Obama's Oddly Reassuring Statement to Putin

I found Obama's statement strange for how far it went out of its way to reassure Putin that no consequences will follow should he continue attacking the Ukraine (and blowing the occasional airliner out of the sky).

A President does not wish to make it impossible for an aggressive, brutish leader to back down. Brutes are shame-based creatures, and full of machismo. So no president should ever make statements which will activate the Lizard Machismo Complex of the brute's brain, and thus make it impossible for him to back down.

Well, on that score, Mission Accomplished. Obama sure didn't threaten Putin at all.

At all.

But it seems to me he went out of his way to let Putin know that Putin could get away with anything he wants.

First, Obama said:

"My preference continues to be finding a diplomatic resolution within Ukraine--I believe that can still happen, that is my preference today and it will continue to be my preference..."

Why swear, from this day until the end of days, that this will continue to be his preference? Why not leave it at "this is currently my preference?"

Putting it that way leaves open the possibility that that preference could change, without actually making any kind of threat that would activate Putin's You Can't Boss Me Around response.

Instead, Obama broadcasts that he will never seek anything other than a diplomatic solution "within Ukraine," no matter what Putin does.

This is a gratuitous reassurance to Putin. Yes, I agree that the President shouldn't bluster and make empty threats against a brute armed with nuclear missiles, but neither does he have to get on his back and show his belly like a defeated dog.

Then Obama got the part of his statement that seemed like a threat -- but wasn't:

"But if Russia continues to violate Ukraine's sovereignty and to back these separatists, and these separatists become more and more dangerous and now are risks not simply to the people inside of Ukraine, but the broader international community, then Russia will only further isolate itself from the international community and the costs for Russia's behavior will only continue to increase.

Russia will "isolate itself." America will not actively isolate Russia -- no, it will just happen (Obama hopes). The EU will not slap sanctions on Russia -- no, the "isolation" will just naturally proceed along (Obama prays).

Obama here is basically talking about Hoping for a Miracle from God, rather than sketching steps that we ourselves might undertake.

Tyrants don't care about what things an American president prays will happen.

They worry about things an American president will make happen.

Now, I already said that I don't think Obama should make direct threats. But this statement is so weak, so fearful of itself, it can't even state a vaguery in a straightforward manner.

Even the vaguery must be couched in the passive voice.

Even Obama's gauze comes shrouded by haze.

Combining those statements together, I can't see how anyone in the Kremlin could fail to read this as an American greenlight for just about anything Russia wishes to do.

And that makes me wonder why this statement was given at all -- if Obama had chosen to remain silent, at least there would have been mystery about his possible responses and current line of thinking.

Instead he went out there to tell Putin not to sweat it, that the US would not do a damned thing, ever.

That said, Russia has promised -- supposedly -- to grant inspectors "unfettered access" to the crash site, and an hour or so ago they promised that the separatists would turn over the plane's black boxes (probably after ascertaining there was no evidence on them directly suggesting Russian involvement).

134 For all his faults, and there were more than a few, I think Nixon had the perfect posture for conducting foreign policy.

The madman theory was a primary characteristic of the foreign policy conducted by U.S. President Richard Nixon. His administration, the executive branch of the federal government of the United States from 1969 to 1974, attempted to make the leaders of other countries think Nixon was mad, and that his behavior was irrational and volatile. Fearing an unpredictable American response, leaders of hostile Communist Bloc nations would avoid provoking the United States.

The peaceful, legitimately elected pro-Russian government of Ukraine, which we promised to help if ever needed, was attacked by anti-Russian activists. Instead of supporting the people we pledged to assist, we stood back and cheered the usurpers.

Just to piss off Putin.

We could have said that sure, we sympathize with the protesters, but takeover by mob isn't how we roll. Wait until the next election and make your case.

But no. Instead of siding with the majority of Ukraine and the industrialized and educated portion of the populous, we took a stand with the western sheep fuckers who can't wait for EU socialism.

