Mitch McConnell Taking On The Left. UPDATE: Calls For End Of Automatic Dues Collection For Federal Worker Unions

I know the right has a love/hate/mostly hate relationship with Mitch McConnell. For whatever issues conservatives may have with the guy, one thing he's a stalwart on is the First Amendment. You know the Supreme Court Case that dealt with the horrendous McCain-Feingold bill? It's called McConnell vs. Federal Election Commission. Yeah, he sued all the way to the Supreme Court to take on John McCain.

McConnell is giving a speech at AEI today taking on the left and he's naming names a lot of conservatives never get around to, like Media Matters.

On the outside, there’s a well-documented effort by a number of Left-wing groups like Media Matters to harass and intimidate conservatives with the goal of scaring them off the political playing field and off the airwaves.

An internal Media Matters memo from January 2010 showed the extent to which these tactics have been turned into a science. In it, we learned of the group’s plan to conduct opposition research into the lives of on-air news personalities and other key decision makers at Fox News, and to coordinate with 100 or so partner groups to pressure the network’s advertisers and shareholders, get this, “by the threat of actual boycotts, rallies, demonstrations, shame, embarrassment and other tactics on a variety of issues important to the progressive agenda.”

Its multiple databases could also be used, the memo said, to remove what it describes as “chronically problematic media figures,” or “to preempt programming” … altogether.

Then, of course, there’s the widespread effort to stifle speech from within the government itself, something the Obama Administration has been engaged in from its earliest days.

On the ginned up out rage over Citizens United.

Looking back, the IRS scandal helps explain a lot of the things this administration has done. You all remember the President wagging his finger at the Supreme Court during his 2010 State of the Union address. Well, I assure you this little piece of presidential theater wasn’t done for the ratings. There was a good reason the President and his allies devoted so much time and energy to denouncing the Citizens United case. But it’s not the reason they gave. I realize this may be shocking to some of the interns in the crowd. But the fact is, the Court’s decision was actually fairly unremarkable.

All it really said was that, under the First Amendment, every corporation in America should be free to participate in the political process, not just the ones that own newspapers and TV stations. In other words, there shouldn’t be a carve-out when it comes to political speech for folks who own media companies. It was a good and fair decision aimed at leveling the playing field.

The real reason the Left was so concerned about Citizens United was that they thought it meant more conservatives would start to form what are known as social welfare organizations — something they’d been doing, with groups like Planned Parenthood and the Sierra Club, for years. And what’s notable about social welfare groups is they don’t have to disclose their donors.

That was the main concern of the President and his allies. They weren’t interested in the integrity of the process. If they were, they’d have been just as upset at Left-wing groups for maintaining the privacy of their donors. What they really wanted was a hook that enabled them to stir up outrage about conservative groups, so they could get their hands on the names of the folks who supported them — and then go after them. Citizens United provided that hook.

As a longtime political observer and First Amendment hawk, I knew exactly what the Democrats were up to with their complaints about this decision. I’ve seen what the loudest proponents of disclosure have intended in the past, and it’s not good government. That’s why the FEC has protected the donor lists of the Socialist Worker’s Party since 1979. That’s also why the Supreme Court told the State of Alabama it couldn’t force the NAACP to disclose the names and addresses of its members back in the 1950s.

The President could claim, as he did six months after wagging his finger at the Supreme Court, that “the only people who don’t want to disclose the truth are people with something to hide.” But the fact is, there’s a very good and legitimate reason that courts have protected folks from forced disclosure — because they know that failing to do so would subject them to harassment.

So the political response to Citizens United, the so-called DISCLOSE Act, wasn’t really about cleaning up politics: It was about finding a blunt political weapon to use against one group and one group only: conservatives. Those who doubt this haven’t been paying attention to the tactics of the Left. They must not have noticed the stories about top administration officials holding weekly phone calls with groups like Media Matters. They clearly don’t know their history. And they must not have noticed the enemies list of conservative donors on the Obama campaign’s Web site. Or the strategic name-dropping of conservative targets by the President’s campaign team.

Best quote for last...connecting Obama and government worker unions to the attacks on the right.

So, no, I don’t believe that the President ever actually picked up a phone and told someone over at the IRS to slow-walk those applications or audit anybody. But the truth is, he didn’t have to. The message was clear enough.

But if the message was clear, the medium was also perfectly suited to the cause.

The federal bureaucracy, and in particular the growth of public sector unions, has created an inherent and undeniable tension between those who believe in limited self-government and those who stand to benefit from its growth. Let’s face it, when elected leaders and union bosses tell the folks who work at these agencies that they should view half the people they’re supposed to be serving as a threat to democracy, it shouldn’t surprise any of us that they would. Why would we even expect a public employee — whose union more or less exists to grow the government — to treat someone who opposes that goal to a fair hearing? When the head of the union that represents unionized IRS workers publicly vilifies the Tea Party, is it any wonder that members of her union would get caught targeting them?

I love the way McConnell is just calling bullshit on all of this. He's not mincing words and he's not shying away from tying Obama to the liberal brown-shirts Obama pretends to be above and unconnected to.

