Koch Brothers To Buy Tribune Newspapers?

This would be delicious.

Other than financing a few fringe libertarian publications, the Kochs have mostly avoided media investments. Now, Koch Industries, the sprawling private company of which Charles G. Koch serves as chairman and chief executive, is exploring a bid to buy the Tribune Company’s eight regional newspapers, including The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune, The Baltimore Sun, The Orlando Sentinel and The Hartford Courant.

By early May, the Tribune Company is expected to send financial data to serious suitors in what will be among the largest sales of newspapers by circulation in the country. Koch Industries is among those interested, said several people with direct knowledge of the sale who spoke on the condition they not be named. Tribune emerged from bankruptcy on Dec. 31 and has hired JPMorgan Chase and Evercore Partners to sell its print properties.

The papers, valued at roughly $623 million, would be a financially diminutive deal for Koch Industries, the energy and manufacturing conglomerate based in Wichita, Kan., with annual revenue of about $115 billion.

Politically, however, the papers could serve as a broader platform for the Kochs’ laissez-faire ideas. The Los Angeles Times is the fourth-largest paper in the country, and The Tribune is No. 9, and others are in several battleground states, including two of the largest newspapers in Florida, The Orlando Sentinel and The Sun Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale. A deal could include Hoy, the second-largest Spanish-language daily newspaper, which speaks to the pivotal Hispanic demographic.

Yes, newspapers are dying but they still have their uses. The key to buying them would be not branding them as "conservative" (libertarian in actually) but keep them "mainstream". Don't ghettoize yourself, just make some key personnel appointments and let nature take its course.

The New York Times doesn't call itself "liberal" it just does its thing. Conservatives need to adopt that model.

After Hearst bought out the de Young founding family, the formerly moderate Commie-cle went absolutely full apeshit libtard turned up to eleven and has been that way ever since. Without any doubt one of the worst major metro dailies in America.

The other lesson from the left we should learn is to buy up those small-town papers. I recon most of them would go for a song when available. Cut off the left wing drumbeat out where people are naturally more prone to think for themselves.

Any morons around here know how to start and run a nonprofit? Truman, I'm looking at you... I'd be happy to run it, but my time don't come cheap and my wife and I have no money. Like I said, I have a wife. And a seven year old. And a boat. And grad school. And a serious landscaping habit.

With the brainpower available here, we should be able to turn things around, at least around the small towns and rural areas, with the proper focus and some financial backing. Would be a nice way to get some funemployed morons back to earning money again, too.

So, it's hard to tell what "circulation" is these days because they include "electronic editions", however that's measured.

But...the Chronicle has circulation of about 230,000 which is half of the San Jose Mercury News, which I guess serves as the real regional newspaper there.

I'd expect they could easily fix the LAT just by focusing on...I dunno, the major industry of that city!

They, I guess, don't want to seem too tabloidy or to concentrate on the business to compete with Variety, but there's no reason to pick up the LAT.

Whatever you think of National Review, it's still the granddaddy of conservative publications. Its print edition has a circulation of 166,000 and, I think, at its height, 250k. By contrast, Newsweek at it's height had a circulation of 4 million. So, I don't think this business model would work.

177 You want to make a print news magazine or paper viable? Go Fleet Street: sensationalist, filled with unsubstantiated rumor, scandal, and innuendo, openly biased, with a highly sexually suggestive foldout on page 3. Scattered among celebrity scandal and other picayune bullshit would be stories that matter, otherwise known as the truth.

For example, the truth is the First Lady dressed in what looked like a Big Bird costume at Obama's first Inauguration. If at least one newspaper or magazine had the guts or inclination to point this out, it would've sold off the racks.

Taking it further, questions have arisen over the years regarding Hillary Clinton's sexual preferences. Headlines reading, 'Is Hillary Gay?' would attract all kinds of attention. You get the idea. Go low. Take it downstairs and keep it there. Save the highbrow think pieces for the National Review or Weekly Standard.

Say what you want about the British popular press, but they know how to reach those we call low-information voters, those Americans stupid enough to believe Mitt Romney was a greedy rich guy cartoon who causes cancer.

As others have noted, these properties (Chicago Tribune and LA Times) have established names, circulation measured in the millions, websites with huge amounts of traffic, and credibility outside the non-conservative community. Also, not everyone gets their primary information from the Internet.

So, your attitude is extremely self-referential and short-sighted. I would suggest that you are falling into Pauline Kael territory, except that the evidence suggests that she never actually said the silly thing that wound up being attributed to her for all eternity.

