Tony Stewart Runs Over and Kills Fellow Driver In Race

This article suggests reasons to doubt that this was intentional.

Early reports, and video of the deadly run-down (content warning) at Deadspin.

If you don't want to watch the video, here's about what happened: Stewart and another driver, Ward, got into some jockeying for position and Ward's car wound up spinning out and hitting the wall.

Ward exited the car and began walking (dangerously!) across the track, apparently looking for Stewart's car to come around again. As Stewart approached him, Ward stopped in the middle of the track and pointed at Stewart to call him out, to accuse him of something or to just curse him and challenge him.

At this point Stewart's car runs down and kills Ward. I don't want to speculate whether Stewart tried to run him down, or didn't attempt to swerve out of the way, or tried to miss Ward but failed, because I have no idea whatsoever about steering a racecar.

Thanks to the cobs.

Running around on the track in the middle of a race, just because you're mad??? Did he forget that he'd left his Iron Man suit at home that day?

6 "At this point Stewart's car runs down and kills Ward."

Really don't think that's an accurate description.

Stewart's rear right tire made contact with Ward. The big question is why that is.

Stewart's car only turned to the right after making contact with Ward, that's because Ward's body got caught up with the wheel.

7 That's awful, but I can't imagine it was intentional. Walking around a racetrack seems...Ill advised.

8 I doubt tony wanted to hit him, he wanted to show this young punk not to try to upstage him by pointing at him. as he went by he goosed the accelerator, probably wanting to spray him w/ dirt and the rear kicked out. it was reckless and stupid on tony's part. drivers walk on the track all the time after a wreck to do just this sort of thing. several other drivers went by w/o hitting him and he never stepped into the path of the tony's car. this is all on tony for trying to show what a badass he is.

9 How many times have we seen wrecked drivers get out of their car to confront the perceived villain in their tragedy? I've seen them throw their helmets at cars. Something bad was bound to happen.

10 Ace,

I mentioned earlier that on ESPN's site, the comments were about 90/10 that Stewart did it on purpose. Looked at a couple racing sites and it was 75/25 that Stewart did nothing wrong. Doubt we will see much in the MSM that is based on well-informed opinion.

12 Drivers on foot confronting other drivers who've wreck them on the racing surface ... is actually somewhat common. Dumb, but something that happens with some regularity.

Nascar actually advertises with a famous highlight of Stewart doing it at Bristol when he gets out of his car and throws his helmet at the guy who wrecked him, bouncing the helmet off the windshield. The crowd loved it.

14 A witness statement last night, made by a driver that was in the stands watching the race, said it looked like Stewart was trying to spray the guy with dirt as he want past and that he lost traction & slid into him. Stewart & the dead driver also supposedly had an altercation yesterday before the race. IF this is true, wouldn't involuntary manslaughter charges be appropriate?

What an idiot. And agreed that there should be something in the rule book to forbid drivers from getting out the car and running around the track, unless the Yellow Flag is out and your car is burning.

29 The headline "runs down" is misleading, Ace. That's not what happens.

It's not clear that Stewart even saw Ward before the last second. It's dark. The track is poorly lit. Guy is wearing a black firesuit. The car in front of Stewart swerved to avoid Ward. They are coming off turn 2.

The phrase "runs down" implies Stewart saw and aimed at Ward. There is not evidence to support that.

Ward made contact with Stewart's right rear tire and was dragged/thrown/entangled. Kinda unclear.

As I said in an earlier thread, Ward took purposeful action to get dangerously close to Stewart. That's clear. Did Stewart then take purposeful action that resulted in his tire striking and killing Ward? Impossible to tell at this point.

I do think the phrase "runs down" is irresponsible and not supported by the facts or the video.

The bad action that Stewart may or may not have taken was likely revving the throttle as he passed Ward, possibly to intimidate him or spray him with dirt. In that scenario the backend might have kicked out and struck Ward.

It's not clear at all that that happened. Ward might have slipped. Also, you have to accelerate to steer these cars. the cars slip and slide, that's the attraction. If Stewart saw him at the last moment then he would have accelerated to get traction to swerve -- which would look nearly identical to a purposeful revving to intimidate/spray Ward.

It's really quite difficult to tell what happened from that video. But I think that video does rule out the claim that Stewart "ran down" Ward.

