Overnight Open Thread (27 Sep 2013)

Pictures of cute animals won't help Obamacare win over converts. Obamacare relies on people making bad choices.

The crux of Obamacare, the most basic thing essential to its success, is that millions of people have to do something that is not in their economic interest. They have to act against themselves, or the program doesn’t work.

Liberalism

Liberalism is funny. That one quart wastepaper basket pictured above is the new and approved receptacle for garbage by our overlords. It's supposed to save the planet and make you work out or something.

Celebrities In Weird Japanese Commercials

New Nike's?

The NFL

Well, perhaps it is time to no longer allow the NFL to claim nonprofit status. Especially if teams like the Ravens want to promote Obamacare.

Like Insty keeps saying, let's Repeal The Hollywood Tax Cuts too! All these celebretards vote for these guys, then they deserve to pay their taxes in full to support it.

Female Spetsnaz

Something tells me that combat is not what they have in mind for these female Spetsnaz recruits.

Breaking Bad Meets The Walking Dead

Orgasm Class

So, evidently there are women out there that are willing to pay $3500 to learn about "multiple orgasms and the mysterious g-spot".

Of course, in Russia, they offer a class for mastering the "art of oral sex". NSFW!

This Day In Music History

Cliff Burton of Metallica died on this day back in 1986. I didn't know this part though.

Metallica was en route on a road between Stockholm and Copenhagen, to their next gig that was scheduled for September 27th. Earlier that night the band drew cards for the assignment of the bunks on the tour bus. As fate would have it, Cliff drew the ace of spades and chooses Kirk Hammett's bunk.

The death card lives up to its name.

34 I am tired of hearing the GOP claim they only control 1/2 of 1/3 of the government. SCOTUS really isn't involved so they can be thrown out. So that takes them to 1/2 of 1/2. Now, they don't control the Senate but based on Senate rules they can pretty stop anything they want. That means for anything they want to stop they have 1/2. Now it's not a power they can use lightly. But on major issues they should be able to drag the Democrats to the negotiating table.

If you could be biblically certain that your assessment was correct, with absolutely no chance whatsoever of error, AND you were okay with forsaking your dignity and sense of self (assuming you based those things on a prior refusal to partake in the welfare state) then yeah, go for it. My dad once half-kiddingly (but only HALF) recommended I get on welfare when I got shitcanned from a job back in the day.

But you can't really be sure, can you? And you do lose a certain moral standing to complain IMO, regardless of what anyone says. You don't cancel out your objections completely, but you do lose a little something.

Finally, it really depends on what 'gravy' you're talking about.

I don't even know if the question is properly thought of as one of "ethics," come to think of it. It's not an ethical dilemma, insofar as you're not doing anything that's against the law nor even violating some obvious social trust or mores.

It really boils down to "can you look at yourself in the mirror"/"would you admit it to someone else?" thing. And that's a question only the questioner can answer, not us.

It is ethical only to the extent it does not foreclose your ability to effectively participate in the subsequent rebuilding at your fullest utilization of talents.

The reason Churchill had credibility in 1939 was because he had bought it through sacrifice. So, the answer is what credibility do you think you will need after the cliff so as to allow for recovery in the shortest amount of time, and how do you get it without limiting yourself via too much sanctimony?

And this from someone who is still young-ish by horde standards, and was still a teenager when I became an avowed cynic.

Actually, I'm a deeply cynical person (as anyone following the through-line of my posts could figure out). But I'm a cynic who wants to be an optimist despite it all. And the reason for that is I want to have a family. Kids. I don't buy into the inevitability of American implosion not only because I'm enough of a student of history to understand how contingent it truly is, but because it feels like a suicide rap to me to do so.

Not telling anyone else how to feel on this matter, just saying that it's going to take a lot more than this to get me to the "we're all fucked forever, burn it down" phase.

