Important: Researcher Says that Berenstein Bears, Franklin the Friendly Turtle Perpetuate "Racist," "Socially Dominant Norms" to Children

These are the people who populate our EPA, IRS, and of course our DoJ, too.

Parents who read their kids stories about happy, human-like animals like Franklin the Turtle or Arthur at bedtime are exposing their kids to racism, materialism, homophobia and patriarchal norms, according to a paper presented at the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Most animals portrayed in children’s books, songs and on clothing send a bad message, according to academics Nora Timmerman and Julia Ostertag: That animals only exist for human use, that humans are better than animals, that animals don’t have their own stories to tell, that it’s fine to “demean” them by cooing over their cuteness. Perhaps worst of all, they say, animals are anthropomorphized to reinforce “socially dominant norms” like nuclear families and gender stereotypes.

Franklin the Turtle: Menace or Nazi?

“[M]uch of young children’s media reproduces and confirms racist, colonial, consumerist, heteronormative, and patriarchal norms,” Timmerman and Ostertag write in their paper ‘Too Many Monkeys Jumping in Their Heads: Animal Lessons within Young Children’s Media,’ presented at Congress Wednesday.

Arthur the Aardvark and his "perfect" family.
Not pictured: Rape

But all of this is, of course, perfectly obvious. Now let the authoress put more information inside you.

She thinks we should have more children's books about ants -- not anthropomorphized ants, but straight-up ants, because ants are fascinating -- to teach us things like "ants work together" and "the workers in ant colonies are females."

Ants are also mindless, thoughtless, without identity or personality, and only interested in eating, resting, and serving the collective and its God-Queen. Which I suppose is another great lesson for children.

"It’s just problematic when it’s the only way children see animals portrayed in the media and “when we don’t realize that an animal also has its own complex embedded ambiguous life and it exists outside of our own use or interpretation,” she said.

Yes, that's what children love reading about, the complex embedded ambiguous lives of animals.

Ambiguous Lives of Animals

First- what is it with leftists' need to elevate animals to the same status as humans? What she really wants to be saying is that hamburgers are murder (thus the reason she has quite obviously never eaten one).

Also- the "complicated lives of animals" are mostly short and brutal focused on sex, food, and usually painful, gory death.

Sends out branches to block it's neighbor's sunlight, sends out branches to injure and maim it's neighbors, makes deals with evil insects who target other species. It's grow fast, grow tall, grow wide, or die. If you succeed in 'crowding out' a competitor, and that competitor dies, you feast on the decaying remains.

189 31 but hey, she's got a PhD., so she's got to be like way smart.

Actually, she doesn't, she's trying to get one.

This is the problem with even having Ph.D.s for the wussmanities and social-promotion sciences.

In order to get a Ph.D., you have to write a dissertation that produces original knowledge. In the sciences, you don't really have to reach too far to be able to do this. Prove something, conduct an experiment nobody's done before and collect data. Piece of cake.

But what are you going to do in English literature? Be the 100,000th interpreter of Shakespeare? Study something classical and well-known? Nope. You're going to use "novel theories" and "unique approaches" that are nothing but utter bullshit.

And it turns the whole profession into bullshit because it raises the stakes. Who wants to be the artist who paints beautiful landscapes? You get attention by putting a cross in urine. You get even more attention from the negative attention. And you know the sensibilities of your patrons (rather than the public) and you play to them.

The humanities must go from higher education. They are less than worthless, they are harmful.

205 I have a family member who attends one of the top Ivy League literacy programs and actually authored a children's book. I can assure you this is not the norm. While you have the occasional kookie outlier with an agenda, ahem, and there is a push to be more thoughtful about the content (cultural differences, inclusive, etc.) in the end it needs to have educational value.

Authors use animals because they are very effective teaching tools. Children relate to animals, especially baby animals because they are somewhat innocuous in their qualities and neutral in their human attributes.

I could go on but this would become a dissertation...or rant.

One of themain points of children's literature is to introduce and reinforce dominant social norms. Everybody's born ignorant, and learning these dominant social norms helps children understand most folks around them. There's time enough to learn other social norms later, in order to better understand the outliers.
You don't teach subtraction by starting with negative numbers, you don't teach ethics by starting with the gray areas, and you don't teach kids about other people by starting with norms adopted by asmall fraction of people.

Chapter One

Once there was a wonderful little ant of color named Little Black Ant-bo.

Little Black Ant-bo lived in a cosy dirt nest with hundreds and hundreds of her delightful sisters.

"Hello, Sister Ant." said Little Black Ant-bo whenever she met another of her sister ants because she was a polite little ant, "May I vomit in your mouth and run my feelers all over your plump, round abdomen?"

