FRIDAY!

The incredible, shrinking Charlie Crist campaign.

Some food for thought over at PJMedia, which (amazingly) wasn't prompted by Certain Effin' Doomabee's big mouth, first from Roger Simon: "How Social Conservatives Are Saving Liberalism (Barely)" and then a response from Bryan Preston: "Rebuttal to Another ‘Why Won’t the Social Conservatives Just Shut Up?’ Post."

And a cool bit from a 1934 L.A. Times on the Lizard People who lived under Los Angeles 5,000 years ago.

Another cover below the fold.

Have a great weekend. This week's podcast will be up soon!

The IRS attempting to reverse engineer their persecution and codify it is arguably the most dangerous abuse of power in this regime, and among the most egregious in US history.

They are passing what is, in effect, a Nuremberg-type law that LEGALLY neuters all political opposition.

THIS. IS. DANGEROUS.

13 Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Today’s story isn’t a story, but a joke. And it comes to us courtesy of the writer and raconteur Irvin S. Cobb, who, in the early part of the 20th century, was one of America’s best known humorists. There is a Hollywood connection in that some of his fiction made it to the silver screen – his Judge Priest stories were turned into two movies, both directed by John Ford; a young Cary Grant starred in 1932s The Woman Accused; and Cobb himself wrote intertitles for the silent version of Peck’s Bad Boy.

Here’s the story: it so happened that President Roosevelt (T.R., that is) was touring out West when he ran into one of his old Dakota Indian scouts who had been a Rough Rider in Cuba with him. “Well, how are you, old fellow?” Roosevelt beamed, shaking the scout’s hand and admiring his well-cut suit. “You look just like a white man now!”

“I am, Colonel,”
the scout replied. “My wives and I dress like the white man, we live in a white man’s home and we send our children to the white man’s school. No reservation for us!”

“Well, that’s all well and good, my friend,”
Roosevelt answered with a frown, “but the white man doesn’t have more than one wife. What you have to do is pick one. The others can still be part of your household, but you can only marry one. When you do that, then you’ll be just like the white man.”

The scout thought about that for a moment. Then he took Roosevelt’s hand and shook it solemnly. “I’ll do it, Colonel, if you will do something for me.”

“Anything, old man,”
Roosevelt answered. “What it it?”

“You pick the wife I will live with and go explain it to the other ones.”

Let’s have a little cheesecake now:

Elizabeth Montgomery has been a bad girl and needs a spanking:

Ursula Andress is waiting for you, Mr. Bond:

It's all bad anyways..

I read a piece somewhere yesterday that laid out some pretty good evidence that the Senate races are tied to Barky's approval ratings.

The thing is, though.. will Barky and ValJer think up some "crisis" to build up his ratings before the elections? Or, maybe he doesn't care since he's not up for re-election?

Simon's wrong - gay marriage is not nearly as popular as people thing it is. Mostly, it benefits from the psychology of bullying to shut up its opposition. There's a reason why nearly all the states that have it only have it because of judicial activism.

Frankly,I think that this whole "The SoCons are hurting us!!!!!" nonsense is just an effort by RINOs and "fiscal conservatives" to argue around the fact of their own electoral deficiencies. RINOs always ignore the fact that while the Tea Parties may have the trifecta of Miller, Angle, and O'Donnell to their name, the GOP establishment candidates have taken even more of an electoral beating.

For all the shit the RINOs give the TP about Angle, they conveniently forget that the Searchlight Pederast didn't magically appear from out of nowhere. Rather he beat a series of Repukes since after Paul Laxalt was in office so, unless Angle has perfected time travel, there's a string of RINO carcasses that Reid has dispatched through the years, including, I'm sure, some that Rove thought were perfectly "electable" as part of his permanent Repuke majority.

69 Heard Ted Cruz on Glen Beck's show on my short drive to the gym y'day. Beck was talking about the IRS targeting & persecuting Tea Party groups (not specifically about the proposed rules changes) and saying how nobody has been held accountable & it continues. So Beck says McConnell, McCain & Graham (didn't say Boehner, although he easily could have) appear to be giving tacit approval of IRS actions.

Cruz was fairly blase' saying that GOP "leadership" has merely been "ineffective" on this issue, not in cahoots.