Four wheel drive will be different. If the front tires spin tre front end will go left and back will step right. Rear wheels spin and rear steps out to the left. Right hand rule of angular momentum. Curl your right hand with the fingers in rotation direction and your thumb indicates the direction of the force vector.

40 The best evidence we have that Stewart took purposeful action and gunned it, which threw the back-end out and struck Ward, is the eyewitness account in the initial news report. Maybe he had the perfect eyeline, but there's no indication of that at this point.

41 Just watched it, and I definitely saw Stewart's car do "something" right before impact with the race track pedestrian. Whether he was trying to make a point or get clear of the guy I don't know. He should've just kept driving normally, the kid wouldn't have been hit. Error in judgment, unavoidable mishap (on Stewart's part, obviously Ward had no business being there) or deliberate act? It's hard to say. I can't imagine Stewart wanted to kill anyone last night, but did he fuck up? Maybe. I'll have to watch the Zapruder-like re-creations to form an opinion.

It's not clear from the video that Stewart did anything to go towards Ward or did anything to drive out of the way.

78 I think it's possible that Stewart intended to scare/spray the kid as he drove past. I'm just not seeing any clear evidence that that's what happened.

Saw this elsewhere on the interwebz. The "because sprint car" line refers to the fact these cars race in a state of a constant controlled slide and you have to accelerate to get traction to turn. It also assumes the "gunned the engine" reports in the media are accurate. I think you hear it in the video, but I'm not positive.
----
I don't think Stewart intended to hit him but I see two possibilities:

1 - Stewart gunned the engine as he went past to try to intimidate Ward, the back end kicked out ("because sprint car") and accidentally hit Ward.
2 - Stewart gunned the engine as he went past because sprint cars are like jet skis or boats and don't turn real good unless they have throttle ("because sprint car"), trying to miss Ward and accidentally hit Ward.

87 As far as Stewart "accelerating" just before the impact, do we know this is what happened?

Downshifting will cause the engine to rev, so Stewart could have been trying to slow down.

88 Reposted from an earlier thread. I'm not a race car driver, but this is the closest I've personally come to being in this situation:

One time my car broke down in the southbound left-hand lane of I-95 near Philly at rush hour on a Friday evening.

I put my flashers on and got out of the car as fast as possible because I was certain that someone was going to plow into it at any second. I got well away from it, walking along the median.

I stood on the median for a good half-hour before the wall-to-wall 70 mph traffic thinned out enough for me to run to the side of the road.

Posted by: rickl at August 10, 2014 03:26 PM (sdi6R)

89 Surely some dirt track driver will give analysis, but it seems to me the car kicks out to the right from losing traction, when he gunned it. Even under caution.

And it seems he surely saw him in plenty of time ... given his history, probably wanted to scare him of even hit him ... seems I heard he had even threatened drivers before, to stay out of his way.

The kid was stupid, but I doubt he was going to try to tackle the car ... but Stewart swung it out, and was enough of a veteran to control what happened. It looked to me like the kid tried to jump away before hit ... maybe he just misjudged Stewart's line.

But I sure don't see how gunning the engine gets Stewart more control, or moves the car left. Need more video.

116 Big question for me is whether Stewart really did gun the engine and, if so, why?

There are perfectly innocent explanations, from Stewart's perspective, for what happened. There's also a damning explanation that would seem to raise the possibility of manslaughter. Both explanations fit the available evidence.

Hopefully they have another camera angle from the back or side. But even that might not be able to clarify things.

A lot of this comes down to what Stewart saw and when he saw it and what his intent was.

Right, especially dirt track sprint car racing. The whole point and the reason the drivers and fans like it, is it's so hard to control and cars are sliding all over. This isn't asphalt. It's a dirt track which gets watered down on purpose so it's extra slick and slippery so the cars slide around and put on a good show.

1 - Stewart gunned the engine as he went past to try to intimidate
Ward, the back end kicked out ("because sprint car") and accidentally
hit Ward.

2 - Stewart gunned the engine as he went past because sprint cars
are like jet skis or boats and don't turn real good unless they have
throttle ("because sprint car"), trying to miss Ward and accidentally
hit Ward.

