President Obama in the 2012 presidential election, but it is striking.  What's most interesting, though, is how it confounds the expectations set by the voting gender gap.  In voting, women trend more liberal and Democratic, while men trend more conservative and Republican.  Yet with the pot gender gap, we see women taking the more conservative, law-and-order approach.

Colt Teetering on the Brink of Bankruptcy

Colt has been on the decline for quite some time. The key to Colt's success has been their government contracts - Colt was the sole manufacturer of the M4 carbine and M16 rifle for decades. But in 2013, FNM won the contract for the M4 and the M16 rifle, and the military is showing no signs of going back. With its main cash cow gone, all that's left for the manufacturing giant is the commercial market (which they had more or less ignored for years). Now, unable to compete in the modern firearms market, Colt may soon be just another corporate casualty.

47 The financial details emerged Wednesday, when the D.C. Council's judiciary committee unanimously voted to forward a bill that would overhaul asset forfeiture laws in the nation's capital. The bill would raise the threshold of proof required for a forfeiture, bolster the rights of individuals whose property has been taken and require that proceeds from seizures under federal law go into the city general fund, rather than directly to the police department. The full council is set to vote on the bill Tuesday.

Council member Tommy Wells, chairman of the Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety, said police should not have a financial incentive to make seizures. He said the bill addresses problems that are common across the country.

"All across the nation, law enforcement agencies are directly benefiting from forfeiture," said Wells (D-Ward 6), who is leading the effort to reform asset forfeiture in the District. "In those places, forfeiture proceeds go directly to the law enforcement entity, creating at best the appearance of a conflict of interest, and at worst, an unchecked incentive for slush funds."

... at first glance, this sounds all well and good, but frankly, it smells like the DC Council just wanted a cut of the money

Since I currently live in north Louisiana, the person who "doesn't believe in science" the most (according to the foolish progs) is Gov Jindal. What he did to warrant such slander, especially given his impressive resume, I have no idea.

But curiously, they said nothing about this "shirt-gate" with Matt Taylor. Either they didn't know or they are so blinded by their ideology that stupid fem-progs aren't given the "doesn't believe in science" slander. 134 Regarding the gun girls shirt. You know kbdabear provides many "morale-boosting" photos of scantily-clad young ladies posed with firearms. What if we were to select a few of those, and have a pinup artist render them as drawings, with faces and attire altered enough that there would be no chance of copyright infringement, and then have some of those drawings incorporated into a print fabric suitable for Hawaiian shirts? Kind of like Cafe Press, if you will. Get a Horde-specific "gals with guns" shirt out there. Maybe some very subtle AOS hints in the print, like stompy boots, or a raptor or two, or an Ace of Spades playing card incorporated into the art as part of one of the ladies' costume?

Target and allies strike back, SJW's immediately scream to their cult and friends in the MSM about how they're getting doxxed, death threats, vile comments, etc. The attacker immediately goes into VICTIM! mode in an attempt to deflect the counterattack.

This no doubt is being set up with the campaign for HILLARY! in order to frighten anyone from criticizing her majesty or countering any smears coming from her.

Pot makes one lose ambition. Sure, a little bit won't turn a professional into a basement dwelling loser but it will in the aggregate reduce the amount of career success that its user experience. And *obviously* legalization will get more people to use it.

232 Question for the horde:

Can it be possible for someone to be unwittingly or subconsciously a passive-aggressive sadistic jerk?

Because I'm trying my best to find some room for forgiveness here.

I have friends staying with me and my family -- a female friend from long ago, and her newish husband.

Proviso: both are extremely left-wing. They think I am left-wing too. Just so you have the background.

Anyway, the husband has "something wrong" with him socially. He is very infantile and juvenile, in the sense that he always expects (and usually gets) things to be his way. Often, an irrational or grating way. He's also one of those people who overstays his welcome. He also lectures and hectors people he doesn't really know on out-of-bounds topics.

But most oddly, he does weird passive-aggressive sadistic torments on people in public social settings.

Example:

We all went to a restaurant. I was unfortunately crammed in the corner table and could not get out without him getting up from his chair to let me out.

