Sharyl Attkisson: I'm Not Pointing Fingers, But I Think My Computer Was Breached Since at Least February 2011

She's a little tentative about stating, as a fact, that her computer was breached; I think she's saying she suspects it, and has people looking into it, but isn't quite sure yet.

I sure hope she hasn't jumped the gun on this allegation, because she's one of the only "mainstream" media reporters who doesn't take Obama's word as the Gold Standard, and actually bothers checking up on whether he's telling the truth.

All other "mainstream" reporters take it as a fact that Obama cannot like -- being Jesus-like -- and so if he says "I've looked into and cleared myself," that's the end of the inquiry.

This would be the End of Things if true.

Incidentally, the DoJ says it doesn't "anticipate" filing charges against James Rosen for espionage.

Of course not. That was just a fraud perpetrated on the court to get access to his emails.

22 What you want to do, should push need to come to shove in some way, is only try to end Progressivism and corruption (BIRM), and not install conservatism. Because you want to peel off as many moderate liberals as possible, and giving them some reassurance will be necessary. It lowers the damping coefficient for action.

Decisively discrediting elitist Progressivism will be enough of a signal victory for conservatism that it should be enough in and of itself. After that, you can make your case to the people in a much friendlier (and less thuggish) environment. Thus, do not try to win everything, just the main thing.

Once it's left somewhere for an hour or two, put it back in the library for an expert to examine for tampering. Even then you can't use internet. Period.

When she came home from work, she thought it was suspicious that there was an unmarked van with 8 antennas on the roof parked out front, and a man sitting at her computer, wearing pair of overalls that said "ACME Computer Repair" over a white shirt and tie.

Well, not that I'm aware of, but now you've got me paranoid.

In honesty, though, it wouldn't be that easy. Virus Definitions are not "you'll see exactly this code" but, rather, "You'll see code that behaves like this, or interfaces with these files." That's why lots of new viruses never go anywhere, and why it's big news when there's some virus that is affective (even for a short time) against all of the the standard AV suites- it's very hard (and getting harder with every iteration) to write software that exploits what holes are left and still has the access to do anything noteworthy on your machine.

119 I once thought my computer was hacked, and when I took it out of storage two months ago (after my other laptop got stolen) and updated it, the anti-virus program found several Trojans (the three year time in storage gaven given the defense time to develop the appropriate countermeasures for detection that they had not gern able to in 2009).

I do recall that this would be the computer whose final day in my service had been when I got a warning it was sending private data over the 'net, and I quickly shut it down.

This all occuring five minutes after my "Battle Mmm of the Republic" parody was posted at a well-known but slightly disreputable site (not this one, which of course is entirely disreputable). Coincidence, I'm sure.

But in the very very slight case it wasn't, luckily for the left, I am of no interest to history, being a mild-mannered man, not quite a millionaire playboy, but one not seemingly very productive, so the Progs, if they did it, will get away with it. Google analyitics is one of the scripts that stalls. The social media scripts are slow to load and sometimes block waiting for handshake (or whatever) that never completes.

Too many of the web sites don't render properly if you kill their scripts. if they load at all. The advertising bits get filtered, but it looks like those scripts have a method to confirm execution and if those ad bits get filter, then other methods are called to force the user to see an ad. (Townhall, HotAir, and others who do flash popups)
I have java script turned off, and have deleted Flash. (have 'a thing' about Adobe)

I understand the business model, but I absolutely HATE ads, from the days of 300 baud dialup. I'm getting billed by my ISP for all those ad bits, and over budget because they are forced down the pipe.

I can't tell if it's poor service from the ISP, slow response from servers, even DNS stalls and times out.

Casey, Jr. always sounds stoned.

rootkits are the way to go. Get the OS to log the keystrokes for you

Yep, and there's not much an AV suite can do about those- except detect them. And they're getting pretty good at detecting them.

(Hint: sometimes even just formatting the HD isn't enough to get rid of those, they're better at survival than cockroaches)
Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther) at May 21, 2013 12:32 PM (/PCJa)

We had a laptop get infected with a keylogger when one of my old bosses let his 13 yo son use the laptop over a weekend. Gee, where could the rootkit have come from? *taps chin* Anyway, I was asked what we should do and I said pull the HD and beat it to pieces with a hammer. After the eyerolling at me, the office manager called our IT people who pretty much told her the same thing.

Sadly, I was not allowed to actually do it.

