Spaced-Out Challenge: Comet ISON Update

CometISONHSTNASAMay2013.jpg

As the media and astronomy buffs continue to fuel the hype (but at least now with an asterisk warning of disappointment), let's look at how Comet ISON is behaving as of late and a rough outline of when you can start hunting it down. Today's edition is a bit abbreviated, as I'm working on a larger beginner's guide to the Fall Sky for next weekend.
Read on.

Comet ISON (more formally C/2012 S1) was initially discovered just under a year ago by Vitali Nevski and Artyom Novichonok using the International Scientific Optical Network (hence it's common name) in Russia. When it's initial trajectory and observations were reviewed, some jumped the gun and hinted it could be the "Comet of the Century." This is too bad, as comets are extremely unpredictable: even right now, just ten weeks before it dives within a million miles from the surface of the sun, there is no way to tell if ISON is going to dazzle or disappoint.

So here is what we know about ISON. Amateur observations have begun on the Comet, with it's magnitude currently between +11.5 and +12. It has a nucleus about 3 miles across. Theoretically, using Stellarium or other software, you can hunt it down with a telescope of at least 8" aperture. One dedicated amateur, Wes Stone, did just that last Tuesday, and submitted this rough sketch to the Cloudy Nights ISON thread:

CometISONsketch.jpg

Its low proximity to the horizon and faintness makes it a rough object to confidently locate in the eyepiece right now, so many have stuck with the imaging route to get their first glimpse, like this stacked image by astrophotographer John Wunderlin taken Friday morning:

CometISONStackedImages.jpg

NASA plans to aim it's Mars Reconnaissance Observer at ISON when it passes close by the red planet October 1st, it's STEREO spacecraft around October 10th, and SOHO on November 27th. Amateur observers and imagers are encouraged to submit their observations here.

Ok enough excuses, CAC. When CAN I see it?
Getting right to the point, an amateur using ablog2.mu.nulescope or very large binocular will be able to catch it by the beginning of October. Any binocular owner should be able to snag this icy phantom by the middle of October. It should continue to brighten as it nears it's perihelion (closest approach to the sun) November 28th, brightening into naked eye view from very dark locations as early as late October, the dark sky sites listed in the directory by the first week of November, and most suburban skies by the final days before perihelion and the first week of December. This is all subject to change of course. It could melt away to nothing, break up, or maybe, just maybe, dazzle everyone with a working pair of eyes right after Thanksgiving. Only time will tell.

Anyways, that's it for this week's short edition. All of the previous threads, including the buyer's guide, urban astronomy tips, and dark sky directory, can be found here. Next week we review the major constellations and stars for Fall, and perhaps a brief discussion of Paul Bogard's excellent work on the vanishing darkness, The End of Night. Until then, clear skies to you and keep looking up!

48 I'm considering volunteering to run a STEM class at the school where my wife teaches -- partly because I love Science and partly because of Al the Gore. Thought it might be fun to run an anti-anthropogenic global warming lesson or three, so I've been compiling a list of variables/cycles in the earth, moon, and the sun that would have an effect on the planets temperature. Holy shit, the more of them I find, the more I discover. There are a shit-load of them. The more research I do, the more I find. Al Gore can stick to one variable -- CO2, which might be why he got a 'D' in earth science. Here's a couple more I found today:

Nutation 18.6 year cycle -- seems to coincide with the current cooling cycle
Milankovitch cycles - scary stuff -- seems to indicate we're all gonna freeze to death pretty soon -- and by 'pretty soon' I mean over thousands of years -- especially if you don't drink Moochelles 'energy' drink which is water, total calories zero. But anyway, pull quote...

"Ignoring anthropogenic and other possible sources of variation acting at frequencies higher than one cycle per 19,000 years, this model predicts that the long-term cooling trend that began some 6,000 years ago will continue for the next 23,000 years."

Might be time to invest in wool blankets. Or a partner with sexual characteristics of a highly stimulating nature.

No such luck.

I've done a fair amount of business with seniors and in my view this is the norm, not the exception. And I don't think it has anything to do with dementia, or anything like that.

People just reach an age where they have put up with enough crap in life that they no longer care what others think when they speak their mind.

I've done a fair amount of business with seniors and in my view this is the norm, not the exception. And I don't think it has anything to do with dementia, or anything like that.

