Westgate terrorists used pre-cached weapons

They rented a shop at the mall prior to the attack.

The militants who led the attack on a Kenyan mall hired a shop there in the weeks leading up to the siege, senior security sources have told the BBC.

This gave them access to service lifts at Westgate enabling them to stockpile weapons and ammunition.

Having pre-positioned weapons they were able to re-arm quickly and repel the security forces.

They're not only thinking smaller, they're thinking smarter. This could be a real problem. Undoubtedly this scheme will be replicated in the future and would work with high security office buildings as well as malls.

Imagine the effort involved in searching everything that came into a mall or office building through the service entrances. Boxed store product, cases of bung wrap, cases of bags, cases of floor cleaner/wax etc. Even then, terrorists could easily substitute liquid explosives/incendiaries for any bottled service supplies or bulk food court drinks. The manpower need for that level of security is daunting indeed.

If they were patient enough, they could even build a weapons and explosives cache into a building under construction if they had some guys on the drywall crew. Damn little inspection of construction materials and worker tool boxes and such is done on most commercial projects.

Even supposedly secure sites, like US embassies, are routinely compromised during construction. Remember the embassy we had built in Moscow that was uninhabitable because the Soviets had laced so many bugging devices in during construction that it was impossible to remediate?

18 "They're not only thinking smaller, they're thinking smarter."

The great Japanese military blunder at Pearl Harbor was not hitting the spare parts depots, the repair shops, and the POL farms (petroleum, oil and lubricants).

Chester Nimitz later said that if the Japanese had done that, the outcome of the naval war in the Pacific would have been very different.

Likewise with terrorism. Amateurs attack high profile targets like embassies. Professionals go after low profile logistical targets like infrastructure. And what's scary is that as the jihadis become more disciplined and professional, they may well start to go after infrastructure, which is a frighteningly soft underbelly in most countries. Including the United States.

Gordon Liddy wrote a speculative fiction piece a few years ago about an America that had just had its logistic and infrastructural sinews cut by well planned terror attacks just as a long hard winter was about to set in. Transport and power grids in total disarray. NOT a pretty picture.

38 I highly recommend a book called The Weapon by Michael Z. Williamson. It tells the story of how black ops teams cause massive casualties in major cities in a future where the UN has become a worldwide government and is at war with their homeworld (which they call "Freehold" informally; this book is a companion to the book Freehold by the same author.)

Despite a complete ban on effective weapons in the hands of ordinary people, the black ops guys manage to put together an effective arsenal and cause all sorts of chaos.

Here's the key point that reminded me of this: the future UN government requires companies to spy on their customers, so they bought a storage rental business. Then they stored all their stuff, and sent reports to the government that showed nothing suspicious.

During the actual attacks, they caused serious mayhem by doing things like putting bombs inside ventilation systems in high-rise buildings, causing chain-reaction car crashes, etc. They shot a few people but that paled compared to the other stuff.

It occurs to me that the fictional future UN government would surely call them "terrorists" and that the word might actually apply. They wanted the people, who didn't care about the war, to start caring. In the end, it did work: the UN recalled all its soldiers to do disaster recovery back at home, as the Earth was sufficiently messed up that they preferred to stop attacking Freehold.

Despite the "terrorist" aspect, you are cheering for these guys; the UN attacked their homeworld, specifically to eradicate their whole way of life, and caused horrific casualties.

55 Kenya

It is illegal in Kenya to own any type of firearm without a valid gun ownership license as spelled out under the Firearms Act (Cap. 114) Laws of Kenya. Anyone who is 12 years or older can apply to privately own a gun. However, such persons must provide in writing to the Chief Licensing Officer (CLO) stating genuine reason(s) for their need to privately own and carry a firearm. It remains at the discretion of the CLO to make a decision to award, deny or revoke a gun ownership license based on the reason(s) given. Anyone seeking to hold a gun license must pass the most stringent of background checks that probes into their past and present criminal, mental health and well as domestic violence records. Failure to pass one of these checks automatically bars one from being permitted to own a firearm. These checks are regularly repeated and must be continually passed for anyone to continue holding the gun license. Failure to pass any of these checks at any stage, means an automatic and immediate revocation of the issued license. Once licensed to own a gun, no permit is required in order to carry around a concealed firearm.

90 It is illegal in Kenya to own any type of firearm without a valid gun
ownership license as spelled out under the Firearms Act (Cap. 114) Laws

93 Damnit, where is the terra-forming, faster-than-light spacecraft propulsion and civilization-sized spacecraft building capability I was promised in all that 1970s Science Fiction I used to read?!?!?!?

Can't just kill 1.2 billion lunatic muslims (though the thought does keep a lot of people warm at night), so it would be nice to have the option of just shipping all of them to a brand spankin' new planet to occupy, sufficiently far away that we don't need to worry about fighting them for another 1400 years, as we have for the last 1400. It isn't like the fuckers could possibly come back here on spacecraft they built themselves.

The only way there will ever be peace on this Earth is if the bitter adherents of the Devil's Religion are permanently and completely separated from the rest of the population. Sorry, it is just true. The history of the last 14 centuries proves it, as does this latest attack in Africa.

Sure, the suck at it. But every failure will just be used as an argument for even more surveillance.

Here's the future. You know how the credit card companies monitor every transaction in real-term looking for anomalies and they call you if, say, your card buys $5k of bung wrap in Vegas and you live in Tampa?

Just think of that -- but applied to everything. Car movements, phone calls, web usage, utility bills, etc, etc. Anything and everything that's possible to measure about people.

Measure and track everyone to find the anomalies that reveal the .01% who are bad guys.

A coordinated attack of this type takes planning, supply and coordination. That might have a high probability of success in Kenya (where, by the way they ignored INTEL on the planning), but is much lower probability here given the op risk factors. I don't care what the tabloid say.

