The curious story of Terrorista #1 and Two "Globe Reporters" Crashing Her Apartment

As usual, and sadly, when you want in-depth news coverage of American events, you should probably start with the British Press.

In this case, it's the Daily Mail. And, boy, do they have a weird story today about the 3 people who were taken into custody following the capture of Jihadi Terror Suspect #2.

The main part of the story is getting the attention, and prompted the Drudge link: one of the Bombers friends taken into custody had a "Terrorista #1" license plate.

But there is something else about the story that is buried at the end that bothers me. This is a case where a lot of time will be spent determining the nature and extent of these bombers international ties, whether the first suspects relatively recent trips to Russia meant anything significant, and whether they were part of a larger cell. Keeping that in mind, these paragraphs are buried in the Mail story:

The neighbour said that when the the police raided the apartment there were armed officers on the tennis court out the back on a tennis court lying down with their guns pointed towards the apartment.

The FBI later brought a U-Haul truck to the rear of the apartment but did not take anything away.

The neighbour said that when the boys were led out she heard ‘scuffles’ and that they were led away with their hands in zip ties.

The neighbour said ‘I’ve not spoken to them since the bombings. They have thick accents so I find it hard to understand them anyway.

Two Russian speaking men in their early 20s later arrived at the apartment and told reporters they were journalists from the Boston Globe.

They then entered the apartment through an unlocked patio door. When asked what they were doing they said: ‘We are friends of theirs. They are talking, they are talking’ and closed the door.

When Mail Online rang the City desk of the Boston Globe, a man said: ‘We’re very busy right now. Consider us informed’.

If accurate, this seems very strange to me. Does the Globe have two 20-something year old Russian speaking men on staff? Did they send two "journalists" out to "check out/gain entry" to the apartments of the 3 people in custody? Were these guys lying to gain entry? If the Globe doesn't have these folks on staff, who were they?

I really doubt that these self-proclaimed "friends" of the 3 people in custody went over and let themselves in to the apartment out of an abundance of concern for whether the plants were watered or pets fed. If I'm right to be skeptical, what were they doing there? When did they leave? How long did they stay? Did they remove anything?

Apparently, the Daily Mail's journalists found this behavior odd also, as they called the Globe to report it.

Maybe there is an innocent explanation for all this. After all, the FBI had already swept the place. But, given the story arc of this case, I don't think this story should be ignored. I hope that whatever the Mail witnessed is being checked out by the appropriate authorities.

Anyway, I don't blog much anymore, but this Mail story just seems strange to me. Could be nothing. Could be something. Thought I'd at least throw this story out there before it got lost in the rush of events, as it seems like something that ought not be overlooked as the investigation into the people associated with this horrible act of terror continues.

If you want to follow me on Twitter, I'm @jackmcoldcuts. Thanks for reading this far.

10 Jack, I thought the same thing. Sounds fishy to me.

The Globe is owned by the NY Slime, so being busy and losing money is something they are good at.

Why pray tell didn't the FBI have someone staking out the place in case some "friends" came by?

The reporters that axed the Globe "reporters" WTF they were doing were not suspicious? Why didn't they take pictures of them?

VERY strange.

22 My guess - two individuals working for the Russian government, which is very interested in Chechen terrorists.

They seem to have substantial resources in the Boston area, and it would make sense that they would also like to find anything of value that would point back to the network that trained the bombers.

Oh, and hundreds of police involved and no one stayed at the apartment?

Makes sense to libs! No one questions where the brothers got money for the explosives (did they work? Have not seen that mentioned).

Those two "reporters" were, no doubt, friends and booked out of there with something important that the police/FBI missed like a hidden thumb drive. We will never know.

Thank God for the British press, when every single newspaper there had the truth on Benghazi the next day (taking the US press three weeks to catch up).

54 From Obama's speech yesterday:

"Obviously, tonight there are still many unanswered questions. Among them, why did young men who grew up and studied here, as part of our communities and our country, resort to such violence?"

While this formulation misses the mark for the central issue by a wide margin, nevertheless, if conservatives had a lick of sense, they would acknowledge that Obama is absolutely correct in how he framed this critical question. And then conservatives should repeat Obama's formulation of the question tirelessly, spending the next 5 years, or however long it takes, educating Americans about the answer.

Is it any surprise that some young men actually believe what they are taught by the radicals that dominate so much of education today? Boudin may be one of the most extreme examples,, but she is also emblematic of the larger problem -- a truly radicalized education system. Just ask the President's friend, Bill Ayers.