Preston's response if dead-on target. He makes a good point about effectively disenfranchising SoCons, too. I know there are a few head-in-the-sand lunatics here on AoSHQ who think they can win without SoCons, but that simply won't happen. If you don't stand with SoCons to save the culture, then you will be doomed to 30% minorities in elections, here and forever. Something that the more libertarian-minded, "my way or the highway" crowd needs to think about....but probably won't.

If the GOP follows Roger Simon's advice, it will only cement my desire to see the GOP die a quick and spasmodic death. Even if that doesn't happen, if the GOP formalises its dismissal of SoCons, I'm all for splitting the Right vote and letting the Democrats win again and again until the GOP and the liberaltarians figure it out. 90 I think the so-con vs fi-con argument comes down to this: Most people don't give a shit about a lot of the so-con issues, or the liberal social issues either.

Every poll that asks people what issues are important to them leads with the economy, jobs, etc.

So, just as gay marriage is not important to most voters, neither is abortion.

We need to make 2014 about failed Obama policies.. hammer Obamacare as the next show drops on employer plans. Lay the lost jobs at Obama's door and every Democrat who voted for O'Care and any of his other policies.

We need a wave election again, because 2016 doesn't have anywhere near the potential for gain as does 2014.

Then we can go after the White House in 2016.

And I read an article last week that suggested Mike Pence might make a great dark horse candidate.. I could live with that!

I would like abortion banned. I realize, however, it can't be done. It should, however, be treated as the serious, life-ending procedure that it is. And if that makes people uncomfortable, I'm sorry. I consider it murder and, while I will never have the electoral power to make it illegal, I will certainly do all I can to discourage it from occurring within the bounds of the present law and within the spirit of civil disobedience.

The law use to be that you had to have two conviction or one conviction for a crime of moral turpitude and they carried a combined 1 year sentence. So one misdemeanor for a crime of moral turpitude won't get you deported. Two will or 1 crime which carries a one year sentence.

But, they haven't enforced the law in years.

Not sure where you're located, but builders work with HVAC people to determine the heating and cooling needs based on some theoretical low temperature for an area. They calculate BTU's of heating required for the space, at X temperature. We're hitting lows that heating systems were not designed to heat.

You are probably also in another area that is like 20 degrees below average, with no end in sight this month. Ask your employer if you can bring in a space heater for a while. For the children productivity.

Simply hold on tightly to the hand of His divine Providence and he will help you in all events, and when you are unable to walk he will lead you.

The Social vs. Fiscal conservative is a false battle, IMO.

Both are intertwined to the extent that conservatism as a whole is a way of life. Statism can only triumph when they can kill G-d and replace it with the State. Because only the latter can confer "rights" on you as part of the mass, not as an individual.

And the one element that stands in the way of this is the nuclear family, which has been under more or less constant assault for 50 years.

I have nothing against homosexuals, or pre-marital sex or contraception (not abortion). My beef is these groups seeking not justice or fairness but RETRIBUTION and dominance.

And they are weapons against the family and therefore major agents of the left.

This is why social issues matter to me. Because when you cede these and allow the left to paint you as bigoted, you open the door for them to conquer us on every other front.

You sure as hell didn't see it in that wonderful budget deal that Ryan negotiated. Nor did you see it in 2001-2006 when the Repukes controlled everything and spent money so fucking fast that the JEF had to try hard to outdo it. How anybody that wants fiscal restraint doesn't want Rove hung by the neck rather than being in a position of responsibility is a mystery to me.

Either the Republican Party wants a social conservative wing, or it's time for a divorce. The fact that the social conservatives haven't ALREADY walked away is a testament to their (our) loyalty, and a consistent application of principles to behaviors.

As for Ace, it's clear he has "issues" related to sex and politics. I'd suggest he find a way to work those out, but apparently that's what he does when he descends into the comments and starts these wars on his own blog.

Unfortunately, the hard-liners on both sides of social issues forget a few basics and thus alienate people who would otherwise be on their sides.

The worst failing is a tendency to demand a kind of moral absolutism that casts all unbelievers into Outer Darkness. I agree with a majority of SoCon stands, but do not see them as central political issues. No matter what the subject, warning sirens go off when I'm told that the government should be the enforcer, or indeed have any part in the issue.