Posted by: Costanza Defense at August 10, 2014 03:24 PM (ZPrif)<<<
Think you've been spot on in your posts.
Hard to say if Stewart could've even seen Ward (guy wearing dark fire suit and helmet) with the lighting, with a massive wing on the right side of the car, if Ward was on a bit of banking on the track.
Hard to tell whose engines are revving. Still lots of other cars on the track. Could've been the camera picking up one closer to the grandstands circling while under caution, closing a gap between the car in front. The video, while a bit helpful, makes so many, many things "hard to tell."

We can't really, but eyewitness reports said he did and the audio on the video sounds like he did, kinda mostly.

Honestly I wonder if that sound could be caused by having a human being sucked into your wheel well like that. I don't know. I'm guessing no.

As mentioned before, if Stewart saw him at the last second and tried to swerve, he also likely would rev the engine to get traction to swerve.

Pitchers fault for doing what pitchers ALWAYS do when a batter creeps over the plate? Or is he supposed to know that the hitter has no idea how quickly a 95MPH fastball will get there?

the in/out box is essentially a directly link from engine to rear end. You have one gear - everything you got.
Your only other choice is out - decoupling the engine from the rearend.

This is the reason that sprint cars have to be pushed to start.

Imagine that your transmission has only high gear (maybe 4th or 5th) and neutral. That's the kind of transmission sprint cars have. When you see them start by a truck pushing them, it serves two purposes. First, they use this push to start the vehicle. Second, they can't move from a stopped position since the tranny is geared for top speed only. They put the tranny in neutral, the truck starts to push them, they slam the car into gear (no clutch), it starts, and they drive away.

232 A key element that, to me, points to a non-deliberate action is the fact that car ahead of Stewart had to swerve to avoid Ward. This increases the likelihood that Stewart didn't see Wart at all until the last moment with is vision blocked by other cars.

In racing cars often hit stalled/stopped cars in broad daylight seeming with plenty of time to see them. How? They just ... don't see them. And you often see that where the lead car swerves in time and then the car behind just plows into it.

If drivers can simply not see a stopped car in broad daylight, as happens with some regularity, then not seeing a man on foot, dressed in black, at night is totally plausible.

Thus sayeth potential Dem preezy candidate Lizzy Warren about ISIS and TFG's actions in Iraq. (from HA) So I'm picturing these negotiations --

Jon Cary -- Let's negotiate.

ISIS -- Submit or die.

Jon Cary -- Can we have a few hours to talk this offer over?

Posted by: pep at August 10, 2014 04:01 PM (4nR9/)

241 I was going to give this a pass, since there is a lot of misinformation and supposition here, most of it from people who don't know shit about racing but have decided they do.

I do know a little bit about it. I have been a fan for almost 60 years -- including attending more than a few night races on dirt tracks -- and, through my day job, have driven at high speed on race tracks (though I never drove in actual races), driven race cars, and spent time with race drivers from all forms of the sport. I even met Tony Stewart once.

What all y'all need to know are a couple of basic things:

1) Race cars are not like street cars. Especially sprint cars. They don't have transmissions like your Honda Civic does, and instead of differentials for the driving wheels they have what are called "locked" rear ends. Makes a big difference on dirt, and affects even the basics of steering (or going straight, for that matter) at any speed;

2) Racing isn't like driving on the street. Things happen very fast, and all too often the driver in a bad situation is a passenger. No matter how skilled, he is sitting there watching things unfold;

3) The field of vision in a race car is very narrow (you're not there to watch the scenery). In a sprinter, it is even narrower. At night, on a poorly lit track (this is not like Daytona, where big-ass lights keep things fairly bright), vision is worse still. A driver in a black firesuit will not be easy to see;

4) Stewart is a hothead, and may even be a nasty prick. I don't know, didn't see it. But he is not a killer. The media, who hate anything dangerous like racing, eat that "blood feud" crap up like flies on shit. They have no idea what goes through a race driver's head, what happens during a race, or even the physics involved with controlling a race car.

I suppose Stewart will become the Man You Love to Hate in racing, and the genius Prius-driving fuckwads at the NY Slimes will howl for Justice to be Done. I have much more reason to pass an informed judgment than they do, and a hell of a lot more knowledge to back it up. That won't stop them howling to their faithful readers, who will parrot the nonsense. In my case, I can't say for certain what happened. So I won't.

Would be nice if those of us who always talk about "sense," "getting all the facts" and not jumping to knee-jerk conclusions would react in that way here. I don't expect it; howling mobs are everywhere.