Obama has handed conservatives a huge gift. Now what them squander it.

Two men with Russian accents walk into an apartment that was an active crime scene, while giving suspicious neighbors two conflicting reasons for their presence.

Later that same night Obama publicly thanks Putin for his help.

That is until you have some crazy SOB that is armed busting into your house that doesn’t really care about all the touchy feely crap you beleive in. Ask the guy who got carjacked by one of the bombers. He had a “coexist” sticker on his Honda. (Shocker I know) The bombers really didn’t believe in “coexisting” and niether do other criminals.

I had a post in draft about chemical weapons I never rolled with because the Boston thing blew up and swamped everything.

Between the Saudi student who was detained immediately after the marathon bombings and this story about the Russians, something is happening behind the scenes. To me, it looks like the Obama administration probably contacted the Russian and Saudi governments and said that they needed to take an active role in sweeping a few things under the rug if they wanted to avoid a huge backlash by Americans against their countries. The Saudi and Russians may not even be involved with the two brothers but may be independently involved with some other nefarious activity, whether terrorism or something else.

I am currently in the midst of two bathroom remodels and using faucet in kitchen and third br in another part of house. For all of the money he saves he ends up paying in wine to settle my nerves from the dust and cussing. It always looks great, however, after a long period of the crazy. And one trip to Lowes or Home Depot is never enough for one project. When he and one of the sons work together it is even worse. It keeps him off the streets.

Strange, why is a former lawyer working as a mechanic in Boston? You would think a Russian speaking lawyer could drum up some job at a fucking LAW firm. It's not like the law firms in Boston don't have any international business.

Also the travel of this family is very strange. Leaving one country, Russia, going to K stan, getting kicked out and coming to USA, then back to Russia?

"The video deals with a key part of jihadist mythology: That one of the most significant battles fought against the 'infidels' will take place in the Khorasan, a geographic area that includes parts of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

As my colleague Bill Roggio has explained, 'The Khorasan is considered by jihadis to be the place where they will inflict the first defeat against their enemies in the Muslim version of Armageddon. The final battle is to take place in the Levant - Israel, Syria, and Lebanon. Mentions of the Khorasan have begun to increase in al Qaeda's propaganda.'”

How could they be reporters? That doesn't make any sense.
They have to be either accomplices, or Russian agents. I don't think Russian agents would be in their twenties. I would bet good money they are accomplices.
Why was the apartment left unsecured? Shouldn't it be considered a crime scene of sorts? Hopefully they planted security cameras.
Obviously authorities have done some things really well, and some things...not so well. They really dropped the ball once they knew years ago the guy was a suspected terrorist. It seems they did so again when they left this apartment unsecured. Now two likely accomplices cannot be identified.

I think being the age they were made them think they were smarter than everyone, plus going to college where they did would only add to their feelings of superiority. You have to remember that people who blow kids up without giving it a second thought don't think like you or I do. They probably thought they were so awesome that they figured they could just go back to their everyday routine and that fleeing the country would make it more obvious.
Oh and as far as that apartment being unsecured goes. It was either negligent on whatever agency was responsible or a quid proquo to the Russians. Why did Obama specifically thank them. You would think if we had a press worth two shits that someone would be asking these questions. 240 Here are my two lists of questions gone unanswered:

1) What happened to the black BOLO guy from Monday night that Al Sharpton flipped his wig about?

2) What happened to the Chechynan boys who were stopped at the Canadian border with MA plates and backpacks (if memory serves: 4)?

Not sure what is up with the Saudi National...the Daily Mail covered that while the US press practiced their golf whisper. I don't think Americans tackle people in the middle of a bombing for the heck of it. "He was acting suspiciously and had, per initial reports, burns on hands." Then...poof...nothing burger until that Emerson guy mentions it on Hannity. Then a lot of denial from Sec. Skunk Hair and others. Now this Russian thing and O'Barfy thanking Putin last night. I guess we will find out Monday about the Saudi guy. I have to say his smiling face in his hospital gown irritates me as much as the wee jihadist's smirk on security cameras.

Correct me if I am wrong...but, since 9/11 the Homeland Security Dept was supposed to coordinate as well as receiving big bucks to add layers of security. Fancy radios and stuff, coordinating, instantly, all agencies. From wiki: "Within hours of the attacks, the FBI released the names and in many
cases the personal details of the suspected pilots and hijackers." Within HOURS. By mid-day, 9/11/01, the US had intercepted messages pointing to OBL. On Wednesday no one knew who they were looking for. FBI conferences were cancelled over and over again. Then the fuzzy photos on Thursday...still no official or clear photo of terrorists. It is either supremely incompetent or a fake incompetence to root them out and get them on the move. However, seeing as how the man on a ladder looking at his boat discovered the wee jihadist after an all day shelter in place was lifted and searches, it does leave you wondering.