I really hate Ethics questions. I am a CPA and have to take Ethics continuing education every two years - 4 hours worth, and had to take more to get the license many years ago.
My problem with the questions is they always go to the grey areas. I have a good feel for ethics from my upbringing and personal instincts. I have told more than one employer that they are intruding upon what feels right to me, and they can fire me if they are not happy with my attitude.
As someone stated above (more than once), my bottom line is if I can look at myself in the morning every day for the rest of my life and not feel a cringe factor seeping in.
And it pisses me off to no end that asshole big CPA firms that caused a lot of the financial scandals over the years I have had my license obviously had no fu**ing standards at all, but I have to pay for it.
That goes double for the fu**ing politicians that all act so holier than thou!

211 People can talk all they want about how ObamaCare will be the downfall of Obama, and the Democrat party, and etc etc etc.

I don't buy it.

In November of 2012, in the worst economy in decades, with unemployment at record levels, with an administration that had just left four to die in Libya while making agonizing gaffes ("You didn't build that!"), Barack Hussein Obama was re-elected to a second term.

That's not something that happens casually or due to unseen logic. That's the death-throe of a republic that will never see the sunlight again.

People who think, "Well, the electorate will obviously wake up NOW, now that all this is happening!"...well, I admire those folk's optimism, badly displaced though it is.

We're not getting out of this. There's no shining knight out there. The darkness you see is not what's spending itself before the onslaught of dawn, that darkness is the sea of locusts covering the sun. And that darkness is going to get darker, and darker, and darker still.

Those who are hoping that people will "wake up" are again, people whose boundless faith I admire. Admire but cannot share.

There's no way out of here, folks. I'm ready for it all to end. As Steve Buscemi said in "Armageddon" "I've got a front-row seat."

And yeah I know that's not exactly what he said, and he was covered in duct tape, but what's the value of a good quote if you can't change it?

Nicolas Cage in "Knowing" should have the tagline, "The feel good movie of the year!"

Goodnight.

215 cthulhu: yeah about the bonds, but Texas (at least IMHO from what I've seen) is one of the few states that I think would tell the Feds to eat their paper if push came to shove.

Of course, that then leads to the question of how the Feds would retaliate. Close all Fed offices in TX? Remove all the military bases? It would hurt. But a dependent blue state wouldn't nearly have the private sector wealth to help patch the wounds.

Could there be a disaster coming? Of course. But I don't think it's hopeless.

Didn't want to be rude to him so I said yeah, a little bit.

He then proceed to ask me if I know of Scott Lingemfelter?

249 In the part of the podcast I'm hearing, they're talking about right-hand drive or left-hand drive cars....

A couple of anecdotes....my sister was in a school presentation in either Nursery School or Kindergarten where they had the younger kids do this "clap left, clap right" move....so after she graduates from college, she's driving me around the town where she lives and I go, "take the next right" -- and she does this abbreviated pantomime which goes "think 'clap', move left hand, think 'clap', start to look right...."

Second one, from the BH.....she had an assignment where she was setting up a tech support group in Ireland and was there for a month. Since she was there for that long, she rented a car. Now, they drive on the left in Ireland (as in the UK), and she's never been all that strong on handedness....in fact, she always wore a ring with a RRRrrrrruby on her RRRrrrrrright hand, so that she could just look at her fingers.

After I got back, I asked her how she had coped with driving on the left, with her and everyone else going the "wrong way". Turns out, she had some difficulty at first, but moved her ring to the other hand and did fine thereafter.

successful marriages, among my friends, are much more common with people that had inexpensive / small weddings and or eloped. much less confusion and stress affecting your judgement as you near the big day.

256 If you're in the Reno area, Virginia City is worth a visit. It was a for-real Silver boom town back in the day, and while there's a touristy element to the presentation of the main drag, it's still not exactly glitzy. My wife loved staring down into the giant hole above town that was the main access to the local part of the Comstock Lode. Not a tour or anything, just a lonely hole, except some donkey who thought it was his territory and kept braying at us. He may still be there.

Prepare for some windy mountain driving to get there.

Of course, I wonder if Elizabeth O'Bagyactual doctorate. comes from that school of fellatio, which might explain how she got as far as she did. She may be able to get McStain's wrinkled ol' prick up like no other.

