News: Egypt in Flames as Christian Nuns Paraded at Gunpoint as "Prisoners of War"
Media: Obama's Got a New Puppy

Yup.

HBO runs a show called Veep. A standard plotline in that show would be for the Vice President to get a puppy when her approval rate is falling. There would also be a scene of her staff wargaming out different sorts of puppies appealed to different demographic groups.

I have to think that's basically real.

44 "Without an associated civil society that respects individual dignity and religious liberties, democracy can be a tool to vest a mob with power."

There is a fundamental question when setting up a democratic government: should it be able to easily vote itself into a non-democratic government? In the United States, we answered that with no, and set up a system that will take a long time to overrule.

Too often, international advisors answer that with “yes, that’s what democracy means”.

I disagree with the original article: I think Egypt could have had a functional democracy. But we—and by we, I mean President Obama—forced them into a non-functional one, one that was guaranteed to fail, because it was set up to be an easy-to-quit democracy and then hurried so that the only strong faction available was one that wants it to fail.

48 Here is from Drudge's new topline link-

CAIRO (Reuters) - Until Monday night, Farid Ismail was one of the few Muslim Brotherhood leaders who still answered his phone, even when many of his associates had been arrested or gone underground.
By Tuesday morning Ismail was nowhere to be found after the authorities seized the group's chief, Mohamed Badie, overnight.
The army seems determined to decapitate the Middle East's oldest and arguably most resilient Islamist movement, to prevent it from preparing a political comeback after President Mohamed Mursi, one of its senior leaders, was ousted on July 3.
Badie's arrest means the Brotherhood's most experienced and respected leaders are now behind bars. Others such as Ismail, if he remains free, must now be focused on staying out of jail.
The military's strategy appears clear: remove the top of a pyramid-shaped organisation in hopes that the rest will crumble.

92 At least the press in the late 30's early 40's was nominally pro American.

Some of them were also practically pro-dictator.

“They call him dictator. To the unpatriotic, to the anti-social and anti-civilized, to the lawless, to the bolshevists, he is dictator. To Italy—full of sterling human worth—to Italy, in my judgement, Mussolini is liberator.” —Chicago Daily News

I got it from an old collection of interviews with, basically, foreign dictators; there’s one with Hitler, too. The subtext is that peace is worth tyranny.

You would think people would realize by now, you don’t get both. It’s not like it was a new insight even then.

106 Obama’s Bet On Kerry/ElBaradei Relationship Falls Flat And Hurts American Credibility, As ElBaradei Goes To Austria

It was very clear from the beginning that General Sisi was the man with whom one should be talking, yet the State Department continued to talk with ElBaradei, who was really without any true portfolio in the new regime. He was placed there as a concession, not because anyone having actual power would be listening to him.

Via Fox News:

Secretary of State John Kerry spent the last few weeks believing that U.S. policy in Egypt would best be served by negotiating with Interim Vice President Mohamed ElBaradei, the former United Nations diplomat from Vienna who resigned his post after just 30 days, said a senior U.S. State Department official in Cairo.

“ElBaradei was the wrong guy to negotiate with, but ‘S’ believed he would be able to convince Mansour and [General] Sisi. State worked almost exclusively through the guy that ended up resigning after 30 days on the job,” said the official, denoting Secretary Kerry with the State Department’s standard, “S” referral.

156 I've said it once and I'll say it again for the record-BarrackObamais a seriously disturbed person. He has shown a serious tendency towards passiveaggressivebehavior. He is a coward that cannot directly confront things head-on, so he hides behind theenormouspower he wields to degrade things which he opposes or feels threatened by- in other words, to assert his self-assumed superiority over things in a passive-aggressivemanner. Heisa physical coward, so how does he treat the military? He makes the Marines ferry his dog to his vacation on a V-22 Osprey to display his contempt and power over them. How else could one understand wasting those resources while we are in a sequester when money is so tight that the public cannot tour the White house?
He cannot watch thetake downof Bin Laden. Why?Becausehe cannot bear to witness true bravery, which would make him feel less grand in comparison. It'sall about him, and any time the attention is shifted away from him, he feels diminished. He must be the object of admiration in all situations, or he cannot be present. So, in one of the more momentous episodes of his administration, he goes and plays cards.
I could go on and on, but this is my assertion- for the record- his type must make ever more bold and outrageous striving against the world- until they over-reach. This type of behavior is the basis of the fable of Daedalus- who flew ever higher until he flew to close to the sun and then came crashing to earth. It is the only trajectory of narcissists who are given unlimited power. Heaven help us.