Some True Conservatives make this mistake. They claim to want less government, but they want said government to control the use of drugs, buttsecks or what women do with their bodies.

I don't. Either way. Politicians do not and should not have the authority to control moral issues. On either side.

172 Every fringe social conservative, or every errant word by one, becomes the definition of social conservatism, and, by extension, conservatism and the GOP.

However, the PIV loon, or the Patriarchy of Milk professor, or NAMBLA, or ELF, or CPUSA, never become the definition of leftism.

Why? Because the Left is the media, and the media control the debate and the Narrative. This was relevant yesterday about Nugent's remarks-- comparing him to Jeremiah Wright was meaningless, because Wright was supressed but Nugent would be elevated.

It's not a level playing field. It won't be for the foreseeable future. And itsnot that the SoCons are a greater liability than much of the Left, it's that the People Who Define will make it so.

Some old man went with some younger people to Ars-not because he was religious-but because pilgrims were going there all the time and he tagged along to see what the fuss was . He didn't want to go to confession and was hiding in the back of the crowd. Vianney looked over the crowd and asked the man to come forward. He came forward took the man's hand and said: "It is a long time when you were at confession." The man replied. "Monsieur, It's been thirty years I believe.".
"Thirty years, my friend? said Vianney. "It's been thirty three years and you were at such a place."
"You are correct" replied the man. "Well, then said
Vianney, "We are going to confession now, are we not?" And so they did.

Exactly. George Stephiwhatshisname thought he was being slick and clever to throw that contraceptives question into one of the Republican debates, and it pretty much got brushed aside, but the left was all aflutter with it. Thinking they HAD those rotten Republicans, with their God-bothering, and bedroom snooping.

It was a non-issue. Except to the left. And people on "our" side who are very uncomfortable with having social conservatives in their tent.

Sine 2004.

I doubt it was Ace's intent to form a religious blog. Yet, it is a constant topic. He regularly posts when religion is being attacked by the donks. He allows the comments to be filled with people talking about religion, debating religions, the praying, the prayer banks, etc. But. god forbid that he disagrees with the socons on his own blog.

Those who think Ace is a horrible hostile person should start their own blogs.

FWIW, I don't believe for an instant that Ace is "hostile to faith". I do very much believe that faith and religion were never part of his upbringing or his family to any great degree beyond childhood exposure.

So its not that he hates your prayers or your faith, but going to church and praying publicly are just things not done, not forbidden just not done.

There may be additional beliefs he holds that stops him from attending or believing, but that's the beginning.

Now to give those positions up, I expect something in return. You want gay marriage, great we want an end to marriage penalty baked into the tax code. You want pot, we get a secure border,

Oh we all have space heaters and mine is currently like less than a foot away from me. It only helps to a point.

49 when I walked in.

The problem is that our office is in a stunning old Victorian house that is 130+ years old. The HVAC has been upgraded but at a certain point it just can't keep up. Then the furnace broke again on Wednesday and it needs a part so I'm not entirely certain there's any heat on at all right now.

I am now going to do something I swore I wouldn't but I am going to defend ace's interpretation of what Huckabee said. For all those of you who are up in arms at the very very thought that any Christian would ever take the position that sex is for procreative purposes only, well, welcome to the Evangelical community in which I was raised. I was taught by my church and my religious school that sex is for procreation and that, yes, it's fun and awesome but that is secondary. The point of sex is to have children. Birth control, any kind of birth control, yes, I'm including NFP and condoms in that, was incredibly controversial. If you did not want to have children, you were to abstain entirely. I am speaking of married couples in that because non-married couples were not to have sex at all and that includes masturbation.

When I read Huckabee's comment about controlling libido, I interpreted it *exactly* as ace did because that is what I heard growing up. Birth control is nothing more than a way to allow women to use sex as a means to trap men without the consequences of babies. Oh, wait, did I say sex? Because it was never sex. No, no, no, it was immoral relations or promiscuity or intercourse but never the word sex. I was very nearly expelled when I asked during a health class why if sex was fine in marriage then the word sex could never be uttered by anyone ever. Needless to say, that class was separated by sex, can't have the boys and the girls in the same room when discussing the sins of the flesh you know.

So, yeah, I understand very deeply indeed why ace interpreted it like that. After all, that's exactly how I understood it.