A "lone wolf" shootout has the highest success factor given the unknowns and low profile risk factors- which is why it is worried about. Oh and the best defense against that attack? Armed citizens in the vicinity who can disrupt or stop the attackers.

The most dangerous piece of tripe this Administration floats is the war is somehow over. That disarms the average Joe and makes people think in different terms. Suddenly a backpack on the ground at the Boston Marathon, left unattended, is simply a harmless backpack- not a bomb or threat.

As opposed to, say, profiling Muslims.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, anti-discrimination laws have not only destroyed our liberty, they will end up killing us all.

Anti-discrimination laws put an end to Jim Crow, which was good and right. Government has no business discriminating for or against groups of citizens. We're all supposed to be equal before the law.

(Don't even get me started on affirmative action laws.)

But there is absolutely nothing wrong with private discrimination, and it should be completely legal. Business owners should have the right to choose whether or not to refuse service, based on any criteria they want.

186 The Airport in Minneapolis is staffed almost exclusively by Somalis. Maybe 80% or more... other than the airline counters. I don't think the politicians in Minnesota really thought this whole "Lets bring all of these Somalis over here" thing real

I doubt they went out of their way to object, but it wasn't up to MN politicians. We can thank the feds for shipping them here.
***************

And they're still bringing them in by the planeloads. Not just Somali Muslims, but also Iraqi and Afghani and Pakistani Muslims. This is on top of all the Bosnian and Chechnyan Muslims they brought in back in the 90's.

Because who makes better Americans than foreign Muslims who despise everything we stand for? Who don't believe in separation of church and state, don't believe in freedom of religion, don't believe in free speech, don't believe in the legal equality of men and women (or homsexuals), don't believe in free markets, etc. -- and those are the so-called "good" Muslims (i.e., they ones who aren't actively training to murder us in terrorist training camps).

Celebrate diversity! Especially when it despises you and everything you stand for, and even when it wants to torture, rape, maim, and kill you and your children!

Finally, start deporting every deportable person from the offending nation or of that offending nationality. And cut off any visas from anyone from that nation for at least five years.

So if they are Pakistani, Peshawar is gone. No Pakistani is getting a U.S. visa. All illegal Pakistanis in the U.S. are booted and any family/friends of the Pakistani terrorists are in jail indefinitely until they are proven innocent or work with the USG to find the rest of the cell.

No, it'll be at your workplace. And you'll look at your mortgage and at your wife and kids, and you'll meekly go to the mandatory sensitivity training, and you'll accept you'll never ever get promoted again.

I haven't been to the 'mandatory sensitivity training', but I've been to the annual 'harassment training' that they give to everyone, and you know what? I took it like a Spartan ten-year-old, just like everyone else in my office did.

201 Like Minneapolis, the Columbus Airport (Port Columbus) has a lot of Somalis on the staff, driving shuttle buses, and the like.

Prior to 9/11, they also ran security. And they did for a little while afterward. As individuals, they seem like nice enough guys, but they really bother me.

A nice liberal teacher lady that lives down the street notices. She has done English teaching to foreign born kids. She was teaching a class of kids from Ghana, and she said they were sweet and nice and eager to learn, because their parents had made a commitment to become Americans.

She was then teaching a class of Somalis, and they pretty much told her that as a white Christian, she was going to Hell. She said they expect to go back to Somalia some day. I think they think they are going to take over some day.
I would hasten that day that the go back, if it were up to me.

You are assuming I work (I only work in my gardens), that I have a mortgage (that was payed off in 1983), my wife doesn't work and packs a 380 ACP whenever she steps out of the house, and my children are long gone and are prepared for SHTF. I carry a SW 65 with a 3 inch barrel 24/365 unless I'm asleep in which case its on my bed stand and there is a Winchester Defender 12 gauge propped up in the corner within easy reach. And, you will never approach my country home unannounced because one of the mutts will give the alarm.

I am vigilant 24/365 until I am unable and that is not now. So no, I will not go meekly. I've lived a good life and I will not assume that I can protect my children and grandchildren from the chambers by going meekly. You decide how you live your life, I decided long ago how I live mine. BTW, you may not find it healthy to knock on my door unannounced.

Several years ago I got a chance to discuss the "Honey Pot Theory"* with an SF guy with several tours downrange already.

206 but that someone in the mall knew and should also be charged.

I'm unconvinced someone at the mall had to know. If you rent a shop, you're gonna spend several weeks with it boarded up while "remodeling" and fitting it out for the grand opening.

Mall staff isn't much interested in what's going on behind that plywood, other than are you going to be opening on time and helping to drive customer traffic.

That "remodeling" does however give you access to mall structural, mechanical, and electrical plans, which could prove quite useful.

207 The ONLY hope I have for this not happening in America is the Second Amendment. Did you see the huge help that one guy was with a handgun in Kenya? Well, actually, now it's two guys: one was British Special Forces and the other was a Muslim (he was helping the good guys, guess he's one of those rare "moderates"), but all they had was one handgun each and they saved many people. In America, there's lots more armed. Plus, one armed American ALREADY stopped a mall massacre back in December in Oregon, iirc. I think that's why it hasn't happened here yet; but schools, theatres, and Starbucks are gun-free zones so...

mention the solid wall of Middle Eastern taxi drivers.

Diversity
has effectively invited the termites right into the infrastructure. The
fact that nothing like this mall attack has happened here yet is a
freakin miracle in my opinion.

Beslan was an alternate target of opportunity, so wasn't prepared, but a new stadium in Grozniy was pre-loaded with explosives during construction, right under the reviewing stand. The Chechens decapitated the pro-Moscow quisling regime during the opening formalities. At the time, I considered it good news.