If you can't do the right thing, it's best to do nothing at all.

Russia has a shit ton of gas and oil on which the EU depends. And because of that the EU won't do anything either.

208 I'll concede it's not like Americans have the stomach to really do anything about it, so what can he really say. Putin has a shit ton of leverage on Europe, so we know they aren't going to have any appetite for any real action either. It is the gravy days for bad actors, so it will get much worse.

I didn't like Romney at all, but warmed up to him over time. I just think back to how Obama and his lackeys like Maddow smirked and snarked at this crazy idea that Russia is a looming problem. It's not like it is a brilliant insight from Romney even, really. The reality based community was simply caught way off guard from this particular reality. A clear look at the reality of history would have shown this as utterly predictable. The left perverts the very term "history" to reference how people will look at us in the future rather than an account of real facts that have happened in the past. This is what happens when the "reality based" thinkers distort the reality of history.

215 The peaceful, legitimately elected pro-Russian government of Ukraine, which we promised to help if ever needed, was attacked by anti-Russian activists.

From where did these "anti-Russian activists" come, and how, exactly, did they "attack" the pea...*snicker* peace...*snicker* (no, I'll get it in a minute)... the legitimately elected government of Ukraine?

If you mean the protests which eventually turned violent after government forces started shooting, I'm not sure that counts as "attacked."

Even if it did, in no circumstances did we make an agreement with the "pro-Russian Government." We made an agreement with Ukraine. If they have civil problems, that's not something in which we should intervene.

And I don't even care over-much about the Russia/Ukraine situation, except that I'm wary of any form of Russian expansionism. What I do care about is Russia (or their proxy in the area) blowing up a civilian airliner, and essentially threatening to do it again (by not admitting what happened, or at least allowing a real investigation, they're virtually guaranteeing a repeat).

280 Obama:
"then Russia will only further isolate itself from the international community and the costs for Russia's behavior will only continue to increase."

Ace:
"Russia will "isolate itself." America will not actively isolate Russia -- no, it will just happen (Obama hopes). ...Even the vaguery must be couched in the passive voice."

I am strongly reminded of the classic (and truly brilliant) nerd joke:

---------------------

An engineer, a physicist, and a mathematician are shown a pasture containing a herd of sheep, and told to enclose them with smallest possible amount of fence.

The engineer is first. He builds a perfectly circular fence around the sheep, declaring, "A circle uses the least fence for any given area, so this is the best solution."

The physicist is next. He strings some loose netting around the sheep, and then draws the it tight around the herd, declaring, "This technique creates the shortest possible fence around all the sheep."

The mathematician is last. He looks at the sheep, he looks around the field. He thinks and thinks, and sits down and thinks some more. Then he suddenly leaps up and builds a tiny little fence around his own body, declaring, "I define myself to be on the outside!"

----------------------

This is essentially what Obama is doing -- making America's sphere of influence smaller and smaller, and then blustering that he is going to "isolate" Russia. What? Russia is self-sufficient, considering its oil reserves, and its influence is expanding.

Obama is the lone dork encircled by gang-bangers, who tries to bluff his way out by announcing to them, "Now I've got you surrounded!"

China only benefits from a US-Russian conflict. Also, MH370 had a dozen Chinese and eight Malaysians who worked for Freescale Semiconductor, which had just announced a breakthrough in cloaking technology. The company had been bought by the Beijing government in 2009.

I always thought MH370 was MH17. The Chinese brought their people home, guarding valuable military secrets, and then destroyed the plane, blaming it on Russia.

285 @199 - North's take is that there's video evidence (numbering and radar configuration) that the specific BUK track that everyone's chattering about is an earlier model that was in the possession of Ukranian forces in March and captured by the separatists sometime in June.