I'm sorry, but all those of you acting like ace has no support for his position? You are wrong.

235 All of those "coincidences" mentioned on the ONT - the IRS, FEC prosecutions - reminded me of a Richard Fernandez column back when all of the NSA shenanigans came to light:

"The fact that you belong to a large group, for example the 50% of the
US population that is conservative or Republican, does not give you
safety in numbers. Within this large group of millions are a much
smaller number of key leadership nodes. They are the nodes that matter,
the top of the hierarchy mandated by Dunbar’s Number.

If you can control, corrupt or even bait those nodes you can reduce
the entire group to impotence. You can effectively decapitate it, a
strategy applied not only to al-Qaeda but apparently also by the IRS in
its hunt of Tea Party and Republican fundraising groups....You don’t have to
clobber all Muslims and Republicans. You just have to clobber the key
nodes and the rest will mill around like leaderless ants."http://preview.tinyurl.com/lr5bvzf

I offer the following rebuttal points:

1) Mike Huckadoodle has NO power, further he is loathed by as many Christians as he attracts.

2) I must need severe reading comprehension, yes you can take those words and come up with the meaning being imputed, but a fair contextual reading was mocking the notion that the government HAD to intervene or else the female public is ill-served.

You have no idea how dirty defending the fat asshole makes me feel.

Alex, it is all good. Message received, do NOT express any opinions on any social issues, and do not DARE take issue with public schools sexualizing 6-9 year olds.

259 I don't think anyone thinks Ace is a horrible person or they wouldn't be here. I for one admire him for his great writing and courageousness being in the battle. When I say this I sometimes get pooh-poohed by people here, but given the climate of the country it takes courage to express conservative views day after day. I don't think's he's hostile to religion. or the expression of it If he were I would have been banned long before this. :^) He just doesn't agree with many social views-although even he said 5 million abortions since Roe v. Wade (or whatever the number was gave him something to think about-(paraphase) As a person noted, you can't reason someone out of view they weren't reasoned into. He is an exceptionally bright man who talks about faith as Agnostics often do-and it's no discredit to them-as an intellectual thing. He cannot relate to it because he does not "feel" it. It's not a relationship. It's all about what Jesus the great moral teacher said, not what he does in us. The second experience is a gift of grace.

And yes, we attack each other too much and I was engaging in a bit of that yesterday so I apologize, although I do not describe myself as a social con and never have. I describe myself as person who believes in Christ and tries to be faithful and often fails miserably.

268 So, yeah, I understand very deeply indeed why ace interpreted it like that. After all, that's exactly how I understood it.

Except the fact still exists that Huck was projecting those thoughts as coming from the Democrats/Big Government Types. The 'libido' sentence was incredibly poorly written. But guaranteed to get attention, which may have been Hucks intent.

Posted by: --- at January 24, 2014 08:38 AM (MMC8r)

270 AtC, what you're saying is that Ace took the view of, sorry 'bout this, a tiny minority of American Christianity, and then tarred every nook and cranny of American Christianity with that same brush.

Not exactly a Great Moment in Conservative Debate®
Posted by: Sean Bannion at January 24, 2014 08:31 AM (MPIX5)

I said I was defending ace's interpretation, not any further actions he took thereupon.

That being said, those of you going off that ace was way out of line and utterly misinterpreting what was said are ignoring that there are subsets of Christianity, of which Huckabee is a part, for which what he said carries a great deal of weight behind it.

Again, which isn't to say that ensuing events unfolded well for anyone. I am merely stating that I understand from whence ace obtained his interpretation.

That's an idiotic argument. My public SCHOOL separated everyone by gender when "health" class came around.

272 I was taught by my church and my religious school that sex is for procreation

I hate to mention this, but that is actually what it is for. It's not some self-actualization exercise with the possible consequence of a baby. If we couldn't procreate, there would be no orgasms.

If anything, we've gone too far in the opposite direction, to where sex is this odd sacrament to pleasure and making babies is a separate concept. It really and truly is about both things.

273 I'm sorry, but all those of you acting like ace has no support for his position? You are wrong.

Granted. But Ace, as he often does when he gets this hair up, then wanted to tar everyone who comments on the blog and is remotely religious with that same position. Even in the face of "I really didn't need to know that" level disclosure from a lot of the commenters.

