Up To 80 Million Could Lose Their Health Insurance Plans

Had this in the link dump, but it is worth another look.

Almost 80 million people with employer health plans could find their coverage canceled because they are not compliant with ObamaCare, several experts predicted.

Their losses would be in addition to the millions who found their individual coverage cancelled for the same reason.

Stan Veuger of the American Enterprise Institute said that in addition to the individual cancellations, “at least half the people on employer plans would by 2014 start losing plans as well.” There are approximately 157 million employer health care policy holders.

Avik Roy of the Manhattan Institute added, “the administration estimated that approximately 78 million Americans with employer sponsored insurance would lose their existing coverage due to the Affordable Care Act.”

Remember that part in bold. Next fall you'll hear the White House and Democrats claim they didn't know. The White House is claiming only five percent of Americans are affected by the Individual Mandate. That may be true today, but wait until next year when employers begin rescinding their health insurance coverage and dumping employees on the exchange.

It's already happening with small businesses. (autoplay video).

Be sure to bring this up at your Thanksgiving meal.

Update:

One of the reasons your plan is getting cancelled? It doesn't cover acupuncture. Yeah. Acupuncture.

The reason behind the losses is that current plans don't meet the requirements of ObamaCare, which dictate that each plan must cover a list of essential benefits, whether people want them or not.

"Things like maternity care or acupuncture or extensive drug coverage," said Veuger. "And so now the law is going to force them to buy policies that they could have gotten in the past if they wanted to but they chose not to."

Thanks to Comrade Arthur for pointing that out.

1 Here's my question: Are these 80 million estimated to lose their coverage merely the policy holders? Because what about dependents and other family members on those same policies? Are they included in that number? If not, you can double it. Triple it to be safe.

2 Yeah, I've been wondering what they're going to say when this hits. I don't think "when we said it affects only 5% of the population, we weren't talking about the effect of the employer mandate and the media didn't ask us about that."

They knew and they lied.

10 repost from the other thread:

Interesting thing about "cadillac" plans. It's a fringe benefit. But it
only has value if you need medical care. If you are healthy it doesn't
really help you. So, under Obamacare, if you are healthy, you are going
to be taxed for a benefit that gives you nothing.

Perhaps they
should tax the real benefits of the sickly? Oh yeah, that would be
popular. You need chemo and radiation therapy to fight the cancer and
the IRS wants a cut from that benefit.

She stammered for a minute, then sheepishly replied, "We just don't know yet." About half the room got up and left at that point.

24 Here are the issues as I see them:

The coverage plans currently being offered by an employer do not meet the minimum requirements of the ACA. Therefore they'll need to be replaced. It is fair to assume that the replacement plans, like those on the individual market are learning, are much, much more expensive than their old plans.

That being the case, most businesses will have a small list of choices to make:
1. Cancel their plans and let their employees buy insurance on the exchange.
2. Cancel their plans and let their employees buy insurance on the exchange and give them some small subsidy to help cover the costs
3. Simply eat the costs of the new and more expensive plans.
4. Take the new plans, but increase the contribution amount for the employee.

As someone who works in business, I can all but guarnatee that most small and medium sized businesses will choose option 1 and 2. The new plans will simply be too expensive for companies too cover. I'm not sure what the big businesses will do.

Keep in mind, this was the plan all along. The government wants as many people on the individual exchange as they can get.

Had a conversation with a guy recently, a sensible, smart, conservative guy. An attorney, but don't hold that against him. Anyway, his insurance premium is going to almost double, and he doesn't yet know what his benefits will be. He's rejoicing, because he's "keeping his plan" for another year.

When I try to explain that if he hasn't checked, how does he know his deductibles aren't doubling, his out-of-pocket costs going through the roof, he's rather dismissive about all that.

I don't know why. I think it's denial. We're not going to convince people based on these projections. You can keep saying millions of Americans are going to lose coverage, or significantly reduced benefits, I swear people can't really wrap their heads around it. They won't see it until it's already happening. To them.

I guess it's just human nature, and the Dems were banking on that.