After the meal was over, and everyone else was done, and some were even getting ready to leave and starting to stand up, this husband guy simply took forever to keep nibbling the last little crumbs on his plate, to the point where he was the last one sitting -- him and of course me, crammed in next to him with no way to escape.

And then even after he finished the last crumb, he then took like two minutes draining the last drops from his glass, slowly, slowly.

Then when there was absolutely nothing left to consume, and literally everyone else was standing by the door ready to leave, he took out a pen and started writing people's initials on the doggy bags. Then he started drawing little cartoon faces on the doggy bags. At this point I kind of blacked out from suppressed rage, pinioned behind him, alone, unable to move.

Then he started re-reading the menu, and commenting on the items.

And then, finally, after interminable minutes, he got up and made a grandiose gesture of "kindly" pulling the chair back for me to get out, and acted like he and all the others had been waiting for me. Then he walked quickly over to the departing group so that I was left alone, visually identifiable as the one straggler.

OK, I thought, he's just mentally ill. Really, he doesn't mean to pull these sadistic mind games -- he can't help it, because he's crazy.

I say this to myself because his wife is like just about my best friend. And I don't want to go into a rage spiral about her husband, who she has no intention of ever leaving.

And the more I observe him, the more I'm able to convince myself that he isn't even aware of what he's doing or why, because he never displays overt malice, and isn't even aware of just how socially screwed up he is. He thinks he's a jolly normal guy that everyone likes -- when, in fact, his wife confided to me that actually most everyone avoids him, and the few people he considers his friends are just tolerating him, or are themselves crazy.

Obviously I can't give full-fledged psychoanalysis of the guy in just a comment, but based on what you see here: Is he doing this crap on purpose, or does he just have thought disorders over which he has no control or awareness, like someone with a form of social Tourette's Syndrome?

Yeah, but you don't see men blubbering about being butthurt over it.
It has become a common theme in tv shows and commercials for dad to be the dumbest member of the family. Men don't start a campaign to get the shows or commercials taken off the air.

We laugh heartily at comedy shows where a man gets whacked in the balls, like half the videos on America's Funniest Home Videos. Again, men aren't whining about triggers and microaggressions or other meaningless shit that some gender studies jackass cooked up.

These women who are bitching about the shirt need to be told to take a Midol and shut up.

You need to learn The Lesson about Seating:

NEVER let yourself get blocked-in.

267 To be late to the party, let me stagger in and say:

(1) Please attend a boater safety course from the USCG Auxiliary or the US Power Squadron. It is worth the money. I like my patrols to be a boat ride, not to rush off and try to find someone to pull from the water.

I Am suddenly serious - please attend one of these classes and purchase the life saving gear the Coast Guard recommends. Spending two hours in the water when everything has gone wrong is the opposite of fun. If your boat has a floating EPIRB then that means those guys that will run out into a hurricane are on their way; and the old USLSS saying was 'you got to go out; you don't got to come back' is downplayed, but the Coast Guard still tries to do that - please don't make them do that.

(2) Rocket Scientist shirt. Please. A tacky Hawaiian shirt gives you the jimm-jamms? It gives you the vapors? It makes you feel dissed as you are a woman? I may regret offering this idea, but please - feminists - please make yourself closed communities where you can study texts on feminism and feel safe to do so. Have closed locks to receive supplies through and within you walls feel safe from all men; where you can celebrate with one another your liberation. Call the first place "New Harmony" and work from that.

No, I offer the idea freely; you can do or do not with it as you choose. Far be it for me as a mere man to tell you something - I just put it into the air to be captured by whomever wants to do so.

271 Arbalest: exactly.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Mom. I really do. But she can be so controlling sometimes that it makes me crazy, plus she still treats me like a misbehaving five-year old on top of it.

There are certain places I *will not* go with her, because if I do, she will revert to these behaviors. Exhibit A is the church our family grew up in. I and my Mom always end up going with my sister in bro-in-law.