Now, Russian advisers may have had their hands on it after that, and it may well have shot down the triple-7, and as the separatists had in fact shot down a Ukrainian Antonov some time before there's evidence they had and used the capability. But, however complicit Putin and his lot may be in the coverup, there's at least significant doubt that the BUK track was provided directly by Russia.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at July 21, 2014 02:54 PM (QFxY5)

307 Ace,

Obama's statements here are pretty easy to understand if you realize that he never practiced law (or held any other job or real responsibility where his work was reviewed for competence/mistakes and results were expected).

Young lawyers and law school students (people who have no experience) and bad lawyers always write in the passive voice. (Everyone occasionally uses the passive voice and everyone makes mistakes in written work. I'm not talking about the occasional passive-voice, I'm talking about written work littered throughout with the passive voice).

for some reason, to a law student and young lawyer's mind, the passive voice sounds more "professional" and "lawyerly". And, it allows you to take no risks because you are not asserting that anyone identifiable is doing anything or responsible for any action.

So, every time you read a young attorney's work, you will see it littered with the passive voice.

this type of thing usually gets somewhat corrected if the attorney works in an environment where his written work is edited/corrected by those more experienced. If so, the young lawyer slowly learns to avoid the passive tense (the instinct to use the passive voice is pervasive, however, and I still catch myself using it).

Solo practitioners and simply bad attorneys tend to never learn to avoid the passive voice. Their writing never improves much because nobody corrects it or shows them how to do it correctly. (When you give your written work to a court, for instance, they generally tell you if you win or lose, but, unless for some compelling reason, make no comment on your written work - no matter how terrible it is).

So, Obama (and his selected speechwriters) writes his speeches in what he (incorrectly) believes is a smart, lawyerly, professional way, chock full of passive voice and other nonsense that would not fly if it were an assignment being passed in by a young associate at a decent law firm.

Because Obama never held a real job, never practiced law, and never had a job with responsibility where people actually reviewed, graded, edited his work - he believes this type of nonsense (a speech filled with the passive voice) is intelligent and compelling.

I'm willing to bet that if someone sat down and explained to him today what is wrong with his speech, he would not understand. He has gone too long in life with people lauding him for mediocre work that the idea that his speeches are less than the Gettysburg Address would never compute.

350 "Did the Sov SAM of this generation have the ability to recognize 1990's civy tech/transponder squawks, or just USSR IFF? Could the killers have been able to ID the aircraft as civy or just see and shoot?"

Complicated question.

The transporter-launcher unit has its own radar.

Normally it works in tandem with several TLs all under networked control of a single command vehicle, and reports are that the command vehicle is the one with the IFF/transponder logic.

But, an individual TL can also downmode to where it can detect and engage targets on its own. This is a cruder mode that would be used to keep the system partly combat-effective if the command vehicle gets taken out or has a systems crash.

This was reportedly one TL operating on its own.

the biggest issue Obama has with competence is that he actually believes he is brilliant.

When you are that arrogant, you never learn and keep making the same mistakes over and over.

Which is what we see Obama doing. He has yet to learn a single lesson while President. Had he that capacity, he might have grown a little in office so as not to be the complete incompetent that he remains.

It doesn't help matters when erstwhile conservatives fall over themselves to declare him or his speeches - none of which has been better than mediocre - "brilliant".

Quick, remember that "brilliant" speech about race he gave during the 2008 campaign? That speech that even people at National Review thought was really good?

Within the next 5 minutes (so as not to give you enough time to do research on the internet to try and come up with an answer):

1. Cite a memorable line from that "brilliant" speech that is a) remembered today and b) will be remembered in 10 years.

2. Summarize the point Obama was making in the speech.

3. cite the new or important ideas that Obama was communicating in that speech.

the reality is it cannot be done, because that speech, like all of Obama's speeches, was nothing but empty platitudes and clichés. there was no big idea. No theme. Nothing to remember.

Amazon is going to take over the world. I went to a space saver store and it was closed. They had a website, 50 hanger $80.

Amazon? 30 hangers $22 and they deliver them free.