A few years back, I was talking to the owner of a liquor store, who was telling me that Costco was having problems with people going into their stores and buying items with a lot of air in the packaging (e.g. a chair in a cardboard box), and sneaking cartons of cigs into the boxes before going through checkout and leaving. If caught, they'd blame Costco's suppliers for attempting to smuggle cigs.

My hubby and I had a wedding in my parents back yard. He sang to me as I walked up the aisle - Randy Travis "Forever and Ever Amen". I think the most expensive thing at the wedding was the cake.
Of course, this was 21+ years ago, but we had a really good Justice of the Peace in Texas, who did a really good ceremony.
We had both sides of the family there, and no one objected to the wedding.
After, we had a fun reception and drove Mom's 57 T-Bird down the road with hubby and I sitting on a blanket on the back where you lost the convertible top.
If you spend too much on the wedding, imo, you don't spend enough on the vows.

This has been complete bullshit from the get-go. The house should have produced 40-50 spending bills the first time the Dems abandoned budgeting, which would only fund House priorities -- e.g. one to fund the DoD, one to fund the FBI, one to fund the IRS, one to fund HHS -- and tossed 'em over the wall to the Senate. The Senate can then try to piggyback additional things onto each one (e.g. "DoD + Obamacare", "FBI + DoJ", "IRS + TSA", "HHS + DoL"), or fiddle with 'em. If piggybacked, drop 'em like a hot rock and send 'em another vanilla version -- if fiddled, go to conference. It would be extremely difficult to sustain the current "shut down the government" bullshit narrative if 27 of 47 bills had already passed through the meatgrinder and become law. Also, if you release five such bills every three days, it'd be really tough to push "but you didn't fund Obamacare!!!" in the media, because you could correctly state that you were working on it. In the end, the Dems couldn't claim you were abandoning troops in the field unless they'd voted to do so; the Dems couldn't claim you were defaulting on the debt unless they'd voted to do so; the Dems couldn't claim that Food Stamps were being eviscerated unless they'd voted to do so.....and all the stuff that makes Dems happy was still being discussed in conference, without a dime of public money appropriated to it......

Unfortunately, we have a "political class" that can wear different hats but always works to the same goal -- to enhance the role of political decisions over citizens' lives.

367 Just watched "The Siege" again. Third time.

I think Bruce Willis's part was tacked-on. Most of the movie was great; a serious look at how Islamic terror would look in New York if it were run by a Hizbollah-type organisation. But then Willis shows up halfway through and imposes martial-law, and badly.

This part looks like it was spliced in, probably because some Hollywood suits worried that the movie was getting to be too un-PC (which it is).

368 The people who don't like what Cruz is doing say they will fight when they have the votes they need.

Of course they will never get those votes. They won't get them because they won't fight for them.

And even if they had them they would not use them because they are afraid if they use them they might lose them in later elections.

All of their thinking is created and molded and guided by fear.

Except for the liars. They are not afraid. They just lie by nature or for a paycheck.

GOP has become a bunch of eunuchs. I think Levin said that this trend started with Bush 41 and his cronies. We keep putting these moderates up for election this party will go extinct, and will so deservedly.

No amount of brand torching is going to change that.

399 349 338- NWCon- thanks for elaborating on my point amigo. That is what it is, the sort of half assed plays that Medved endorses. The bullshit of making nice with the dems when they would just kick us in the balls when they had a chance. Someone on here said it best about the Cruz fillibuster- it is SOMETHING. Someone is taking a fucking stand, even if it means going down in a blaze, at least we're doing something instead of wringing our hands and trying to stay above the fray of partisan politics. fuck that. lets actually fight the liberals on their own terms, with their own rules.

Posted by: Secret Squirrel at September 28, 2013 12:54 AM (0SmH0)

Medved is especially bad when he tries to blur the lines all the time by saying things like "McCain is a conservative." If Medved had a single clue, he would see McCain for the lying democrat that he is.

That is also why Tom Coburn pisses me off. He gets all butthurt about Ted Cruz's tactics making him look bad because "this is not the time." But the time that Coburn is looking for and apparently every other Senate Republican member of the "Leadership" is a filibuster proof and veto proof Republican majority.