Unfortunately while on vacation the President suffered a mild concussion after being struck with an errant golf ball. After receiving mouth to moth from his body man, Reggie Love, for an hour and a half, a treatment that no medical practitioner could be found to approve of,Mr. Obama regained consciousness although he currently believes the year is 1972. As part of this delusion the President has asked the '72 Dolphins to the White House to celebrate their impressive victory which hasn't even so much as gotten any one of them laid since 1985. Meanwhile, the debt continues to skyrocket and the Middle East burns.

In one case someone - obviously at great peril to themselves, not to mention expense - got together a huge ransom that had been demanded only to arrive and find the hostage wasn't there. It is sickening to see how this sort of thing is glossed over in the news. The actual events are bad enough, but this just makes it worse.

246 erdogan backed by the administration is also MB right?

i don't remember hearing of this on june or 2013;
n ten days, the crackdown on the anti-Erdogan protests has already claimed three lives and injured 5,000 people.

For Thierry Meyssan, the Turkish people are not protesting
against Recip Tayyeb Erdogan’s autocratic style, but against his
policies; in other words, against the Muslim Brotherhood, of which he is
the mentor. What started on Taksim Square is not a color revolution
over a new building project, but an uprising that has spread across the
entire country; in short, it is a revolution that calls the “Arab
Spring” into question.
-----------------

So we are yelling of a coup because the military interfered when the people decided they didn't want Morso or MB ?
while i understand we have legislation that we cannot support a military coup, I am wondering how MB is influencing this administrations foreign policy when Obama assisted in Morsi rise to power.

---------- we also looked away when Iranian citizens tried to throw the yoke of extremism off.

I am trying to figure out how that assisted in anything friendly or towards any US policy goals ?

I guess I'm lost on what any of this has benefited the world or us in particular.

271 Livni, Erekat to meet again in Jerusalem Tuesday evening
Published: 08.20.13, 19:12 / Israel News

Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and Chief Palestinian Negotiator Saeb Erekat met Tuesday morning in King David Hotel in Jerusalem, and are expected to hold another meeting there this evening in the course of the resumed peace talks, reliable sources told Ynet.

The sources added that the reason for the additional meeting is Erekat's trip to Russia, where he will meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Thursday and update him on the negotiations' progress. (Elior Levy)

By the way, this is what passes for "secret" negotiations in Israel.

281 Why the hell aren't the churches here in America speaking up about this?

If a church says anything to take the shine off The One and the MFM doesn't report it, was anything ever said?

Does loyalty to Obama/Democrats trump loyalty to their own fellow Christians?

Look at the idiot bishop who finally registered as a Republican after years being a Dem, saying that the booing of God at the Dem convention was what turned him off. Apparentlyignoring "thou shalt not steal," "thou shalt not commit adultery" and "thou shalt not kill" was OK with the padre as long as "social justice" money was coming his way.

Andthe churches wonder why attendance is down.

The fact that the Church in the USA doesn't have the stones to excommunicate - or at the very least, throw out physically - every asshole politician who claims be be Catholic (I'm looking at you, Choo-Choo and Nasty) was finally enough for me. You want to be the Reich National Church, you can do it without me.

People jealous of Daniel's success convinced the king that he should declare that no one should practice their own faith, only worship the king. Daniel refused, so they turned him in. The king threw him in a den of lions overnight, yet he emerged unscathed.

It is also doable, and is in fact being done right before our eyes.

That is what Abenomics is all about. It is what Takahashi Korekiyo did in the early 1930s, and it is what the Bank of England is likely to do here (while denying it), and the Federal Reserve may well do in America.

Perhaps "better" treatment as POW prisoners than as mere Christians in the hands of the Muslim Brotherhood religious fundamentalists.

148It's all part and parcel of O's anticolonialist upbringing. Christianity is part of the problem, forcing Western ideals on hapless Easterners. Thus, we have virtually no reaction when the MB decides to burn churches, kill parishoners and torment nuns.

Is it too late to point out that the Coptic Christians in Egypt were there for 600 year before Islam arrived there?