Really good stuff, take some time to read it all. He's not delivering it in a very exciting way and the media will ignore it but we need to keep hammering on this. No weasel words, direct call outs of Obama and his thugs.

More of this GOP, much more.

Update: It gets better.

On the federal level, the first thing we should do is stop the automatic transfer of union dues from employee salaries at the taxpayer’s expense. If the unions want their dues, it should be incumbent on them, not us, to pay for it.

This is the kind of stuff that would make sticking with the GOP attractive. Maybe a Senate Majority Leader McConnell and say a President Scott Walker could get this king of thing done.

38 Again, what restrictions?

The restrictions on law-abiding citizens.

I know that the bad guys (and, yes, I believe they're actually bad guys) cheat, but the law says US Citizens can only give $X to a campaign. That means most US Citizens (and certainly Conservatives) will only give that amount.

The same is true of foreign donations. They're against the law. Does that stop the Democrats? No. So either it needs to be prosecuted, or that rule needs to be removed.

Level the playing-field.

Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther) at June 21, 2013 10:37 AM (/PCJa)

39 On the federal level, the first thing we should do is stop the automatic transfer of union dues from employee salaries at the taxpayer’s expense.

This is HUGE. When union members have to sit down and write their own check to the union, dues go waaay down. Dues that finance Democrat candidates and liberal big government causes.

If Republicans in every state did this, they'd have issue that most voters agree with, and one that slashes Democrat campaign contributions.

Every year we allow automatic dues collections to go unchallenged must leave Democrats shaking their heads and laughing.

45 off topic but I was surprised to see this on yahoo news:

Jay Carney doesn’t have an answer for that. He hasn’t discussed that subject with the president. He will refer you to the Department of [insert agency here]. He refuses to speculate on that. He’ll have to get back to you.

But he appreciates the question.

A Yahoo News analysis of the 444 briefings that Carney has held since becoming White House press secretary has identified 13 distinct strains in the way he dodges a reporter's question. Since Carney held his first daily briefing with reporters in the White House Brady Press Briefing Room on Feb. 16, 2011, for example, he’s used some variation of "I don’t have the answer" more than 1,900 times. In 1,383 cases he referred a question to someone else. But will he at least speculate on hypotheticals? No. In fact, he has refused to do so 525 times.

77 Hey, of unrelated note, but related:

So, there is a class action lawsuit against the NCAA, about colleges using athlete's names and likenesses to generate obscene amounts of cash while restricting the athlete's ability to make money themselves.

Now, here is the danger for the NCAA--if they get anywhere near arguing the athlete's are basically being paid as employees, just via scholarships instead of cash, then the fact is that when you combine the amount of hours per week needed for sports, and the amount of hours needed for academics, the colleges are logically going to potentially run afoul of any number of workplace regulations, esp. hours per week rules. Something any judge who put themselves through lawschool will know--it takes more than 40 hours a week to do well.

The NCAA has made it clear that academic performance is such a requirement that the NCAA is not going to be able to say going to class and studying is not a part of the job description. It is. And that will at least get them into overtime violations.

And if the argument is that it is scholarships to just go to school, not pay, and that the sport just happens to be an extracurricula activity the student does, then the univerisites will have to admit they deliberately make millions off of scholarship students and basically pay the money earned to adults who didn't do the work. There is a word for that. It is called "plantation".

And when you add in the growing evidence about football concussions, and that very few football players who make it into the NFL--well the next time some FBS school talks about something needing to be done in society as a moral imperative, just remember they don't walk the walk. They have their own sweatshops, and defend them to the last.

Didn't say he was a nice guy.

I'm not even saying he really "didn't mean it."

What I am saying is that he a) publicly took responsibility (whether he believed he was responsible or not), b) publicly punished those who actually did the dead (and it was more than just 4. The GOP is just like the Dems: They're not politiicans because they're heroic. They don't liketough votes. Liberals don't make Democrats cast tough votes. Obamacare was the only one.

Until conservatives make it safe for the GOP to vote the way we want - where the Republicans won't be painted as racist or heartless - we can scream all we want but we won't get our way. No one with the means to win a Congressional seat will risk it purely for political philosphy. Democrats don't do that. The GOP on the hill will vote the way we want when we've altered the narratives enough to make those votes safer.

116 I agree with that, except for the sweatshops reference. The kids are getting a college education for free. That's worth a few grand.

No, it's not, and no, they're not.

Many of them (especially those who go pro) never finish college. The ones who do often have degrees that are worthless, or at least could have been had much cheaper for every bit the same effect (yes, there are exceptions to this rule).

That said, a "sweatshop" doesn't pay it's employees nothing (usually). They just pay them far less than they would for legal labor. So, given the going rate of professional football (average salary is something like $200k/yr), it's safe to say universities are treating their football players (and other athletes) in the same way that sweatshop employees are treated by their owners employers.

Further making the analogy apt: if a college athlete wants to change schools, they have to beg permission to do so (and usually prove some "need"), or they have to sit out at least one year of playing (while that year still counts against their eligibility I believe).