Except they also want to play nice with Nancy Pelosi and Reid. Because she is a nice person IN PERSON, right Coburn?

The next day you decide to take her up on her offer, so you go over to her house and the two of you start having wild sex. Right in the middle, she dies. But you're not finished yet. Do you finish? 409 This has been complete bullshit from the get-go.

Posted by: cthulhu at September 28, 2013 01:06 AM (T1005)

Also a very truthful film about the subject was the Kingdom, based on the 2003-2004 attacks in Arabia, they show exactly how much we are loathed over there, they had to pull a macguffin ending,

on other Bills." It's one of the few places where the bicameral legislature is split on duties. Just think of what a "fully-operational battle station House" could do....

How 'bout bill #37 of 50 bills total, and I'll pick on the EPA. Let's say that their 2013 outlays were $14.7B and the government's total tax revenues were $1.47T, and that the single tax rate was 22% -- the House could drop something like: "The House levies a tax on incomes of 0.22% to be used for funding the EPA, with the proviso that carbon dioxide not be considered a pollutant."

This leaves the Senate in the position of (a) not considering it -- ok, the entire EPA goes foom....good riddance! and the burden on American taxpayers drops as well. (b) trying to add something else to it -- ok, the entire EPA goes foom....good riddance! and the burden on American taxpayers drops as well. or (c) trying to change the subject.

456 I love these kind of moral dilemma questions.

Here's a set of dilemmas I came up with many years ago and for which I never get a satisfactory answer:

--------------------------------

You and 19 other people are on a lifeboat after your ship sinks in the middle of the ocean. The lifeboat is so overloaded that the edges are already at the water line and if you take on even five more pounds you will sink. You figure that if all the survivors cooperate, you all might have just enough energy to paddle to an island 100 miles away.

As you paddle, you unexpectedly come across one more survivor who has been treading water the whole time. "Help me!" he says. "Let me on board!"

"We can't," you reply. "We're already at maximum capacity. If we let one more person on board -- if you even grab the side of the boat -- we'll sink and we'll ALL drown."

With me so far? That's the basic setup. Now come the complications:

Dilemma 1:

The guy in the water points to one of the lifeboat passengers and says, "Hey, that guy in the back is a notorious murder and rapist who escaped from the brig when the boat sank! I'm more worthy than him!" True enough, everyone turns to look and the guy in the back is a notorious murderer and rapist that you all recognize from news reports. What do you do? Push him into the water and lift up the dog-paddling survivor?

Dilemma #2:

The person in the water is not a guy, but a women, who declares, "I'm nine months pregnant! If you save me instead of someone else already in the boat, you get a two-fer since you'll be saving my baby too!" Do you "sacrifice" someone to save the woman?

Dilemma #3:

Prior to encountering the survivor in the water, one of the passengers over the hours revealed himself to be a complete asshole -- he refused to paddle, he stole other people's rations, he rocked the boat just for laughs, and in general acted like a royal jerk. Then when you encounter the dog-paddling survivor you notice that he is polite, self-effacing and heroic, and instead of demanding to be let into the boat, he says, "I see there is no room for me, and I am thus doomed. So, in my final minutes, I will grab the rope and tow your lifeboat toward the island with all the swimming strength I can muster, and die nobly sacrificing myself so you all may live!" What do yo do? Push the jerk in the water, and pull the hero aboard? Or not?

Etc. etc. etc. The permutations are many. For some reason, no matter what scenario I concoct (and there are dozens in addition to the three above), I can never get a serious or solid answer out of anyone.

Take turns being in the water, and each person in the water helps push the boat by kicking their feet and propulsing the boat forward. Heck have more than one do it and you increase the potential propulsion even more. Thus you will have increased the chance that everyone lives from barely to more than that.