But am I *ever* allowed to sit with my sister and BIL, who are so much closer to my age? No, of course not. My Mom will *always* insist I enter the pew *first,* then enter right behind me, and then my sis and BIL will enter.

And it was this way my entire childhood. I was *always* expected to stay with the adults, because I had emotional issues related to my OCD and other things too complicated to get into here. To say nothing of the fact that my mom had absolute zero tolerance for anything she found even mildly embarrassing (i.e., normal childhood behavior).

And now my Mom wonders why I have so much difficulty meeting and relating to other people. Sheesh.

273 Good piece by Klavan. Klavan groks the Breitbartian truth - Politics is downstream of Culture.

There's Something Happening Here: Conservatives Are Catching On to the Culture!
http://tinyurl.com/phlfmca

In the past I used to come to these gatherings and harangue people about the need to utilize new media to fight back against the left-wing slant of Hollywood and the publishing industry. I would make speeches about how we had to let go of the idea that conservative entertainment is synonymous with family-friendly stories with heroic heroes and happy endings. Not that there's anything wrong with such stories. But if that's the only vision conservatism has of the world, it will quickly become irrelevant.

After a while, though, I stopped haranguing. For one thing, these last six years have been a sort of political zombie apocalypse with old, dead left-wing ideas coming back to life to devour the living flesh of freedom. I felt that criticizing the good guys was a waste of time when what we needed was to give our full attention to fighting back against the zombies.

But also, when people asked me what non-artists could do to help, I could only answer: support pro-liberty artists; buy our books; see our movies; watch our videos; create cultural think tanks, review venues, awards and so on. Stop worrying whether a given work will convince the other side; first you build a cool and vibrant culture, then they'll come. People were always sympathetic but unresponsive. The culture was never their top priority. After all, here come the zombies.

But I think the re-election of Barack Obama may have changed all that. The fact Obama got re-elected -- despite his rampant anti-Americanism and gross incompetence -- finally awakened the right to the fact that another ad buy by Karl Rove won't change the nation's wrong direction. How can it when the very foundations of liberty have been eaten away from under us by sixty years of leftist movies, books, college classes and news programs? If people want to win their country back, the long game of culture is the only game in town.

I begin to feel that the lovers of liberty are getting into that game at last. Which is great. Because we'll win it. We're better, smarter and faster than the left, and we practice while they sleep. Plus we're right about what's good and true and they're wrong. Once we break their monopoly on the media, they'll be finished.

What he would do would say either "Silly me, I'm sorry," or even worse, "What -- we're having a good time here, me and you! We're enjoying this meal to the max!"

Like I said, he never displays overt malice - -he just does sadistic mind games when he can "get away with it."

He's also a great proponent of contradicting people and telling them their feelings aren't valid. So if I had pointed out that he was trapping me there, he'd say, "Oh, me and you are team! We're showing all those unappreciative people already trying to leave that we two really understand how great this place was, whereas they didn't didn't get it."

Or, in a more clear example, if there are four people in a car, and someone says, "Should we go bowling, or watch a movie?" and if one person says that they hate bowling, but Mr. Husband is the one who wants to go bowling, he's say to the other person, "Hey, you don't really hate bowling - -it's fun It's retro and ironic and hip! Give it a chance!"

"No, really, I hate bowling."

"Well then we should definitely go bowling so you learn to like it!

Zombie:

In addition to maneuvering, you might want to take active measures.

It sounds like the boy assumes that everyone will exercise the usual and customary "conservative" politeness we all normally display (specifically, YOU, while clearly inconvenienced, waited and said nothing)... and he depends on it for his ... fun.

Next time, when others have clearly started to leave, ask him in a clear voice that others will hear, to allow you to pass by ... give no reason. You might have to put your hand on his shoulder to get his attention.

My guess is that he is not expecting this. He expects that you will wait, as everyone else does.

If he immediately moves, you win. If he says something, and does not move, stand up, lean over and ask again, and a bit more loudly. Start moving to get past him. You will have to play this out.

Manners are a two way street. No one should be asked - especially an implied asking - to accommodate someone who does not understand the manners expected in a social situation*. No random guest should be imposed upon this way without warning. That is inconsiderate.