Even the very few Dems we've got in my unit are worried that this is the union end game. This is a state-level Medicaid Estate Recovery, where states can recoup their expenses for Medicaid users age 55 and older. It's been in place since 1993, however, it is Obamacare that is *forcing* so many people into Medicaid via the website.

Notice how people who have low current income are automatically enrolled regardless of their assets - they are not given the option to purchase through the site? The states will get their hands on those assets.

I think of it like appendicitis. If left untreated it gets more and more painful. If you wait too long it will burst and kill the patient. If it bursts on its own the patient may feel a temporary relief as the pressure is reduced, but if they aren't treated quickly all those toxins floating around in their body will kill them.

404Care is an inflamed appendix. It's causing great pain to many, many people in this country, and will cause greater pain to even more people the longer it's allowed to remain. Sure, we can let nature take its course and wait until we have some kind of veto proof majority in both houses (whenever that may be); but that will be too late. By that time all a repeal will do is release the pressure, like a burst appendix. All the worst parts of the law will still be floating around out there like an infection. We'll be lucky to live through it.

If the Dems decided to try to save themselves tomorrow and congress
passed a repeal bill and then overwrote a presidential veto Obamacare
would still be a crippling mess for years. Just one aspect: -- folks
with preexisting conditions who had maintained coverage until this
clustercufk canceled their policies and they couldn't buy a new one.

Posted by: PaleRider

I've been thinking about this, because I've concluded that there is no way the Dems can leave this law on the books. How exactly do you win an election after screwing most of the country by tossing them off their health insurance and offering them a more expensive, inferior product? No, OCare as it is now constituted will be an ex-parrot within 2 years. However.

They've clearly moved the proverbial Overton window. I think it is now assumed that the government will expand Medicaid to include preexisting conditions. I'd also guess that they'll pass a law (with GOP help) that nobody will have to spend more than X percent of their income on medical bills. IOW, partially socialized medicine. It's still bad policy, but it'll be better than the CF Barry has engineered.

139 More details at PJ Media (h/t Neo Neocon) regarding how Obamacare amped up Medicaid:

"The Affordable Care Act eliminates Medicaid’s asset test, and creates the roach motel of government
welfare programs. Medicaid is no longer an “entitlement” you can choose
to access. Instead, as Nicole Hopkins’ mother found out earlier this
month, if you qualify under its new, lenient rules, HealthCare.gov forces your enrollment...

There are no other options. This — not President Barack Obama’s “if
you like your plan-doctor-provider, you can keep your
plan-doctor-provider” — is how HealthCare.gov has been designed to work...

If you really think this is entirely the result of government
incompetence, and that this man’s family can enjoy Uncle Sam’s largesse
without financial worry, you haven’t heard of Medicaid’s Estate Recovery
Act, a measure which requires states to claw back money spent by
Medicaid from available assets in deceased beneficiaries’ estates.http://preview.tinyurl.com/q3ykaf9

You didn't need to read the bill the entire bill to know this was going to happen. It was obvious.

Once it was revealed that the head of HHS, in this case Obama/Sebelius/Pelosi/Reid, had the power to define exactly what had to be covered in a health insurance plan the game was over.

Basic math skillz are important, too. There was no way in the world 30 (really more like 45) million people could be added to the free shit roles without substantial raises to everyone else's policy along with forcing youngins to buy insurance.

What's funny to me is that liberal senators and reps are completely boned. They either have to admit they were too stupid to understand how insurance works or they just didn't give a damn. Pick one of those to run on. Should work out just fine.

175 One thing I wonder about is this: The new plans require everyone to have certain benefits, like maternity care and pediatric dental care. As a single, childless male, I need neither. When pricing private plans, I had to check a box to indicate whether or not I had pediatric dental coverage. I priced both with and without, and the price was identical, so the insurance company is pricing the premium for that unneeded benefit at $0. I wonder if they are doing the same for male maternity coverage?