Yeah, well that doesn't work for some people. A woman that goes to my exercise guy got a new Mercedes and couldn't figure out how to get the gas cap open.

She was locking the car when she got out to pump the gas and that was locking the gas cap.

"The engineer got to look him right in the eye as he ran over him."

I read people say things like this before. Maybe I'm missing something(a train runs right through the center of my town several times a day), but there doesn't seem to be much of a window looking frontwards, only to the sides, and the train(engine too)is pretty tall.

They told us a story like yours about the train conductor when we were kids, and it scared the bejeezits out of me. It was the story of Screaming Jenny. She was raised by a single mother who squatted in an abandoned arsenal and tended bar at a local tavern. One night little Jenny bumped into a kerosense lamp, and her cotton nightgown went up in flames. The child ran onto the tracks and was run down by a speeding locamotive. The driver was terrified, but so were many others who encountered her tortured spirit and heard its ghostly shrieks on dark, moonless nights.

259 To imagine Stewart did this intentionally is a logical leap of epic proportions. WHY give up an amazing life and career he has built for himself to murder someone in front of thousands of fans?

Things not being considered:

1) They were under yellow and this was a bush league race by Stewart's standards. He may not have had his full attention on the track ahead.
2) The idiot he hit was wearing black on a dark night.
3) The car in front of Stewart swerved to miss the guy. Stewart may not have even seen him until the last second.
4) Stewart had no expectation of some moron standing in the middle of the track yelling at him.
5) The fact he revved his engine and hit him with his back wheel supports the idea that Stewart was surprised to see an idiot standing in the middle of the track and overreacted to miss him, this swerving and hitting him with the back tire.

To prove a crime you have to prove motive and there was no motive for Stewart to murder this idiot in front of 1000 witnesses.

265 To Please A Lady.

It was just on TCM, like, two nights ago. Spooky parallels.

A couple of you will recall that up through 1955, AAA was the sanctioning body for American racing, and after the disastrous 1956 season, shut it all down. USAC was thrown together overnight on a shoestring to keep the scene going. Sprint car racing has been "dying" ever since. It's sure taking its time about it. Other hand, there are only four dirt track miles left in the country. That was really dangerous.

Yes, that was the same year most of Europe outlawed racing, and the ban still applies in some countries, notably Switzerland.

It seems possible that he might have tried to punk him a little bit. It also seems possible that having a guy walking towards his car wasn't in his mind in the range of possibilities and he didn't see him until the last second.

Foreigners sometimes have the perception of the US as the wild west with guns everywhere, based off movies. People that don't know shit about hockey assume people are dropping the gloves and fighting all game long, with Hanson brothers type brawls on a regular basis. And people that don't know shit about racing might think people just walk out there and throw punches as passing cars under caution all the time. But they don't. When it happens it's out on the TV all the time and goes viral on youtube.

Maybe Stewart didn't see him, maybe he did. I doubt we'll ever know for sure.

LasciviousSycophant 59 points 6 hours ago
Is there any way to prove it was Tony that gunned it?
Not by observations from us armchair sleuths who have viewed that video. We hear an engine being revved. If one pays attention to the video, one will notice that it's zoomed in to show cars across the infield. There are cars much closer to the camera that we can't see. It is far more likely that it is one of those cars that we hear.
It's also telling that when the actual crash happens, we can't hear it on the video. The audio one can hear at the time of the crash is engine sounds from the cars closest to the videographer, and not the crash sounds from the track all the way across the infield.

TheCatfromOuterSpace 73 points 12 hours ago
I have 15+ years of crew experience mostly with stock cars on short tracks.
From what I know about Tony personally and after seeing the footage, all I can think of is he was either (1) trying to avoid Ward at the last second and gunned it to try and clear him, (2) thought he was clear of Ward already and was just accelerating off the turn, or (3) he was trying to throw some clay in Ward's face.
Regardless, Ward should have stayed in his car until at least the wreckers and corner workers were there. The field was still cooling down, and to be honest, Sprint car yellow laps are highly dangerous because of everyone trying to keep their tire and oil temps up.
Also add it being a night race on a tiny bullring and nearly 1000hp short wheelbase cars with limited vis due to aero... yeah, stay in your car unless it is on fire, man.
I feel terrible for everyone involved. Best wishes to them.

