Quick Update on Betsy Karasik, The Woman the Washington Post Humiliated By Publishing Her Idiotic Babblings In Order to Troll for Outrage-Clicks

Someone pointed out to me her website-- she quit being a lawyer in order to become a painter.

If you don't remember Betsy, she embarrassed herself by fulminating at the Washington Post that statutory rape by teachers of minor children was no big deal and no one dies so why are you being such big meanies about Love, anyway?

Below, most of her page explaining her Art.

At various points in the text, I will intersperse a picture of one of her actual, real, honest-to-goodness paintings.

In 1998 I walked away from a "successful" career as a litigator in order to paint.

Also walked away from a "successful" understanding of the proper use of quotations marks.

Nah I get it, whatever, she's trying to say that's what "Society" deems "successful."

But I sorta don't think she was that successful at it, or even that "successful."

I work at my Dupont Circle home/studio in Washington, D.C., in the company of three cats and, on occasion, the elusive and multi-talented EMT, musician and environmentalist, Bob Fener. I am largely self-taught, although I have studied with several very gifted Washington area artists including Annette Polan (portraiture), Patrick Kirwin (realism and illusion), and Mary del Popolo (color).

Like most artists, I paint because I have to; the paintings are lined up inside my head demanding to be realized.

The Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca reportedly said that there are three elements favoring the divine spark of inspiration: demonic irrationality, proximity to nature, and an awareness of death.

For me, the magic of painting is to enter a realm unbound by everyday rules and conventions...

BetsyKarasikcatpainting.jpg

... yet inspired by the mystery and beauty of nature. My painting is informed by the nostalgia and even absurdity of the moment - the consciousness that all existence is flux.

BetsyKarasikcatpainting.jpg
"Consciousness in Flux, with Siamese Cat,"
also available in Tabby or Manx

...

Artists are told that they must paint as if they had an eternity, and also as if each day were their last.

aka "The Specter of Death Glanced Backwards and Licked Its Back,"

Somewhere in the tension between those poles, there is a state of enchantment where the artist, if she is fortunate, is allowed to briefly visit, and maybe even hike around a bit and have a snack.

Okay, I omitted a part in there where she cops to finding inspiration in "the grace of a cat." No really? I wouldn't have known unless you told me.

In fairness, if you check her site, she is, and I can't believe I'm going to say this, not entirely untalented.

I wanted her to be much much worse than she actually is.

So, I guess she made a "successful" career change from something she wasn't suited for, law and thinking, and something she was, cat paintings.

So maybe stop writing Wa Po op-eds, Ms. Karasik, and stick to your strengths.

Update: The Lost Masterworks of Betsy Karasik. Below, a masterpiece hitherto-believed to be lost, originally banned in 19 countries when it first exploded onto the art scene.

Thank to rickl for unearthing that treasure.

Update: Besty Karasik's Experimental Period. After wowing the world with her paintings of cats, flowers, cats, and pumpkins, Betsy Karasik entered a period of florid, phantasmagorical experimentation which continues to baffle, shock, and delight the world.

11 Obama's war on white women continues.

Police: 2 Women Gang Raped By Juveniles In Wilmington Park
Suspects Range In Age From 12 To 17-Years-Old

Anyone care to take a "wild guess" what race the gang rapists are? Whose sons they look like?

Well isn't this a surprise. More Sons of Obama. Well knock me over with a feather.

Police say two women, ages 32 and 24, were reportedly attacked and sexually assaulted by a group of 10 to 12 black male juveniles in Kosciuszko Park at about 6:54 p.m. Thursday. According to police, the suspects, who range in age from 12 to 17-years-old, remain on the loose.

Of course, this is just yet another of those "isolated incidents", as the hotair web site calls them, that in no way is part of any kind of pattern and it's best just to not talk about it.

she lives in DuPont Circle. Not cheap. She wasn't a lawyer long enough to make big money. She said her "partner", her boyfriend the EMT, has a "farm" in VA.

I have met these types. Someone else, prolly Daddy, made a lot of money at one time. They are subsidizing her. Same with her "partner". The "farm" in VA is really a plot of land with a house, a dog, a couple of horses and maybe, maybe some chickens. It is not a "farm" anymore than my backyard is.

She never married, she never had kids. That is why she is OK with teachers sexing 14 year old students. She says she and her friends had "relationships" with their teachers, yet makes no connection between those early sexual experiences and her current life of perpetual narcissistic adolescence.

