The Lightbringer Has Come Not To Bring Light, But Chaos and Darkness

Blue Cross/Blue Shield of North Dakota has a grim bit of non-advice:

So simply put, I don’t know what to advise anyone seeking health insurance as of this minute.

This reminds me of a book called Hit and Run, about the once-successful producing team of Jon Peters and Peter Guber.

Peter Guber, if I remember right, was something of a square, a business-oriented sort, who I think went to business school and such.

Jon Peters was the more mercurial of the pair. He was Barbara Streisand's former hairdresser, and, IIRC, lover, who then became a movie producer. (That's Hollywood for ya!)

But the book discussed Jon Peters' method. Peters, some of his colleagues believed, thrived on chaos. He made nonsensical changes last-minute, throwing off scripts, shooting schedules, and budgets. He would suddenly be committed to an oddball idea that no one had even heard before, nevermind agreed to include in the movie.

They speculated that Peters wasn't able to perform in a "normal" environment, where he would tend to feel marginalized by the more professional sorts of people.

He preferred chaos. And what some of his colleagues believed was this: When he created chaos, he was the Center of the Storm, and the only person who understood what the hell was going on, because he, after all, was causing all the problems. So creating chaos tended to put him in the central position of power on a set, because everyone would have to come to him to find out how to fix the problems.. that he himself had caused.

And by doing so, he created power for himself. On a "normal" sort of shoot, power flowed to the more centered, more predictable partner Guber, or the other more professionally-minded movie people; but on a chaotic set, power flowed to Peters, who worked well in a chaotic environment.

Or at least he wasn't as bothered by chaos as most people, and thus would appear to be calm and cool by comparison -- a rock in the storm. Again, the storm he created, but he would appear to be a fairly steady rock in that storm.*

I'm starting to wonder if No-Drama Obama shares this preference for chaos and upheaval with Jon Peters.

* Jon Peters wasn't entirely without some sparks of creativity. It was his idea to make the poster for the 1988 Batman contain no text or title, just the Batman logo and (I think) a release date. Which was credited at the time as being pretty innovative and grabby, and I think they were right to credit it as such.

86 The longer this goes on, the more Obama looks like the empty figurehead that he is.

I'm reminded me of the Porter (Mel Gibson) line from the movie Payback: "One man. You go high enough, you always come to one man."

There's good reason for that- if there's not a leader in place to provide direction, you end up with decision by committee. This usually results in clusterfuckery, which is why companies have one CEO or President, sports teams have one head coach, etc.

That's not present in this administration, and it's finally starting to show. He had no plan to deal with a broken website or millions being dropped from their insurance.

This leaves him torn between his liberal base, vulnerable Democrats, insurance companies, and his cabinet advisers- and their interests don't align.

A leader acts, but Obama can do little but react.

Oh, I think that's abundantly obvious. But it doesn't mean he's wrong about this.

This.

The story of Peters and the mechanical spider is somewhat infamous at this point.

I think Peters was also the same producer who knew nothing about Superman and tried to create a script where the costume gave Superman his powers, not his alien origin, and that Lex Luthor would turn out to be a Kryptonian who would end up having a Matrix-style flying fight with Superman.

If I had to deal with Peters, I'd probably be a fat, stoned asshole like Smith, too.

There's another way of saying the same thing; 'firemen' (not to denigrate those professionals who put out real fires.)

These mountain men, who turn small problems in big mountain, who set fires so they can be the hero who puts the fire out. When things are running smoothly there is no need for the professional manager, the crisis manager, the rain maker, the one who walks on water. So, a little chaos, a little conflagration, a 'crisis, for god's sake, we have to do something' that only the rainmaker can handle. It's his justification, and he gets the big bucks for putting out the conflagration he started. They're in government too.

