Enemies List: Founder of "True The Vote" Harrassed by IRS, OSHA, FBI, and ATF

This woman has a story to tell.

In July 2010, Catherine filed with the IRS seeking tax-exempt status for her organizations. Shortly after, the troubles began.

That winter, the Federal Bureau of Investigation came knocking with questions about a person who had attended a King Street Patriots event once. Based on sign-in sheets, the organization discovered that the individual in question had attended an event, but “it was a come-and-go thing,” and they had no further information on hand about him. Nevertheless, the FBI also made inquiries about the person to the office manager, who was a volunteer.

The King Street Patriots weren’t the only ones under scrutiny. On January 11, the IRS visited the Engelbrechts’ shop and conducted an on-site audit of both their business and their personal returns, Catherine says.

Two months later, the IRS initiated the first round of questions for True the Vote. Catherine painstakingly answered them, knowing that nonprofit status would help with the organization’s credibility, donors, and grant applications. In October, the IRS requested additional information. And whenever Catherine followed up with IRS agents about the status of True the Vote’s application, “there was always a delay that our application was going to be up next, and it was just around the corner,” she says,

As this was occurring, the FBI continued to phone King Street Patriots. In May 2011, agents phoned wondering “how they were doing.” The FBI made further inquiries in June, November, and December asking whether there was anything to report.

The situation escalated in 2012. That February, True the Vote received a third request for information from the IRS, which also sent its first questionnaire to King Street Patriots. Catherine says the IRS had “hundreds of questions — hundreds and hundreds of questions.” The IRS requested every Facebook post and Tweet she had ever written. She received questions about her family, whether she’d ever run for political office, and which organizations she had spoken to.

...

On the same day they received the questions from the IRS, Catherine says, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) launched an unscheduled audit of their machine shop, forcing the Engelbrechts to drop everything planned for that day.

...

That was in February. In July, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration paid a visit to Engelbrecht Manufacturing while Bryan, Catherine, and their children were out of town. The OSHA inspector talked with the managerial staff and employees, inspecting the premises minutely. But Bryan says the agent found only “little Mickey Mouse stuff, like, ‘You have safety glasses on, but not the right kind; the forklift has a seatbelt, but not the right kind.’” Yet Catherine and Bryan said the OSHA inspector complimented them on their tightly run shop and said she didn’t know why she had been sent to examine it.

Not long after, the tab arrived. OSHA was imposing $25,000 in fines on Engelbrecht Manufacturing. They eventually worked it down to $17,500, and Bryan says they may have tried to contest the fines to drive them even lower, but “we didn’t want to make any more waves, because we don’t know [how much further] OSHA could reach.”

I don't know what to say.

60 I think one of the worst parts of that story -- and I read the whole thing this morning, sick to my stomach --are the passages about Barbara "Bumfuck" Boxer and Elijah "Gimme my Viagra so I Can" Cummings:

A few months later, True the Vote became the subject of congressional scrutiny. In September, Senator Barbara Boxer (D., Calif.) wrote to Thomas Perez, then the assistant attorney general of the civil rights division at the Department of Justice (who has now been nominated for labor secretary). “As you know, an organization called ‘True the Vote,’ which is an offshoot of the Tea Party, is leading a voter suppression campaign in many states,” Boxer wrote, adding that “this type of intimidation must stop. I don’t believe this is ‘True the Vote.’ I believe it’s ‘Stop the Vote.’”

And in October, Representative Elijah Cummings (D., Md.), the ranking minority member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, attacked True the Vote in a letter. He wrote that “some have suggested that your true goal is not voter integrity, but voter suppression against thousands of legitimate voters who traditionally vote for Democratic candidates.” He added that: “If these efforts are intentional, politically motivated, and widespread across multiple states, they could amount to a criminal conspiracy to deny legitimate voters their constitutional rights.” He also decried True the Vote on MSNBC and CNN.

The cold, malicious content and outright lies spoken by these (unbelievably) elected federal officials in an effort to undermine and antagonize a small group of dedicated citizens is monstrous.

You ask how this kind of intimidation and these gestapo tactics could be coordinated without suspicion? I say look to the knobs on Capitol Hill and 1600 PA Avenue. That's where these jerks get their marching orders. It all goes back to them.