*If you are bringing a guest that does not know the manners of the host it is on you to clue the host and the guest. You are responsible to make sure all goes smooth. I know some people like that....and you should have reminded him.
That's where you separate the sheep from the goats, because the kind
ones that are just clueless will go, "oh, silly me, I'm sorry" where the
abusive mean ones will try to make it your fault.

Posted by: cthulhu

What he would do would say either "Silly me, I'm sorry," or even
worse, "What -- we're having a good time here, me and you! We're
enjoying this meal to the max!"

Like I said, he never displays overt malice - -he just does sadistic mind games when he can "get away with it."

He's also a great proponent of contradicting people and telling them
their feelings aren't valid. So if I had pointed out that he was
trapping me there, he'd say, "Oh, me and you are team! We're showing all
those unappreciative people already trying to leave that we two really
understand how great this place was, whereas they didn't didn't get it."

Or, in a more clear example, if there are four people in a car, and
someone says, "Should we go bowling, or watch a movie?" and if one
person says that they hate bowling, but Mr. Husband is the one who wants
to go bowling, he's say to the other person, "Hey, you don't really hate bowling - -it's fun It's retro and ironic and hip! Give it a chance!"

"No, really, I hate bowling."

"Well then we should definitely go bowling so you learn to like it!

Posted by: zombie at November 16, 2014 11:22 PM (K4YiS)

Well, that's pushing pretty hard against the limit....but, yeah, I've known a guy who was that level of clueless. In case you're wondering, the reason he would say that other people's feelings aren't valid is that he could not perceive even the slightest trace of them. In his case, however, his own feelings about things were oddly stunted, as well.

The "powder your nose" gambit sounds like maybe a better play.

But, seriously, you have a wide range of options besides "doormat", even if you want to stay in contact with your friend.

My condolences. I occasionally see this sort of situation, and the only thing I can do is offer advice.

Once, perhaps every 10 years or so, some guy in a work setting will try to maneuver the "situation" his way, like maybe a marketer or recruiter will stick out an arm to try to turn me to walk his direction. Usually, I, and most people, react to this as the gesture of a friend, but it's not. I find that I have to raise my arm to block, and see how things unfold. Usually, the guy "realizes" ... and there are no more problems.

Women are usually more difficult to react to, since their gesture will be a hand grab. An inside-to-outside-to-inside drop-then-rise hand motion (think judo-aikido-ju jitsu) usually breaks the grip. Then some words ...

My guess is that he is not expecting this. He expects that you will wait, as everyone else does.

Well, I was going to ask just how much you were willing to tolerate this clown's behavior, but this gave me a clue about your tolerance level.I've been around a few personality disorder types and you have to learn their triggers. Once you get those, you exploit it by not reacting with any other reaction than amusement while you work on triggering them. The goal is to trigger him to snap.Normally, I just avoid this, but in some cases other people actually have a need whether they know it or not to see who that person is. If you're good with confrontation and emotional control, this will work.Otherwise, best to grin and bear it.

Well this is from a guy's perspective so YMMV but when someone deliberately violates social protocol they also forfeit the same from you.

So I would have stated my request to leave the table in a loud enough voice that other tables could hear me - at least several times. Usually just making something 'public' alters people's behavior. If that didn't work I would have declared very loudly, 'I am leaving this table now - let me by or I will do it myself!' And then do just that.

Of course the more lady-like way would be to yell out 'Help. Help! Can anyone help me get out of this table area?' And get the wait staff involved. If your friend gets upset, just explain that you asked him to let you out 5 times (or whatever the count is) and he wouldn't. Unless something is wrong with her, she'll at least know internally that her husband was in the wrong.

When someone violates social norms this severely, a public embarrassing incident should be expected. And might be the only thing that they can learn from.

"It'll be just a minute."
"No. NOW."
"What's your problem?"
"Why can't you move? Are you afraid of moving for some reason?"
"Oh geez. I just need ONE MINUTE."
"I don't have a minute. Why are you afraid to move?"

