Thursday Morning News Dump

Thanks to CDR-M for the retirement accounts link.

You can find pictures of Kate Upton motor boating Christina Hendricks here.

Update: I removed the Blaze article linking to the NYPost article. It looks like the NYPost identified the wrong people.

What a silly, small, and pathetic performance by Obama yesterday.
I'm getting tired of basically being accused of being a murderer for my policy position on guns by a man who can't condemn a doctor who snipped the spinal cords of babies.
The moral hectoring by the partial birth abortion crowd is absurd.

9 What a silly, small, and pathetic performance by Obama yesterday.

--

Maybe, just maybe, his petulant, pissy and immature snit will wake up one or two people. But when 99.9% of his brain dead flock are equally silly, small and pathetic, they probably thought he was pitch perfect. He is a hugely and wholly un-presidential man. A true embarrassment.

23 Reposted the following from end of previous thread (my timing sucks). Hope this doesn't put me in the barrel for formatting:

Haven't read any of the comments thus far this morning, but wanted to thank you morons again for your prayers and good thoughts for those of us on the ground here in central Texas near the explosion. Much of the immediate chaos has organized, but it still looks like a war zone out here. Rain has diminished the fires, which are still smoldering. The injury reports must mainly be compiled by the hospitals, because they are vastly under-reporting injuries. I saw people last night who should have been under care who were pushing wheelchairs down the road to help others, and people in homes we were checking that didn't want to seek a doctor because "other people are worse off." Door-to-door efforts are still going on, and probably will for days. This is a farming area, with people near the explosion that live a mile from anyone else on the back dirt or caleche rock roads. People from out of town are showing up to loot, damn them to hell. I warn them that I came across many old ladies with guns in their hands last night who might have opened up on us during the rural checks if we hadn't been able to yell out some familiar names. No good estimate of death toll yet, so not speculating. I ran into an EMT last nightwho everyone thought was dead. He said he was beginning to feel like he was Snake Plisskin ("I thought you were dead!"). The feds are coming in already, including the ATF. Will be working the shelters today. Thank you one and all again for your prayers. We need more. There are some damn fine people out here.

25 - "Hispanics Beat Up Arab Looking Man In The Bronx After Boston Bombing"

Shh, that doesn't fit the narrative.

- "Feminist's Son Suffers From Society Modern Feminism Helped Create"

The irony would be lost on that deranged demographic. Speaking of which:

- "MSNBC Claims The NRA Is Hindering..The Boston Bombing Investigation?"

Leftism is a mental disorder, not a legitimate political ideology.

- "After Gun Defeat, Where Does Obama Go From Here?"

Unfortunately he goes nowhere. Which is the whole point. Jan. 2017 won't arrive any sooner. And the federal courts in the interim will have plenty of vacancies. The non-voting right would not be able even to connect the dots, much less to grasp the irony.

- "College Fired Professor Who Forced Students To Sign Pledge To Vote For Obama"

Is it parental malpractice in this day and age even to send your kids off to college much less to saddle them with student loan debts? That we've devolved to a level at which that question is ripe speaks volumes about where we are as a nation and ultimately where we're headed. The prospects truly are bleak.

27 I have no doubt the little performance the President gave yesterday was to have soundbites for the mid-term elections. 39 I'm glad decisive action was taken in the Brevard case, though I believe it is a drop in the bucket. As I have satisfied myself at the old alma mater, you can throw idea after idea at them, but if the pedigree is not right--your age, your background, your politics, etc.--they will find an excuse to be inactive. Academia simply wishes to rule the world.

I understand American differ on what the culture should be. In my opinion, what universities should strive for is the "Prime Directive"--"non-intereference" with the culture. On issues where society has not yet decided conclusively what "proper" is, universities should neither promote nor exclude. The LGBT student group gets chartered, but the religious ones do not have to worship at the LGBT shrine. Because both views carry strength in society--thus the university must simply be neutral ground for both.

Whereas it can tell the students wishing to found the "Satan worship" club to pound sand.