You're thinking too much in terms of "command and control" and not enough about community. If your lifeboat could hold 24 people (I know I'm expanding it past 19, but it makes the math work better), you could add another person if everyone in the boat spent one hour/day in the water kicking alongside.....which, in a journey of 100 miles, might actually help. Certainly, the person kicking alongside wouldn't be comfortable, and would be at-risk of being chomped by a shark, but they could also be saved and wouldn't burden the boat much.

If there were two extra people, then everyone on the boat could take a 2-hour stint kicking alongside (actually slightly less because the 25th and 26th persons would take a turn). As you added peeps, you'd eventually turn into a giant raft of shark-bait humanity with a lifeboat in the middle, but that's only if you ran into a whole lot of survivors.

Good try at a solution.

Here's a "solution" I just thought of to thwart my own dilemma!:

Take the lightest/smallest person in the boat, and stick him/her out on one of the oars in front of the bow -- as shark bait. When a Great White comes along to take a chomp, you lasso the Great White with your one piece of rope and then have it pull your boat forward all the way to the island as it fruitlessly strives to reach the bait-person -- like in the old cartoons of tempting a mule forward with a carrot forever dangling in front of its mouth.

This scenario works even better if you yell "YEE-haw!" as the shark pulls you along.

If the murderer and jerk are obama supporters, they automatically thrown into water. No vote because a murderer would not wait until the tally is counted to act. If you can get seven strangers to agree on identification of someone, you probably have the guy, plus, he could be intimidating the other seven who believe it is mistaken identity. He has 15 minutes to prove he is not a murderer, straight up guilty until proven innocent. You cannot have that hanging over your heads wondering if you'll wake up in the morning.

If someone is stealing they get thrown overboard, period.

our first exercise was to read about a similar boat scenario and
make decisions about who and in what order to give the heave ho. one of
the occupants was a black gang member with a know history of violence.
nearly everyone selected to heave him first.

It is well-documented that Zombie is an asian female....as well as being a brilliant photojournalist, on a variety of elitist guest-lists, and a writer of snark with a fifth-degree black belt. I'm proud and happy that she's also a moron who actually attends the ONT, unlike the ewok-in-chief.

There was a big rebroadcast on SF's PBS stations in the '80s, which led to me purchasing the set on DVD. It really stands up to the passage of time because it was all very mental in the first place......except for the last episode, that is kitschy camp surrealism gone apeshit.

596 474 Dilemma 1 push murderer in the water

Dilemma 2 don't know what I would do there

Dilemma 3 push jerk in the water
Posted by: NWConservative

Most direct answer yet, in 2 out of 3 at least.

But what if it's more of a non-unanimous judgment call? What if seven people recognize the murder, seven people are convinced it's a case of mistaken identity, and six people are undecided? Do you take a vote before pushing him in? What if the guy is a jerk to half the passengers, but somehow charms the other half? Who decides whether or not to push him in?
Posted by: zombie at September 28, 2013 02:05 AM (+cx5n)

Problem with number 3s answer is that the guy in the water would refuse to get in. I think you are also trying to get too deep into it for it to be a moral question. Especially as you keep trying to add more to your initial issue. You have to approach as the decision being yours or the final option being up to you. To deal with what you are now suggesting you would need that many people to tackle the problem.

Asian is baked into the cookie, IMHO. If I were to meet her and learn that her name was "Nguyen" or "Park" or "Chin" or "magrapathi", I'd try like hell to not leak anything about which "asian" might apply -- and "asian" doesn't say much around here.

As someone who lives in the Bay Area, however, I know very well how deep is the weird -- and Zombie is doing an excellent job of documenting it.

On a more serious level -- gender is out there, race is "asian" which -- if you're in the SF Bay area, means roughly 1/3 of the population in a variety of very distinct groups; orientation.....er....you despise the Folsom Street Faire, but that doesn't reveal a lot; age -- I'd guess 30-60, because you've got the wisdom but can blend in with youthful idiots; wittiness -- in print it's 10 out of 10.....but blending in with folks, I suspect you can hide your light under a basket; attractiveness -- you're an 'ette!!!!!! YOU'RE GORGEOUS!!!!!! You sexy beast, you!!!!!

So you're both hidden and exposed at the same time.....but not too exposed.....(I hope).