Honestly, although I'd probably get his fist in my face, I'd make it about his manhood. Why are you afraid? What is your problem? Is this how you get your kicks?

I know it's not helpful to you zombie, but I'm to the point where I've lost so many friendships trying to be the nice guy, I don't care anymore. I'd do this and if I never saw either of them again, I'd just say it's worth it not to deal with that complete asshole husband.

I had a similar situation basically with a friend who met a woman (whom he's since married). No matter WHAT I said or did, she was offended and the guy then would expect me to apologize. I finally got so sick of saying I was sorry for being born, that I just finally wrote off the both of them. Sure I still miss that guy, but it just. wasn't. worth. it. anymore.

I have a saying which I am always telling my kids.

"If you're not afraid to embarrass yourself you can absolutely mortify someone else. "

I would have slid under the table, gotten on my hands and knees, and then crawled out from under it, perhaps even barking like a dog.

Or something equally outrageous. Or course i've got a reputation for failing to recognize normal social boundaries, but it works for me. The people I consider my friends are fully aware of my quirks and like me anyways.

I'm not kidding. When you tell someone something directly, such as, " I don't want to go bowling," or "I need to get out of this seat, please move," and they don't do it, time to stop being nice. It's the only way they'll learn.

Even if he has some kind of personality disorder, he'll never learn to deal appropriately with people as long as they put up with his crap.

I have a sister who is bossy, and narcissistic. Last Christmas dinner my brother in law said to her point blank, "You need to mind your own business."
At Easter she was on her best behavior.
Posted by: nerdygirl

Well, yes, actually, he has gotten yelled at and dressed down many times. That's why he has basically no real friends.

When this happens, he does what all emotional bullies do -- flip-flops into victim mode, gets all sad and pouty and literally babylike and almost cries, trying to gain sympathy. I've only seen this a couple times, but it was SWEET to see him humiliated and change personalities in an instant.

Look, if you knew me, you'd know that I have the capacity to absolutely destroy people in debates, or socially, if I so choose. The problem is not that I don't know what to do. If I wanted to, I could literally drive him to suicide, like I was Hannibal Lector whispering to the guy in the next cell.

No, the problem is not that -- the problem is that I value my friendship with his wife, so he has Magical Protected Status, which compels me to bite my tongue.

Now she's inexplicably grown attached to him, but simultaneously due to career success her self-esteem has start to skyrocket, and maybe she'll awake from her delusion that no decent man would ever have her.

She's also looking better and dressing better than she has in years, which I secretly hope is her unconsciously preparing to get back out onto the mating game.

Did I tell you all the latest about my FB friend who's convinced the world is ending the day after tomorrow? She posted a link about how somewhere in TX, kids are being taught that the founding fathers were racists. Of course she now believes this is what kids EVERYWHERE are being forced to accept.

Anyway, I wrote back: yes, that's wrong, *but* the founding fathers were... complicated. My examples: Jefferson owned slaves; and Lincoln, at least in the Lincoln-Douglas debates, stated he didn't believe blacks were in any way equivalent to white people.

Well, she responded that she agreed about Jefferson, but why was I *lying* about Lincoln?

I tried to explain. I told her I personally thought Lincoln was a great man, then tried to compare him to... Martin Luther, who was also great, although he was so anti-semitic that he got quoted a lot by a guy named Hitler.

Well, she then called me a Hitler sympathizer because I believed ol' Adolf's statements about Luther.

I gave up at that point.

Some people, all you can do when they make some utterly shitheaded utterance, is pat their heads and say "yes, yes, dear, now drink your milk." Anything else you say will cause them to have a reaction that will in turn cause YOU to have to check straight into a mental hospital by the next morning.

398 Zombie, it sounds like your friend's husband is a narcissist. The APA eliminated psychopath/sociopath/associative personality disorder from the DSM-V, but narcissistic personality disorder more or less picks up from there.

As such you can't "fix" it. You have to decide if your friendship is worth putting up with this guy's games - and narcissists are all about the games. If so, then all you can do is try to minimize their effect.

