Yellowstone Park Rangers Use "Gestapo" Tactics to Harrass Seniors on Tour Bus

"Gestapo" is their word, not mine.

Vaillancourt was one of thousands of people who found themselves in a national park as the federal government shutdown went into effect on Oct. 1. For many hours her tour group, which included senior citizen visitors from Japan, Australia, Canada and the United States, were locked in a Yellowstone National Park hotel under armed guard.

The tourists were treated harshly by armed park employees, she said, so much so that some of the foreign tourists with limited English skills thought they were under arrest.

...

The bus stopped along a road when a large herd of bison passed nearby, and seniors filed out to take photos. Almost immediately, an armed ranger came by and ordered them to get back in, saying they couldn’t “recreate.” The tour guide, who had paid a $300 fee the day before to bring the group into the park, argued that the seniors weren’t “recreating,” just taking photos.

“She responded and said, ‘Sir, you are recreating,’ and her tone became very aggressive,” Vaillancourt said.

The seniors quickly filed back onboard and the bus went to the Old Faithful Inn, the park’s premier lodge located adjacent to the park’s most famous site, Old Faithful geyser. That was as close as they could get to the famous site — barricades were erected around Old Faithful, and the seniors were locked inside the hotel, where armed rangers stayed at the door.

...

The bus trip made headlines in Livingston, where the local newspaper Livingston Enterprise interviewed the tour guide, Gordon Hodgson, who accused the park service of “Gestapo tactics.”

“The national parks belong to the people,” he told the Enterprise. “This isn’t right.”

Via Breitbart.

Note that they were not permitted "to recreate." To be physically present, yes. But to recreate? No.

There is no difference between the two things as far as cost in money to the government.

The only difference is that the government and its petty minions wishes to actively harm and harass its citizens.

There must be a purge of the Park service when this is all done. Fire most of them, reduce it to a skeleton force. They're bad apples. They seem to imagine they own the national legacy, and can shut it down in service of the Party of Government.

There must be a price paid for such a fascist notion.

57 From the article:

The experience brought up many feelings in Vaillancourt. What struck her most was a widely circulated story about a group of World War II veterans who were on a trip to Washington, D.C., to see the World War II memorial when the shutdown began. The memorial was barricaded and guards were posted, but the vets pushed their way in.

That reminded her of her father, a World War II veteran who spent three years in a Japanese prisoner of war camp.

“My father took a lot of crap from the Japanese,” she recalled, her eyes welling with tears. “Every day they made him bow to the Japanese flag. But he stood up to them.

“He always said to stand up for what you believe in, and don’t let them push you around,” she said, adding she was sad to see “fear, guns and control” turned on citizens in her own country.

103 National Park Service Park Rangers are often environmental fascists. They see their job as protecting the National Parks from the hordes of destructive tourists. Yellowstone is near the top.

In the old days there were news stories about how visitors to the National Park System were 'loving the parks to death', and pleas from environmentalists to not visit the parks because of all the damage people do when they visit. It was a common theme. Yosemite was another.

Now that we have a mumble president who has given the order to close the parks, these environmental fascists are in heaven doing the job they were called by god to do; protect the parks.

105 And what exactly would the NPS have done if one of those tourists had said, "Bugger this," and left the building? Would they have shot him/her? Would they have really raised their gun or their taser and SHOT an innocent person -- probably in the back, mind you -- for having the gall to leave a building to go look at a geological phenomenon on public land in a free country?

I think all these LEOs in the gubmint -- not just NPS -- need to ask themselves that question and then really THINK about what their answer says about them.

I am...
...a racist, jihadi, a terrorist, an extremist, a... well, I've lost track.

But when we had our "It's gonna happen" meeting on Monday we were told that the orders had come down from the top to make the shutdown as painful as possible. We are run by Obama appointees - THEY are the top, not the House of Representatives.

And I hope everybody took note of the shutdown of the Claude Moore Farm this week. Armed police were sent to remove all staff from the property. Although the farm sits on federal property, it runs completely on private funding and volunteers.

Anybody who thinks this is not significant is very, very foolish. We increasingly have a para-military police force. The bad guys got bigger and better weapons - the police have had to adapt to that. What we are seeing this week is police who are enforcing orders that they may not agree with, may know are foolish or unjust, but who are willing to enforce those orders. It's their job. They are just following orders.

How long before the orders are more onerous? How long until it's escalated? How long will they just keep doing their jobs, just keep following orders?

How much longer are people going to ignore the history of countries like Germany, lost in the belief that "It can't happen here. We're different."

And the question is what do we do about it? It's obvious that our checks and balances have failed - we are already living in a soft tyranny. How do we remove the cancer that is destroying this country?

It can never happen here? It fucking IS happening here.

