Open Thread for Politics 4-19-14 [WeirdDave]

Well, the garden thread was supposed to be a parody sing along themed one, but that went south in a hurry. However, it just so happens I have a song I wrote to the tune of “Bonnie Blue Flag” back when the Tea Party was new, and that one goes great in an OT political thread. Here's the original song if you're not familiar with it, it was almost as popular as “Dixie” in the CSA. From the movie Gods and Generals:

"We are a band of brothers
And native to the soil,
Fighting for the property
We gained by honest toil;
And when our rights were threatened,
The cry rose near and far--
"Hurrah for the Gadsden Flag
Fly proudly from our spar!"

CHORUS: Hurrah! Hurrah!
Individual rights hurrah!
Hurrah for the Gadsden Flag
Fly proudly from our spar.

While the D.C elite,
Were faithful to their trust,
Like friends and like brothers
Both kind were we and just;
But now, when Federal treachery
Attempts our rights to mar,
We hoist on high the Gadsden Flag
Fly proudly from our spar.--CHORUS

First gallant Rick Santelli
cried out from the exchange,
The people followed quickly,
rejecting this new "change".
Alaska's native daughter,
inspired many more
All raised on high the Gadsden Flag
Fly proudly from our spar.--CHORUS

Ye men of valor, gather round
The banner of our fight;
From home to halls of Congress
The statist foe we smite.
We shall oppose the president,
his cronies and his tzars;
Now rally round the Gadsden Flag
Fly proudly from our spar.--CHORUS

And then in old Virginia--
progressives met their fate--
Along with blue New Jersey
showed reforms can not wait;
Impelled by their example,
Now other states prepare
To hoist on high the Gadsden Flag
Fly proudly from our spar.--CHORUS

Then cheer, boys, cheer;
Raise the joyous shout,
The two-ten midterms proved our case
There is no remaining doubt;
And let another rousing cheer
For freedom's light be given,
"Don't tread on me" from the Gadsden Flag
Flies proudly from our spar.--CHORUS

Then here's to our Republic,
Strong are we and brave;
Like patriots of old we'll fight
Our rule of law to save.
And rather than submit to shame,
To die we would prefer;
So cheer for the Gadsden Flag
Fly proudly from our spar.--CHORUS

10 1 Oh lord, you've done it now. I see flame war all day.

Should liven up the day then, no? Besides, I said not one thing about Southern mores. I just like the tune, so I stole it. There's a great scene in The Horse Soldiers where the corps of cadets marches out against John Wayne's Yankee cavalry (playing Bonnie Blue Flag). The Yanks, unwilling to fire on children, retreat. One of them drags a Southern drummer boy up to Wayne "I've captured one sir! What should I do?". Wayne roars "Spank him!".

13 128 from thread below >>But on second thought, why spends tens of thousands fighting an illegal
executive order for a low margin fast food joint? Shut it down and tell
Obama to kiss your ass. Instead of a normal wage they will get zero
wage.

Vic, might as well move the discussion up here. That's what the already announced closed places said in plain English. With many more to come, if they cannot get a waiver.

So what else will happen? Traffic will go way up for going off base to get their fast food fixes, dumping many extra pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere thereby displeasing Gaia. Not to mention the increased costs to military personnel to have to do extra driving. And their kids will now need to be transported off base to find starter jobs, or do without.

And keep in mind they are trying to kill off the commissaries as well.

The genius of the Progressives should leave us all in awe, or something.

If I recall my history correctly MD largely sided with the South and considered itself a southern State. The State legislature was considering a vote for secession and Lincoln had the entire legislature arrested and jailed to prevent that.

32 A survey meant to gauge interest among enlisted women for submarine service is going out to the fleet.

Every enlisted woman in the Navy will receive an invitation to take the voluntary survey, which asks questions about everything from their career aspirations to their opinion on how switching to subs would affect their career.

The survey was sent to reservists March 31 and to active-duty women a day later — more than 57,000 enlisted women, all told.

The task force overseeing the integration of the silent service’s enlisted ranks had received about 8,000 responses as of April 9.

???

The only question should be: Does having women on Subs make us a better fighting Force, Yes or NO. Nothing else matters

The book I read simply said they arrested the legislature. Here is a writeup from the State archives,

True the initial vote failed. But they intended to remeet for more action. Lincoln had the Army arrest the "pro-southern" members of the legislature which was probably a plurality.

67 "The state legislature actually voted down secession."

The legislature voted against secession and voted against re-opening RR links to the North. The state representatives wanted a neutral state, denying the North the ability to stage military operations from Maryland. Lincoln figured enough was enough and crashed the party with fixed bayonets and arrest warrants.

Don't know about fighting union cavalry (or VMI) but Citadel cadets were involved in numerous military actions during the late unpleasantness. That includes the initial action against Fort Sumter.

They have what is known as "battle streamers" as I recall.

Christian congregations in particular have skyrocketed since churches began reopening when Chairman Mao’s death in 1976 signalled the end of the Cultural Revolution.

Less than four decades later, some believe China is now poised to become not just the world’s number one economy but also its most numerous Christian nation.

“By my calculations China is destined to become the largest Christian country in the world very soon,” said Fenggang Yang, a professor of sociology at Purdue University and author of Religion in China: Survival and Revival under Communist Rule.

“It is going to be less than a generation. Not many people are prepared for this dramatic change.”

China’s Protestant community, which had just one million members in 1949, has already overtaken those of countries more commonly associated with an evangelical boom. In 2010 there were more than 58 million Protestants in China compared to 40 million in Brazil and 36 million in South Africa, according to the Pew Research Centre’s Forum on Religion and Public Life.

Prof Yang, a leading expert on religion in China, believes that number will swell to around 160 million by 2025. That would likely put China ahead even of the United States, which had around 159 million Protestants in 2010 but whose congregations are in decline.

By 2030, China’s total Christian population, including Catholics, would exceed 247 million, placing it above Mexico, Brazil and the United States as the largest Christian congregation in the world, he predicted.

“Mao thought he could eliminate religion. He thought he had accomplished this,” Prof Yang said. “It’s ironic – they didn’t. They actually failed completely.”

Top 5 are
US
Brazil
Mexico

Nigeria

Due to population growth Nigeria will rise in coming decades.

Nigeria is 5th most Christian and 6th most Muslim. Which is why I predict Nigeria will not survive as a country and will have to split into two countries along religious lines. Honestly they should do so now and save the bloodshed. The longer they wait to split, the bloodier the civil war will be.

120 In most countries a large minority, and usually a majority, of people are inherently religious. They are seeking something.

For the religious seekers of the world it's increasingly coming down to two choices: Christianity or Islam.

Islam does the best at preventing other religions getting a foothold in territories where it is dominant -- mainly by murdering Christians, Buddhist, Hindus, atheists, etc.

Christianity does the best, by far, at conversions.
Hinduism and Judaism do very poor at conversions since they both are more ethnic religions than universal religions.

Buddhism is somewhat holding it's own, but it has a hard time resisting conversions from Christianity and bullying from Islam.