Don't you think this (9/11), with four terrorist scenes, was a far more complicated investigation than the Boston Marathon with surveillance cameras? Where has our money gone? Why do I feel less safe than on 9/11/01?

It took until Thursday for the FBI to finally release the photos of who they were looking for: when tapes show the bombs planted. Fuzzy surveillance tapes by the store, not random cell phone videos---which they had instantly. It is also rumored that The Won delayed the investigation by swooping in for his "Hello BOSTON!" eulogy moment on Wednesday, delaying progress due to protecting his sorry prancing pony show.

All I can keep thinking is WTH is going on? We should be a decade further in intelligence gathering and faster response since 9/11, and how many billion dollars later. As someone said, what if this were going on in four major cities at the same time? We be in hot water.

Morons: make a bug out kit. Prepare to shelter in place or get the heck out of Dodge. You never know----I look at those poor people in West Texas and others who have to evacuate with no warning at all. Could you?

241 "Maybe there is an innocent explanation for all this. After all, the FBI had already swept the place"

The FBI had also already interviewed Tamerlane, the older brother scum-sucker year ago, and they completely missed his potential terrorist activity.

"Of course not, Allah Akbar!"

"Well ok then, that concludes our interview, enjoy your U.S. citizenship!"

They think it is "over" as one of the police people said at the presser last night. Sort of a "mission accomplished" moment, when I think many more are involved and helped and probably have fled but will be back. I went to bed hoping another bomber would not do something to those people gathered and celebrating. While I am very grateful to all who captured him, terrorism is far from "over."

American government to make America hate Muslims. “It’s real,” she said,

How are we going to react when they take out a grade school and all of it's students? You know it's going to happen. After it's "all over" we can go and drop off flowers and balloons at the massacre site and the islamists can study the attack and plan for the next one. This is NOT over by any stretch of the imagination and our sick culture only enables these animals to plan new and better attacks.

Where Christianity places it's focus on not folding in the face of adversity (see St. Steven) and even accepting death for your beliefs if necessary, Islam (or if I wanted to hedge this fundamentalist strain) seems to want people to go out and actively seek death for the religion.Which is a strange twisting of the notion of martyrdom that I don't really see anywhere else.

This was just prior to the "Boat Tarp Era of Investigation." At this point, and the Gov Patrick shelter/don't shelter/do shelter thing we were laughing and bewildered at the "news." I think, to add to the flavor, Sheppy Smith was in charge. It capped the end of the week for me.

It's perplexing though. It's arguably possible to look at the middle ages and not go "well Christianity certainly went thought a bit of an aggressive phase there didn't it." (Or for that matter you could look at the whole Constantine Conversion.)But by and large that's all been put away around...oh say the 1500s. (The conquistador stuff wasn't motived by religion.)Interestingly of the great religions (Islam, Hinduism, Judaism and Christianity by most accounts) Islam was the one that developed most under pluralism (the others having already been well established) and yet, it's seemingly the most hostile towards others.

Always thought the distinction was that Christian martyrs stand for their principles and are willing to die rather than recant their faith. Muslim martyrs are willing to have you die for their faith and willing to die themselves if necessary to kill infidels.

I am going to open bottle of white Bordeaux (Augy from fancy Publix) and have calories to further plump up wrinkles. After all! I look better than spa-terrorist-mother who did facials!

Any news on #2, the wee jihadist youth's health? Two pictures I examined with his oxygen on had me wondering if they were doing chest compressions with one hand (other tied behind back). He did look better than his brother, however. In my intelligence gathering I also noted he had not shaved his chest, as the 9/11 bastards* did.

* In addition to breaking rules of drinking during week/ calories I also cuss during terrorist week.

I enjoyed seeing the kids thank the cops, the same kids that use to spit on them.

Maybe they will learn that without cops it's a jungle.

The hypocrisy of the celebration is what upsets we fly over people. These people want to be patriotic when it suits them.

Check out how many of these same people ever volunteer for the armed forces, or every support the armed forces. They are happy because, THEIR asses were saved and they see that.

They never for a minute think of how our armed forces are protecting their liberal asses everyday 24/7.

We smile, while our sons/daughters protect them and get nothing but scorn.