I think the real problem is that he ain't making pancakes for anyone lately.

No one was saying she couldn't fuck the whole 82nd Airborne. We were saying other people--particularly the (formerly) Catholic institution she was enrolled in--shouldn't be forced to pay for her pills and shots and abortions because she felt she shouldn't have to cover any expenses that arise from her "lifestyle choices."

And that's got nothing to do with "don't want people to have sex." Stripping the wages of Person C because Person A wants to give free shit to Person B to limits the ability to C to pay their own way through life and move ahead in the world, essentially depriving C of their right to life/liberty/pursuit of happiness.

But no, let's beat the shit out of C for not wanting B to have fun.

I don't know...depends on how you think of it. My guess is their reasoning was "it'll be easier to teach this if the boys and girls aren't distracted by each other."

Which is a polite was of saying the same thing as "tempted to sin".

BINGO!

That's when I left that thread. When I saw that no matter how much I said that I wasn't saying what he was saying I was saying, he still insisted that that's what I was saying. Can't argue that set of conditions.

I think that if I had renounced all religion on the spot, he still would've told me that okay but you still think that way. He would not let go his preconceived notion of what I was saying.

I take full responsibility for being unable to counter that claim. He may well somehow be correct but I don't have the skills to convince him otherwise even though that's what I feel is correct.

Oh. Well. I'm pretty stubborn and it's a testament to my respect for Ace that I quit arguing even though I felt wronged and misunderstood and saw him doing it to others.

I usually can't resist an argument under those conditions.

I'm sorry about the heating situation at your work. I live in old drafty house where to save money we try to keep the heat at 62 most of time, so I'm often writing work stuff on the couch, shivering under two blankets. Old homes can be lovely-I wouldn't call my house exactly lovely. It's an ramsahckle home for the 1850s, but is IS home. :^) I have worked in old buildings where the heat was terrible. Straight man gets fucked by lesbians

TOPEKA — A man who provided sperm to a lesbian couple in response to an online ad is the father of a child born to one of the women and must pay child support, a Kansas judge ruled Wednesday.

Topeka resident William Marotta had argued that he had waived his parental rights and didn’t intend to be a father.

Shawnee County District Judge Mary Mattivi rejected that claim, saying the parties didn’t involve a licensed physician in the artificial insemination process and thus Marotta didn’t qualify as a sperm donor, The Topeka Capital-Journal reported.

“In this case, quite simply, the parties failed to perform to statutory requirement of the Kansas Parentage Act in not enlisting a licensed physician at some point in the artificial insemination process, and the parties’ self-designation of (Marotta) as a sperm donor is insufficient to relieve (Marotta) of parental right and responsibilities to the child,” Mattivi wrote.

198
FWIW, I don't believe for an instant that Ace is "hostile to faith".

neither do I. If he were, he'd be frothing at the mouth about it like my daughter. *sigh* He seems to be very much worried that it's the so-cons who are destroying electoral chances.
I remember my father, who was for his time a weirdo - a Mick from the Irish ghettoes in Manhattan who voted for Nixon over Kennedy (which got him ostracized from his family), an avid reader of National Review (we had those mags everywhere in our house), and who ranted against Johnson, Medicare, and Medicaid, and the decline of the culture.

I remember him being despondent after the Goldwater debacle, worried that the Dems had presidential elections sewn up into the foreseeable future because ofthe lopsided Johnson victory. The only bright spots he could see on the horizon were the young conservative bucks like him at the 1964 GOP convention and an actor named Reagan who gave an inspiring speech there.

If you heard Dad today, many would have pegged him as a so-con. And I guesshe was, in many respects, other than he heavily distrusted most politicians.
but he was a fiscal conservative (a CPA who heavilyreined in spending at the non-profit hospital he worked for), a military hawk (Army guy), and a devout Catholic (not a fake one like Pelosi, Biden, and the Secretariat of State) who was vehemently anti-abortion.

I believe many Americans out there are like him, even today.

Dad really believed Reagan could pull the country together behind the beliefshe espoused all his life.

And of course Reagan found a way to galvanize the so-cons, the fi-cons, the hawks AND blue-collar Democrats into 2 huge electoral victories.