Good points, and true. But usually these rangers live in the area; no doubt they see the harm wrought on nearby towns with no money being spent by those gallumping tourists. That pain is not worth getting to play mini-gaia for a bit.

My state leaders are close to saying screw the govt, we're opening our parks anyway. Good on them, do it NOW.

I'm told the poll numbers are still (incredibly) in Obama's favor on this issue. I have to ask: are we the only people who know what's going on? I can't watch all channels and read all blogs all the time, so I'm guessing I lead a somewhat insular existence in that regard, but are these travesties and abuses going entirely unreported by the MSM?

196 Contrast the brand of "customer service" we citizens are getting at the hands of the Park Service during the shutdown with the unbelievable customer service you get at Disney World or Disneyland. Why aren't these things privatized? Put them in a trust, stipulate the terms of the trust (i.e., Yellowstone property can't be sold, can't be turned into golf courses, etc.), and then hire a private trustee to run the place.

You all have met these minions.

Of course, I warned them that the number one place you will encounter this is in your interactions with gubmint employees.

Admittedly, this incident described here is a step farther, with armed personnel involved which adds a nice scare factor to the whole ordeal. But here is what will happen at worst -- One, maybe two, Park Service employees will get a rebuke note in their files. That's it. That's all they ever get. No one will lose their jobs over this.

I live in PA and we had a state park administrator that weekended in a state owned lakefront house at the park. He hated us windsurfing from HIS front lawn. He would send rangers out to try to move us to the boat launch. He retired and the harassment ended.

279 If only they did this kind of stuff for substantive reasons, rather than pure political posturing...

Go through the budget, line by line, and pass funding for stuff that the government is supposed to to. Single page funding bills, no fancy BS titles, specific authorizations and no other fluff.

If they did that, maybe we could get somewhere. Instead, let's fund HeadStart so that we can call out Democrats for voting against it next year before the election. Worthless idiots.

***

It's politics, but there's more to it than that. Every funding bill that the Dems turn down extends the shutdown and gets us closer to Oct 17th. The pressure will build for the Dems to compromise on SOMETHING. Instead of two separate debates about the budget and the debt ceiling, it will become one giant negotiation.

280 This, is your tax money at work.

This, is your government, using the auspices of your state against you.

Part of the "Shutdown" negotiation should now be a top to bottom purge of the entire park service. We should return those lands and properties to the state. We shouldn't be paying for them on a federal level anyway.

When Obama threatened the defense contractors to get them to not send notices of impending layoffs before the last election as required by law Romney should have put the bureaucrats and businesses involved on notice that they would be punished should he win.

Same goes with these park employees and the IRS dragoons. It should be a part of every election that their ranks will be purged and they will be made to pay a personal price for going along with illegal orders or with overstepping their authority. Government employment should not be a license to abuse the citizenry.

As far as I can tell recreate means to refresh, bring new life. Lots of people feel refreshed after viewing a beautiful vista. So Park Rangers, how do you deal with that? Put horse blinders on people? I suppose if recreation were a bridge too far, being a horse's ass to everyone would in fact remove them from a state of recreation.

Ah OK, This one you mean:

Two Army Rangers, a nurse and an Army criminal investigator were killed in a roadside bomb attack in Zhari, Afghanistan, on Sunday, authorities said this morning.

One of the Rangers was killed while trying to aid a fallen comrade.

The criminal investigator killed was the first agent of Criminal Investigation Command to die in Iraq or Afghanistan, though agents often assist special operations forces.

■ 1st Lt. Jennifer M. Moreno, 25, of San Diego, Calif., a nurse assigned to Madigan Army Medical Center, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash. She was with an Army Special Operations Command cultural support team.

■ Sgt. Patrick C. Hawkins, 25, of Carlisle, Pa., assigned to Company B, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Benning, Ga.

■ Sgt. Joseph M. Peters, 24, of Springfield, Mo., a special agent assigned to the 5th Military Police Battalion, Vicenza, Italy.

■ Pfc. Cody J. Patterson, 24, of Philomath, Ore., assigned to Company B, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, at Fort Benning, Ga.

Col. Christopher S. Vanek, commander of the 75th Ranger Regiment, called Hawkins a “man of character and commitment” and said Patterson, “had a limitless future.”

Sgt. Patrick C. Hawkins

Hawkins was moving to the aid of a fallen comrade when he was killed, Col. Patrick J. Ellis, commander of 3rd Battalion said in a statement.

“Sgt. Patrick Hawkins was a brave and incredibly talented Ranger,” Ellis said. “His actions that night were in keeping with the epitome of the Ranger Creed: ‘I will never leave a fallen comrade.’ Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hawkins family during this difficult time.”

Hawkins had turned 25 five days before he was killed and was on his fourth deployment. He served as a rifleman, gun team leader and Ranger team leader with Company B.