Yep- I've been pretty badly hobbled by RA. I still shop, but Amazon is great. I got a Pur water pitcher/filter delivered to my door today. Have a new Woodsman's pal coming to carry in my car. A few odds N' ends and a copy of Elements of Style on order. It's hard to beat for ease of shopping.

359 The SA-11 would not identify transponder signals. It only see the plane on radar. The thought is that the plane resembled a Ukrainian transport like they had shot down the day before. They even bragged about it, until they realized they had fucked up.

Shit happens in war. Remember this fuck up.

A lot of people think Pam Am 103 was a payback for 655's being shot down.

361 "Did the Sov SAM of this generation have the ability to recognize 1990's civy tech/transponder squawks, or just USSR IFF? Could the killers have been able to ID the aircraft as civy or just see and shoot?"

Also: it's tough to figure out what actual technology generation a particular SAM unit belongs to.

The originals are all 1980s vintage Soviet. But there have been some technology insertions and field upgrades applied to Russian-owned units. Better computers, keener radar, more potent motors for the missiles.

The Ukrainians may or may not have performed similar upgrades and that may or may not be with Russian componentry. They have upgraded their tanks with non-Russian parts, for example.

Before the shootdown, the insurgents were on social media boasting that they had several captured SA-11 vehicles, and that they had obtained technicians to work on them.

Whether "work on them" means get them working again, or perform upgrades to modern Russian milspec, is not clear.

362 1. Cite a memorable line from that "brilliant" speech that is a) remembered today and b) will be remembered in 10 years.

"Let me be clear" will be remembered, but it more of a verbal tic than and idea.

365 ...that the separatists would turn over the plane's black boxes (probably after ascertaining there was no evidence on them directly suggesting Russian involvement).

It is unlikely that there would be anything of the sort on them. Plane configuration, operating parameters, and audio recordings. That's about it.

The possibility of a picture having been taken of the missile seconds before impact that shows some sort of telltale marking on the side is zero.

366 Yes, let's threaten Russia with military action...but not really follow through. Or, let's threaten Russia with military action...and follow through, and go to war. Those sound like tremendous ideas. They show American strength! Yay!

368 So you don't want Obama to threaten, but you want it to seem like he's kind of willing to threaten. You want Obama to show American strength by making an empty non-threat, which could potentially be followed by an empty threat? America strong!

How about Obama just refrains from saying something so mealy mouth and inane that it makes America look both stupid and weak?

Is that too much to ask?

Or, do you support incompetent, mealy-mouthed inanity that says nothing but still manages to convey weakness?

Is that what you think is good statesmanship?

I love the defense of Obama - "hey, you can't expect him NOT to say something stupid. that would be asking too much".

when your defense of your guy is that expecting better than idiocy is setting the bar too high, you have a problem.

371 It was not a declared war zone. 400 other planes had flown through the area.

It is on a major Jetway, L480 I think.
Posted by: Nip Sip at July 21, 2014 03:07 PM (0FSuD)

I had read an interview with Chesley Sullenberger describing it thus and pointing out that the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration had barred U.S. Airlines from flying over this area for some time.

376 Hey, he got ripped for not offering any statement. Here's your token statement.

Guys, when we demonstrate that we will refuse to utterly smash goatherders who bomb on New York City, why the hell should Russia care what the American people think? America won't use force, we can't rally European cooperation for sanctions, the UN is veto-blocked. We need Russia to stop arms exports and nuke tech exports to our enemies, we need Russia for manned spaceflight to keep up our own communications network. All they have to do is put up with American blather about rights and wrongs, and what Russian isn't used to that?

377 At this moment, the Leader of the Free World should be talking to Putin like he's (at very least) a naughty schoolboy.

In my day a teacher knew how to make a student cringe in shame.

The new leadership-bureaucracy just can't speak like that any more. You don't always need threats, in fact the overuse of 'consequences' has killed discipline by making it a mere bargaining process, 'If I do this I will get that'. Shame is much more powerful, reaches deep into people.
