The New Republic Finally Offers a Genuine Correction to Its Egregious Zimmerman Piece

A correction this time, rather than the stealth edit of two items (while leaving one of them misleading as hell) and the utter refusal to correct a completely-wrong third.

I've seen people commenting about how he was a busy body for calling about the garage door being open. Hey, guess what? In a community where there have been break ins, if I saw someone's garage door open and I knew they weren't home I would probably call 911, not the non-emergency number, since I would think someone broke in.

Even better, TNR doesn't say what Zimmerman was concerned about when he made the call. The text of the call makes it clear that Zimmerman was concerned about the safety of a young kid out wandering around by himself. But TNR's "retraction" is worded in such a way that someone could come away thinking that Zimmerman was "concerned" about some potential wrong-doing by the kid.

Meh, you see the same thing in academic literature. So I'm not surprised.
Do you know how many papers continue to get cited even after they're retracted? It's gotten better now that articles are digital and so you get "RETRACTED" digitally watermarked on them, but even that assumes people haven't just stored them on their computer for later reading (which is fairly common.) (In the old days of print....)
People find an article that buttresses their claim, they use it, why bother checking to see if it's still valid.

And for a "busybody" he's pretty fookin' lazy. For aught-five, he reported one garage door. One. And a pothole, which, I guess, violates a road's personal space or something.

But, taking the Devil's Advocate position, he also violated a road's personal space in aught-four, too, so maybe critics have a point. Ack! You know, he might be profiling roads!

109 Is the Truth so difficult for our Priesthood of Truth-Tellers?

Rhetorical, right? Anyway, talking about the truth gets me thinking about Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, who once wrote (paraphrasing because my memory isn't what it used to be), 'The totality of true thoughts is a picture of the world.'

Say what you want about Wittgenstein, especially when comparing and contrasting his ideas to those of more influential philosophers like, say,Karl Popper, but Wittgenstein believed in the truth--or at least truth inasumuch as we as finite and earthboundhuman beings are capable of understanding and transmitting it. If alive today, I think Wittgenstein would be aghast at whatever the hell it is that's passing itself off as modern liberalism, whose proponents no longer believe in the truth. The truth, they think, is an archaic construct only somehow tangentially related to reality, untied from fact, the result of inner party elite consensus. The press is especially guilty of this. They're not in the business of telling the truth, not any more. They're in the business of shaping and guiding perceptions. That truth-telling thing was outre years ago.

Truth starts with 'T' and rhymes with 'P' and that stands for Propaganda, and propagandaworks, baby. You better believe it.

Actually this reminds me.
So my city is sitting on a pile of cash. (Well that's only technically true, theoretically they're siting on a small mound of debt from buying a park, but they're on pace to pay it down early, i.e. in the next 4 yearsand still running budget surpluses, but still).
So they've been repairing sidewalks and street drainage curbs like crazy.
Anyway, they ripped up a sidewalk in my yard, dug out all the dirt around it, replaced the sidewalk, filled in the dirt...and then never sowed any grass. So before I could get to it, the dirt eroded away. Should I call them to make them come back out and fix it, or should I just buy some dirt, fill it in and resow myself. I'm miffed because money's tight and I didn't really intend to resow a perfectly functional (but not pretty) part of my yard.

160 Update on the Diverity Partner letter sent firm-wide. This is part of the rebuttal from another partner:

But the trial was not about whether Zimmerman was racially biased. It was about whether he committed second degree murder. The trial included evidence that Martin was on top of Zimmerman pounding his head into the pavement when he was shot. Does that evidence outweigh the widespread belief in Zimmerman’s bias? People I like at this firm come down on different sides of that question. And at this point, each side of that debate has argued its view of the events endlessly in the newspapers and over the dining room table.

But the fate of a criminal defendant should not be decided in the newspapers or over the dining room table. It should be decided in court on the evidence presented at trial, and I am troubled when a good lawyer says she is “profoundly saddened and disheartened” by a defendant’s acquittal.

We do not convict defendants because they are a symbol of something we hate. Zimmerman was on trial for a particular crime. In our system, he deserved a fair trial based exclusively on whether the evidence presented in the courtroom established his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Sometimes that process yields a result that does not fit our initial assumptions about the facts. When that happens, we ought to be very cautious about deciding that the jury got it wrong because the verdict doesn’t fit the prism through which we’ve been viewing the case. As lawyers it is our job to oppose the notion that real people should be convicted of real crimes to satisfy public opinion, widespread suspicions, or media narratives.

And now you will blow me.

169 I am still calling Bullshit on this whole thing.

The "correction" about the 7 year old black kid says it appears that Zimmerman called out of concern. It appears? The police report states he was concerned. They also took that line out of the story. Something that contradicts the story, that they tried to spin 180 degrees to make it seem the exact opposite of what it was. They got caught so they just eliminate it from the story as if the fact that he was concerned over the kid never happened.

170 Reason.com coincidentally did a piece on Detroit called "Why Detroit Won't Have a Second Act" a day or two ago describing what Detroit COULD do to save itself.

Indeed, even as Forbes was praising Detroit’s artificial green shoots, city regulations were busy nipping the real ones like Pink FlamInGo, a Latin-fusion food vendor responding to real market demand.

These regulations barred street vendors from selling any hot fare except hotdogs (but without sauerkraut) and that too only in 16 approved locations. Pink FlamInGo built a roaring business by ignoring these rules — until the city shut it down.

This whole tiptoeing through a minefield of words and concepts that John Boeher, Gabe and other "media savvy" republicans won't use just isn't working. It's time to have a really honest discussion about race and Trayvon.Posted by: jwest at July 26, 2013 03:00 PM (u2a4R)

Colton Gleason, St Cloud MN. Killed by 17 year old with one punch.
Police said Colton Gleason was walking in an alley with two women at about 11:30 p.m. on Thursday night when a car carrying five to seven people passed them and stopped.

According to the charging petition, Smithers told the driver to stop and got out of the car. He then approached Gleason and punched him in the head with a closed fist, dropping him to the ground. Smithers then got back in the car and indicated he punched the man that was knocked unconscious.
Gleason regained consciousness at the St. Cloud Hospital, but subsequently died from injuries he sustained in the attack.

189 Cripes. I knew a guy like that in the Army (maybe, 5'7"). Couple of beers down at The Goldlbrick Saloon and he'd start swinging at the first tall guy that walked by. Sometimes we got him out before the cops showed up, sometimes not... Posted by: Mike Hammer at July 26, 2013 02:47 PM (aDwsi)
We all knew guys like that. Reading some of these posts, I keptgetting flashbacksof an Army buddy of mine, an otherwise sane and decent guy who turned into a frigging maniac after a few drinks. There'd be just the two of us hanging out, shooting pool or whatever, and then out of nowhere he'd start shit with half the bar. 'We can take 'em, man,' he'd say, even though simple arithmetic told me we wouldn't. Crazy bastard.

190 Zimmerman sounds dangerous, reporting open garage doors and old white crackas with paper bags lurching around the neighborhood.

191 Mike Kelly was the editor before him, and enabled Glass the most, sorry to say. He's the one who was killed in Iraq.

Glass was a good writer as far as telling a story vividly enough to keep the reader's attention; it was just all based on imaginary bullshit and lies. Plus he's seriously mentally ill.