The kid, Ward, created the situation that led to his death. Stewart may have tried to spray him with dirt by gunning the engine, or he may have gunned the engine in a vain attempt to avoid hitting Ward. He may not have even seen Ward until it was too late, and the engine gunning was meant as a "fuck you" to the Ward that Stewart assumed was still in his crashed car.

426 The idiot RAN into the path of a moving vehicle. He owns the consequences of his action.

If you want to judge Stewart's response, you have to first decide WHAT he was responding to. Was the guy running in front of a vehicle to commit suicide? Was he doing it to force Stewart into a wreck in retaliation?

Take your pick. Once you answer what Stewart was responding to, you are left with only one conclusion: Stewart did not create this situation.

I am not a racing fan. If you put that in front of a jury of ordinary people, it will go nowhere fast.

Up thread commenters were posting about the helmet thrower apparently not knowing the helmet thrower was Smoke.

Watch car 46. Count the frames for the speed. Compare the speed to the hotheaded superstar's car.

I don't need objectivity. Just the facts ma'am.

Generally, I enjoy your comments but I we'll have to agree to disagree on this one.

451 @425 He stopped just outside the turn. Just about the right distance for realizing his vehicle hit the guy.

452 "By law, a pedestrian can just walk out in front of a car, and it's the drivers fault if the pedestrian gets hit."

Actually, no, there is such a thing as a "dart-out", a collision no driver can avoid.

I know a lady who killed a kid who ran out from in between two parked cars. She was not going terribly fast. But, the kid was killed and the police ruled it as a dart out, and she was not charged.

453 Honestly, this is racing folks! Its a dangerous sport and when you make bad decisions, it could mean your life. Just because Tony is famous and what-not, does not mean anybody has to bash him about this. The guy was an idiot, went low on the track and expressed that he was pissed. Tony hit the gas slightly to rev past him to let him know he wasnt happy either. Just so happened he whipped out sideways and caught Ward. The revving by Tony is a common one amongst drivers. There is absolutely no need to bash Tony. I also do not appreciate your use of the words "runs him down". YOU are the kind of people that create havoc in a person's life and destroy people's careers. Mind your own business, and stay out of others. I am only a teenager and yet I believe I have more decency than YOU do! Get your facts straight and maybe learn a little about dirt track racing before you post for the world to see.

454 saw the video. the guy was ticked, lost his cool, and acted without thinking. it goes without saying that walking onto a race track in the middle of a race is not the smartest thing to do. it is tragic, but the guy shouldn't have walked across the race track like that. this is what happens when people get hot headed and act rashly.

455 whoever posted the stupid comment about pedestrians and traffic law, I have one thing to say to you:

you are dumb.

This was a race and this occurred on a race track. there is no pedestrian walkway on a race track. and in case this escaped you as well, these guys aren't exactly abiding by the speeding limits - because this isn't a public street!

alright, i am done venting. I feel better now.

456 I love how liberal TV personalities and other guys who probably let their wives drive them everywhere, talk about swerving or avoiding etc. Swerving and risking a high-speed roll into a parked race car is far, far more dangerous than keeping the wheel straight and hitting the brakes. My tactic for deer, and any wise persons tactic when faced with a dumb-ass standing in the middle of the track. It is disgusting that there may be a civil case here, with the widow telling everyone a sob story, with the implication that Tony "can afford it". Tony should be ready to counter-sue for the damage to his car and potential lost earnings.

457 Sorry, but the race was UNDER CAUTION and multiple cars passed the kid as he walked down the track WITHOUT killing him, so Tony Stewart put himself in a bad position by 1) going faster than the rest of the cars under caution and 2) attempting to spray the kid with mud/dirt being the douchebag that he is and killed him.

458 I've driven race cars on dirt for many years, and I have a few observations to give you fools who think this shit is like going to CostCo in your minivan.

1) Dirt cars turn for shit, especially at low speeds. Sprint cars are the worst of the bunch. See those 8" wide front tires? See those 24" wide rear tires? If the rears aren't spinning (IE broken traction like when they're at speed), how well do you think those cars answer the commands from the steering wheel? Answer: Not very fucking well. You don't steer a sprint car at caution speed, you suggest where you'd like it to go, preferably many hundreds of yards before you get there, and hope the car listens (this is why you start early, so you can make another suggestion before its too late). There is no such thing as a last second precision steering correction in a sprint car at caution speed. Put it out of you mind, it's simply not mechanically possible.