A major network would also be a good investment, politically (and, depending on the network, financially as well). However, the Big Three are not likely to be for sale anytime in the near future, so the Koch brothers would be well advised to take this if they can get it and wait for another opportunity later.

191 troyriser -- Ace would agree with you 100%. I don't think a conservative could do it. Coming up with 90% of crap content and fluff in order to slip in 10% of real content, or as you call it truth content? Conservatives as a group tend to be too serious for our own good to pull off such a feat. The 90% of junk content would be too painful to come up with or our principles wouldn't allow us to exaggerate or make up stories.

What principles are you referring to? And who said anything about exaggerating or making stuff up? Our political opponents are, by and large, an army of Anthony Weiners, a target-rich environment if ever there was one. It's just that no one on the right is digging into their lives, looking for the good stuff. Those reporters we used to call investigative journalists are currently on hiatus (unless a Republican is involved) or actively shilling for the other team.

Any principles that get in the way of defeating these Marxist weasels need to be reconsidered. While we're playing by the Marquis de Queensbury rules, the boys from Chicago are taking the good Marquis to the alley out back, beating him with pipes, and stuffing his body in the trunk for later disposal.

Shit, the Roanoke Times is more liberal than the New York Times, and they are proud of it. This paper will print any story that could even remotely damage a Republican, but it has been well over a decade since they even attempted a story into corruption in the local city government, and trust me, with no oversight by our media, our government makes Chicago look "clean".

It pisses me off knowing how much BS is printed and is accepted as the truth. I've had stories done on me or companies I have worked for that had so many errors that I now don't even believe the MLB standings that they print in the sports section.

Troy, just look at the good work being done by bloggers on the right, most of whom get no compensation, and have to hold down a job to food in their bellies.

If you had a genuinely conservative newspaper with decent financing, you could hire many of those people, and PAY them to do full-time what they were doing before part-time, and guarantee them a wider audience, to boot.

304 Tammy, I'm guessing garage. If not, you'll have to trial and error it - plug a lamp into an outlet in the garage. Flip an unlabeled breaker - start at the bottom, small 20amp ones, check lamp, repeat until lamp is off.

305 I grew up with the old Tribune of Colonel McCormick, which, as they used to joke, was to the right of Atilla the Hun. The Colonel had his manias, such as trying to introduce simplified spelling in his paper (I grew up think that "through" was spelled "thru"). The paper's motto, "World's Greatest Newspaper" was proudly splashed across the front page (which is where the Trib's radio station WGN got its call letters from). Each day would have a front-page political cartoon crawn by the likes of Robert Parrish, usually featuring a superbly muscled Uncle Sam rolling up his sleeves as he prepared to beat the crap out some hirsute leftist.

They also had their peculiarities in editing. I remember that the day Lee Elia made his infamous rant about Cubs fans, the headline on the Trib's sports page read:

ELIA TO FANS: KISS MY ASS

which last exactly one edition, until someone on the copy desk sobered up and killed it. Ah, those were the days!

So, if the Koch Brothers do buy it and make it a conservative organ again, it'll just be returning the Trib to its roots. In the meantime, it's amusing to see the liberal chorus chanting its horror at the thought of a paper breaking ranks.

What does it switch? Most likely, if it were going to cause a problem, it would have been inside the switchbox and the problem has come and gone, if it isn't smoldering... Hard to imagine what would cause that though, unless the switch disintegrated.

333 I'm not in the mood to think tonight so this won't be a brilliant commentary but while I'd like to see it happen to at least start getting some critical reporting out there like from the British papers, I don't know how well it would work. Conrad Black's former Canadian papers tried this and weren't nearly as conservative/libertarian as I/you/we would have hoped.

All the wire stuff is liberal unless you do major rewrites using your own staff and the press service allows that type of thing.

Commentary was fine with it being split roughly a third between conservative, libertarian and liberal-leftist (often as guest columnists but they also had e.g. Maureen Dowd as a regular) for the sake of balance. (Not that it stopped liberal-left critics from complaining about the "evil Right taking over opinion in Canada!!11!!" just like it doesn't help with Fox News even though, especially currently, it's not all that conservative.)

And many of the ordinary reporters and ordinary staff writers were still the product of liberal journalism programmes including an arts section that regularly ticked me off (although not to the extent of leftist rags in the city).

OK. About ten years ago VMI Citadel played in CLT.
They had a B1-B fly over. The plane had been in town a week or so checking shit out. The game was in Memorial stadium, only seats 12,000

The entire corp, both VMI and Citadel were on the field before the game. We looked for the fly over.