COMPILED LIST OF QUESTIONS - SO FAR:

Why
didn't these 2 sub-humans leave the area immediately after the Monday bombings?

Where did they go between Monday and Thursday? (Yes, shithead #2 went back to
school, worked out, and went to a party Weds night - is that confirmed? And where was shithead #1
during this time?)

Who financed these two killers?

Where did the little shit go after running over his brother? He certainly was able to successfully elude scores of law enforcement for close to 24 hours

So the Jihad Brothers lived in the Cambridge
area, but they didn't go to school there. Brings up another question of ‘why?'

Do
we know what mosque the older jerk attended? And the younger jerk, for that
matter?

Why
did they go to MIT to try and "get into cars"?

Who
are these Russians who came to "interview" the roommates in New Bedford?

Why was the New Bedford
apartment left unsecured after FBI raided it? Shouldn't it be considered a
crime scene of sorts?

Who is this Saudi “person of interest?”

Why
is he being deported so quickly?

Why
did the Daily Mail cover this story and the US press ignore it? I don't think Americans tackle people in the
middle of a bombing for the heck of it. "He was acting suspiciously and
had, per initial reports, burns on hands." Then...poof...nothing burger
until that Emerson guy mentions it on Hannity. Then a lot of denial from Sec.
Skunk Hair and others.

Did
Michelle Obama indeed visit that Saudi at the hospital when she went there to
give comfort to victims (something she rarely does). If she did, why? To
apologize? To carry a message? Why?

Is
it possible the Saudi guy knows the Jihad Bros?

What
mosque did the Saudi guy attend? (Maybe
they all went to the same mosque.)

I guess we will find out Monday about the Saudi guy (will we)?

What
happened to the black BOLO guy from Monday night that Al Sharpton flipped his
wig about?

The older brother was arrested for domestic abuse, which should have had him
questioned by INS and deported. This did not happen. So, how many people of other religions,
arrested for domestic abuse, are deported? Are Muslims exempt?

What happened to the Chechnyan boys who were stopped at the Canadian border
with MA plates and backpacks (if memory serves: 4)?

Why
was O'Barfy thanking Putin last night?

Older
brother's best friend and 2 other guys were murdered in an apartment, found
with slit throats. Murder never solved. (Source Boston Globe.) Murder happened at the same
time older brother started making trips to Chechneyan area of Russia. Is the
murder somehow connected?

They keep reporting "serious condition."
I'd note though that the sort of industry standards here are "Good, fair, serious, critical."

Which (these are de facto standards, not actual) is important if they're following the usual classifications (these are de facto standards, not actual).

Why? Because people in my anecdotal experience people in "serious" condition stand a good (better than 50/50 at least) chance of coming out the other end with at least some of their faculties.
People in "Critical" condition not so much. (Not to say they won't make it, just their chances are a lot worse.
If I had to guess (why not the media can do it, I should be able to as well) I'd say "serious" condition points to injuries (possibly severe) on the extremities and significant blood loss, but no major organ damage. If that's right, this would be a set of surprisingly treatable ailments.

340 Lincolnf, I side with you. Boston, and Massachusetts in general, have many patriotic people. It is not their fault that the democrats have managed to create a one-party state (well, maybe a little).

My hope is that much like America's reaction in 1980 with the US Hockey Team's win over the Soviets at Lake Placid, this event will awaken the dormant patriotism in so many (which is not just in your state, but in many states). Sometimes it takes an event like this to get people out of their stupor, just like those hockey kids did in 1980.

And I don't blame people who are UNARMED for staying inside. Especially after that televised shoot-out.

I worked with a busy ED and county for emergency mgmt during 9/11. If you are told to "shelter in place" it is something to take seriously. While a wee terrorist coming here for a facial or bandaid would be met with gunfire and hot oil facials, I will shelter in place. A good example is if, God forbid, a nuke or chemical weapons ever happen. It is a good term to know, this "shelter in place." And I take it seriously. Those who ignore it are at their own possible peril. They mystery, to me, was Gov. Patrick lifting the shelter in place only to have all hell break loose moments later at dusk when an armed terrorist was on the loose.

"The police chief, Edward Deveau, describes how cops nearly
apprehended the older suspect, and were placing handcuffs on him in the
middle of the street Thursday night, when the younger suspect came at
officers in a carjacked SUV. The cops were able "to dive out of the
way," and the younger suspect then continued to drive directly over his
brother and dragging him through the street. That's how the older
suspect died, according to the police chief."