2) Dirt cars often run brakes on only three wheels. Why? Because they use the brakes to set the car into the corner, and having no brake on the right front makes the car yaw left pretty significantly when you stomp the brakes. Works like a champ at speed. Downside? When you hit the brakes in a panic stop, the car yaws hard to the left. Most of the time you end up spinning out.

3) In order to throw the car sideways to "spray the guy with dirt", you'd have to spin the tires up and waggle the car right then left. It's not a maneuver you pull off in half a second, and not one I've ever seen anyone attempt to aim at someone on foot. It's an idiotic thing that someone who's never driven a race car thought up to explain why Stewart "had to be" at fault.

4) People on foot get hit on race tracks all the time. Every single year one or more people get hit by race cars under caution, rolling by at caution speed. The only reason this one is news is because one of the people involved is famous and rich. Who are those people and why are they on the race track? 'Cause the drivers don't have radios or mirrors or any kind of way to communicate with officials, so when they need to be realigned during a caution, someone has to go out on the race track, get the driver's attention and then tell him what to do as he whizzes by at 40-50 mph. Sometimes the official gets to close, or the driver can't see him, and he gets run over. It sucks a lot, but it happens every single year at least once. They don't always die, but a lot of times they do.

5)Race cars are very difficult to see out of, even looking forward. Dirt racing is done almost as much by feel as it is by vision. These cars are very hard to see out of in the ~30 of forward area not obstructed by the wing, for the other 330, it's not hard to see, it's impossible. I have, on more than one occasion, dodged something on the race track or flying through the air that I thought at the time was a dirt clod, but turned out to be a wheel or a drive shaft. I had no idea until I'd seen the tape after everything was over. Things are happening so fast, and you have so very little vision or control, that you can't take in all the little details. It's easier under caution, but still by no means a drive to CostCo. I can absolutely see hitting a guy who's wearing all black on the racetrack simply because you never saw him. Hell I once damned near hit a parked ATV on the race track because it was all black and parked in an area that was poorly lit.

6) Dirt racers have tearoffs on their visors. Nobody has talked about this, but it makes a HUGE difference to how well you see. A tearoff is a thin plastic sheet that you layer over the visor on your helmet so you can "tear it off" when the visor gets covered in mud. I'd run between 25 and 30 of them for a feature race (the one one at the end of the night), so I could pull on on every lap and not run out. They're great to keep the sticky mud at bay. HOWEVER, there is a down side. Every extra layer adds extra glare, and another place for dust to collect. Looking through 30 tearoffs on a dusty night at a track where the lights are poorly aimed is just about as close to racing blind as you can get. The glare is awful, and dust gets between every tearoff and dims the light coming through to something like wearing sunglasses at night. Add that to the very restricted visibility in a sprint car already, and you can see how easy it would be not even see a person on foot until you were literally already on top of them.

It's tragic that this kid died (nobody wants to see a promising young racer die on a race track), but this whole deal has been wildly over blown. Tony did not run him down on purpose, I'd be real surprised if he even saw the kid before he hit him.

The bottom line is this: Racing is dangerous, but like most things in life, it is even more dangerous if you are stupid. The kid was stupid for getting out of his car and running into a stream of oncoming race cars. He didn't deserve to die for doing something stupid like that, but at the same time, he's the one who made the call to put himself in that position where he could be killed. If he'd have stayed in his car or up near his car, he'd still be alive and pissed off a Stewart today.

I NEVER got out of my car until it became obvious that I was going to have to for the safety crews to move it. Otherwise, I'd ride into the pits on the back of the hook inside the car, belted in, because I've been hit under caution fully five minutes after the wreck was over and the mess was being cleaned up. Anything can happen on a race track, so you go out there with that in mind and act accordingly. If you don't you can get killed.

This kid found that out the hard way, and because a rich/famous guy was involved, the media has suddenly discovered that racing is a cruel mistress, and they want blood.

Well, fuck them, and fuck all these armchair assholes who think that because they drive to work every day they know exactly what its like inside a sprint car, how they drive, and what Stewart was thinking at the instant the kid got hit.

You all don't know dick, so stow your righteous indignation and legal pronouncements up your fourth point of contact.

My condolences go out to both the kid's family and Tony Stewart, neither of which will ever be the same after this shitstorm, regardless of outcome.