Why couldn't wedo the same? Because we are so balkanized and pointing fingers so much we can't find and get behind someone early enough to fight through the BS?

What we're missing is a leader who appeals to all of these factions in some manner.

Dad was a big Sarah Palin fan until the day he died. He believed she was Reagan in a skirt. Although I disagree with him on that because she is too shrill and has been too heavily damaged.

I had heard that Ted Cruz is going around quietly and privately, appealing to conservative leaders about uniting behind candidates for the midterms and for 2016,not making a splash about it. Whether it's true or not . . . and if it is true, if it's for him or other candidates, who knows?

But if the MFM and GOP so-called leaders and their toadies are making it plain who they are backing, why can't we? Why do we have to have so many "conservative" candidates in the primaries that they split the traditionalist votes and give the wins to the one moderate candidate in the race, who always happens to be the GOP the MFM backs - until the primary race is over? When will we learn?

+1 Bannion

The big issue I had with the thread yesterday, which is why I bothered to comment on it, was that yeah there may be some extreme communities of Christians that think like what AtC describes, but it's not the norm. Not by a long shot. And our host was behaving as if that was what all believing Christians think about sex. Which is so profoundly incorrect. And which is also why the vast majority of us didn't read Dorkabee's statement that way.

And being told over and over again that I can't control myself and have a healthy sex life was insulting.

399 What really amazes me is how diverse and fragile the coalition of the Left really is. Just an extensive collection of identity groups, each out for their cut of a finite pile of money. The Right on the other hand is basically made up of those holding socially or financially conservative ideologies with large overlap between the two. We could spend our time pushing wedge issues meant to fracture the Left, but far too many on our side seem happy to assist the Left and push the wedges into the Right. I just can't see the winning strategy behind this.

410 I know exactly where that is. I used to take that to visit my husband when he was working at (what used to be) the Hummer dealership on William Tate and I wanted to avoid the freeways.

I've been trying to be fairly careful not to explicitly state who my employer is (people can probably piece it together from clues). I'm sure they have social media folks going all over the place, and I'm further pretty sure they don't want any hint of my opinion representing them.

415 "I'm pretty stubborn and it's a testament to my respect for Ace that I quit arguing even though I felt wronged and misunderstood and saw him doing it to others."

He probably just wishes a lot of you were smarter.

Only a small percentage of people follow politics. Of that small percentage, a tiny sliver follow it to the point that they spend their days on a political blog. These are the cream, the elite, the people who should know not only the details but the big picture.

Ace's point was inarguable. It doesn't matter what Huckabee said. His actual words didn't matter. The only thing that counted was that a known SoCon said the words "women" and "libido".

That was enough to set off the alarm bells in the 95% of the population that have actual lives and don't live and breath this stuff daily. Sure, if we owned the media and had the time to go around to each and every potential voter and explain exactly what he said and meant, it may be helpful, but that's not reality.

As AoSHQ regulars, we should be smart enough to realize this. It doesn't matter if we agree with Huckabee or not. It doesn't matter if you're a woman who is devoutly religious and can suck dick like a pro. It's the perception by the voting public that SoCons want to interject their morality on everyone.

This hurts us. It's not fair. It's not right. But that's the way it is.

You are 100% wrong. Ace himself admitted that he had a problem with what Huckabee said. What started as a "Wow, can you believe the media" post became a "Dude, you SoCons should shut up" post.

Had he continued to argue "Look, SoCons should be smarter than using the words 'women' and 'libido' in the same sentence," it wouldn't have gotten so nasty. (We still would have disagreed, but it would have been much more cordial) He didn't. He began asserting that what Huckabee had said was wrong on its own.

456 FWIW, a commentary on sex in the Old Testament

The Song begins: "The song of songs, which is Solomon's. Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine." If the point here was supposed to be that the Church wants to merge itself with the love of Christ the Savior, there would have been considerably less distracting ways of saying it. No — the Song of Solomon is a love poem, and the love is a very corporeal one. That it made it into the foundational book of Christianity is a mystery beyond my comprehension. But, like the Psalms, here is a part of the Bible that can be read purely for the love of its poetry.