"Please do." said Sister Ant "If only we had a cup to vomit into. Then we could share each other's yummy vomit back and forth many times."

"If only" sighed Little Black Ant-bo "Let's go back to my place and make tortillas!"

"Yes, let's make tortillas together!" laughed Sister Ant.

And that's just what they did.

" Reading as an adult, I observed a flaw in the book I'd never noticed as a kid.  Granted, Where the Red Fern Grows is the story of a boy and his dogs, but there's some serious gender bias at work here.  Billy has three younger sisters.  Not one of them is ever referred to by name.  In addition, Grandpa is a major character, but Grandma isn't mentioned until page 167, and after page 168 is never mentioned again.  The only human female of significance is Billy's mother.  The character of Little Ann, however, might make up for this.  Old Dan brings the muscle, but Little Ann is the brains of the operation.  "

Look how ants handle foreign threats. Do they try and negotiate? Do they apologize? Perhaps they hold United Insect meetings? No. They see something not from their community, they attack it, while it's running they grab their buddies follow it home and kill every last one of the Mother F*ckers and eat the children. As a matter of fact, ants will generally kill anything they can that they can find and overpower. The extent of their cooperation is continually growing and expanding their citystate into new territory and killing and eating everything around them. Ants don't live in a diverse pluralistic society. They live in a fully homogenized society. Homogenized by genetics. A master race if you will. No God, no such thing as an opinion; There are no ant homosexuals. No ant artists. No ant philosophers. No universities or liberal studies in antatmies. Ant's have three classes, breeders, workers, soldiers. The breeder, she's imprisoned and forced to relentlessly bear children until death, and no abortions ever. Because every ant is valuable to the colony. Did I mention the men never have to work their entire life and only exist to bang female ants?

So much to learn from ants.

Ant's don't have a leader. Noone calls the shots. No Ruling Class.
The Queen is just a baby machine.
Each individual Ant does it's own thing. Noone tells it what to do. It takes cues from it's environment to pick an option but it's not being commanded.
With no controllers, no commanders, these simple, stupid little creatures build incredible homes, establish supply lines to food sources, go to war, and manage disaster relief all on their own. No General, no President, no FEMA Director.

So, yea. Teach the kids about the Community-Based Sociological Model of Ants. It's Science!

The deer have nipped the terminal bud off of three or more of my two year old white pine seedlings. I can't believe there is much nutritional value in that one or two grams. Sapsucker bird has nearly killed my only red pine, and it has a break where the main truck was broken. I had nearly 25 pine cones on that tree, and only collected two of them before the squirrels got them. Out of 50 seeds, germinated four seedlings.

I want to put some white oak out in back and that is where the deer hang out all summer, so I'll have to cage the seedlings to protect them.

I did some basic forestry management, and everything I cut down was diseased, infested, dead or dying with heart rot, or twisted, bent, broken worthless. The few elm immediately contracted dutch elm disease when the neighbor took out the few trees with commercial value.

And I keep ripping out the wild black berry because they don't produce any fruit, and I can't tell the difference between berry bushes and nettles; and the wild raspberries are a part of the life cycle of white pine blight. And the remaining wild strawberries produce fruit but only very small quantities, an very tiny berries.

I broadcast cabbage seed just to feed the deer, 'cuz I'm a nice guy.

Of course, Atheism does in fact lead to (actual) materialism. What else could it lead to? Theistic materialism, Theistic idealism, Theistic spiritualism, Atheistic materialism, Atheistic idealism, Atheistic spiritualism, or some synthesis of the various Theistic or Atheistic variants are the sole options. Science is Atheistic materialism, and therefore anyone who actually understands and completely internalizes science would tend toward Atheistic materialism. Granted, most people don't, so they end up practicing and championing Atheistic idealism and Atheistic spiritualism (both highly dystopian forms of paganism).

430 Look how ants handle foreign threats. Did I mention the men never have to work their entire life and only exist to bang female ants?So much to learn from ants.

532 Ok, Off-Topic.

On the subject of secret patents (from the files of Mrs. Delta):

At the request of a defense agency, patent applications may be held under a secrecy order. “A secrecy order withholds the grant of a patent, orders that the invention be kept in secrecy and restricts filing of foreign patent applications,” (Federation of American Scientists, 1991). When a patent application is under a secrecy order, the USPTO will continue to process the application and determine whether it is to be accepted or rejected, but they will not publish the application or actually issue the patent until the secrecy order is lifted (see 37 C.F.R. § 5.3). Secrecy orders expire after one year unless renewed by a request from a government agency, although additional laws may still prevent the disclosure of certain information, particularly technical data that has been classified by the DOD (USPTO, 2012a).