He said he'd never in his life, as an owner of several businesses, been audited.

They showed up at his home. He said his wife called him at Fox in tears.

Yep. We are not going to be able to vote our way out of this. That ship has sailed.

Sadly, I have no objection to your observation.

Also, you'd think some enterprising Pubbie could say something along the lines of, "Why was this woman targeted?" They could make it all about sexual harassment, if they were smart.

Which is why it won't happen.

That's before you even realize the implications of the fact that her interest in combatting voter fraud - in a non-partisan way -put her on the enemies list. Oh. So you're stupid AND sanctimonious. Awesome.

Your "internet connection" relies on satellite connections maintained by such entities as Comcast and Time Warner- all members of the EVIL MSM. So, unless you think they maintain those *for free*, your internet connection pays to help them stay in business.

Therefore, by your logic, the only way you are allowed to communicate is via carrier pigeon or smoke signals- since any other method of long-distance communication either funds the evil MSM or the government directly.

I would say "let me know when you've done that," but you'll be communicating by smoke signals and carrier pigeons, so I don't think I'll be able to hear from you.

207 I got hit with a full boat IRS audit for my business once. Not your average TCMP spot check of sections of a return.....but a full boat bring your own lube for the proctoscope-audit.
After 2 weeks they found 3 errors, 2 of which were in my favor, 1 against me. Added up, they would have owed me about $1000. They offered to settle if I would pay for the 1 error they found against me. My accountant explained that he would charge me more than $1000 to refile if I didn't agree and settle.
3 weeks later we found out what had triggered the audit: An employee had a "habit" of turning in her employers to the IRS and triggering an audit, from which she would get a 10% spiff of anything they found. The first time she turned in an employer, they had found $30K in errors so she got about $3k. Since then.....I was the 4th consequtive employer who had been subjected to a surprize audit with no other reasons for the IRS to come calling.

The claim that the IRS singling out applications with right-wing sounding names (including 9/12, which is specifically a Glenn Beck thing) is not politically motivated is as laughable as something a Kenyan friend told me. Apparently, an opposition politician was found dead from a bullet wound(s?) with his hand tied and the govt said it was suicide. That may not have been the exact way they found him (my memory is fuzzy), but it was a manner of death that was impossible to attribute to suicide.

It will not be long before this leads to an exodus from politics for tons of conservatives. The game is rigged; why ruin your family's welfare? And thus we will become a banana republic.

It would be swell to get Voter ID passed simply because of the obvious corruption used against those who seek it. That alone is good enough for me to be convinced there's a serious problem with our election integrity.

The can act on anonymous complaints. So anonymous just about anyone -- possibly someone within the agency can make one as a private citizen.

The interesting thing to me is that an inspection was made. There is a (OSHA) formula of man hours lost divided by total man hours worked -- if it is low enough the owner of the business can refuse to allow OSHA through. I tried this but some asshole had a slip and fall in the parking lot (yeah, it was a load of crap, he got his ass kicked in a barroom fight) and OSHA counted the days he was out sucking down brews on workers comp.

My information is based on the law from about a decade ago. It might have been changed under Obama.

no, read your liberal larry blame bush website, the 2000 and 20004 elections were stolen because of voter intimidation, some minorities saw a police car on the way to vote and peed their pants and ran screaming. or something. It's quite different. Bussing around union thugs and FOB somalis from voter station to voter station is mere enfranchisement. Ensuring one person one vote is stalinist.