Today, she makes a living as a painter and takes advantage of the time her new career path has created, which includes spending time with her partner, Bob Fener, at his farm in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Karasik has been commissioned to paint dozens of portraits of clients and their pets.

While Dupont Circle may not seem like the ideal place for an artist who is inspired by nature and animals, Karasik has found the area to be a great catalyst for her paintings. “I get tremendous inspiration from all the beautifully tended gardens with their abundance of flowers, butterflies and ornamental trees… as well as all the dogs in the neighborhood,” she said. She also takes “reference” photos at the dog park on 17th and S NW, her new “happy place.” Reference photos are used as the basis for paintings.

I skimmed her stupid article and decided she was fucked in the head enough for a Bing. I skimmed the Bing page and that was enough to confirm my hunch that she was a lunatic.

As for her talent, she could probably get decent grades in the art program at Kutztown University.

The WaPo hit me with a notice that it was the first of my 20 free articles per month -- so they're definitely hit whoring. I go there probably a max of 20 times per year so screw them.

203 Her paintings are not bold or skilled enough to be anything but attempts at representationalism.

They're putting the color where the color goes to make it look like the thing it is-- but they don't capture light, texture, or have particularly strong composition. They're the work of someone at about a night-school annex level, tolerable illustration but not terribly advanced or dramatic.

288 one thing we're doing that is a little unfair, or at least inconsistent, is that if she was doing abstract paintings, we'd make fun of her for that, but since she's doing representational paintings, we're making fun of her for that.

Not that I feel bad about it.

Just sayin'.

She's not a very good painter and she wants teachers to freely explore the vaginal space of their underage students so I guess it's okay if we're doing a little flippy-flop in our art critiques.

Posted by: ace at August 31, 2013 08:40 PM (/IWYB)

289 I'm cutting her some slack on the cats and dogs. I'm guessing these were commissioned. No one else is paying for her other work except the pet obssessed out there who have no taste. So she has to accept pet portraits so she can call herself "successful."

Posted by: L, elle at August 31, 2013 08:40 PM (0PiQ4)

290 Her paintings look really more like illustrations than fine art. Certainly not for any product I want to buy.

We're afflicted with area art & wine festivals here every weekend. Fantastic, skilled stuff in all sorts of media. But you just look at it, nobody ever buys. You'd make money if you had the wine concession.

389 So the husband of my friend who raises orphaned baby fawns told me a week ago that foxes have killed three fawns they're raising in their yard.

And tonight, one of my neighbors called and asked if we could feed her kitty tomorrow morning, and by the way, there's been a fox spotted on our block.

This afternoon I had twin fawns in our backyard, and they were scared and stomping their little hooves, and staring a something in the trees.

Husband asks me, "Why can't we just kill and eat baby fawns like we do cows, goats, etc?"

I have no answer. Baby fawn?

However, by asking Congress for authorization Obama has raised the possibility of delaying the attack for another week. In other words, there is a good possibility that the United States could launch a massive attack involving many deaths and a lot of property destruction for no particular reason in a Muslim country on September 11.

If he made that an annual event, I might start to like the guy.

447 I came in briefly last night to mention sitting with a "friend" of my husband's at dinner last night.

This guy is from Sweden, supposedly well-off, retired, but my husband has given him some consulting work.

Anyhow, Obama's mug comes up on one of several bar TVs, and the Swede asks the bartender to "take that ass's face down...change to another channel."

I was thrilled.

Then we discovered who he truly is. He began lecturing us on our "military industrial complex," our healthcare, and how it doesn't reach Sweden's, and how he's living here because of Sweden's liberal government worker pension policies.

He pointed out to me a couple he'd introduced us to earlier. The woman looked like a typical N. E. woman, with a crew cut, her husband a wispy guy with a sweater around his shoulders. Our Swedish "friend" informed us that they are Canadian, living here on the high life, thanks to their generous Canadian pension plans.

Then he told us the U. S. sucks.

Rebels admit gas attack result of mishandling chemical weapons Comment ShareShare

In a report that is sure to be considered blockbuster news, the rebels told Dale Gavlak, a reporter who has written for the Associated Press, NPR and BBC, they are responsible for the chemical attack last week.

Gavlak is a Middle Eastern journalist who filed the report about the rebels claiming responsibility on the Mint Press News website, which is affiliated with AP.

In that report allegedly the rebels told him the chemical attack was a result of mishandling chemical weapons.