SFGoth - The Obamacare site is *forcing* people onto Medicaid if they qualify (based on current salary, regardless of net worth). That's what's so treacherous: these people *don't want* the handout, they're not looking for a free lunch, they're just trying to purchase a plan through the site. And then if they use Medicaid their assets are fair game for any expenses they incur from age 55+.

I object to this assessment. Medical care is unreasonably excessive in cost.

It has long since ceased to be a free market system, and has long been modified by immoral distortions, not the least of which are the perverse incentives created by people NOT PAYING THEIR OWN DAMN BILLS.

There is no reformatory pressure applied to the Medical care costs.

When Medical care costs as much as a house, there is something damn wrong with the system anyway.

245 Here in NJ we still have the private market, so going to the exchanges isn't the only option for either individuals or employers. Blue NJ already forced insurance companies to cover many of the things Obamacare now mandates, so the increases aren't as drastic as I'm hearing from other states. Blue Cross has a choice of a bronze plan at $650/month, two silvers at $750/month, and a gold at $850/month, all with their usual networks (as far as I know). My current plan would cost $809/month to renew, so I may just say fuck it and buy the gold plan with better coverage. Going without isn't an option for me.

I'm envious of those people complaining that insurance is now going to cost them $300/month. Even going back 20 years, I've never seen a plan that low.

Yea, no. If they coulda, they woulda already.

There is nobody in the world that doesn't know this plan is called Obamacare for a reason. It was supposed to be his crowning achievement and the msm spent literally years building him up over this glorious debacle. They can print whatever spin they want but nobody but the most deluded liberal is gonna buy it and they would never vote for us anyway.

Nope. Been saying this for months and it is rolling out just the way I though. The plan is an unmitigated disaster and it is not only threatening the liberals in the mid-terms but the whole concept of big government liberalism is now in danger.

This is NH and Ayotte is our lone Republican national representative, who was AG of the state before heading to the Senate. Of course she's going to list her as a role model. It would be foolish political suicide to do otherwise. And like I said, I know nothing about Ms. Garcia's actual politics, so I don't know if she's conservative, RINO, or whatnot.

I just find it funny that, without fail, when the lefties decide to lash out at a Republican and/or conservative woman, the woman is invariably gorgeous and the troll invariably fugly as hell. It's like clockwork.

273 @72 23andme still lists their kits for sale. No idea how much longer. Hopefully they fight FDA's order in court and can keep selling the kits. FDA wants to regulate this as a medical device. It's a spit test. You spit some saliva into the kit, mail it back to 23andme and get your genetic data back. It doesn't *do* anything to your body. It just accurately reads your DNA. But the FDA says you're too stupid to be trusted with knowledge of your own genetic code.
Lots of things that don't "do"anything to the body are classified as medical devices. In particular, diagnostic products such as pregnancy testsare regulated as medicaldevices. There are lots of intricacies to the deviceclassification process. My guess is that 23andme is claiming that their kit is not a device since it doesn't diagnose any specific medicalcondition.

274 "Almost 80 million people with employer health plans could find their coverage canceled because they are not compliant with ObamaCare, several experts predicted. "

275 "So who gets to decide whether a company is "religious" or not?"

The NLRB assumed that role in 2011 when it ruled that Saint Xavier University in Chicago was "not Catholic enough" to be permitted a religious exemption to unionization activities. (This was Obama's kangaroo NLRB; I don't know if its ruling has stood up.) Expect to see a *lot* more of this: government agencies taking upon themselves to determine just who is religious and who isn't.

276 , “at least half the people on employer plans would by 2014 start losing plans as well.”

It's happening now. Those 80 million are people like me who have employer provided insurance that had reasonable co-pays, prescription drug coverage and low deductibles.

Starting in 2014, I will have an Obamacare compliant plan even though the employer mandate was put off for a year. I get to pay $9750 in additional premiums, $6000 annual deductible and no co-pays or drug plan. It will pay 80% after $6000 so I better have something catestrophic happen just for this to make any kind of financial sense. Otherwise, my wallet takes a $15,000 annual hit for absolutely no benefit.