116 I woke up this mornin' with the sundown shinin' in
I found my mind in a brown paper bag within
I tripped on a cloud and fell-a eight miles high
I tore my mind on a jagged sky
I just dropped in to see what condition my policy was in

(Yeah, yeah, oh-yeah, what condition my policy was in)

I pushed my soul in a deep dark hole and then I followed it in
I watched myself crawlin' out as I was a-crawlin' in
I got up so tight I couldn't unwind
I saw so much I broke my mind
I just dropped in to see what condition my policy was in

(Yeah, yeah, oh-yeah, what condition my policy was in)

Someone painted "April Fool" in big black letters on a "Dead End" sign
I had my foot on the gas as I left the road and blew out my mind
Eight miles outta Memphis and I got no spare
Eight miles straight up downtown somewhere
I just dropped in to see what condition my policy was in

122 Ace. This is a facet of Narcissism(*). Simply put, if you can create a situation where only you can save the day, be the hero, then you naturally become the savior, the center of attention, the hero.

But eventually, you create a situation that is too big for even your super powers. And the crash results. The star that was on your door, proof-positive that you are The Man, suddenly becomes an albatross. Once you've demonstrated that you can't super-psychically make the world bow to your every whim, the world turns against you in a huge way.

That is what is happening now. Obama's narcissism has written a check that he really can't cash. And we are witnessing a very public crash of his image.

The biggest concern we should have in this situation is how deeply, in fact, Obama's narcissism runs. As I understand it--if it is a neurosis, then he'll just melt down and we'll see a continued public display of how petty and superficial he really is. However, if it is deeper and more comprehensive, we could see a real break. And that would be an incredibly dangerous for all of us.

* I am not a trained mental health professional. Unfortunately, I've had to do some research on the subject, due to my relationship with someone who demonstrates a slightly lesser level of narcissism than Obama appears to exhibit. Frankly, I wish I were wrong about this, but I fear not.

But the situation now is that pretty much nobody can even FIND OUT about this insurance they are mandated to obtain.

How it is done is of little or no concern to him, which is a big problem. Chaos results when people flail blindly at a task without clearcut direction from above, the kind ofguidance that's only possible with genuine leadership that knows how to motivate people and manage resources on a large scale. That would not be President Obama--or Yul Brenner playing Pharoh, either.

So don't bother the President with the petty details, okay? His whim is a command. His will is law. That sort of thing, the sort of thing that happens when you give a preening, none-too-bright narcissist real power.

158 Daily Mail online:

Revealed: Obamacare plans will cost MORE 'in many cases' even with government subsidies, officials admit for the first time

The Obama administration has directly conceded for the first time that 'in many cases,' health insurance plans offered through government exchanges are more expensive than plans consumers bought before the Affordable Care Act became law – even when government subsidies are figured in.

In a letter to state insurance commissioners, Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight director Gary Cohen wrote on Thursday that one reason for the new Obamacare measures the president announced Thursday is that millions of consumers receiving cancellation letters from their insurers are learning the Affordable Care Act options are in fact less affordable.

'Although affected individuals and small businesses may access quality health insurance coverage through the new Health Insurance Marketplaces,' Cohen wrote, 'in many cases with federal subsidies, some of them are finding that such coverage would be more expensive than their current coverage, and thus they may [be] dissuaded from immediately transitioning to such coverage.'

His written statement contradicts President Obama's campaign promises that the Affordable Care Act would lower costs for Americans.

In October of that year he said during a campaign rally in Columbus, Ohio that 'we are going to work with you to lower your premiums by $2,500. We will not wait 20 years from now to do it, or 10 years from now to do it. We will do it by the end of my first term as president.'

So creating chaos tended to put him in the central position of power on a set, because everyone would have to come to him to find out how to fix the problems.. that he himself had caused."

This does accurately describe the Democrat Party and the principle underlying Progress (and coincidentally, Stalin), but it might not be an accurate description of Obama. Obama almost certainly has a preference for upheaval, but it's probably the sort of upheaval over which he feels he has adequate control. At this point, he has lost all control and is merely reacting, and that was probably not the plan.