You could not hear him, he came over at about 1500 ft and turned on his after burners about a 1/4 out. I was at the far end and jet fuel rained down on me. The fucker had full after burners on, split the goal posts and then we thought he was going to run into the Bank of America building, 75 stories, 1/2 mile away. He sweep the wings back and was fucking GONE!.

Plus 200MB of video. But there was such a stiff crosswind the GA pilots were wobbling every time they landed when the tree break cut off the wind. Wind also messed up the sound of the warbirds and their radial engines

Only if you switch the one that shorted or the temporary. But if the Garage Breaker is tripped, the other lights hooked up to that circuit won't work, either.

Okay, so turning on the one that sparked won't burn the house down?

If it shorted, the breaker will be off and nothing will happen.

If it is cross-wired or improperly grounded and the breaker didn't shut off, you could have another incident.

Like I said, check the other lights that are close to it...porch light, outside light, mudroom...whatever is closest to the garage switch that shorted. If those don't work, the breaker is likely blown and the problem switch is safe until you reset the breaker.

437 I was saving this for the ONT, but I haven't got all night:

Orbital Sciences Corporation successfully launched their Antares rocket from Wallops Island, VA this afternoon. It was the first test flight of this rocket, which will be used to launch the Cygnus cargo ship to the ISS. The flight went off without a hitch.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_b1R3NetAo

It looks like a camera fell over at liftoff or something. It was a bit scary watching it live. At 2:00 in, tilt your head 90º to the right to get the proper perspective.

The main payload was a dummy version of Cygnus, but Antares also orbited three small experimental cubesats that are powered by smartphones.

http://www.phonesat.org/index.php

Another interesting thing about this launch is that the Antares first stage uses two Russian NK-33 engines. They were originally built for the ill-fated N-1 moon rocket which failed to reach orbit in four attempts between 1969 and 1972. After the program was cancelled, the Soviet government ordered the hardware destroyed. The engines were hidden in a warehouse where they sat for 30 years until after the fall of the Soviet Union. They are a very efficient design, and today is the first time they were used to put a payload into orbit, after all those years (the engines are actually about 40 years old now). So I imagine some elderly Russian rocket scientists were also celebrating this launch.

460 Okay. Here I am, troyriser.

Re: exaggerating and making up stuff, I was thinking in terms of a National Emquirer type publication as a template whose content is mostly exaggerated and made up stuff. I dont know your Fleet Street reference.

Also, I should have been more specific about what Ace has said on this subject. Do you remember reading a post of his about conservatives buying up women's magazines and starting up cooking and entertainment websites? Well, if you didn't, his idea was using a format that was 90% content that LIV's find interesting and then slipping in conservative messages. That was the context of my reply to you.

I totally agree with you though. It has been
maddening watching our last 2 presidential candidates insist on running "honorable" campaigns while the opposition runs the dirtiest and dishonest campaigns themselves through media surrogates. Its even worse than that though. As as soon as someone on our side starts to push back, we form the circular firing squad and insist that we must rise above the mud. We our own worst enemies. Maybe conservatives by nature aren't political creatures? Our lives are focused on family, Church, and work, not winning at all costs.

You're probably very safe, but to be absolutely certain, you should remove your bra. A small spark might have lodged in the fabric, starting a slow smoldering fire that could overcome you with smoke while you sleep.

Take the bra outside and hang it in the tree next to the security cam.

The worst electrical is always in light industrial buildings. Nothing's labeled, unless it's labeled wrong. And there's always some weird wiring shit. When we moved into our present shop last year, I found that one whole side of the building had outlets that were literally burnt and melted. Most also had outlet boxes full of sawdust (one of the previous tenants was a cabinet maker). Took me a week to redo the wiring before we could move in.

stage uses two Russian NK-33 engines. They were originally built for
the ill-fated N-1 moon rocket which failed to reach orbit in four
attempts between 1969 and 1972."

Fine engine. Just not big enough.

The American moon rocket, the Saturn V, used five F-1 engines in the first stage.

The first stage of the Soviet equivalent booster had thirty engines.

It turned out to be very very difficult to manage things like unwanted resonance.

Doesn't matter if newspapers are dying or not. For that kind of Koch walking-around money, buy them up, close the print shops down, sell off the machinery for scrap, write the whole thing off. Businesses do this all the time, gobbling and cannibalizing other businesses and spitting out the bones. Result? All those rags are gone sooner rather than later. Koch can play with the websites, which oddly enough are, and will continue to be, on an even playing field with any other person or group who can afford a domain name and figure out an anchor tag.

