Getting That Old 1979 Feeling Again

Between civil war in Syria, a prospective coup in Egypt that could lead to civil war, and serious unrest on Turkey (that could lead to civil war), we could wake up in three or six months to find the region in complete chaos or worse-maybe American hostages will complete the decay of the moment.  What a relief to know that Obama has telephoned Morsi in Egypt!  I am sure the problem is solved now.

Yep. I've been expecting events to start cascading towards a crisis since...well late 2008 or so. I figured it would take a few years for tensions to build up and inhibitions to sufficiently loosen but 5 years was definitely on the over side.

Now with just a little bad luck we could have chemical warfare troops fighting in Syria and hostages in Egypt. Bad times bad times.

And speaking of that year here's the 1979 Sears Catalog. I think I actually owned more than few toys from that edition and my bedroom décor was a slightly more tasteful version of this:

Also did anyone ever like Ziggy or was he just a giant scam by the cartoon-marketing industrial complex?

What If Hillary Doesn't Run?

My worst nightmare.
But Clinton's real problem will be that the core of the same organization that did that finessing in the 2008 primary will probably be working for. Vice President Joe Biden; who has himself been doing a lot of quiet, behind the scenes negotiating and back-slapping in anticipation of the primary.  You see, Joe Biden - God help us all - still wants to be President. But if he doesn't do it now, he doesn't do it at all. And before you dismiss Joe. there's that organization, which is largely comprised of people who targeted Hillary Clinton pretty viciously in 2008.  Think she's forgotten that, let alone forgiven it? No? Me, neither.  There's also the individual state party infrastructures themselves, which are still being generally ignored even though they were key to Barack Obama's 2008 win.  Whether they can be used to mess up Hillary Clinton's life again will be only determined when the Democratic party announces their nomination system for 2016, which I do not think that they have yet done.

Why California Can't Have Nice Things

"Behold Caltrans, the state transportation agency in California that, despite having some $14 billion or so to spend every year, cannot manage to follow its own rules," Kevin Williamson writes at the NRO Corner today. As Williamson writes, "California has been building a new eastern span for the Bay Bridge, a $6.4 billion project scheduled to open in about two months," which, as Williamson writes, "California would like very much to ensure that the bridge does not fall down."

But not to worry - they managed to fuck it up in a non-repairable way. And no one is to blame apparently.

Regarding the potential safety hazards of the new bridge span, our enlightened, Zen-focused Democrat Gov. Jerry Brown was quoted in May by the San Jose Mercury as saying, "Don't know if it's a setback. I mean, look, s*** happens."

...But that bridge may be getting plenty of extra traffic, as "Bay Area Rapid Transit workers walked off the job early Monday morning after last-minute negotiations failed to produce a new contract agreement. The strike left about 400,000 BART riders finding other ways to get work."

One upside though, is that for the moment, there's less chance of commuters being accosted by naked acrobats at BART stations while the system is strike is on

End result: A delayed bridge opening, no public transportation, but plenty of naked guys running around the train stations.

6 Insane Reasons Formerly Famous People Dropped Off the Map

Between rescuing hostages and insane Dad/Managers there are some wacky reasons why formerly well-known actors have gone MIA. But this picture pretty much explains whatever happened to Jake "Who?" Lloyd.

Family Builds a Casket for Dad

"My dad died this month. My brother, my uncle, and some close friends got together over two days to build his casket."

With the advent of commercial funeral homes and the all-American funeral we've made the process of actually burying someone in the ground more and more distant until it's almost a formality. Now many may prefer it that way but there's something to be said for doing something physical as part of the final farewell whether building or carry the casket or even helping to fill in the grave. Positive action helps dull the ache of grieving more than mere expressions of sympathy. Maybe this is a guy thing.

73 "California has been building a new eastern span for the Bay Bridge, a
$6.4 billion project scheduled to open in about two months"

As a Commiefornian, let me point out that this state has been building and building and building and building and building and building and building and building and building and building and building and building and building and building and building and building that "new eastern span".

A "new eastern span" which is not even especially long! Gunshots from West Oakland (a common occurrence there) can reach the island which makes up the midpoint of the bridge.

The damage which the "new eastern span" was meant to rectify was inflicted by the Loma Prieta earthquake. Which was in fucking _1989_.

When that "new eastern span" finally is opened to the public, there will be people in attendance who had not even been born in 1989, and some of those people will be bringing their CHILDREN. That's how long this thing has taken.

And it's not as though the huge delays have been because of an insistence upon quality workmanship and solid materials. The steel and concrete are both highly questionable. So are the bolts and the welds.

(There was actually a Federal investigation of the bridge welding during the Bush Jr. years after a whistleblower said they were grossly inadequate. However, they had all been sealed in by the time the investigators got there.)

