China People's Daily: "The relationship between China and North Korea has reached its lowest point since 1953." [Purp]

This is one of the official news organs of the PRC saying this, so that means something. It ain't some renegade bloggers or underground paper that simply hasn't been raided for impure thoughts yet.

China has its difficulties in dealing with the North Korean issue. The US and its military allies have enhanced their strategic deployment around the peninsula. Such military deployments exert huge negative impact on China's security interests. However, China cannot blame the US for making these deployments because according to the US, these arrangements are aimed at North Korea.

China has to punish North Korea for its stirring up regional instability. But China cannot permanently cut off its military assistance to North Korea as the West is trying to persuade China to do.

In short, we cannot simply "abandon" North Korea. No matter the nature of the regime in North Korea, China always has security interests in the Korean Peninsula.

Beijing has already adjusted its policies toward North Korea. Targeting North Korea's unfriendly actions, which have threatened peace on the peninsula, China has issued warnings and punishments. The relationship between China and North Korea has reached its lowest point since 1953.

Couple of takeaways here:

1) The PRC very explicitly did NOT condemn, or even mildly rebuke, US repositioning in response to DPRK saber rattling, indeed they're excusing it as a perfectly reasonable response.

2) The US rational for repositioning was accepted at face value without question -- which implies the DPRK are in fact crazy loons from the PRC's POV.

3) The " North Korea's unfriendly actions, which have threatened peace on the peninsula" language is unequivocal. The PRC is explicitly blaming the DPRK for being crazy loons inconveniently stirring shit up.

I'm guessing this is why the DPRK backed down a couple of days ago. They twisted the tiger's tail once too often and caught a face full of sharp claws.

30 The Nork's latest round of nutty has beneficiaries. China's not on the list (nor the US). Benefactors are: 1) the Norks, who simply have to act unbalanced now and then to keep their blackmail con credible; 2) South Korea, whose security guarantees are strengthened each round; 3) Japan, whose case for stronger military and nuclear investments (which have taken a big hit lately) are made an easier sell to its people. China's got to be pissed. Last thing it wants, ever, is a militarized Japan and a stronger South Korea.

The Chinese are acting in their rational self interest, for the reasons expressed in this thread previously. The unstable little Nork troll is going to force an increase in Western military presence, which complicates things for China. That makes me wonder about what sort of talks the U.S. and China might be engaged in. Containment in the case of the Norks might work, because without some big, sweet, juicy concessions from the West, Jim Jong Runt will not be able to live up to the bizarre, and ludicrous accomplishments of his father, and grandfather. Which puts his life at risk, and if everyone, including China, tells Butterball to go suck eggs, it will only be a matter of time before he suffers an 'accident'.

The Norks have their own English language news....and I'll be interested to how they respond to the PRC. Little Kimmy knows he's been taken out behind the woodshed, and spanked, and his military knows it too.

85 The thing the Chinese are particularly upset about is the idea that South Korea, Japan and Taiwan might expand their deployment of ABMs or even go nuclear in response to Nork antics.

Right now the Chinese can get some mileage from sabre rattling by their deployment of missiles. If all of China's neighbors were nuclear powers, the stakes went up a lot. If they had large, credible ABM forces, the Chinese have to rattle their sabers a lot louder to get the same effect and that might have the undesired effect of causing their neighbors go go nuclear if they have not already. South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Australia could probably put together a half dozen nuclear weapons each inside a month if they were motivated enough. If one of them went nuclear, there is a good chance that the others would as well.

The part about not abandoning Korea or cutting off military assistance seems to be saying that China will not allow a Korean reunion but it might just invade and replace the current leadership with a less crazy puppet.

94 Steyn has a great column up today calling Obama and Hillary's behavior depraved. Excellent choice of words. They are depraved.

95 Debauched and depraved. And not in a good way.

96 I've never heard of "Rock Center with Brian Williams" until I read the sidebar, and then I read that among its many highlights, Chelsea Clinton interviewed a fucking animated gecko. Go figure.