197 Indian newspaper The Hindu obtained a U.S. State Department internal memo to delegates at the U.N.’s climate conference in Warsaw, ordering them to oppose charging rich countries “compensation or reparation” for historic greenhouse gas emissions — essentially making rich countries, like the U.S., pay for emissions that have allegedly raised global temperatures.

“It’s our sense that the longer countries look at issues like compensation and liability, the more they will realize this isn’t productive avenue for the [U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change] to go down,” the State Department document reads.

Reminds me a bit of a story about Michelangelo and the David statue, which was commissioned by the city of Florence. The gonfaloniere of Florence, Piero Soderini, came by the workshop to check on the completed statue. He complimented Michelangelo on the statue, but remarked that the nose was too big.

Michelangelo climbed the scaffolding with his hammer and chisel (palming some marble dust from a workbench) and started smacking away on the tools, dropping marble dust from his hands with each tap, but never touching the statue itself.

He came down from the scaffolding to find Soderini standing at the bottom with a big grin on his face.

"See, now isn't that a LOT better?"

249 I'd have to disagree here Ace. Peters was as you say but I think he was also of the mind that great things are only produced under stress. So, he would make things stressful to get the most from people knowing he could aways fix it as he was artificially creating the stress. The fact that he also comes out as the "rock in the storm" as you say was an ego booster for him.

Obama is just the opposite. Obama believes that anything he comes up with is by definition the best thing. It should work perfectly and be stress free as it is the correct thing. Finding it is not is very frustrating for him as it calls into question his wisdom so others are immediately to blame for not properly implementing his wisdom which after all can not be wrong in and of itself as it comes from him.

Obama does not thrive on chaos. He thrives on finding people who keep him as far from the chaos, mostly of his creation, as possible.

Yes, remember that speech he gave in which he told the story of how he'd had a fender bender shortly after graduating law school, and he'd called his insurance company to find out when he could expect his check.

The claims adjuster had to explain to Mr. Harvard Law School graduate that his liability-only policy did not cover collision damage to his vehicle. Years after the fact, Barry cited that story as evidence that insurance is a "rip off." He had auto insurance, so it should have paid for everything -- no matter what the policy said.

The man had spent three years studying law, and couldn't even understand the terms of his own auto insurance contract. He's an idiot.

If memory serves, what kept those two dorks going for as long as they did was that they ascended to be studio bosses at the same time that the Japanese bought into Hollywood in a huge way. Turned them loose with a bottomless checkbook.

The two blew through frankly insane amounts of money to no productive end, and the home office in Japan never really questioned it, figuring that moviemaking was some incomprehensible gaijin thing that wasn't subject to normal rules of accounting.

Until the Japanese finally wised up and realized that they had thrown away over a billion. Not a billion yen. A billion dollars.

Sure. It's a pretty well-known Michelangelo story, although the details change a bit depending on who's telling it (I've seen multiple versions), so don't be surprised if the wife tells it differently.

Another story I enjoy revolves around Michelangelo's fresco The Last Judgement. He received a lot of criticism for the nude bodies in the painting, given it's location in the Sistine Chapel. The Pope's Master of Ceremonies Biagio da Cesena was so caustic in his criticism that Michelangelo put his likeness in the painting.

In Hell. Wearing donkey's ears.

When da Cesena complained, the Pope supposedly told him that his jurisdiction only included spiritual matters on Earth. "If Michelangelo has put you into Hell, I don't have the power to get you out."

274 186 As much as we try to draw parallels between Obama and any other former President, the reality falls short.....So, we look outside the U.S. at former dictators....

My mother started calling him Huguito (little Hugo) as early as 2008. I think she nailed it.

Despite a couple of superficial differences --- Obama's high-class pants creases, Hugo's folksy singing talent --- they are very much alike. They really do see themselves as Lightbringers but are completely ignorant of how the world works.