His awards and decorations include the Ranger Tab, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Parachutist Badge, and the U.S. Army Expert Rifle Marksmanship Qualification Badge. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and Purple Heart.

He is survived by his wife and parents.

Pfc. Cody J. Patterson

“Pfc. Cody Patterson was the poster child for the Ranger Regiment,” Ellis said of the rifleman, who was killed on his second deployment to Afghanistan.

“He was courageous and dedicated and lost his life while fighting tenaciously against our nation’s enemies alongside his fellow Rangers. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Patterson family.”

Patterson’s awards and decorations include the Parachutist Badge and the Army Expert Rifle Marksmanship Qualification Badge. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and Purple Heart.

Patterson is survived by his parents, and a sister, all in Philomath, Ore.

1st Lt. Jennifer M. Moreno

Moreno, who was on her first deployment, commissioned into the Army as a nurse. She went on to complete the Army Airborne Course in 2009 and served in a medical surgical unit at Madigan before she deployed in June with a special operations Cultural Support Team.

Such teams are typically comprised of female soldiers who can engage Afghan women.

“She was a talented member of our team who lost her life while serving her country in one of the most dangerous environments in the world,” Ellis said. “Her bravery and self-sacrifice were in keeping with the highest traditions of the 75th Ranger Regiment. She was making a difference in Afghanistan and that legacy will live on. The Moreno family is in our thoughts and prayers.”

Moreno was posthumously awarded the Combat Action Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Purple Heart, Afghanistan Campaign Medal and NATO Medal. She previously held the Parachutist Badge.

She is survived by her mother and two sisters in San Diego, Calif., and her brother, who is serving in the U.S. Army.

Sgt. Joseph M. Peters:

Peters was on this third deployment; the two previous deployments were to Iraq.

Peters completed courses in protective services, human intelligence collection, crime scene investigation and analyst-interrogator collaboration.

CID spokesman Chris Grey said agents’ specialized training and capabilities, such as evidence collection, “have proven to be invaluable to special operations forces.

“That's why our agent was with this team,” Grey said.

“I have to tell you having worked with these men and women for many years now, CID special agents are very aware and accept the fact that they are in an inherently dangerous profession whether conducting a murder investigation in the U.S. or supporting combat operations overseas,” Grey said. “They are passionate about their profession and are truly dedicated heroes.”

Maj. Gen. David Quantock, the Army’s provost marshal general and commander of Army Criminal Investigation Command, called Peters, “a highly respected agent and soldier who sacrificed his life in the defense of this nation.”

“We are extremely proud of his service and what he accomplished as a CID Special Agent and as a soldier,” Quantock said. “His death is a reminder to all of us of the unequaled contributions our military members and their families make on a daily basis in the defense of the freedoms that we all enjoy and value so dearly.”

He was posthumously awarded the Combat Action Badge, Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.

Peters is survived by his wife and 20-month-old son.

Yeah I read about this. Tragedy. Fight or get the fuck out. Tragic

Best thing about this SpiteHouse activity, perhaps the LIVs will finally take notice.

Rush earlier today played extended tape from Sebelius appearing on Jon Stewart. Stewart set her up for a series of softballs she could use to prove Republicans are crazy, and she was generally evasive and lied repeatedly. She specifically wouldn't answer "how come corporations get a waiver and individuals can't?" 3 times. After she was off, he said "She was lying to me!"

So we're not winning per se because of that, but it does mean LIVs are finding out that just maybe Emperor God-King Barry isn't really the Hero of the Middle Class since he's helping out eeeevil CEOs of Gaia Raping Big Business but won't help the common (wo)man.

Heh. I remember, that many years ago, a Yellowstone park employee with a sense of humor mounted a 6" gate valve on a couple of pipe elbows and flanges, and set it out near Old Faithful. When the eruption was due, he went out, and furiously spun the wheel on gate valve, and Lo! and Behold!, the eruption came as expected.

He got fired for that joke. So being an arrogant, humorless prick has long been a job qualification in NPS, it seems.

Seriously, this is going to get ridiculously ugly.

Also, I was pondering that it shouldn't be that difficult to start naming names of Park Rangers. There has to be a directory or the like that's cached in the Wayback. Find that district. Post every name along with a statement that someone in this group unlawfully detained American citizens and that since the Park Service is refusing to say who, we are asking for help from those there to identify them.

getting dangerously lost on foot for four days in West Texas and living

387 Once when I was in college, I was out hiking with some friends. We passed some guys on the trail who were smoking some ganja. They asked us some questions about the trail system (which color blazes went in which direction, stuff like that,) and we chatted with them for a minute or two.

