Terrorist Infrastructure Trial Run in San Jose, CA?

Somebody shot up a PG&E sub-station and then moved on to a separate ATT fiber hub and cut the fibers which included 911 lines for the area. I know this area and this was no accidental/drunken attack since they had to open specific manholes to get access to the fibers and also targeted each of the transformers.

The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department said there was a breach of the security fence at approximately 3:25 a.m., and five transformers at the substation were vandalized by the gunfire.

Meanwhile, AT&T has now also blamed a large telephone outage in southern Santa Clara County Tuesday morning on vandalism.

Cell phones and landlines were said to be impacted by apparent damage to a fiber optic line. That line, which runs relatively close to PG&E's substation, was believed to have been cut.

A List of Absolutely Horrible Business Ideas

That were wildly successful.

Airlines are cool. Let's start one. How hard could it be? We'll differentiate with a funny safety video and by not being a**holes.

It will be ugly. It will be free. Except for the hookers.

We are building the world's 20th search engine at a time when most of the others have been abandoned as being commoditized money losers.

Give us all of your bank, brokerage, and credit card information. We'll give it back to you with nice fonts. To make you feel richer, we'll make them green.

It is like email, SMS, or RSS. Except it does a lot less.

The world needs yet another Myspace or Friendster except several years late. We'll only open it up to a few thousand overworked, anti-social, Ivy Leaguers. Everyone else will then join since Harvard students are so cool.

Bottom line is that no one knows nothing about what will succeed and execution matters.

Brownells Explains Why Ammo and Gun Accessories Are So Scarce

We don't realize how intertwined the varied shooting disciplines really are. You may have a hard time figuring out why you can't find reloading components for shot shells. But consider this: all ammunition shares some base-level components - powder, primers and projectiles.

The ammunition to fuel your gun of choice, be it a rifle, pistol or shotgun, is in competition with every other gun and ammo for the basic components and the manufacturer's machine time to assemble them.

Companies don't have independent production lines for every gun they make or every caliber of ammunition they load.

That time is shared across all their lines, and it's tough to pull the tools and computer controlled programming for AR-style rifles to fill other orders. Simple business sense says you have to keep working to meet the highest-demand orders. If buyers give up on buying your gun, they're going to go looking elsewhere.

So your favorite round or gun may be finding itself pushed further down the production schedule. As that happens, existing inventory shrinks - even if the demand isn't anything approaching those uber-hot black rifles.
You might be feeling the pinch, but it's not really some secret conspiracy to keep you from having guns or ammunition. It's the market reacting to unprecedented demand for products.

Gun and Ammo Boom Means Jobs

And manufacturers are hiring.

Mike Weddle, head of maintenance at Dynamic Research Technologies, an ammunition manufacturer in Albany, Mo., says he is adding 10 new hires to his staff of 35. DRT's machine operators make between $10 and $17 an hour -- a healthy paycheck in a region where it's tough to find a job and the cost of living is relatively low.

DRT currently cranks out 80,000 bullets per shift and operates two shifts per day. But that's not enough to meet demand. So Weddle is adding a third manufacturing shift and building an additional facility.
"Demand picked up a year ago -- it quadrupled," he said. "It just went crazy." He says .223 caliber ammo, which is for semiautomatic rifles, is particularly difficult to keep in stock.

But they're limited by the competition for qualified employees:

Jacob Herman, chief operating officer for Red Jacket Firearms in Baton Rouge, La., agrees that finding qualified workers is the biggest hurdle for his business, which has an 18-month long blacklog of orders. Red Jacket, a family-owned company with 30 employees, makes AR15 semiautomatic rifles but has had to stop taking new orders for the time being.

"Finding skilled machinists and advanced skilled labor is one of the biggest problems that we face in getting products out the door," said Herman.
"The firearms industry is fighting for the same employees as the exploding oil business, both here in the Gulf [of Mexico] and in the Dakotas," said Herman, referring to the oil boom in North Dakota, where workers are flocking for jobs with Halliburton (HAL, Fortune 500), Continental Resources (CLR), Hess (HES, Fortune 500) and Whiting Petroleum (WLL).

6 Mind-Blowing Things Recently Discovered From WWII

Including the secret Nazi surveillance base in North America that wasn't discovered until the 80's.

While German U boats would occasionally shoot holes in ships off the coast of North Carolina during WWII, we generally think of fighting Nazis as an away game for Canada and the United States. So you can imagine how surprising it was when Canada found out in the early 80s that Germans once mounted a fully armed expedition into their country without anyone even noticing.

I thought the first movie was a bit meh, but appreciated my son's view that this was looking "at" the protagonist, while the book was written in the protagonist's viewpoint-her impressions and thoughts, rather than what was really happening around her. Made the movie more enjoyable when it came out on DVD. So yeah, I am looking forward to this.

25 Moving this from last thread, where I was late to the party, because, its important, serious you guys!388 I got out of medical insurance/billing two years ago-electronic medical records are QUITE often incomplete or mixed up, and it is much more time consuming for staff to mix than paper records were....many layers of IT to go through, in some cases. It is best to assume your record is problematic when you go in, and confirm your medical issues with the doctor. Obamacare is, in addition to all its other fuck-ups, going to increase medical malpractice insurance rates, because doctors WILL have incorrect info. THIS IS CRUCIAL INFO IF YOU HAVE DRUG ALLERGIES! Sorry for the all caps, but I personally know my former employer had an issue with penicillin allergy not in record, with BAD results for patient!