Here's an example of me trying to be forceful and delicate with him at the same time. (This happened earlier this year.)

[Mr. Autistic Asshole leans against a rickety railing]

Me: "Uh, as I mentioned before, don't lean against that railing, because it's rickety and might break loose."

Him: "Oh, it's alright, nothing's gonna happen."

Me: "Please don't lean against it."

Him: [Laughing] "What are you worried about? It's safe. I'm fine."

Me: [Seething] "OK, fine, lean against it, fall and die. But you should know, I will NOT go to your funeral, nor will I shed a tear."

Him: [Pretend-laughing, to diffuse the tension] "Ha ha, that's OK, you don't need to come to my funeral."

After this he sort of pseudo-leaned against it for a couple of minutes, to prove his dominance, but I could notice that his leaning now was not actually testing the railing's strength. Then he casually strolled inside to attend to other social duties, imagining that he had "won the round."

I have a jillion tales like this.

425 Zombie, if I might be permitted, speaking from a position of unalloyed ignorance of you and the people involved: disengage.

It's not worth getting into with this asshole. Just avoid social occasions with him, and limit yourself to lunches with your friend, etc. Life is too short to waste time, energy, and stomach lining on assholes you don't have to deal with (as opposed to, say, ones at work).

Don't say anything, don't get the wind up, just inexplicably be unavailable whenever they propose to meet you as a couple. It's better for the soul (said as someone who has butted heads all too many times).

Eventually she'll shitcan him, and the problem will go away. Or not. Either way, you're better off.

Just say. "You know, I just don't enjoy being with your man. Sorry. Maybe a personality flaw on my end. But I'm worried about him doing something that might get me wound up and him wound up, and I don't ever want to embarrass you or for him to embarrass you about that kind of crap. I'd still love to see you on your own when we can, though."

I admit that if I tried it, the woman's response would most likely be "Sayonara asshole! Sorry my boyfriend is so threatening to you!!" Still, at least you tried to explain yourself to your friend, and to salvage the relationship you had just with her.

I'm getting a real feeling that this guy -- and your friend -- and the uncle -- are all in a certain cultural matrix defined by your 'African-American' heritage. And I think that heritage is why you're stymied about devising responses -- you're very cosmopolitan, yourself, but feel constrained to act in a certain way "en famille". And that way includes patterns of thought. You should be using you cosmopolitan brain to construct actions that can be read as accommodating within that social matrix but further your cosmopolitan goals in the real world. Be the subversive we know you can be.

There is a similar one made by a shop, available on-line for order and currently sold-out. Then, there is the actual one hand-made by a personal friend of Matt Taylor as a gift to him. She had speculated on making more commercially, but so far as I know has yet to do so. Since she is an individual seamstress, she'd be backordered into the next decade pretty rapidly.

Posted by: zombie at November 16, 2014 11:05 PM

I can relate to this. But w/out meeting the guy I can't venture an opinion, all I can offer is my experience.

We had a couple we were great friends w/ for years. Took vacations together, went out to eat every Fri, spent a lot of time together.

The key was she was our friend first, she hooked up w/ him when his parents bought the restaurant we all worked at and he got divorced. They kinda used us to solidify their relationship.

He was always a very self centered prick, but if he liked you he was very generous and a good time. A lot of people didn't like him and his manipulative ways, but we took it in stride, as we loved his wife.

Well years later, we called it quits, just too much BS for too long. Meals out together when he has to spend them answering cell phone calls and ignoring us was it.

Sounds like you are at that point. The wife knows he's an asshole, guess that's her problem now.

I'm pretty laid back, but I have a strict rule that I won't put myself in uncomfortable situations knowingly.

Stay friends w/ the wife if you want, but don't subject yourself to that dining experience again. BWTFDIK

Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD)

Actually, you're pretty much correct in your analysis.

But with one big proviso:

She THINKS (falsely) that he is the only man saving her from spinsterhood.

Or least used to think -- luckily, her self-esteem has really started to skyrocket recently, due to scoring some big work-related successes.