Welcome to the American future run by liberals from top to bottom. Where simple infrastructure overhauls routinely take five times longer than forecast and cost ten times as much money as projected. Shut up, that's why.

Eh, he'll probably still be alive, but perhaps not in country. You can bet that Morsi has an escape plan all worked out with some Arab country ready to offer him sanctuary.

One obvious result of the "Arab Spring" Obama supported is that there aren't a shortage of overt Islamists in power across the sandbox.

131 Quit promoting Star Wars! I wrote several times about how those movies were backwards- the good guys were in fact the bad guys. And the other day I just added another piece of evidence to this-

Droids in the Star Wars universe were self-aware. The Empire largely did not use droids, or if they did they did not use self-aware ones that talked, had feelings, showed desires, and expressed pain. But the Rebellion did- frequently they used droids as unpaid slave labor to perform their goals and accomplish their wishes, usually by threatening to deactivate them if they did not perform. This casual use of slave labor of a self-aware creature by the 'good guys' is yet another reason why the real good guys in Star Wars were wearing black or white armor.

They even commissioned a PBS special "all about the Big Dig", and a lot of really smaht people told us "this is how it's done". Well, with all the corruption and payoffs, yeah, that's how it's done.

They'll never be ANOTHER big stupid construction project in a big city, subsidized by the FedGov to the tune of over 15 BILLION dollars again.

The waste and stupidity was appalling. I wait with baited breath and suppressed laughter when the high speed rail project in California finally gets killed because the state is broke.

281 I have a strong hunch that the GOP is in a fatal death spiral feedback loop

Loss of support from the base leads to losses in 2014. GOP leaders read data that showed that their share of the Hispanic and single young women vote was dismal.

Their solution? Actively support policies that further alienate the base "because they've go nowhere else to go" while believing futilely that the Hispanics and women will go against instinct and vote for the GOP when the Dems give them all they want and more

Rinse and repeat until party dies completely

282 New study sheds light on why Republicans won’t call themselves Republican
***
As I said in the legal insurrection thread on this...

It has been 29 years since the Republican party has nominated a conservative for president.

It has been 9 years since the party nominated someone who was not left of center (and Bush 43 was merely a centerist)

It has been 17 years since the Republican party actually made notable progress on a conservative idea – welfare reform. And in 2012 it choose a liberal as its standard bearer instead of two of the principle architects of welfare reform (Newt and Santorum).

I posted through "allergies and dust". I just don't feel like being funny tonight, but that'll change after a few Budweisers, perhaps. I'm a moron, after all.

The prayers I post are meant for everyone. Please use them to strengthen your Faith in God, family and true friends. They are really reminders for myself, but I understand the strength in the written word.

...maybe someone is moved to action, maybe not. --That's not up to me.

-I just want you all to know that if you ask for prayers, and I read about it, I'll put it into action.

God Bless you, Peaches. Thank you. God Bless little Maddie. Her trials strengthen my Faith, without even knowing her.

you couldn't possibly defend the songs, but for some reason you liked
the song anyway?

For me that song was the 1996 Donna Lewis song "I Love You, Always Forever"

Ditzy lyrics repeated over and over in a breathy voice like you're listening to phone sex

Maybe that's the reason I liked the song

Has anyone here ever chosen Walmart or Costco for their bifocal prescription? My current lenses are cracking faster than Chris Matthews' brain at a Tea Party meeting. [/rimshot]

A point or three:

First, in the last two presidential elections, 100% of the Costco related donations went to TFG

Second, the Costco CEO gave a huge speech at the DNC convention in 2012 praising Obamacare

Third, the first corporation to receive a waiver from Obamacare? Costco

Fortunately, I've turned into something of a cheapskate (probably due to their influence) and don't need any help. Now I'm trying to get them to spend their money on themselves.

Posted by: Colorado Alex

I should have qualified that statement. First, it's Boston. And there you pay the first month's rent, last month's rent, security deposit (one month), and realtor's fee (one month) all up front, just to secure the place.

He managed to find a place on his own without a realtor. So I am $700 to the good. Plus he's moving in mid month, so the math is a little wonky. He did good actually.

475 My generation doesn't realize how fucked we are. It is getting worse, too. Every university in the country is in the middle of some sort of big expansion project, and tuitions are going to keep rising until...they don't, then a lot of people are in for rough times. Students from Northwestern are probably alright, but kids spending 6 figures and dropping out of middle-tier universities (or finishing with useless degrees) are spending the rest of their lives trying to dig out of student loans. Not to mention, we are slapped with Obamacare mandates, stuck with 20-30% unemployment for young adults, and forced to pay into SS.

486 Like Egypt, the main hard drive *and its backup* on my main machine have crashed horribly.

And it happened on a day my medicine kept me awake all night and I got like two hours of sleep.