What universities should do is stop the indoctrinating, let their grounds be a true debating society, in the spirit of the quest dor knowledge, and let society work these things out. Colleges must simply, when it comes to culture, stop trying to influence the culture in the sense of steering students towards wished viewpoints, which is what is happening today.

As far as me and the old alma mater, well, when I leave, I will have left. A man has got to eat (though perhaps after losing some weight first), and if they don't want the ideas, well, I tried. I didn't have to.

41 My father died in the line of duty about twenty years ago and the local politicians paraded my mother around for a couple of years for whatever cause came to mind. She was in the papers weekly for about six months to a year and was on national TV once or twice.

It's a pathetic thing. It feed her ego and kept her mind off of grieving and getting on with life. In the end, she said some politically stupid things and they dropped her like the hot potato she always was and she found herself grieving all over again. My mother is a more normal version of Cindy Sheehan. Twenty years and I'm still pissed about it.

National security reasons. It's not in our national security interests to keep wanna-be jihadists in the country. Especially ones whose family contains members of Al Q and with a bunch more in Gitmo.

My personal grassy knoll theory of the moment is that saudi student money bankrolled a couple of stooges to drop the backpacks. Three saudi nationals standing 10 feet from the guy 4Chan has pretty much nailed. Helluva coincidence.

Yeah. I went there, too. Orhe said "I want to go home," and Saudi Arabia (who we'll usually cater to, as long as it isn't too over the top) said, "If you don't suspect him, send him home, please."

But, see, neither of those are fun. So I'm going to wildly speculate that he's a Saudi Intelligence agent, and the Saudi's caught wind of Monday's bomb some time ago. So they sent their equivalent of Agent 007 to stop it. When he couldn't stop it, they needed to get him back without revealing that he's a super-spy, and so concocted this whole "national security grounds" stuff.

Isn't that much more fun?

"Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker;
For He is our God,

And the sheep of his hand." Ps 95

"Seek ye the Lord while He may be found; call ye upon Him while He is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return unto the Lord, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon." Isa 55

105 I wouldn't dismiss the forced savings accounts out of hand. It is very clear that the majority of people are not responsible enough to set aside adequate money for retirement. I have absolutely no doubt that these people will be looking to the taxpayer to bail them out when they can't afford to retire, but are to old to work. That means that folks like me who saved and deferred gratification will be punished to reward the grasshoppers.

Giving the government access to the money is a different thing entirely, and should absolutely be forbidden.

That's exactly what would happen. How could the government force people to have retirement accounts and not have some control over them or the withholding for them.

With the exception of Timothy McVeigh, every act of political violence that I can think of has come from the left.

And Timothy McVeigh's heinous crime is antithetical to the belief of reasoned political discourse. He truly was a lone wolf nut. That's why I reject the paradigm of left-right-center. We on the so-called "right" want freedom, liberty, the rule of law and a limited government that serves the interest of the civil society.

The so-called "left" rejects this. They want a totalitarian state that controls every aspect of every person. And since no reasonably informed person would ever want this, the only ways they can attain their goals is either by stealth or by violence.

Islam seeks the same goals as the left; total subjugation under a brutal, soul-crushing theocratic state. Not coincidentally, the left and Islam are united as allies of convenience against Western civilization.

That's how I see it.

Here's some more Halsey-Doolittle Raid info.

The raid did not cause a lot of damage, but it did freak out the Japanese high command. They would keep several fighter groups near Tokyo which could have been better used in upcoming battles. It also caused Yamamoto to revise his strategy and attack Midway Island earlier than planned.

Some raid trivia:
1. Doolittle initially considered the raid a failure because all 16 planes were lost for the war effort.
2. The idea for using medium bombers launched from a carrier came from Capt. Francis Low, a Submarine officer assigned to CNO Adm. King.
3. Two B-25s were test flown off the Hornet by navy pilots in Feb 1942.
4. One Hornet sailor lost an arm from the last plane's propeller when it shifted in the high seas.
5. Approx 250,000 Chinese were killed by the Japanese in retaliation for helping the raiders.
6. A lookout on one of the Japanese picket boats spotted the two U.S. Carriers but thought they were Japanese. He told his skipper to look at "two of our beautiful carriers." The skipper did and said, "They're beautiful all right, but they're not ours." He went below and killed himself.
7. After several days of walking in China, Doolittle was exhausted and asked his Chinese guide to get him something to ride. The guide provided a donkey that kicked Doolittle in the chest and knocked him to the ground. The guide then said to Doolittle, "He bites too."