485 Way late to the party but it must be noted that the anatomy of the cat's paws in Karasik's painting is completely f*cked up. And she can't argue surrealism given that the rest of the cat is pretty much in the realm of realism.

488 She has some skill with color. Without seeing more paintings (which I probably won't bother to do), I can't say what her strengths are in composition, but she's terrible at perspective. That dog painting looks like it was done by a talented middle-schooler.

That's not the worst kittycat picture I ever saw. But I don't think
that's actual art. The criteria for putting that on the wall is whether
the colors complement the drapes and carpet.

OK I am the subject of this entire post and, while some of these comments are pretentious and offensive, many are hilarious and made me snort my coffee. So thanks for the laughs.
If anyone actually cares about what I think about statutory rape, here is a clarification based on my Huffington Post interview:If missing the point were an Olympic event, thispost would be Michael Phelps.Quoting me out of context is one thing, butthis ignores my context and depict me as a victim-blaming rape apologist. Labeling me as "pro-rape" is a facile and intellectually dishonest way to shut down dialogue, much like claiming that anyone who questions mandatory sentencing is promoting crime or that advocates of comprehensive sex education in schools are promoting promiscuity. I wasn't surprised when Glenn Beck slammed me, but I was appalled to see the same reductive tactics and reactionary mindset embraced by journalists who call themselves progressives and feminists.

I was arguing that criminalization is a blunt instrument with unintended consequences and is not always the best way to deter behaviors we deem undesirable. Society learned this during prohibition and is currently grappling with these problems in the context of drug laws and mandatory sentencing. I was simply stating the obvious: sexual activity between students and teachers will continue to occur no matter how hard we try to suppress it with legislation. And some of these situations will include behavior that does not include force, coercion, manipulation, or other conduct that plainly should be subject to criminal laws.

I was suggesting that we could be responding to consensual situations in a more realistic and intelligent manner, and that forcing the student to participate in a criminal prosecution in these cases is likely to unnecessarily amplify the trauma to the student.

Of course, we aren't just talking about the general population, but rather a situation where teachers are in a position of trust and authority over students. That is why I clearly stated that any teacher who has sex with a student, even if the sex is consensual and the student is above the age of consent, should be fired and lose their license. And I have also suggested a higher standard of proof for establishing that student-teacher sex is consensual, perhaps in the form of a rebuttable presumption of non-consent.

Some argue that because of the power differential there can never be meaningful consent in in this context. I disagree and I believe it is tortuous and hypocritical to label all of these situations rape. I do agree that any student-teacher sexual relationship should be subject to very careful scrutiny because of these concerns. I would rather see society devote resources to providing a thorough mental health and/or law enforcement evaluation on a highly individualized basis at this point to determine if there was manipulative or coercive conduct, rather than on indiscriminate prosecutions and repairing psychological harm after the fact.

In her book Harmful to Minors: The Perils of Protecting Children From Sex, (Univ. of Minnesota Press, 2002) Judith Levine states that "[m]any psychologists believe that adults' reactions even to certifiable sexual abuse can exacerbate the situation for the child..." and quotes a report by the National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect stating: "There is often as much harm done to the child by the system's handling of the case as the trauma associated with the abuse."Even my most vocal critics in the victim community concede that the criminal justice system is still rife with ignorance and incompetence, can be a brutal experience for victims, has a long way to go before it adequately supports survivors of abuse, and is not likely to change any time soon.
I strongly believe that forcing a teenager who has engaged in a consensual sexual experience to self-identify as a rape victim sends a hypocritical and damaging message to that individual and to society. I was also arguing that the age of consent is unrealistically high. In the United States it is 18 in many states, and 16 or 17 in others. In most European countries it is between 14 and 16. When I said "not all sexual conduct between underage students and teachers should necessarily be classified as rape" I was referring to consensual sexual activity by teenagers who are underage within the current legal framework, but who would not be underage if legislators lowered the age of consent.

Again, this is not about blaming the victim or promoting sexual activity, but rather realistically tailoring social policies, including how wide a net we wish to cast for criminal prosecutions.

496 PS Since you felt the need to get personal about my legal career, I'll just note that I was A.V. rated until my retirement (the highest peer review rating by Martindale-Hubbell for competence and ethics) with zero blemishes on my record. I represented injured individuals in medical negligence, product liability, civil rights and insurance unfair claims practices cases. It was seeing how much hand-holding I had to do for them due to the stress of the legal proceedings that sensitized me to this issue.