Once my Better Half is back from North Carolina, we could arrange a lunch date....because she's heard me say pretty much the same thing about you and would probably be curious. We'd need a contact number that was slightly less fake, however.

One day, I might have the balls to totally "be Breitbart" myself....until that day, Zombie and O'Keefe keep showing me how it's done....

Did I ever say I play fair? Always assume that any link I post is NSFS (Not Safe For Sanity -- just like a Lovecraft vision).

We have a sort-of mutual admiration society.

651 The real tragedy, of course, is that "zombie" is not an individual but rather a collective group-pseudonym for a loosely organized team of photographers. How else could "I" blend in both at a SlutWalk and and the Up Your Alley Fair? How could "I" one night run down the street with a group of anarchists smashing up windows and then a short time later charm my way into a cocktail reception with the General Secretary of the United Nations (links upon request)? Etc.? I was presentable enough for the Secret Service to allow me to just walk up and shake Obama's hand, and repulsive enough to mix unnoticed at an Occupy camp (again, links upon request). No one person can do all that. Sadly, "I" am just an immensely obese couch potato who writes the captions after the multifarious "zombie"s email me the photos -- in truth, I haven't left my house in years.

You have just drastically increased your internet bill. You'd best be reserving "zombiecollective.com" and "thezombiecollective.com" ASAP.

655 "This has been complete bullshit from the get-go. The
house should have produced 40-50 spending bills the first time the Dems
abandoned budgeting, which would only fund House priorities -- e.g. one
to fund the DoD, one to fund the FBI, one to fund the IRS, one to fund
HHS -- and tossed 'em over the wall to the Senate. The Senate can then
try to piggyback additional things onto each one (e.g. "DoD +
Obamacare", "FBI + DoJ", "IRS + TSA", "HHS + DoL"), or fiddle with 'em.
If piggybacked, drop 'em like a hot rock and send 'em another vanilla
version -- if fiddled, go to conference. It would be extremely difficult
to sustain the current "shut down the government" bullshit narrative if
27 of 47 bills had already passed through the meatgrinder and become
law. Also, if you release five such bills every three days, it'd be
really tough to push "but you didn't fund Obamacare!!!" in the media,
because you could correctly state that you were working on it. In the
end, the Dems couldn't claim you were abandoning troops in the field
unless they'd voted to do so; the Dems couldn't claim you were
defaulting on the debt unless they'd voted to do so; the Dems couldn't
claim that Food Stamps were being eviscerated unless they'd voted to do
so.....and all the stuff that makes Dems happy was still being discussed
in conference, without a dime of public money appropriated to it......

Unfortunately,
we have a "political class" that can wear different hats but always
works to the same goal -- to enhance the role of political decisions
over citizens' lives.

Posted by: cthulhu at September 28, 2013 01:06 AM (T1005)"

That would require that the Republican Party actually be an opposition political party instead of a bunch of comfortable slugs who are happy to play the role of Washington Generals and never win. The GOP of today is not an opposition party. They are merely a conduit to transfer money from naive donors into the pockets of millionaire political consultants.

Thank you for your thoughts.

I'm nearly 50 and I should be stronger.

I dread daylight because I have to crush this crying child I've indulged all night, and become stoic and responsible again. It is hard. It is so very hard.

667 Invictous, so sorry man. I did that in 2001 with my dad. I wanted to be alone with him. I saw the man he was throughout my life as he slipped away. I know that I will never meet a more honest, humane, tough, Christian man in this life. Thinking of your mom's example will get you through the days ahead.

668 Because the last election turned me into a sour old cynic, I've learned to predict what will actually happen by referring to what conservatives say will happen. See for instance, predictions of the Senate vote for cloture and for stripping the defunding language from the CR. Conservatives predicted some, if not many, Democrats would feel safe to go against their leadership, given the unpopularity of Obamacare. What really happened? Not a single Democrat did.

So my prediction is that the youth will sign up in droves just because Obama asked them to.

The only way to stop this beast will be to rip it out root and branch when and if we ever get control of both White House and Congress again.