303 "Miller got his marching orders...Feign indignation and object to their definitions. Substitute nonjudgmental, inaccurate alternatives. Miller seems highly offended by the word TARGET. He feels it is...what's the adjective...? PEJORATIVE! In point of fact it is not. "DumbA$$" is pejorative. It's derogatory and not logical. "Target" is neither. Target is the exact correct term.
He, like other LIBERAL WORDSMITH HACKS prefer soft phrases, preferably non accusatory ones like "mistakes were made." (presumably by unnamed third parties) And by the way, a MISTAKE is an error without intent. It commonly describes an effort to do something specific which falls short. It's failing to carry the one, not insisting that 5+5 equals 9. Obviously a purposeful action or decision to break the rules or commit a crime is a "mistake" ONLY in the eyes of one caught.
Progressives often use "misspoke" instead of LIE. Makes it sound like putting the accent on the wrong syllable or mispronouncing a word with no intent to deceive... An example of misspoke to a Liberal is "we dodged sniper fire on the tarmac."
We must ask Ms. Clinton if assuring a grieving mother that her dead son "will receive justice when the filmmaker responsible is punished" is another example of "misspoke?"
To make the truth seem more palatable, Democrats love euphemisms: "revenues" means "taxes," "invest" means "spend," "AstroTurf" means "grass roots." "undocumented worker" means "illegal alien," "recused myself" means "avoiding perjury," "I don't recall that" means "avoiding perjury" and "I don't have a factual basis to answer that question" means "avoiding perjury."
A particular favorite is "inappropriate" in lieu of WRONG. Using your knife to eat peas is inappropriate. Targeted harassment and intimidation by the federal government is not "inappropriate." It's criminal discrimination. If Progressives were being targeted I'm sure it would also be RACIST.
"Bad or horrible customer service" generally means the service provider failed to make the experience pleasant, to be polite, provide follow-up support and and honor promises. If you order a pizza and the delivery man brings you a cold, burnt pizza, it's "bad customer service." If he is rude and overcharges you too, it's "horrible customer service." If he arrives with no pizza, forces his way inside, assaults and robs you...it's criminal. I might also point out that we are not "customers" of the IRS. We are their employers!" Lighten up Francis. If you have never actually fought "City Hall", don't bitch at others as to what they are doing. People need other things than just sitting in front of a computer screen frothing at the mouth, and if watching a hockey game takes them away for a few hours, good.

Take it from my experience, fighting City Hall will kill you. What you think is the most important thing, others think is trivial. I fought my city hall for 5 years. Every time I turned around they threw up road blocks for my company, or targeted taxes that just seemed to only fall on my company, and the city used those targeted tax dollars to bring in a national competitor to my company. I fought on alone, friends, neighbors, and customers would always tell me to keep up the good fight, but then turned around and told me how they had just voted for the same people to be re-elected. They were shocked when I told them that the Mayor and council members were the problem. So after 5 years, I ended up in the hospital. When I was released from the hospital, the Mrs looked at me and asked if it was worth it. "No" was my answer. So 2 weeks later, I closed the business, paid my employees a severance package and found them jobs. The national competitor closed up a year later because the city could no longer give them the kickbacks that they had promised them because they weren't collecting that tax any more. Former customers keep calling me wanting me to start that company back up because they no longer have that service here, my answer is "fuck no, do it yourself".

So, long story short, I am not going to be consumed with fighting "city hall" every waking moment. I will enjoy watching the Stanley Cup Playoffs on NBC Sportsnetwork and the NBC Network.

If you want to fight city hall, please do. I will support you, but from time to time I will have to take care of my own personal business, much like many of the men under General Washington's command did.

2) Getting ID costs money.
3) If forced to have ID to vote, black people (who are poor) will not vote

It doesn't matter if the state offers to provide free photo ID (like PA), and no one ever asks how these people are able to get by in life without photo ID considering you need a photo ID to do everything from buying cigarettes to driving a car. I suspect a ton of well connected democrats were not audited even though they should have been.

How else does the IRS have the time to audit all these obviously innocent people?

Perhaps that's the real story. The IRS plays Chicago politics by giving Obama donors a break, but then they have all this spare time and personnel they have to use on something... so....

543 come on now, voter fraud...the very idea of it is laughable, just mere paranoia, except for the voter fraud we've already documented.

544 I, on the other hand, think we're heading for a Clockwork Orange society, where ultraviolence is just part of everyday life for govt sponges. If you cross the line or get in your benevolent govts way, well then you get re-educated.

546 Your "internet connection" relies on satellite connections maintained by such entities as Comcast and Time Warner- all members of the EVIL MSM. So, unless you think they maintain those *for free*, your internet connection pays to help them stay in business

Well yeah, agent told the judge that James Rosen was a criminal co conspirator at best to get the warrants. So yeah, we should all be royally pissed, at a minimum. As for the Republicans, with a few exceptions,...it depends if it disrupts their lunch plans.