They not only say, they also act out. Had an older gent a couple years ago try to assault my wife with a trash can. It was, according to him, on his side of the property line....and while cussing at my wife, picked the can up, and threw it at her. My wife was trying to talk to him, while holding the baby, and with three tiny boys hiding behind her. (Our foster kids)

Older gent or not, I was out the door, and in his face in seconds. Eldest son came barreling out of the door seconds behind me, (He's a Marine now).

Older gent learned to keep his distance, and hasn't said a word, or even looked at us since.

We are all very frustrated at what's going on in the world and at all the shit Obama is getting away with.

Most come here to vent and commiserate with like-minded people. We keep sane knowing that others feel and think the same way.

So when Ace posts fluff and nonsense while Obama is literally destroying our republic, it's only natural for the toming to rub people the wrong way.

But Ace doesn't know Miss Marple like we do because Ace isnt in the threads as much. If Missarple didnt like Ace and his blog, she wouldn't be here for a few hourse every single day

Any comet is a good comet!

Agreed. There's some evidence that suggests we're seeing too many comets of late. Over the last several thousand years, lots of new comets have visited the inner solar system, as if something is perturbing what should be stable orbits around the sun.

We're ramping up toward the next mass extinction event now, (which occur app every 62 million years)...or we're right in the middle of it.

It doesn't have to be instantaneous...twenty million years from now the fossil record will show this extinction event as a single event, where in reality the event spans a few hundred thousand years. Today could be as exciting as an extinction event gets, (on average...there's always the chance Earth gets smacked by the galactic golden bullet again).

Twenty million years from now, a sentient descendant of our modern cockroach is going to scrabble away at a road cut with it's hairy exoskeletal fore-limb, and open it's mouth parts in a wide insectile grin, and inform the audience that the gray smudge between layers of rock he's pointing at represent the end of the dinosaurs...those weird mammalian life forms that dominated the planet, and the birth of the sentient insect world.

He'll probably start talking about global warming at that point, and how it's imperative that roachkind do something right now, immediately, before it's all too late.

179 Just built a jig out of wood to hold my HTC flyer tablet running SkEye to the new dob8. Velcro mount and a counterweight. Hopefully, I will now have a fighting chance of figuring out what some of those stars names are now. I can find and name 3 constellations now.

Friday night was superclear in MN. Saw the moon for the first time way up close. Wow.

I love observing the moon....especially when it's crescent. The mountains, and crater rims stand out due to lengthened shadows. The little ones enjoy looking at it too, and generally don't believe me when I tell them we sent men there once.

181 179 dob modifications are limitless. The program has a night view option I take it?

Eventually you might consider an equatorial platform- it will give your dob motorized tracking. Plus you just rest the scope atop it.

Glad to hear your first view of the moon was stunning. Just wait until you see the Veil or the Orion Nebula.

182 Back to the topic. What is your location, roughly speaking?
I'm sitting down, facing forward.

183 OT, but Meade has a good deal on an f/11.7 60mm refractor. $25.00. Model is NG-60SM. Must not have sold well, as list price is $99, and Amazon sells them for $90. I got one, and it's a typical beginner scope. Comes with 2 eyepieces MH25 and MH9, which are Huygens. They are coated and focal lengths are suitable for the 'scope. Finder is a red dot.

Field of view in the supplied eyepieces is a bit cramped, as one would expect, but the optical quality is very good, for a $90 scope: Chromatic aberration, (false color), is close to none. I tested this by observing the moon. The image was sharp and clear.

Note: The value here, for $25.00, is if you have some Kellner, or Plossl eyepieces. Otherwise the Orion Observer 60, with 2 Kellner's, for $70.00 is probably a better deal.

184 CAC- I can track it down but you seen sky positions for it when it's closer to perihelion? Low horizon is always a challenge in Dallas due to the light dome and general pollution. I can do magnitude 9 max on something near zenith with the 14" Dob. At its current 11 or 12 mag, I'd have to slap on the Canon EOS and just hope I have focus and exposure set right.

185 It looks like ISON will be hanging around close to Mars in the morning sky until mid-October. Interesting.

186 #185 thanks rickl. I was looking up projections and I'm not real optimistic. Low horizon shots before sunrise will be a real challenge from where I'm at in Dallas. Looks like it climbs higher in December but it will also be fading, too. PANSTARRS was a lot more cooperative.