Ouch. So painfully on the mark with regard to what is taught as "history" nowadays.

I have huge respect for the Doolittle raiders, but I've come over the years to view it as an insanely valorous stunt, and not much more. A stunt which was meant to cover up the terrifying unpreparedness of the U.S. Navy to fight the IJN in the Pacific during the early stages of the war.

Blame for said unpreparedness belonging largely to one Franklin Roosevelt.

And, the cult of FDR must be maintained and defended at all costs. That was the rule during his life, during his Presidency, and it's been the rule since his death.

"Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker;
For He is our God,
And we are the people of his pasture,
And the sheep of his hand." Ps 95

"Seek
ye the Lord while He may be found; call ye upon Him while He is near;
let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts;
and let him return unto the Lord, and He will have mercy upon him; and
to our God, for He will abundantly pardon." Isa 55

232 There is apparently a "Gang of Eight" in the House now for immigration.

My basic view is that on this issue there is no reason to actually trust the government, the Republicans, or the Democrats; and many substantial reasons to *distrust* them.

There is nothing they can say or do that will make me believe in them on this issue. They, as corporate entities, have earned no right to make such requests for trust, and have in fact earned---earned I say--scorn. But that does not stop them from continuing to try to get what they want, which is Hispanic votes.

After 30 years of basic bad faith, and after fifty tears of calculated attempts by one element to change the demographics of the United States, the only actions that are in my view acceptable by the Federal government to do are an air-tight border and an enforcement of the laws (in a humane fashion). This two things will not happen, of course, because we are not a nation of laws, but it is what should happen.

I do not thnk I am alone when I say the political class has overdrawn its good-will account one too many times, and the account needs to be closed down due to lack of funds. I simply do not and will not trust this system unless it does what I say above, for I only will trust it when it starts doing--for three decades, the same amount of time as was used to create this crisis--what it by law should have always be doing but by inclination puposely desired not to, for varying reasons right and left.

233 WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama and his gun control allies say Senate rejection of expanded background checks
and other restrictions won't stop their drive to reduce firearms
violence. But their path to enacting gun curbs this year seems blocked
by the National Rifle Association, and supporters of restrictions appear
befuddled about what it will take to push legislation through this Congress.

But just four months after a gunman killed 20 children and six adults at
an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., the Senate proved unwilling
Wednesday to approve the key elements of President Barack Obama's
response to the massacre.

257 I'm listening to an investigative reporter on Beck now re the Saudi national.

Is he listing the Clinton's connections? Hillary will benefit from Saudi money, as Slick Willy did.

Former President Clinton has finally released the list of donors to his presidential library: 2,922 pages and 208,000 donors for Clinton's $165 million library in Little Rock, Ark (which these days, to the likely delight of motorcycle fans, is exhibiting the "Art of the Chopper").

Clinton resisted releasing the list until Hillary Clinton negotiated her way into the Obama administration as its likely secretary of state. The administration's deal with Bill was: show all. So he did. Why the resistance, anyway, is beyond me. Then again it isn't: Clinton wanted to hide the fact that up to $41 million of his donations come from Arab governments and individuals.
...

Kuwait, Qatar and Oman are all in the $1 million to $5 million donors' club, and the government of Saudi Arabia is up there with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Fred Eychaner (the Chicago arts patron and mega--fundraiser for Democrats) in the $25 million club.

...

WASHINGTON — Former President Bill Clinton has raised more than $500 million for his charitable foundation from foreign governments, including Saudi Arabia, and an international who's who of royal families, corporate barons, philanthropic foundations, entertainment personalities, Democratic donors and longtime friends of the Clinton family, according to a list of donors made public for the first time Thursday.