We're slackers. Though to be fair, I think the usual "First!" comment that pops up on every post should be counted as off topic.

And they canceled it? When their only competition was Honey Boo Boo's three thumbed baby sister?

99 What shut down Kim Joke Ill was the tough message passed on to him by J. Fkn Kerry; who said in no uncertain terms that if the Norks launch a nuke strike that this administration will retaliate with the Biden Doctrine of firing both barrels through the door - and nuke Hiroshima and Nagasaki - since that is a proven winning strategy.

The country is in the very best of hands.

102 Beyond the external issues, the global economic condition means China has lots of her own slave labor and doesn't need any NOrks.

Also nice to see the PLA realize they are fifteen years away from playing hardball with us.

104 They never did spot the ammonia leak, but they
replaced a pump assembly with a spare that was stored nearby. The new
pump seems to be performing well.

I'm intrigued by that 'close by'. Does that mean they have a small storage shed out back or something?

109 OT - but funneh. I was out doing some chore this morning and car drives down our driveway. Turns out they are neighbors from about a mile away. Lady gets out and asks me if I have seen a cow. Turns out they had a steer get loose and it was last seen running towards our land. She gave me her cell and her husbands cell and I told her I would take the 4 wheeler back into the woods to look for him. Found him right away in one of our deer food plots. He is not just a steer - he is a Texas Longhorn steer. Complete with Muad'dib ventilating horns. I named him Vlad the Impaler after the third time he charged me and head butted the 4 wheeler.

Vlad apparently does NOT want to go home. We have spent the last 3 hours chasing him all around our 65 acres. We eventually got him chased into one of our fenced pastures. High fives all around. Vlad was cool with the pasture until he realized he was trapped. Then he trotted over to the fence - and then trotted right through it. Electrified and everything. Vlad the Impaler sliced like an F-in hammer.

So now my neighbor has 5 guys coming on horses - apparently they can throw ropes too. Another guy has a tranquilizer gun. I'll be on the ATV with my son on foot. Be back later - I think.

110 #109 Well, Muad'dib, thanks for a glimpse of life in your neighborhood!

Good luck and stay safe!

112 I'm still really bugged by Nakoula thing.

Some say well 'don't feel bad because He was a bad guy.'

ok but still isn't it the intent of Hillary and Obama to jail a private citizen for making a video they didn't like, an in doing that would have been breaking the Deal to uphold the Constitution when voted into office?
I mean when Hillary says, "We will make sure that the person who made that film is arrested and prosecuted" to Wood's father Isn't the INTENT what matters here?

Did They Know He was already lapsed on the Probation deal?

Did Obama and Hillary know that Nikoula had a history that could be prosecutable?

113 and thn i wonder How this Video came to Morsi and Egypts attention..

Posted by: willow at May 11, 2013 04:09 PM (nqBYe)

114 Seems to me you can read other things into that press release. Mainly I got that DRPK is nuts and China is now trying to to distance themselves from them.

So what intel does China have that is making them say "We are not really with them, so if they do anything loco it ain't on us right?"

115 @104:

Not so much a shed, but spare pumps already in place out on the trusses. Switch hoses and whatnot and turn on the new one. Already been done a couple of times.

116 #109: Yeah, longhorns are definitely serious critters, and not too cow-like. The first time I ever saw one, I thought to myself "My God, that's an ugly draft horse."

117 BTW, China People's Daily isn't the local official party line. That paper is specifically an English languange publication intended for foreigners.

You don't need any special intel when you got their public statements.

Posted by: @PurpAv at May 12, 2013 03:10 PM (4ckfP)

119 That paper is specifically an English languange publication intended for foreigners.

Which makes the statements even more damning -- they're allowing and inflicting a severe loss of face on the DPRK, and doing it in the eyes of the outsiders which only increases the shame.