372 Interesting video comparison. Why would someone lean back against the wall away from the street if they were interested in the race?

BTW these students remind me of the ME princelings who attended our school in the US and threw their weight and their money around. Until 9/11, when they left en masse.

Amen. Please remember, posters that there are quite a number of people here who are "resident aliens" (and I don't mean illegal immigrants) in blue states. We didn't vote for Obama either time. We are here because of jobs or family concerns or we have homes, etc. This would include some of the cobloggers here, You can't pull us the tares without getting the wheat along with it. I don't like it when people make stereotypes about Southerners or Midwesterners any better than when people do it about people from Blue States.

374 Read, please. From 2004, warnings unheeded---remember the stories of Muslims, pretending to be Hispanic, crossing border? Arizona ranchers reporting prayer rugs in debris of illegals? Michelle Malkin reported it. She and Ace both had the FBI picture of Adnan G. El Shukrijumah pf Saidi in 2004. I remember :

Only around 200 Chechens obtain legal status in US, rarely men or families. Have read that most settle in either Boston or California.

375 Anyone find it odd that the Father said he never brought up the Boston bombing when he called a couple of days after. It was actually a good question by the reporter. Caught the Father off guard, he was stumbling trying to explain it, "why would I ask about that" etc.

If your son lives in Boston and a bombing takes place, international news, would you not ask are you ok, did you know anyone that got hurt. Something is off about this whole family, why did the mother leave a few months ago, were the parents paid off by a terrorist group?

Are they a part of some Chechen Mafia? BMW's, Mercedes, the Jokar terrorist is a part time lifeguard, where is the money coming from?

376 Regarding the FBI interviewing the older brother two years ago, some of the same critics I read here today, were outraged that the FBI was going to use a "public safety" exception to Miranda last night.

So, what was the FBI supposed to do with a vague warning from a foreign government? Should they have thrown him in a cell in Gitmo? Beat him? Followed him for a year? I am sure that you all know that the FBI did a piss poor job (and could do better without breaking a sweat), but maybe they didn't. Maybe there was nothing derogatory in the US that they could move on at that time.

Apparently, at the same time that we need to prevent the evil government drones from overstepping their bounds and becoming the Gestapo, we need to criticize them for not arresting the bomber two years before he committed a crime.

377 376:

Valid points but couldn't they have deported him after receiving the warning and then looking at his 2009 arrest, legally, don't they have enough grounds to kick him out because I believe the older brother never received full citizenship.

If this was J. Edgar Hoover's FBI, I believe Tamalan would have have been deported.

378 Also, if a foreign government warns the FBI about an American resident, I figured the FBI could get a court approved wiretap and be allowed to follow him for at least six months, what am I missing?

Posted by: War69DotCom at April 20, 2013 07:35 PM (ayPhb)

379 A wiretap requires probable cause. Specifically, probable cause that a crime is currently being committed using that phone. Unless the warning from Russia, included proof of specific criminal acts in the US, a judge wouldn't sign off on it (and even if it did, he still might not). There is usually at least six months of investigative work before a wiretap is considered.

As far as deportation, it still requires court proceedings if the person has a green card, either an admin hearing, or criminal court proceedings.

I have worked cases where State Dept. and INS have allowed serious bad guys (like, shooting at US troops) into the country on refugee or asylum visas, and when we have asked them to start the process to revoke their status (and stop letting them in), they told us "sorry, that is your problem now".

380 If you read the article by the woman who got facials from the mom, they described themselves as lawyers and "political activists" in Russia.

Uh-huh.

I think that's why Vlad called and asked for the kid to be investigated.

383 @382...I like the last part "If you don't come out we are going to let the dogs loose."That statement seems to work in a lot of situations.

Another "hoodie" strikes again! punks. Get 'em.

384 President Barack Obama spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin Friday evening and thanked the Russian leader for unspecified cooperation in the investigation into the Boston Marathon bombings.

As law enforcement officials surrounded the Watertown location where 19 year old suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was suspected to be hiding, the White House released a read out of the Obama-Putin phone call, which referenced the United States and Russia working together on the Boston bombing issue.

"President Putin expressed his condolences on behalf of the Russian people for the tragic loss of life in Boston. President Obama thanked President Putin for those sentiments, and praised the close cooperation that the United States has received from Russia on counter-terrorism, including in the wake of the Boston attack," the statement said. "The two leaders agreed to continue our cooperation on counter-terrorism and security issues going forward."

385 I'm waiting for more about this, too. The Globe may consider themselves "informed."

How about the rest of us?