281 I dislike pointing this out, but I also want to draw attention to the difference in effectiveness between most left wing terrorists (Bill Ayers, Uni-bomber, etc.) and one right-winged terrorist.

"We," modern non-leftists, basically only have McVeigh and Breivik. Neither is a conservative in the American sense, and their "ideologies" (for lack of a better term) are idiosyncratic--but they're working from outside the consensus in a way that Ayers/Ted K./etc. aren't. That's what "right-wing" fundamentally means, now. "Unacceptable."

Target-wise, those two were highly effective. They planned to kill a bunch of their enemies, and they did it. They're great mass murderers. But terrorism-wise, they didn't accomplish anything.

Unlilke Ayers, the Unabomber, and (yes) Al Qaeda, they're unrepresented. There's no one up there to say "Of course I condemn this blah blah blah, but he's got a point."

Hence the paucity of real, on-the-ground right-wing terrorists. It doesn't work, and dedication to doing horrible shit futilely is rare. And crazy.

The world gets the terrorists it desires, not the ones it (one could argue) deserves.

304 Note to the world at large: imposing kneejerk legislation in response to emotionally charged situations IS ALWAYS A BAD IDEA. THIS IS FACT.

Yup. And it happens all the time. Right now, in several states if not all, there are pending "Jesse's Law" or "Allen's Law" etc. featuring well-attended news conferences and blown-up photos of little children and well-dressed politicians combing their hair before the camera lights go on.With everyone pretending they are committed to Making the Bad Things Go Away. I am VERY angry with the Newtown parents for allowing themselves and, worse yet, their CHILDREN to be used as ghoulish marionettes in this charade. It's disgusting. I don't care if you're 100% behind abolishing the 2nd amendment -- there's no reason to allow yourself to be trotted out like a Pavlovian dog every single time Obama or one of his ilk wants to use you as a prop.

Yeah. I wouldn't expect to be rational if I lost one of my children for any reason, let alone mass murder. But I would NOT accept comfort from someone I detested, like Obama. The one reaction I could guarantee is telling him to fuck right off unless he wanted to taste some real pain.

It's Connecticut. Probably they don't have a negative view of Obama, if they think about him at all. Hard to fault them for wanting to be a part of something, anything that keeps their child alive in their minds and in everyone else's - to affirm that their baby did exist, and that somehow there is some purpose to all of this.

I just can't bring myself to criticize these people. None of them are going Mother Sheehan on us, so I say let them grieve however they need to.

In the case of the last election, it's not *just* that Mourdock and Akin said something stupid, it's that the media blew it up and repeated it endlessly.

Also with Obama, no Benghazi coverage, no Fast and Furious Coverage, no 1.5 Billion dollars in vacation expenditures coverage, no Bowing to the Saudi's coverage, no Inspector General scandal coverage, no Dealergate coverage, no "Green Energy" Boondoggle coverage, and so on.

361 Unlilke Ayers, the Unabomber, and (yes) Al Qaeda, [non-leftist exremists are] unrepresented. There's no one up there to say "Of course I condemn this blah blah blah, but he's got a point."

Bingo.

Also, society is forbidden from identifying left-wing extremists as "extremists." Ayers was a "60s radical" even though he was a terrorists who set off his bombs in the '70s and his wife went to jail rather than testify against friends who killed law enforcement officers in the '80s. Heck, you can’t even identify the political leanings. It’s just not done in polite company.

If it were allowed, the phrase “President Kennedy was assassinated by a left-wing extremist” would be common knowledge to every school child. The result of all the whitewashing is that people on the left never have to acknowledge that their ideology can be taken to an extreme. Which is not a good thing.

426 Newlyweds Patrick Downes and Jessica Kensky, who live in Cambridge, each lost their left leg below the knee, said Tom Treacy, a close friend. Though they are runners themselves, they were watching the race when the bombs detonated.

They were taken to different hospitals. The couple, who married in August, received a bit of good news on Wednesday: Doctors were hopeful Ms. Kensky would be able to keep her right leg, Mr. Treacy said.