Note that patent secrecy orders are not the same thing as Confidential/Secret/Top Secret classification by the U.S. government, although a patent for a technology that has been classified as Secret will likely receive a patent secrecy order. There are three types of secrecy orders. The first, and least restrictive, identifies patents that include export controlled technologies. Owners of patents covered by these “Type 1” secrecy orders may disclose the content of their patents for “legitimate business purposes” as long as they comply with applicable export control laws (Federation of American Scientists, 1991). The second, Type 2, secrecy order specifies procedures for handling classified material at the USPTO. Type 3 secrecy orders instruct the USPTO to withhold the disclosure of patent applications that are not officially classified but do contain information that could be detrimental to national security if published (see Federation of American Scientists (1991), USPTO (2012a) chapter 0100 section 120, and 25 USC § 181).

533 "Much of young children’s media reproduces and confirms racist, colonial, consumerist, heteronormative, and patriarchal norms,” Timmerman and Ostertag write..."

They act like that's a BAD thing.

Left out of their analysis is the fact that animals are now used to convey stories to children specifically to AVOID charges of racism. In the Bad Olde Days, the protagonists of children's stories were usually people -- white people, that is, in our Eurocentric culture.

Since Dick and Jane (and their innumerable cohorts) were white, but the publishers probably wouldn't sell a lot of books with black (or Asian or whatever) protagonists, the brilliant solution was to have race-neutral ANIMAL protagonists that all kids could relate to and that would defuse accusations of racism.

Ah, but you see, it's NEVER ENOUGH. Give the postmodern Left a centimeter, they'll take a kilometer.

Now the protagonists must overtly indoctrinate children with communist claptrap, or the story gets slapped with the dreaded "colonialist" label.

Gramsci is smiling up from hell at his minions doing as he taught them.

Good lord. I haven't seen an Arthur book where the father isn't portrayed in an apron, or a Berenstain Bears story where Papa Bear doesn't act like an idiot.

Sometimes with children's books (I wish it was most times) There shouldn't be any "traditional values" in any of them. Why can't it be just a good story that kids enjoy and hopefully pass down to their children. Sometimes it's cool just to be a hole in the bucket. Couldn't care less what dear Liza thinks about fixing it.

OMIGWAWW! Not reinforced dominant norms! Now normative! Non-normal is the only normal. Law is crime. Up is the new Down; repeal the law of gravity.

As I look back on our childrearing days and try to figure out what went wrong in their upbringing, I keep coming back to "The Little Red Hen." The book we had was the Muppets version or something. It was the usual story. Hen wants to make muffins, but at each step no one will help. Comes the finale, who will help eat them, when she should lock the doors and pig out with lots of icing on the haha it was cupcakes, no, no, instead, all is forgiven, and the little sluggards reaped unearned rewards.

I just didn't realize at the time how insidious it was.

The cubs were shown snarfing down candy along with, you guessed it, the father bear, because men are just, you know, big children, and the Momma bear really needs to have absolute command so as to keep him in check.

Yes! I remember that. There was also the one where Mama made them turn off the TV because the kids were watching too much, and Papa went to watch the news and she treated him the exact same and wouldn't let him. Also condescended to him throughout the whole story.

Scares me that I remember that.

I found myself watching in disbelief. It finally hit me, that these are the so called educators who brought whole language to reading and banned the perfectly good Phonics system. These prunes are the ones responsible for an entire generation not knowing how to spell. Not having enough words in their "word bank". Setting back the age the newspaper had to be geared to, to like 10. But, they are also responsible for the fact that children from disadvantaged households are not reading because they've made reading way more difficult than it had to be. If the child cannot read without parental or teacher help, if the child cannot negotiate the system alone, with the guidance of making sounds, the child is dependent on everyone else, not him or herself. Interior education sabotage. Thousands of kids, whose parents could not speak or read a word of English attended school during the time of phonics and were soon reading at twelfth grade level, without any help from parents. And, they could spell and learn grammar to boot.

..........

Absolutely. I have an acquaintance who claims to be a teacher(she actually is one of those, per state licensing) who was beyond thrilled when phonics was removed from reading. She teaches reading now by, get this, requiring children to memorize entire words.
And she was also in complete agreement about no longer teaching cursive writing. Printing only, I guess because it makes it easier to create those whole words you are supposed to recognize and remember when you are five or six.....and are unable to sound out at 16-17.
We will have an entire generation who cannot read their Obamacare tax form and will have to print their name and then scribble some circles to pretend they are signing it.