492 "I'm liking the arced wire answer, cuz it's a temporary switch the

Ah. "Temporary switch" put in by contractors that is making sparky sparky.

If this were my wife in my house, and if I were advising my wife by phone, I would:

-- Tell her where the master breaker for everything is (she knows, actually)

-- Tell her to pull it

-- Tell her to go spend the night in a hotel

-- Call the contractor in the morning to tell him his ass is thoroughly fired

-- Call an electrical pro to find and fix what the contractor fucked up

-- Send the contractor the hotel bill and the electrician's bill

-- Send the state contractors' license board a strongly worded letter

Seriously, this is electricity, and more houses burn to the ground in the middle of the night, killing everyone inside, due to electrical reasons more than any other single cause. Do not take any chances.

The Left learned long ago how to establish organizational networks. Everyone has heard about ACORN, of course, but there is usually an ACORN-like organization in every state. In my home state of Indiana, that organization is called the Citizens Action Coalition (CAC). There is also an environmentally focused sister organization whose name escapes me right now. Point is, there are groups like these throughout the country. Supposedly, these groups conduct issue-oriented informational campaigns, usually via door-to-door or telephone solicitation. Public education isn't really their purpose. Their purpose is to bankroll those commonly called 'professional Leftists', who do quite nicely, thank you. These 'organizers' devote every waking hour to promoting Leftist causes and candidates. It's their job. They coordinate their efforts via a national network. Years ago, that network was informally called The Hudson Bay Network, but I've never seen that name in print. I just know it exists.ACORN and these other groups are now being partly subsidized, usually indirectly, by the federal government, which is currently being controlled by people who have, at some point in their careers, worked for groups like ACORN and CAC.We have a choice. We can copy their methods or do something different yet equally effective. In order for a network to work, we need to actually pay people. Big believers in capitalism, we should at least understand that volunteer efforts can go only so far. Bills need to be paid. Children need to be fed and clothed. We need committed operatives solely devoted to promoting those things we believe in. Romney's team of richly paid consultants were ineffective in part because, from what I've read, they didn't believe in what they were doing. You better believe President Obama's highly paid consultants are also deeply committed to their cause. Giving a damn makes a difference.

And I probably misspoke about the switch being temporary; it's just that it wasn't there before. I mean, the box and everything was there, but they put a new switch in it.

507 American newspapers are dying, not because the media has no purpose, but because the people running these corporations are incompetent fools. Nobody reads the LA Times anymore because it's DULL. They don't cover any story that's critical of the people in power. They've tightened the wagon, and will only allow the same tired voices a platform.

Buy up the Tribune Papers for a song, fire the deadwood, hire real talent, upgrade the equipment, and rethink the business model, The LA Times could be made profitable again.

Posted by: Richard Steel at April 22, 2013 08:31 AM (SUlmX)

508 conservatives do adopt that model, liberals insist on labeling conservative media outlets as conservative media outlets.

Fox News does not label itself republican or conservative, and they are not, but because they do not sufficiently attack conservatives, they are considered conservative by liberals.

These newspapers have a better than even chance to perform like Myspace did. shunned by the current readership, unable to attract new readers.

I keep bringing it up on this site but think it bears repeating: prior to the Civil War, the Whig Party fell apart and the Republican Party came into being because Whig leadership failed to challenge the Democrats over the expansion of slavery into the territories. Now the issue is socialism vs. free market capitalism, Marxist-derived collective authoritarianism vs. individual freedom and self-determination. The two approaches are irreconcilable. In the end, just as with slavery, we must be either one thing or the other. We can't be both.

The Republican Establishment thinks the conservative base must accede to their go along and get alongagenda and good loser strategies because, well, where else are we going to go? We can remind them of the fate of the Whigs, who thought the same thing under similar circumstances.

Personally, I think we should form a new party and call it the Democrat Party. That way, we can swipe millions of votes from those same Low Information Voters who can't be bothered to tell the difference between 'Democrat' and 'Democratic'.

Posted by: troyriser at April 22, 2013 10:22 AM (vtiE6)

510 Finally, a smart move.

Think of all the money the Koch brothers wasted on the last election cycle. Buying ads to prop up the same media outlets that tears down conservatives.

How about we just skip the middle man?

I'd be fine if the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy "sat out" a few elections and just bought out media outlets. Far more bang for the buck.

"Finding conservative editors and journalists will be the hardest part, hell even moderates."

It will be easier to teach retired cops, firefighters and city employees to write grammatically than it would be to teach journalism majors to write honestly.