“What gives me comfort in this whole thing is the fact that they’ll be going through what sounds like a pretty similar rehabilitation process,” he said. “The fact that they’ll be there for each other is what will allow me to get some sleep tonight.”

A person who answered the phone at a Cambridge number listed to the Downes family declined to comment.

Mr. Downes, 29 years old, a psychology doctorate student, and Ms. Kensky, 32 years old, a nurse, had each taken care of each other during previous medical difficulties, Mr. Treacy said.

I agree, but the one picture of the guy's backpack with the white hat really looked like there could be a pressure cooker in it. Plus, a couple of pictures taken later shows him without the backpack as him and his partner walk through the crowd. Now that they are cleared, he must have been holding the backpack at his feet, but I don't blame people for at least highlighting those pics.

Two part plan.
Part One
The bad guys blow up some runners.
Create a big media event.
Maim people, kill people, and frighten people.

Part Two
Bet the President will show up to get face before camera
Plan accordingly to pop such a hard target with on the fly security.

Even if Part Two does not happen or fizzles, Part One is still a win.

I wouldn't call it a scew up. It depends -- if the LE and FBI did release those photos, then it was because they legitimately wanted to identify and question the young men. You can be a suspect and still be innocent -- hence the whole "innocent until proven guilty" thing, and the reason why investigations can take a long time as evidence is gathered.

If these individuals have now been cleared then the FBI and local PD need to make sure to publicize that fact VERY clearly.

Hell, in half those pictures we see of him he's probably got a Marlboro clutched in one hand, out of sight of the lens, so that he can take long, satisfying drags between snaps.

Authorities suspect the blast was

But I don't see liberals lining up for that kind of law. This is my new go-to line of attack on FB. Upset about no new gun control? Play along and say "I'm even more upset that NO BILL at all was made for some common-sense limits on press freedom to deny these killers the media oxygen they crave. Ban reporting on mass killing or at least ban the publishing the killer's name and photo. I'm sure all agree with me, that if it saved just one child, it would be worth it to limit the 1st Amendment."

Several of us have offered prayers. I can't imagine the hell West, TX is going through. Something similar (but not as large) happened here in Feb. 2008, when a Texas based company, Imperial Sugar, exploded killing 14 and badly injuring 42 (mainly severe burns). It was horrible.

748 Regarding Reid talking about, vis a vis gun control, what supposedly "everybody in every state" wanted, meaning what Obama talked about--that a majority wanted something :

Well, ignoring for a second whether or not those are valid beliefs or not--they are nevertheless somewhat rich coming from a Democrat, because I seem to recall that a majority did not want Obamacare passed (and still do not wish it) but somehow it was passed (and somehow we still have it). And of course, the Dems took a "shellacking" in the next election. But it is clear the President would still veto any and every repeal of Obamacare while he is still in office. Strange all that. Majority will would thus appear to not be absolute in Democrat eyes.

But I guess in the modern America, what a "majority of the peope want" really means is what "a majority of Democratic Party thought-leaders want".

At any rate, if this "majority desire" Reid and Obama speak of actually exists on this issue, then we should expect to see it play out next election, just as Obama was shellacked by going against majority will in 2010. My guess is nothing will result, and that the President is, like Harry Reid, basically just a dishonest man desiring arbitrary rule, and is upset because he cannot get it.

756

The point being that there are many fewer pressure cookers than guns
in this country. As we learned in Boston, these pressure cookers can be
the basis for a devastating bomb.

So, does Obama's common sense tell him we need a national pressure
cooker registry with background checks required prior to purchase? I
doubt there are Constitutional impediments. Engraving serial numbers on
newly produced pressure cookers shouldn't be beyond the scope of our
manufacturers. The cost to consumers will rise, but think of the
children!

762 The movie: 1994’s "Blown Away".

The plot.

An Irish terrorist — played by A-List Oscar nominee and Al Gore’s Harvard roommate (and frequent contributor to Democrats) Tommy Lee Jones — is intent on a revenge-driven bombing attack on a member of the Boston Pops Orchestra.

The movie hero — played by Jeff Bridges — seeks to stop Jones.