She used to think she was frumpy-looking and had too weird of a personality to ever really get the Top Men to pay attention to her. But recently she's starting to look much more fabulous and (literally) training herself to smile in public, and it's also retroactively dawning her that various men in the past whom she thought were merely mocking her or just toying with her were in fact actually attracted to her, and she now regrets, "What was thinking -- that high-status guy really was after me!"

But that was all in the past. But maybe, just maybe, her new status and looks will attract ever higher-status guys, and she'll finally realized what a total loser douchebag her husband really is.

I hate to advocate for marriage dissolution, but honestly she could SO much better.

Ah yeah... sorry, this sounds like 2+2=5 territory.

Perhaps a simple edit is in order: you said he got into a fight with a bunch of thugs... do a 'detail' insert and have either (A) the police call him up and tell him they found his wallet, or (B) the thugs show up (via the wallet's info) for round #2.

Then you'll have an excuse for the character to display his 'iron-skillet-fu' since he's busy cooking that schnitzel.

Very astute question.

But the answer is not easily explained, while maintaining anonymity.

Let's see if I can say this in a way that is both clear and obscure:

He is in reality a member of a semi-aggrieved class that is not currently trendy in his progressive circles, so he instead pretends to be a member of a different semi-aggrieved class that is currently much more trendy in its aggrievedness.

If I actually told you the reality of his real identity versus his pretend identity, you'd die laughing.

And so when in all seriousness he claims membership in this semi-aggrieved class directly to the faces of actual members of this semi-aggrieved class, they either laugh him out of the room, or physically expel him from the premises.

And yet -- final proof of his insanity -- he still persists in his claims.

S ampersand W, obviously. Model 66, 2.5 inch, nickel finish? (heck, could even be clued, with the colors and lighting in the photo)? Almost looks like a 3-inch barrel, dunno if M66s came in that size.

Just cuz there was the Colt thing, thought we should nail down that revolver type. All threads eventually become gun threads (or music ones, at night ......).

You know what the worst part of zombie's situation (that everyone else missed but me)?

The fact that she has to hide her true ideology from these people and keep biting her tongue when they spout their Left Wing bile in her presence.

Posted by: Soothsayer

Thank you for noting this!

However, I am sometimes so brutal -- to both of them -- with the truth, that they are getting suspicious about my loyalties.

The problem is, you see, that I am vastly more informed, knowledgable and experienced than they are about political matters, so they know they can't really challenge me. I also have "street cred" that totally intimidates them.

So when I rattle off mindblowing "counter-intuitive" frameworks about which they were previously unaware, and do so from the stance of someone even more hardcore leftwing than they are, I sometimes leave them (even him) speechless. Tho yes, sometimes he does try to "correct" me or reframe the debate, but I run circles around him, then drop the topic and not press the issue. I'm either slowly converting them, or slowly convincing them that I'm so left-wing that I'm right-wing, or maybe both.

A favorite trick of mine is to tell a tale of utter malfeasance and corruption about some politician or historical character, and then they'll listen rapt, and reply (assuming that we're all in agreement), ""Wow, that racist conservative is an awful person!" ...and then I'll blow their minds by noting, "Oh, didn't I mention -- this was [progressive icon]!"

Stunned silence.

That's how I get my revenge, actually.

571 Today the Border Patrol agent at the checkpoint on the way back from the range laughed and smiled when I thanked him for his service and said I was hoping for a revolt a la 2006 over immigration lawlessness. Can not even imagine morale and scuttlebutt in his circles (actually, I can - an agent used to skate at Friday hockey pickups and he was young/new, and already trying to get out, and was so happy somebody knew about their situation and was also outraged by the lawlessness - he drove 100 miles each way just to play in that scrimmage, and was at a different level, had played Div I at a small New England college).

It's like a "when did you stop beating your wife" question -- all the problems are in the setup, so there can be no effective answer. Because of all his annoying traits, the one I find MOST annoying is his casual and self-assured anti-Americanism.

Like so many asshole progs, he just cavalierly insults America as a matter of course, assuming it will earn him kudos from the fellow reflexively anti-American proggo douchebags around him.

