Holy Crap: HHS Secretary Sebilus Is Extorting Money From Health Care Industry To Promote ObamaCare

Are you kidding me?

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has gone hat in hand to health industry executives, asking them to make large financial donations to help with the effort to implement President Obama’s landmark health-care law.

Her unusual fundraising push comes after Congress has repeatedly rejected the Obama administration’s requests for additional funds to set up the Affordable Care Act, leaving Health and Human Services to implement the president’s signature legislative accomplishment on a shoestring budget.

Sebelius has, over the past three months, made multiple phone calls to health industry executives, community organizations and church groups and directly asked that they contribute to non-profits that are working to enroll uninsured Americans and increase awareness of the law, according to a Health and Human Services official familiar with the Secretary’s outreach who spoke on condition of anonymity.

What do these calls sound like, "Hi I'm HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. You may recall I have tremendous discretionary power over your company and entire industry. Would you like to donate to my favorite cause? You would? Thank you so much."

How much power over the healthcare industry does ObamaCare give Sebelius?

There are more than 2,500 references to the secretary of HHS in the health care law (in most cases she’s simply mentioned as “the Secretary”). A further breakdown finds that there are more than 700 instances in which the Secretary is instructed that she “shall” do something, and more than 200 cases in which she “may” take some form of regulatory action if she chooses. On 139 occasions, the law mentions decisions that the “Secretary determines.” At times, the frequency of these mentions reaches comic heights. For instance, one section of the law reads: “Each person to whom the Secretary provided information under subsection (d) shall report to the Secretary in such manner as the Secretary determines appropriate.”

The powers given to Sebelius are wide ranging. In the coming years, if she remains in office, the former Kansas governor will be able to determine what type of insurance coverage every American is required to have. She can influence what hospitals can participate in certain plans, can set up health insurance exchanges within states against their will, and even regulate McDonald’s Happy Meals. She’ll run pilot programs that Democrats have set up in an effort to control costs, and be in a position to dole out billions of dollars in grant money.

But the full breadth of her powers will be known only over time, due to the ambiguity of the language in many parts of the health care legislation. As conservatives make the case for repealing ObamaCare over the course of the next several years, it will be imperative to highlight the arbitrary new powers given to an unelected bureaucrat.

I'm sure people who decline her generous invitation to pay up won't suffer and negative consequences. Why it's not like we just found out today Obama used the IRS to target conservatives. Oh, right. And naturally there won't be a little something extra in the regulations for those that pony up. They are just doing it out of the goodness of their tiny, black, capitalist hearts.

You may recall, Sebelius was previously cited for violating federal law for mixing politics with her official duties.

"Of
all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victim

sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those
who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do

True. What I meant was that even ones with waivers were finding out the waivers expired before doing any actual good.

As his (union) plant's accountant John knew that his companies "cadillac" coverage would be going away with Ocare since they weren't among the favored. Dropping coverage was the *nicest* thing his company could do for their employees since few had the cash on hand to pay the extra taxes on approximately $15,000 in extra income those benefits would count as. Sadly, I think he was glad to find he was dying when he did instead of lingering on to need continued treatment without the insurance.

201 it's all 'single payer' after that.

The funniest part of that whole entire fucking mindfuck...the part that the left has never - and will never - figure out...is that once that one big single payor in the sky controls everything, and that payor is named CMS (kinda like now, if you're poor or old), they (CMS) will *literally* end up subcontracting...er...outsourcing payment of those new "single payor" claims to whom...?

Yep. If you guessed well, you came up with "The exact same fucking commercial payors that adjudicate many of their Medicare and Medicaid claims today."

...And the wheels on the bus go round and round. And nobody's ever fixing jack shit until they quit hiding the cost and pain of the cost of medical procedures from the customer, and they get the goddamned Federal Government out of the way.

According to the report, Chomsky and 20 other academics wrote Hawking that they are very disappointed that he had accepted the invitation since "Israel systematically discriminates against the Palestinians who make up 20% of its population in ways that would be illegal in Britain." (Ynet)

289 Stephen Hawking's decision to boycott an Israeli conference in protest at the state's 46-year occupation of Palestine was derided as hypocritical by some, who pointed out that the celebrated scientist and author uses Israeli technology in the computer equipment that allows him to function.

Hawking, 71, has suffered from motor neurone disease for the past 50 years, and relies on a computer-based system to communicate.

According to Shurat HaDin, an Israel law centre which represents victims of terrorism, the equipment has been provided by the hi-tech firm, Intel, since 1997.

"Hawking's decision to join the boycott of Israel is quite hypocritical for an individual who prides himself on his whole intellectual accomplishment. His whole computer-based communications system runs on a chip designed by Israel's Intel team. I suggest if he truly wants to pull out of Israel he should also pull out his Intel Core i7 from his tablet," said Nitsana Darshan-Leitner of Shurat HaDin.

Anything that can be said against them and their agenda, especially reminding the country that they are prohibited from their actions by law, will do.

This administration has backed down in the face of public opinion before. It's just that nobody's challenging them right now. That's how bullies operate: they're real big until somebody calls them out for a fight, then they run or wuss out.

It was taken out of the Immigration Bill this week.

So the one thing that we actually need...increased Border Security...is now no longer in that bill.