I'm currently engaged in data recovery on the failed *backup* drive, with some hope of recovering at least some of the data, whereas the main drive itself is bricked.

I may be able to unbrick the drive, given a tool that no one in the world can get to me before the weekend, I have discovered, with which I can access the firmware. It turns out that board swaps are almost entirely unreliable these days.

The tool is a USB-TTL adapter, for geeks who care. I could have built one but for a key component that *no one* in the area has... cheaper to buy someone else's anyway. Sometimes you can get the firmware of a bricked (unresponsive) drive to respond to a reset, and this brand and model are notorious for a firmware bug involving SMART logs.

On top of that I have official confirmation that my only good cardiologist is no longer practicing, and I expect to be awakened by a number of useless doctors tomorrow who are useless with useless phone calls.

I expect a plane will crash on me within a day or two. Maybe an earthquake.

Sorry, I just feel like whining today.

570 Methos, I post that shit too, but it doesn't sell, so I just end up selling it for gold and silver

Are you checking prices on each item or just using the default values? I find that most every piece of equipment will move in five days if I put it in the lowest 5 or so buyout values, and consumables/gems will move so long as the price puts them on the first page of the listing.

AD are so cheap for folks that buy them with zen, they don't seem to care about the prices, it's just a matter of staying high on the list so that it gets picked if someone's buying. I had to laugh today, as I put some 20-something GWF sword up for 25k (in line with available prices) and it sold this morning.

If stuff doesn't move on a first attempt, I then check for items of that level and equipment slot and fit it in earlier on that list.

578 Methos okay I will have to re-read that when I'm not drunk

Just to add to my thinking on that, for when you read this later, you can search prices on the first tab of the auction house.

On a first sale attempt, drag the item from your inventory to the big space for text. You'll probably want to put the item's level in both of the range slots (so 20-20 for example) and select its rarity, so as to avoid similarly named items. Then click on equipment or consumables or whatever. This step is because there's so much stuff, it's hard to know what's actually valuable, so you want instances of that particular item. This process will go faster the fewer keystrokes are involved, so try to do all items of a given level before considering items of another level.

If the item is returned, then I think about it from the buyer's perspective. They probably don't know what's good either. In this case delete anything in the text field, but fill in the level range and rarity. If your piece is class specific, you'll want to have that filter set correctly, too. The search will run when you hit Equipment, but you'll want to click on the specific body position as well for a good search. Honestly, you won't get much under this method, but you'll get something, and you already blew an identify scroll so you might as well recoup something.

Finally, until you're sure of what you're doing, your initial bid value should never be more than 25. If you set a five day auction, it is almost certain your buyer will use the buyout price so he can have it immediately. And at 25 or below for the initial bid, you don't have to spend your AD on anything that doesn't move.

I can only hope the cleanup is minimal and they have in mind what they seem to have in mind - restoring peaceful and relatively less thuggish order.

"We swear to God that we will sacrifice even our blood for Egypt

and its people, to defend them against any terrorist, radical or fool,"

This is Egypt's military's response to the Morsi statement earlier. Doesn't sound like they're looking to talk.

I figured, myself, that the Egyptian military should have had someone walk up to Morsi at zero hour of their 48-hour countdown and put a bullet in his head. Then they should have given the VP a 48-hour countdown along with a statement: "We take no power for ourselves. We're not pro- or anti Muslim Brotherhood; we're not for democrats, sharia, leftists, rightists, communists or fascists......we're anti-fuckups."

Whatev. That Morsi is still flapping his jaw and looking to cling to power is a problem. It's undermining the military -- and that he looks like he's bargaining makes it look like he's got a position of strength to bargain from. Were he dead, this would be obviously false -- even if nods were given to the MB that they coulda, shoulda, oughta be legit.

Add in Rossini's William Tell Overture, and you've got about 85% of the music backing all the classic Looney Tunes cartoons....in just 3 compositions.

And, BTW, I'd always heard it as "The Thieving Magpie" -- which better fits the Italian "La gazza ladra". Gazza is a noun, "magpie", where ladra is a modifier. So it's more correct to say "the magpie that is a thief" than "the thief that is a magpie".

Don't feel bad, I play classical guitar and I don't know half of the frigging names of the songs I play. Whats makes it a pain is that I mostly stick to the baroque period, and since it mostly revolves around the "dance" of the period there are tons of songs with the same names. Dances could have a bouree, a gigue, a sarabande, an allamande, a gavotte, etc etc. So if you say bach bouree you better know the number too, as in Bach BWV 996 Lute suite in E minor bouree, or Bach BWV 1009 cello suite in A major bouree. It gets fucking nuts, especially since other composers also wrote bourees, and sarabandes, etc, etc.