I'm touched all the more by the Song for the occasional odd chord it strikes. Such compliments as "thy neck is like the tower David builded for an armory" or "they hair is as a flock of goats, that appear from mount Gilead" have perhaps lost some of their charm in the last few thousand years (a modern adaptation might be: thy hair is like dark-suited businessmen, leaping out of skyscrapers on Black Monday). And there are moments that seem downright overdone: "My beloved put in his hand by the hole of the door, and my bowels were moved for him."

For the most part, though, the poem's imagery is most pleasantly evocative. A few highlights: the lover says that her beloved "feeds among the lilies" and that her hands,
when she rises up to him, are "dropped with myrrh." And Solomon, meanwhile, says to her, "Thy lips, O my spouse, drop as honeycomb: honey and milk are under thy tongue." And she back to him: "Blow on my garden, that the spices thereof may flow out. Let my beloved come into his garden, and eat the pleasant fruits." Heart be stilled!

Note: I'm not saying it's *bad* I quite enjoy his "Ok, follow that logical progression" bit. I'm saying it's too slow moving to be of interest to your average voter, and to logical to convince a libtard.

He's probably more where he needs to be now anyway.

476 A lot of the "smart people losing their shit" has to do with a lack of a shared vocabulary. When it comes to Religion, arguing about what is a "shall never do" and what is a "must do" in various faiths is about as far as things around here get. The very shallowest approach possible. It's not going to change, there are worlds of information about Christianity out there, legions of interpretations and translations of the Word, etc., but we're not all going to get caught up at once, or ever. Good bit of advice, if someone is telling you that something is from YOUR religious tradition, and you know otherwise, walk away.

494 I actually heard the famous Huckabee quote on NPR this morning, and it even sounds worse than it reads. He's trying way too hard to be clever, to out-position his perceived opponents, and it just comes off as being unserious and even artificial.

Huckabee is the wrong messenger, but that doesn't mean the so-con message is wrong. It means we need a better messenger than Huckabee/Santorum.

So-con is the position of Aristotle. It has plenty of heft. But it needs someone with heft to articulate it in a way that's not culturally tone-deaf. Thomas Aquinas was able to do this. So were Kant/Hegel. Huckabee--not so much.

Preston "got the best of the argument" with Simon in this sense: the fi-cons cannot win without the so-cons. Jettison the so-cons if you like; you will make yourself a permanent minority.

That's not speculation; it's political fact.

500 Oral Roberts (big prophets)

HBD, O.R.

Grew up watching him on TV... while looking for cartoons or something funny. A faith healer with the skills of PT Barnum or Cal Worthington.

By my HS Soph year, my folks divorced, remarried, and I got moved to Tulsa, less than two miles from ORU.

One day in our high school Sunday class, we had Rev Roberts as a guest. Long, long ago. What we talked about I have long since forgotten. Mostly I recall being impressed how that tent-revival TV huckster, offstage, was a quiet, well-spoken theologian and man of faith.

He really did facilitate healing, beginning when he was a young man. There are lots of fake faith healers, and certainly not every "cure" OR helped with was necessarily complete or lasting, but he brought faith, and hope, and freedom from fear and misery, and that's were healing most matters.

I deem, for all else, Oral Roberts was sincere, and never forgot whence healing comes.

The message of faith can use some good, honest salesmanship. If it requires a little carnival barking, that's the rubes for you.

Apparently I missed a hell of a fight last night...

Look, the GOP needs to make a decision. Which are more valuable: the so-con votes or the fi-con votes? The Venn Diagram which shows them both continues to more further and further apart.

I'm a pretty rabid fi-con (even if I am a government employee) and only disagree by a matter of degrees on a few so-con issues. I'm not sure what label should be applied to me relative to my belief system, but I do know that harping only on fiscal issues is a loser. Evidence: Mitt Romney and pretty much every (R) candidate for the last 20 years.

The thing is though, harping only on social issues is a loser too. Hell, so-cons can't even get out of our own primaries. If you can't win over a majority of republicans, how on earth can you expect to win over a majority of voters as a whole?

516 EVERYONE considers themselves a fiscal conservative. It's just a question of what programs you think are necessary, which is where the parties differ. i.e. the vast majority of fiscally conservative Republicans aren't looking to abolish Social Security or Medicare.

deficit reduction isn't exactly something a winning coalition's built on, especially if it gets more under control and the more hysterical projections are never realized. Now this doesn't mean the standard social conservative issues should be what the GOP's built around, but "fiscal conservatism" is not a core ideology, and is not going to motivate people on the level of more gut issues.