The ones screaming "scam!" are typically the ones pissed over the "one and done" rule in basketball or the "three years from HS graduation" rule in football.

Basketball players can go play in the NBADL or in Europe for a season if they don't want to go to college, like Brandon Jennings did.

Football players don't really have that option, though the only two players to really challenge it were Maurice Clarett, who was ineligible after his freshman year, and Mike Williams, who dumbly declared after Clarett won a lower-court ruling allowing him into the draft.

210 Many of them (especially those who go pro) never finish college. The ones who do often have degrees that are worthless, or at least could have been had much cheaper for every bit the same effect (yes, there are exceptions to this rule).

And the players and parents sought this out. They sought out the "sweatshop" and turned away other, less exciting but perhaps more sensible alternatives. They're part of the scam. The honest solution would be minor professional leagues for football and basketball. That way, everyone can stop lying.

213 So, given the going rate of professional football (average salary is something like $200k/yr)

League minimum for a rookie this year is $405K and one year experience is $480K. (Governments take 40-60%, depending on where you play....) I've noticed some of the league-minimum players I follow on Twitter are already working on other income streams they can maintain after their careers...businesses, entertainment gigs, endorsements. Some of the Colts have gone on to second careers in music and ministry, which I think is neat (probably not too much money there, though).

Colleges should be paying their players at least minimum wage (hours at practice, travel, mandatory meetings/study table, etc). Better would be a system where they're paid market value and encouraged to take free classes toward a degree in the off-season and after their four years of eligibility are up, but they're not required to maintain the "student-athlete" farce unless they really want to be students.

241 [W]hen elected leaders and union bosses tell the folks who work at these agencies that they should view half the people they’re supposed to be serving as a threat to democracy, it shouldn’t surprise any of us that they would. Why would we even expect a public employee — whose union more or less exists to grow the government — to treat someone who opposes that goal to a fair hearing?

The problem in a nutshell right there. There is absolutely no legitimate reason for public unions, and they are flat out destroying our system government.

I think the point is that colleges should stop being the NFL (and NBA) farm teams.

I think something like the MLB system (where getting "drafted" by a team really just means getting a place on one of their minor-league feeder teams) would be a good choice.

Of course, all of this is also ignoring the "free market" aspect of this. No one is forcing those kids to play football (okay, mom and dad might be, but you're not going to stop that), and the schools aren't hiding the fact that they're using those kids' faces for recruitment/advertising/endorsements. So it really shouldn't come as a shock that the colleges are making millions off of those kids, and the kids aren't seeing a dime.

If the kids and their parents don't like it: stop doing it. If "walk-ons" became the norm in professional football (because the people who really cared about football stopped playing for college teams), college ball would stop being quite the big business it is.

Better yet: take the face off the outlet box, remove the hot wire(s) from the outlet, tape them up, and stuff the box back together. Doofus will think he's getting a charge, but he's not.

378 Wow. Just reported that Shulman's top political aide visited the White House over 300 times in the last 2 years.

Finally getting to the dirt.

379 There are 19 Democratic Senators up for re-election in 2014 plus Lindsey Graham and Susan Collins. Its time they all lost. That should be our goal. Hold all of ours and take all of theirs. I know it probably won't happen, but it could happen. And its not enough to have the majority in the Senate, we need an overwhelming majority. We have to get rid of these morons. We can worry about punishing our side later. We need to wipe out the libs in the senate now.

380 And why does the head of the IRS have a political aide in the first place?

Posted by: JackStraw at June 21, 2013 12:10 PM (g1DWB)

381 there is no way in hell he would ever get a TS or Name level clearence as he enjoys now....

Added bonus: now is he is a classifier/declassifier as well.

Apparently all positions in this administration are required to have a commisar to ensure that people toe the party line.

383 Crap. As hard as it was to do, I read the whole post.
Now I really want to see what you folks are saying but by the time I get to @100 I'll have an eyeball ache turning into a headache.
No video and yet...

You were lucky to have cardboard! There were a hundred and fifty of us, sharing one internet connection, huddled in a shoebox in the middle of the road. We had to work twenty-nine hours in factory for one ampersand every four months and pay Ace for permission to post!

386 I'm usually a pretty polite driver. If someone needs to merge in front
of me, I wave them in. Except if it's someone driving a Subaru or a
Prius. I become the most aggressive mother fucker on the road.

Hey now, not all Subaru drivers are lesbians and lefties. My retired military Dad, who is conservative, drives one. Don't ask me why. He likes it.

388 "On the federal level, the first thing we should do is stop the automatic
transfer of union dues from employee salaries at the taxpayer’s
expense."

Winner. Most people don't even know the deductions are automatic and then given to Dem campaigns, and they are totally against it once I tell them.

389 Talk about how the CORPORATIONS don't want to tell you those facts.

The irony is that we work at a huge multinational corporation. All
of the stupid lefty slogans about huge corporations and profits is
forgotten every two weeks when we get paid.

Preach. I work in lefty central. Moonbats piling up against other moonbats. My employer? A large software company corporation. People who work here are better paid than almost anyone in the region. Yet they still think they're "the 99%". Buncha political tards is what they are.