This makes them incompetent and always treading water trying to undo the damage they're causing. They blame everything on others. They cannot tolerate criticism. They struggle at all costs to maintain their messianic image.

275 259 I don't think he thrives on chaos. Dude is permanently out to lunch. He's along for the ride. Moochele runs his family, he was always a back bench senator being President is the first time he's had to lead anything other than his golf foursome. The chaos is caused by the power vacuum that he's managed to cause.

I disagree. I think this is a systematic destruction of the country that's been planned since Dear Leader was chooming with Bill Ayers and his skank wife Bernadine.

I agree with Rush on this. I could not think of a better way of destroying this country than what we've been seeing since 2009.

I don't know how to link You Tubes, but go to You Tube and search for "Paul Harvey and if I were trying to destroy America". He made it in 1965 and it is scary.

276 I think you give Divot too much credit. He is the Urkel of presidents and in way over his head.

277 He totally miscalculated the personalization that is health care. Each and every person has an intense vested interest in their health; more than finances, more than religion.

And by decision more embroils the fray
By which he reigns.

280 It was alluded to already, but if you want good a Jon Peters story you have to watch Kevin Smith's thing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgYhLIThTvk

282 Do I think Obama is intentionally creating chaos?

Good try. You are hoping he is not as idiotic as he appears, aren't you?

283 I've worked with/for people like that. They love chaos because they think it puts them in control. The sad fact is that little or nothing gets done and the cause of it all then looks for scapegoats. The only satisfaction one can ever got with these turkeys is to point out to them, in front of others, what they are doing and let them know that they are the cause of, and had sole responsibility for, the result. I have done this and I usually got a lot of hostility in return, but they also almost always ended up marginalized or shown the door. Of course the best time I ever had was shortly before I retired. I was able to verbally shoot up two of these idiots and there was nothing they could do to me. Proving the validity of the old Turkish proverb, "He who would speak the truth should have one foot in the stirrup!"

284 Administration is hard work. Mr. O is too lazy or incompetent to do even a half-decent job.

285 A psychologist named Paul Fick wrote an entire book (The Dysfunctional President) about Bill Clinton's love of chaos, which he said was characteristic of adult children of alcoholics. He differentiates Obama's behavior (in The Destructive President and at destructivepresident.com), which he ties to Obama's multiple experiences of parental abandonment and dislocation:

"He suffered
what is known as a narcissistic wound, a wound that resulted in
significant insecurity which he attempts to mask with arrogance.... It
is in this [fundamental] 'transformation' [of America] that we witness the manifestation of
Obama’s inner psychological process teeming with resentment and hate.
Obama’s destructive presidency grossly differs from Clinton’s
dysfunctional presidency. Clinton’s anger from his unresolved childhood
pain was self-directed. Clinton sought to sabotage himself publicly and
did so in humiliating fashion. Obama’s rage, in contrast, is externally
directed. His controlling personality style causes him to blame others
and excuse himself when things go wrong. Using victim logic, Obama
resents a litany of perceived wrongdoings for which he now seeks
vengeance. In Obama’s convoluted thought process distorted by his rage,
those wrongdoings were perpetrated on him unjustly and personally with
the blessings of institutions like marriage, family, the American
socioeconomic system, religion, the legal system, race relations, and
the Constitution. The unrelenting feeling of hate screams for a 'transformation' of all of these areas of American life."

286 "North Dakota is a bunch of red neck liars that hate blacks. How many
blacks live in North Dakota...Very few because the place is
racist............."

Hmmm...sounds like a great place to live. 20 below tends to keep the riff raff out. They grow a surplus of food and energy, hard working Anglo-German-Scandinavian culture, tall blond woman and everyone is armed and can handle a gun. That seems to me the place to be when the SHTF.

287 "You're a better man than I am. I try not to think about Obama, because it's unhealthy. Basically, I need the filter of wittier and smarter people like Ace and most of you in order to deal with the reality that the country I love is being destroyed from within."
THIS.