In the lead up, Jones’s character sets off bombs in various parts of Boston — bombs that contain ball bearings designed to explode as shrapnel — just as the real bombs in Boston did this past Monday. The film contains this very graphic attack (as seen here), which the film’s hero — actor Bridges — frantically and unsuccessfully seeks to prevent. Here is the scene with the Boston Pops, the climax of the film. (Spoiler alert, Jeff Bridges saves the day.)

During any other administration, the answer would be that people are too overwhelmed by the Boston bombings to process Texas. For this administration, the answer is simple: fuck you, you Dubya-voting Texas gun nuts. Your ruling class is grieving - you shut up!

In other words, despite all the "we all pray for Boston" sentiment of the other day, we're only one nation when our betters wish it so. Fuck you flyovers.

765 I seriously, honestly want to know what it is that reasonable people objected to about increased background checks. I say this as someone who is entirely fine with law-abiding citizens owning Evil Black Rifles in any number, whatever the magazine capacity (though I sort of draw a line at full-auto, I must admit).

In the end, I admit you can pass all the background checks in the world and it won't stop you from going insane (literally) with newly-diagnosed schizophrenia the next day and murdering hundreds, BUT I have problems with allowing sale of firearms to people with histories of violent crime esp. rape, murder, spouse abuse and the cops being called to the house again and again because people heard screams followed by women and children crying and the kids showing up at school with black eyes from "doorknobs".

btw... WE ALREADY HAVE BACKGROUND CHECKS!! They don't prosecute anyone who lies on the form already.. passing another shit law will do what exactly? Oh yeah, harm people who play by the rules.. yep. So tired of this shit

Posted by: shut off the TV at April 18, 2013 01:39 PM (B4kSp)

769 767 Why? Because scumbags who beat their wives and kids up and have prior convictions for violent crimes are IMO not fit and proper persons to own firearms and are highly likely to lie about it on whatever form they fill out. Mind you, where I am now, once you pass those background checks you get a licence in hand (restricted or unrestricted dep. on what you sat the test for) and can buy whatever you want that's legal for you without further paperwork or waiting (where I was before that, you have to apply for permission to purchase each firearm, but the justifications are so easy to give it's not funny even if the wait is annoying). So there's an upside - you only have to do it once.

Posted by: perturbed at April 18, 2013 01:43 PM (u6Ueb)

770 What you want is legislative xanax to make you feel better. Laws for all kinds of background checks already exist. Where I am, you've got to pass a background check AND wait a week to get your purchase at both gun shops and shows. Every thug in the city has no problem getting guns and terrorizing the inner city.

If we're talking mental problems, well do you want a $10/hr clerk to have access to all your medical records? If you were given samples of prozac one day by DR, are you now mentally ill? Thats what we're dealing with here. You're creating a worse problem with people afraid to seek any kind of help because they assume the kid down the street who works at the gov't building can see all their records. This shit would happen and you know it. Hell it already has

Posted by: shut off the TV at April 18, 2013 01:56 PM (B4kSp)

771 @765, in addition to 768's point about there already are background checks, the only way to be sure that background checks are being done is to register all guns with the govt. If they don't know what guns are where, how can they be sure bg checks are being completed? And as always, they already don't enforce the laws on the books--look toChicago as evidence there. And of course, criminals don't abide by any of it anyway. So you're only keeping honest people honest.

773 #111 Yesterday I read that all 5 living presidents are going to the
dedication of the Bush library. Is that library anywhere near the
explosion?
--

Yes, next week is the GWB library dedication at SMU in Dallas and all 5 living presidents (as well as Mooch) are planning to attend. SMU is about 75 miles north of West, TX. The Dallas Morning News had a link last night to an article about the Dallas PD urging everyone to be alert between now and the dedication, and "if you see something, say something." This was after Boston but before the fertilizer plant explosion. I am sure security will be very tight.

Sometime after the dedication, I'm looking forward to going to see GWB's library. Will be happy with the Oblathers leave the state. No doubt Barky will try to fake some empathy and use the West tragedy to his political benefit.