519 I had a tl;dr post and my take on the issues, but fuck it. It's too long even for me.

I will say this, though: has anyone been to a pub in the UK? I mean a REAL pub, of questionable sanitation, packed wall-to-wall with locals? You remember how a lot of those locals are family and lifelong mates? Do you remember the very LOUD arguments, which sometimes even came to blows? And yet, how next week they'd be back carrying on and slapping each other on the back like the previous week had never happened?

Yeah, the HQ is kinda like that, IMO. I don't really mind the "violence" because that's pretty much the sign of a genuine tight-knit community. A genuine community of friends does NOT coddle each other for the sake of "going along to get along". (Leftists usually object here with a "MY circle of friends never fights like that!" Oh honey, that's because you leftists don't really *have* any actual friends, just a mutual asspatting circlejerk)

So think of this as a pub, where we can yell and scream at each other, make up later, and the people in any position to do anything about our issues remain blissfully ignorant of whatever arguments we were having in the first place.

520 I would like abortion banned. I realize, however, it
can't be done. It should, however, be treated as the serious,
life-ending procedure that it is. And if that makes people
uncomfortable, I'm sorry. I consider it murder and, while I will never
have the electoral power to make it illegal, I will certainly do all I
can to discourage it from occurring within the bounds of the present law and within the spirit of civil disobedience.

Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing
-------------------------------------------------------------------

But here's what I don't understand. You're obviously very rational in that you understand you're never going to outlaw abortion. So what is the point of losing elections over and over again trying to outlaw something you know is never going to happen? Isn't that the definition of insanity?

Does the "pro-life" label now mean it's simply a statement of faith? Pro-life used to mean politically, they wanted to outlaw most abortions. Is it now just about politicians wearing the hat of moral crusader and being a part-time preacher?

I think social conservatives/religion has actually"won" the battle of hearts, even people with almost zero religious convictions don't look at getting an abortion the same way they look at getting a cavity drilled.

My problem with social conservatism is not the specific morality issues they are addressing, I happen to agree almost 100% with them, it's the fact there's no legislative solution and the end result seems to be pushing the US into full blown socialism.

We lost the 2012 election over social issues, period. Obama and Democrats did everything they could to talk about abortion, birth control, and homosexuality, and our side had bat shit crazy responses.

521 Interesting debate - sorta - at PJ on this issue.

Except, if you're honest, there's only one side resorting to caricatures.

The left is going to DESTROY western civilization because all they want is to redefine marriage and destroy the institution and attack families.

Yeah, ok. SOME of the hardcore gay activists are about the bitter destruction of "marriage". The VAST majority are not, especially the younger generations. If you want to argue that they are being duped along with 90% of gay marriage supporters, great. But to say the answer is to oppose gay marriage, frankly, you're wrong and just supporting Roger Simon's position along the way.

I get that social conservatives want to save American Culture and whatnot. But the problem is, contrary to what Preston claims, SoCons are NOT only on the defensive. That's an outright lie. Regardless, "saving the culture" WILL NOT occur through the government. That is a fact of life. There simply is no governmental solution to the erosion of our culture. Again, if you're honest, the social conservatives that Roger Simon is addressing would absolutely ban abortion and gay marriage. Via ? Yes, government action.

To pretend that wing of the Republican base does not exist is simply not true.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So you're saying that one media caricature of Romney held sway over the voting public, but the other didn't ?
Bullshit. Romney as out of touch rich guy was no more accurate or resonating with the public than Romney as leader of the war on women and gays. And, frankly, based on the people I know that voted for Obama, the war on women and gays was FAR more effective.
Nobody I heard from said "Romney, that rich guy just doesn't get me.". I did hear from people who wanted to make sure their daughter could still make her own decisions about her body and gays that want gay marriage legalized - and Romney's opposition to it was on his website.
Pretending that Todd Akin was the beginning and end of the fake war on women meme is, again, not accurate. They lit that fire long before Akin, but Akin and those like him are just gasoline for their fire. I don't know how you put out the fire, but you sure as fuck can't keep pouring gasoline on it and hoping it will magically go out.