216 I wonder how many tea partiers will turn out to protest IRS offices today? Protests are scheduled for noon.

I was thinking about it, but...The location for my city was a hospital complex. I found the IRS office on a little road off the freeway. A nice quite little corner of an industrial complex, offices not manufacturing. The local Tea Party put out an email that they weren't able to organize an event this quickly, and linked a Birmingham event. I thought of riding my bike, while wearing my Gadsden T-Shirt. Then I though that if a local out of the way office of the imperial IRS was surrounded by a bunch of peasants... we might find out how much ammo they have stockpiled. So I chickened out, grabbed a 5-guys burger and sit here typing.

SWAT Team Rams Wrong Man's Car
http://www.captainsjournal.com/2013/05/20/swat-team-rams-wrong-mans-car/

Driving in the early morning hours to his job at a metal shop in Buda, Miguel Montanez at first thought the approaching lights were a school bus or a tow truck.

But Montanez says it was a Hays County SWAT truck that rammed his car head-on. As they collided, another police vehicle pinned him from behind, he says.

He heard a shot.

“I saw my windshield crack, and I ducked down as low as possible,” Montanez said. “I really thought I was going to die.”

Seconds later, he says, three deputies were pointing assault rifles at him. “That’s when I heard one of the officers say, ‘Oh, (expletive), we got the wrong guy,’ ” Montanez said...

Do the antivirus programs ignore government sponsored computer viruses?

Keep in mind that Stuxnet was revealed to the world because an anti-virus company found it on the computers of a client (a European firm that had done some work for the Iranians, iirc). From what little I can tell, it appears that the AV companies take the view that keeping their clients' machines intrusion free is more important than surreptitiously helping governments snoop around.

I think it's cute that the IRS -- or DOJ, or Defense, or State, what have you -- all seem to have no problem with just ignoring deadlines set by Congress. They know they can do it because they know Congress can do nothing about it except stamp their feet and threaten to hold them in contempt.

290 Apparently dolphins are smarter that the people who work at the IRS

---

Man has always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much...the wheel, New York, wars and so on...while all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man...for precisely the same reason.

300 Oh good - more scandals.* Too bad we can only follow one scandal at a time. The administration will keep releasing scandals, each a little weaker than the last until we get to the final scandal that Obama once jaywalked.
And that will be that. All other scandals will disappear like has happened for no other president. Because Obama.

*If this actually happened and if it was DOJ and not some dimwit "Anonymous" wanna-be that didn't like her reporting. Like the fool that hacked Palin's e-mail account.

301 >>Think Progress is reporting that McConnell and Boehner do not want further Benghazi probs cause, "over reach" and the republican aides are bitching about "crazy" Benghazi theories to Roll Call.

Think Progress is a blog run by people at the Center for American Progress which is a 501C3. However, it also operates The Center For American Progress Fund which is a registered 501C4 entity.

Of course it never got help up by the IRS because it is run by Hillary and Obama cronies.

303 #286 I am simply not going to believe that McConnell and Boehner will shut down these investigations.

Yes, they need to go slow because of overreach dangers. Yes, people in office shouldn't speculate about impeachment or crazy conspiracy theories (the truth is bad enough).

However, I think that this is an exaggeration on the part of Roll Call because one of the primary efforts the dems are working on is destroying the GOP through division.

He went to the FBI, and they said "Don't worry we;ll keep your wife from finding out." He said "Don't bother, she took them." FBI "OK, we will keep it out of the news." Gillette "That's ok, I planing on writing about it in my next book." FBI "Then why are you here?" Gillette "I don't think people should be allowed to to do that." Heard it on Red-Eye, funny as hell.

325 DIfference between c's 3 and 4

Typically, charitable organizations receive 501c3 status allowing donors to receive tax deductions for their contributions to these organizations. However, having this status precludes an organization from participating in campaigning and lobbying activities. Conversely, the IRS states that a 501c4 organization operates exclusively to provide social welfare programs and net earnings must be used to support charitable or educational endeavors. According to the IRS, if your organization plans to participate in campaigning or lobbying activities, it can only receive tax-exemption through a 501c4 status.

330 FYI, this is why reformatting your machine once every few months is a
good idea. I've gotten the rebuild process down to an hour. Love that
freshly formatted OS smell.

Check out running a virtual machine. Win7 and Win8 allow you to boot to a virtual machine. Once you get the OS installed, with all the updates, take a snapshot and save it somewhere. Then when you feel ready to do a refresh, you nuke your VM, put your snapshot in its place, do your updates, take a new snapshot, and you have a spanking fresh OS with a fraction of the work.

Additionally, whenever you want to try out a program, but are not sure if it'll work on your system, you can fire up a copy of the snapshot, install, and try it out. If it doesn't work, just delete the snapshot. Boom, back to your known good OS without having to rely on some crappy uninstall that doesn't wipe all the changes the install did.
