The Party of Government and Its Petty Agents Step Up Their Harassment of Citizens to Extract Money From Them

Every profession is a conspiracy against the laity.

And sometimes they make it obvious.

When bureaucrats are threatened with irrelevance or face appearing unneeded, they respond by inflicting as much pain as possible, in hopes that they can prove they’re necessary and get their budgets increased. And even worse, an administration trying to make a political point — as Obama’s is — has every incentive to make a shutdown felt as acutely as possible. So obviously, we need to cancel the Navy-Air Force game as quickly as possible, even if the event is a voluntary activity by students requiring no expenditure of taxpayer funds.

The barricading of the World War II Memorial has now become the most visible incident in this case — and to be clear, it’s not a “closing” because there’s no such thing as “closing an open-air stone memorial in the middle of the National Mall. People walk past and through this memorial unaccompanied at all hours of the day and night. (And really, if they’re going to close that, why aren’t they closing the entire National Mall?)

To my knowledge, no one has been arrested yet for walking through Sherman Circle (pictured above, in a completely residential section of D.C.), but technically, that’s an NPS park, too. (And they’ve always done a lousy job keeping the grass mowed, so I doubt the shutdown will even be noticed there.) If NPS wants to be consistent, they should rope it off. But they won’t do that, because nobody from out of town visits Sherman Circle. The entire point here is to harass people only in the higher-profile parts of town that NPS controls.

The agents of the Party of Government should remember that Obama may sign their checks, but we actually pay their salaries.

For no-ow-ww...

Things may change.

Things will change.

We cannot endure a government which has evolved from a greedy parasite to an actual predator.

Nothing, and those who do this are going above and beyond. They should be celebrated.

That’s irrelevant, though. The question here is, why should we let the Democrats who set this policy slide, and instead blame someone else? We shouldn’t make the Park Ranger into a villain; that’s a waste of a perfectly good stupid policy set by the White House. The White House is the villain here.

Going over the top and accusing the Park Rangers of being mere steps removed from genocide is to take Obama’s incredibly stupid mistake and one-up it.

174 That TNR tweet yesterday was an utter historical fail. The coup attempt was against Gorbachev, not Yeltsin, and was plotted by members ofGorbachev's own government. And incidentally, Yeltsin was the political outsider who was fighting to bring free market policies to an ossified, broke, centralized, and corrupt economy.

254 Especially the Peace Prize. The nominations for the science Nobels are restricted, but there's a giant group of people who can nominate for the Peace Prize.

Yes, but I think the Nobel Peace Prize committee is feeling a little cross that they've had Obammy's warmongering flung back at them so much lately. They gave Obammy the prize to thumb their collective noses at Dubya, so they've already proven they're petty and vain. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them run with this nomination, JUST to spite Obama.

256 Ace,
Academy athletic events are not quite as simple as a voluntary activity that does not require Federal funding.
The cadets and midshipmen as well as the uniformed staff and faculty are covered. The civilians that support these programs may not be covered.
For example, some coaches are also instructors, whose pay is affected by the slowdown's furlough.
People who run the stadium and other support functions (security and such) may also be government employees who must be furloughed as non-mission essential personnel. Athletics, while important, are not amission essential academy function.
The bottom line is that it is illegal to spend Fiscal Year 14 money when such money has not been appropriated. The academies will not violate the law.
As to which political party is advantaged by cancelling these games (andall sports are affected, notjust football), I leave that to one's personal opinion or viewpoint.

I am unaware of any state in which employees pay into the state unemployment insurance system. In every state I have worked in or run businesses in, it is 100% employer funded. Just like Federal unemployment. The real question is do the Feds pay into the state UE funds like all private employers?

263 Whoever thought up the term "Barrycades": Brilliant.

Talk about an easy word to keep in your pocket and pull out as this shutdown continues, that is a superb summary catch-word for attribution to Federal behavior and, specifically, Barky's intransigence.

Barrycade - the very symbol and essence of Team Obama and their desire to impose strain/pain upon the American people.

Years from now, when I recall and retell the history of this shutdown, I'll remember "Barrycade".

268 We definitely need to find the person at OMB who ordered the Park Service to close the Memorial. That's a management-level decision that had to be taken by somebody.

Also, service academy football games make a profit, they are not a net expenditure at all. Fees for tickets, parking, and concessions more than pay the costs of manning the stadium for a day and the travel costs of the visiting team (which also always shows a net profit).

This type of blatant, arrogant overreach may well backfire on Wimpy McStompypants yet. If it does, great!

But even so, that doesn't mean the entire strategy of shutdown brinksmanship made sense if it depends upon unforced errors by the opposition. Obama should have learned from his sequester bluster blowback that trying to bring too much pain too fast and over-promising the dire effects can come back to haunt you. I guess when you are Anointed, learning is beneath you, though.

272 You are really not getting the concept of deterring future cooperation with the Obama regime by federal employees, are you?

I get the concept. I don’t see this tactic succeeding. At best, it gives the media a way to divert attention away from the President’s policy and toward those silly over-the-top conservatives.

At worst, it means that when we get to the point that employees really should be punished for doing what their employer asks, everything will think it’s silly to even think that, because it was in fact silly today.

If you can’t see that most people will think it’s silly to accuse Park Rangers of being on the same continuum as Nazis killing Jews, well, I don’t know what to say to that. But that’s not a viable tactic until it is, and using it before it is, just makes it not a viable tactic when it actually could have been.

Since Fed employees always get back pay, they would get into some trouble if they actually took it.

It might not be universally true, but according to a buddy who is currently a furloughed federal employee, contractors in their department weren't furloughed because the contracts had been paid in advance.