If people are drinking beers, and one is an American microbrew and one is a European microbrew -- he will always automatically insult the American beer. 615 Whew! Finally got to the end of the thread.

Sorry for falling so far behind -- I know it messes up the flow of the conversation.

And for the (scratches head) doubters: If I was going to make up a wild and crazy story just to play with your minds, why would I make up such a mild and commonplace story, like "One of my houseguests is kind of an asshole and sometimes does weird passive-aggressive gambits"? Whew! Finally got to the end of the thread.

Sorry for falling so far behind -- I know it messes up the flow of the conversation.

And for the (scratches head) doubters: If I was going to make up a
wild and crazy story just to play with your minds, why would I make up
such a mild and commonplace story, like "One of my houseguests is kind
of an asshole and sometimes does weird passive-aggressive gambits"? I
mean, why not go to town and say I was kidnapped by Space Alpacas?

The pedestrian nature of my (true) tale is evidence for its believability, not vice versa.

618 Inspector Trout of Scotland Yard scratching his head in puzzlement while interviewing Zombie. "Let me get this straight. You found your house guest quite dead in the library. Zombie looking a mite crestfallen at being a proper host. "Well yes."

Trout. "Right. One of your other house guests wouldn't happen to be a chap with an organ. Assisted by this willowy brunette in Russian peasant attire who doesn't speak a word?"

655 Well, on the subject of Colt, it seems that they have a real problem competing with Philippine made steel 1911s that are made at least as good and have better triggers out of the box and sell for less than half what Colt charges. One niche that Colt might go after is the pocket pistol. They could bring back the 1903 and 1908 and maybe another one chambered in .32 NAA. They would cost an inordinate amount if made in Connecticut but maybe they could make them in the Philippines and just stamp the Colt logo at their plant.

662 This issue is called the anchor babies, I used that term this morning, I shouldn't have, it's ugly and it's offensive to what it is. What it really goes to is the root of the most destructive part of our current immigration policy, you're splitting up families" he said.
*****************************

What utter bullshit.

It is not our "immigration policy" that is splitting up families of illegal aliens. It the the affirmative decision by those family members to violate U.S. law that is breaking up their families (or used to be, before Obama stopped deporting illegal aliens).

Would this media person advocate doing away with ALL laws that "break up families"? How about laws against robbing banks, or invading other peoples' homes? When criminals commit those deeds and get caught and go to prison, their families are "broken up" when their daddies (or mommies) are sent to the big house for years. Is that a "social injustice"? Should we just do away entirely with any and all laws that might affect people who have children? Should every parent have a free pass to break any law they want, just so their kids won't ever have to suffer any adverse consequences of their parents' law-breaking? Why is it only the families of illegal aliens that lefties care about?

I'm so sick of this liberal palaver about illegal aliens as "victims" of their own choices to break our laws. U.S. taxpayers are being robbed blind, to the tune of many billions of dollars every year, by law-breaking illegal aliens. And thousands of Americans are victimized every year, in much more violent ways, by illegal alien criminals. Where is the left's sympathy for us?

Last year the Obama administration paid out billions of dollars in Medicare Part D prescription drug benefits to a few thousand illegal aliens. Meanwhile, hundreds of U.S. veterans died because the VA wouldn't give them an appointment to see a doctor (and then lied about it). Where is the left's sympathy for the dead veterans and their families? They have none, but they cry buckets over the plight of illegal aliens who are robbing us blind every year.

Billions of tax dollars every year paid out in food stamps (illegally) to illegal aliens. Billions of tax dollars every year paid out in phony "tax credits" to illegal aliens. Billions of dollars every year paid out in prescription drug benefits to illegal aliens. Meanwhile our veterans, who fought for us and to whom we made promises to care for their medical needs, suffer and die waiting for a doctor's appointment they never get.

The way opinion has been shifting about pot, especially with 2 states actually implementing legal marijuana and another 2 plus DC legalizing it this year, a poll from 2012 about legalizing marijuana might as well be from 1958.