Half an hour later, a Parks Police car pulled up with the ganja smokers in the back under arrest. This fascist asshole Parks Police creep ordered us all to assume the position, patted us down, called for backup, cuffed us and threw us in the backup cruiser.

We kept asking why we were being arrested and the fascist asshole kept saying we were "with" the ganja smokers, and they knew this because an undercover officer posing as another hiker had seen us talking to them. (who knew there were undercover parks Police officers?)

We kept trying to tell the fascist asshole that we didn't even know those guys and had simply stopped to help them with some questions they had about the various trails. All the Parks Police had to do was fucking ASK them, but that would be too simple.

All in all, we were detained for over 2 hours and had the wits scared out of us before they had to let us go, since none of us had so much as a seed or a stem in our possession and we had not been participating in the recreating.

That's what you get from the Parks Police for trying to help some lost hikers.

This tops it, folks.

Please call your representative, no matter the political party, and put a stop to this. I read (Washington Times) that normally families receive benefits within 36 hours. The Pentagon is saying it is due to shut down, which is an executive order.

Their names, may they RIP:
Sgt. Patrick C. Hawkins
Pfc. Cody J. Patterson
1st Lt. Jennifer M. Moreno
Special Agent Joseph M. Peters

They gave their lives for us. It is time to help them and protect others in the military from this cruel decision by the White House.

Congress finally had to drag the head of NPS in to get him to explain why he was not enforcing the law. He sat there and made up bull shit excuses for not doing anything. Congress finally had to pressure him into doing his job enforcing the law and kicking OWS out of the parks.

Of course the people being abused must stand their ground, or be subjugated. And when it's the elderly being abused by Gestapo government employees, it is everyone's responsibility to stop officious villainy.

445 I've seen the activist nature of Park Rangers first hand. I was briefly a member of a hunting club that bordered the Okefenokee NWR. there was a dirt road that ran around the border with the far side of the road being the border of the refuge.

The Rangers there were almost entirely tree hugger types and would do things like drive back and forth down the road first thing in the morning during hunting season with the windows down and radio on loud to spook everything in the area. When they saw someone in a tree stand within sight of their road they'd use a megaphone to "remind them to be safe". etc. etc.

Probably the worst abuse was when they'd see a hunter they didn't recognize they'd stop on the road so that their window was a couple of feet on the Federal side of the line and call them over. If the person didn't leave his gun on the club side of the road before he walked around to their window they'd either arrest or cite them for hunting or carrying a firearm on a refuge illegally. They would also park in the middle of the road and when people went around them on the refuge side they'd stop them and search the truck and take their guns and cite them for trespassing on the refuge.

I only had to see a couple of instances and hear the same stories over and over again for a little while and I never went back.

the best anyone could tell. All the rangers signed up for the NPS imagining themselves doing Grizzly research in Yellowstone and then end up in the Florida swamp, hot and covered in mosquitos. Bitter and pissed off.

From living in one of those mountain states (Idaho): A lot of the folks in the mountain states dislike three things: 1) "reintroduced" grey wolves 2) The federal government 3) California (which can include western Oregon and parts of Western Washington and tree huggers). I worked for the Sawtooth National Forest for a summer out of Fairfield, Idaho (don't blink) and talked to some of the cowboys who worked for Teton National Park, and some of those folks are really down to earth - heck, some of them aren't too fond of the enviros and their tactics either. 454 That attitude is pervasive. Museums will not allow cameras. The reasons given vary. The obvious fact so clear from observable behavior is they consider their position their own little fiefdom and protect it accordingly.

They must be taken apart. They must be.

The career employees actually consider their area to be their own property. At the museums too, to cite only one additional example.

Do not touch anything, of course. To not breath on anything, do not slough your skin cells on anything, your bacteria and moisture from your bodies ruins everything. We actually don't like you. They would say if they were frank about it, instead they actually list all their objections to your presence. It shows.

The Park Service withholds untold property to themselves. Private lakes only they can fish. Facilities only they can use. It is wrong, and even their own employees say so when first shown the internal wonders held for themselves.

One could say the same about every single federal agency. That is why there is no hope. You could remove every elected official in the fed and nothing would substantively change. 476 At Instapundit, he suggested transferring many of these federal parks to the states. That seems like a very reasonable idea. Arizona and South Dakota are much more motivated to ensure that people can visit The Grand Canyon and Mount Rushmore than the Federal Government is, as we have seen demonstrated over the past week by the petty and spiteful behavior of federal employees.

I suppose it is possible that the park rangers might get new jobs with the various state agencies but I doubt it.

I would assume that these national parks would only be transferred to states that ask for them. That pretty much means that only states run by Republicans would be taking over national parks and also ensuring that in any future federal government shut down presided over by a thin skinned dousche bag with a tin ear, only parks in Democrat states would be closed.