372 Shamelessly lifted from today's Goldberg File:
Original Sin
The ur-sin of conservatism in the liberal imagination isn't racism, sexism, faith in some Biblical sky god, or even the view that consenting adults should be allowed to commit capitalist acts in private. The first sin of conservatism is Relevance. It is a betrayal. A heresy. Wherever conservatives (or libertarians) threaten liberal power, that is precisely where you will find the "worst" conservatives. That's why I've been saying for years that the best working definition of a "fascist" in American politics is simply "a conservative who's winning an argument."
It's Always 'Old News'
The most frustrating thing about Democratic scandals is the eye-rolling. Liberals feign ennui the way French princesses would yawn when the court jester failed to amuse. They act as if only crazy people and Republican partisans -- to the extent they see a difference -- would care about Bill Clinton's rapacious sexual appetites and lies, or John Kerry's fudged history, or Barack Obama's racist pastor and terrorist friends. And because liberals control the commanding heights of the media, their lofty diffidence pollutes the public discourse in ways Republicans could never pull off. The Andrea Mitchells and George Stephanopouloses (Stephanopouli?) will always find that Rush Limbaugh insulting Sandra Fluke raises "troubling issues for Republicans," but the corpse of an underage transvestite Laotian prostitute wedged between three bricks of uncut heroin and a box of Krugerrands in some Kennedy's car trunk is simply another example of the tragic burdens that come with being a member of "America's Family."
Republicans have to force Democratic scandals into the public mind. Democrats merely need to drop them like a ref dropping a hockey puck for the media to go into a hacking frenzy of hackery.
The Clintons were the true masters of manipulating the media and the public when it came to spinning scandals as "old news." In fairness, they got good at it because they needed to. Any interest in Clinton's scandals was an "obsession." Any new information was "known a long time ago." Many forget, but MoveOn.org began as an allegedly "citizen-powered" grassroots effort deployed to get the media and Congress to drop its "obsession" with the Lewinsky scandal. At the time, the founders insisted they had no larger left-wing agenda and were in fact moderate normal Americans who just wanted the country to "move on" with it already. They were, needless to say, liars.
Anyway, get ready for a marathon of eye-rolling from liberal journalists, lefty bloggers, and Democratic spinners. Now that Hillary Clinton is the heir apparent, expect her old sock-puppets to be activated like so many sleeper agents in Telefon. It's going to be "been there, done that" in response to everything about Benghazi.
Here's Patrick Ventrell yesterday responding to the Benghazi hearings: "We don't believe that new information was necessarily presented that hadn't been already either entered into the public record through congressional testimony or investigated by the ARB or otherwise looked at." Jay Carney responded to ABC's story that the State Department did in fact politically scrub the talking points by saying, in effect, there's nothing new here. You can be sure Paul Begala and that crew are already doing their eye-rolling exercises and buying new safety gear to prevent scrotal torsion from all their spinning.
Now I understand that some of this is P.R. 101. But what makes the Clintons special is the breathtaking scope of their cynicism. They rely on the media's support and gently cue them to act on it. They take advantage of the public's short attention span, and they know that if you say something is old news people who don't follow the news will believe you (the genius of The Daily Show is that it relies on the same pseudo-informed ignorance of its biggest fans). The passive/aggressive nature of the old-news approach actually turns people who care about what's going on and who follow the news into the crazy obsessives.
That -- and I can't stress this enough -- was the whole point of Hillary's "What difference does it make!?" outburst. It was to activate her fans and friends to assert that this whole line of questioning was -- and remains -- utterly illegitimate. Only weirdoes would care about that.
It's only going to get worse.

398 New Benghazi spin: Politics had nothing to do wit it. It was a CIA/ State turf war.

Posted by: Jim in Virginia at May 10, 2013 07:10 PM (snnM4)

399 This media obsession with defending all democrats began long before Obama. Anyone old enough to remember Monicagate knows the MSM spiked the story and ignored it for 6 months to begin with, then continued to mouth the left's line that it was all about personal sex and the GOP was just trying to negate 2 elections they lost by lynching Clinton for partisan reasons over a blow-job.

Had the "don't grant anything to the other team" mentality existed in the '60s, comedians like Lenny Bruce would have been defending LBJ and the press would have run stories about how great the war in Vietnam was going so he could have coasted to re-election instead of being forced to decline to run.

This isn't just about Obama being "THE FIRST EVERYTHING PRESIDENT", it's about the left (including the press) not granting anything to the right on any issue or any person and defending everything about the left and all it's issues.

So now we have the press condemning Mark Sanford for personal sexual misconduct and excusing Obama and Hillary for gross dereliction of duty directly resulting in deaths of US personnel. We get "The Assassination of President Bush" and dozens of movies telling us what an evil, imperialist move the Iraq and Afghanistan wars were, while Obama gets "Zero Dark Thirty".

Welcome to how it is now. Stop subsidizing your enemies is all you can try to do.

420 The Chicago Way, to be sure.

But the comparison to Nixon is unfair to Nixon. All the things we are supposed to remember and despise him for - spying on private citizens, illegal fundraising, lying to the people, obstructing justice to protect himself and those close to him - are serious, but he was significantly less of a practitioner of those crimes than either LBJ or the revered JFK. Then, as now, the press overlooked most Democratic scandals.

I'm somewhat offended by the comparison to Nixon. Nixon was undisputably a ratshit pol, but Nixon *was* right about Alger Hiss, and China, and while he was forced out for chickensh*t 'lying' about trivial (real) crimes, his actual domestic policies were very much mainstream. Nixon is the father of the EPa, for those too young or stupid to remember.
- and in it's early history, the EPA did wonderful things to improve air and water quality in the country.
Sebelius is a ratship machine pol in the mold of Harry Truman or the Chicago thugs. Her actions at HHS are a great hidden scandal.