Probably why I stick with metal, you can be stoned and remember the titles. lol

622 Apparently Rossini's opera was based on an actual historical episode where a maid was accused of stealing silverware and was executed just before the true thief, a magpie, was caught. The town in which it happens annually has a ritual in which it apologizes to the victim. In Rossini's opera, the magpie is caught and the maid is exonerated at the eleventh hour.

637 On a completely different note, I was picking up some clamps at my local Harbor Freight, and ran into a woman who looked about 80% raving lunatic but talked sense like Temple Grandin.....and we had a short discussion regarding HF's periodic sales of small floor dollies for $8.99. She accurately noted that they were rated for 1000 lbs, despite being small, and that the wheels sold separately for about $4 each. She had converted everything in her garage to be on freakin' wheels, and one of her favorite tricks was to dismount them from the little dollies and put 'em on pallets -- but she found that she really needed a wheel in the middle when making pallets mobile, so five cheap dollies made four useful wheeled pallets. I'm entranced with the possibilities.

I should also point out that I normally look like a half-crazed, potbellied, unshaven bum, myself.

Adriane I think you are talking of Stethem. TWA Flight 847. He was the US Navy diver killed and dumped on the airport tarmac as one hijacker screamed, "Did you forget the Bir al Abed massacre?" The lead hijacker and triggerman who killed Stethem was rounded up in Germany when a Hizballah bomb factory was found, his name was Mohammed Ali Hamadei.

She had memory issues and coordination issues post surgery ... She did get shot in the head.

Robert Stethem died instantly, IIRC ...

strongly suggest that there be a clause where no single act of
legislation could be longer than the Constitution itself.

The House, the Senate, and the Deletatory ...

Each law / act must have a stated purpose and if the results of that law / act are not met, the Deletatory cancels, null and void, said law.

1985, Egyptair Flight:

Three of the passengers who had been shot in the head lived: Tamar Artzi, an Israeli woman who was nicked in the ear and Patrick Scott Baker, 29, from White Salmon, Wash., who was only grazed by the hijacker's bullet and has completely recovered.

Not so lucky was Jackie Nink Pflug, 31, a special education teacher, who survived her head wound and surgery but is still troubled by seizures, vision problems and traumatic memories.

The drama ended after nearly 24 hours when Egyptian commandos stormed the plane; two hijackers and 57 of 92 passengers were killed during the rescue attempt.

I had remembered the plane being in Cairo, but rather the plane was in route to Cairo ....

Three houses -- those that must live with it (citizens); those who must pay for it (one vote per $ paid in taxes during the previous year); and those who must administer it (currently the Democrats). Legislation must have a stated purpose and be evaluated annually.....if it can show progress toward its goal, it may be continued; if it does not, it is canceled -- and if it accomplishes its goal, it is ended.

683 670 new constitution needs to ban government unions entirely.

Posted by: jc at July 03, 2013 05:08 AM (PlzOe)

The biggest systemic problem with our Constitution is in the "or else" department. Take, for instance, the First Amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

The problem lies in the assumption of common decency that needs no "or else". How about "Should Congress make a law respecting an establishment of religion, prohibiting the free exercise thereof, abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for the redress of grievances....well, then they'd all be fucking useless and the entire lot would best be taken out and shot." Y'think that would do a wee bit more to command their attention?

Where are the lifetime bans on snarfing from the public trough? Where are the "if any act by a legislator be found unconstitutional, said legislator shall be ejected from public service for the remainder of his life and all votes stricken from the public record (and any acts where such legislator was the deciding vote shall be void).

Elected government service should rightfully be a balancing act on a tightwire, continually trying to bridge the gap between citizens of disparate interests in search of the common good. Personal doom accentuates this, where continuous politicking leads inevitably to setting one group against another.

Here's the thing -- and, sad to say, the Founders inevitably missed it because the population of the US in 1780 was only 2.78 million -- the MINIMUM penalty for acting against a Constitutional directive should be to go home and never again act at a Federal level.

"Congress shall make no law...." + "congress makes the law" should rightfully argue for a dismissal of congress, and lifetime bar for readmission for all parties. The only reason that we have a "political class" at all -- not to mention one that is so antithetical to our interests -- is that our Founders incorporate lifetime bans in their government of 2.78 million people.

691 Has anyone here ever chosen Walmart or Costco for their bifocal prescription?
----------------------------------------
I used Costco for my eyglasses a while ago and they were half the price of the eyeglass chain stores. They couldn't do my reading prescription, though. I never got the hang of bifocals but I'd assume they couldn't do my reading prescription in a non transition bifocal either.

If you can get the glasses you need at Costco or Walmart, you'll probably be very pleased. The eye doc at the Costco by me is not an incompetent hack either. Just young.