40 I have an idea. The next time some gun control freak blathers on about private sale background checks, ask why all car sales, public and private, shouldn't require a background check to assure that the buyer has a driver's license and is an American citizen.

I mean, why not? Illegal
s kill people with their cars all the time. They're more likely to drive drunk and almost never have insurance. And anyone who's driving without a license is also more likely to do harm.

So why shouldn't a private car sale require this? Tough shit if it's a hassle for the seller. IT'S FOR THE CHILDREN.

Watch them squirm.

You are correct. One of the biggest problems as you point out is perpetuation of inaccurate information. This is relevant in terms of drug allergies but also in terms of actual current active medications. You also see a lot of inaccurate info perpetuated because docs or other providers "cut and paste" from previous notes by different docs, frequently without even reading what they are pasting into their own note.

He is not only responsible for killing one of the women who came in for an abortion, but also for delivering babies alive and then killing the children by severing their spinal cord, even to the point where the babies could scream aloud or where Gosnell would joke that they were big enough to walk home. He even performed an abortion on a young, underage girl who did not want an abortion and tried to leave. The Grand Jury indictment has been released. It is beyond disturbing. In it the Grand Jury, consisting of both Pro-Life and Pro-Choice supporters, condemned the sheer and utter evil of Gosnell.

104 Ricin Guy identified apparently. Someone dug up this post at an online consumer advocacy site where he goes into a missing body part conspiracy he found working in a morgue, was fired and apparently was not listened to by those in power...

This is one of the saner parts:

On May 23, 2003, an intoxicated assistant district attorney pushed me backwards during a debate about corruption in northeast, MS. and then put a loaded 9 mm bereta to my head in front of my (then) wife and 2 sons, ages 7 and 9.

I didn't know at the time he was an assistant DA in Tupelo. All I knew was that the city hired him to play rythem guitar in a special new production that I developed including my older brother Jack. The show was gaining attention as we are the only brother duo Elvis Presley Tribute act in the world.

Pat Rasberry, executive director of the Tupelo Convention Visitor's Bureau drove up right at the moment he put the gun to my head and cocked it. I had my hands up in the air. She jumped out of her car and he threw the gun into his truck like nothing ever happened.

I filed charges against him for assault but instead of HIM going to jail for almost killing me in front of my family, the police showed up at my door and arrested ME.

The problem is that they can't really send him anywhere else. They can't send him to a line unit since he hasn't completed his training, and the only other option would be to keep him at basic training working for one of the companies.

When I was a new lieutenant some of my peers from OCS ran into the same problem. They had class dates that were three or four months away, so they were made to wait around at the appropriate post until their date hit.

When I was an LT getting ready to pin Captain, I requested to be sent to the Career Course before my next assignment. My branch manager sent me with a report date in February, but didn't tell me that my class didn't start until June. I took advantage of the time to take other courses, but it still sucked.

In what could only be describe as govt planning, he said his MOS school isn't due to start until July. He is thinking of heading home to help with recruiting (spending time with gf) for a month and then going back. What a monumental waste of time and money for the USMC to send him there now.

My son just finished up a month as a recruiter's assistant...we had to drive him to Scranton each day, but it was worth it. His gf is now is fiance, and my future daughter in law. But we had him for a whole month...it was worth it!

He's back in Chesapeake now, and once he's done with that...about six more weeks, I'm hoping they send him to DC next, which was the original plan....but things change when you're in the military.

This particular flight will orbit a dummy payload, and if all goes well they will launch their Cygnus cargo ship to the ISS later this year. If you're talking about the Manchin/Toomey amendment, he originally voted aye and then changed his vote to no at the end. It was a procedural move, because only someone on the winning side can enter a motion to reconsider. That's basically, "Hey, let's take this vote again sometime!" 99% of the time the motion to reconsider is tabled (killed) but in this case it was made and not tabled. This way if they can figure out a way to twist some arms in the next little while they could bring it up again for a vote with very little effort.

He did vote for Feinstein's assault weapons ban and Lautenberg's ban on anything that can hold more than 10 rounds. Thanks, NRA.

300 At the High Water Mark of the Civil War:The Death of Lt. CushingPositioned just north of the copse of trees, Battery A, 4th US
Artillery was commanded by 22 year-old Lt. Alonzo Cushing. Born in Wisconsin in
1841, his family had moved to New York where the young Cushing grew up and
attended West Point, graduating in the class of 1861. He had served in staff
positions and in command of Battery A in battles prior to Gettysburg, but it is
doubtful he had ever been involved in such intense fighting as he experienced
here. Cushing's battery appeared to be the focus of the Confederate artillery
during the cannonade and was nearly destroyed in the furious bombardment. When
the Confederate cannon fire died away, Cushing found himself with only a handful
of gunners and two working cannon. Though painfully wounded by shell fragments,
the young lieutenant was unwilling to personally leave the field or retire his
shattered battery. He gained permission from General Webb to move his two guns
down to the wall in the Angle where he ordered that extra canister rounds be
piled by each gun. Cushing and his few artillerymen served these guns until the
last, the lieutenant himself aiming and firing one of the double-shotted pieces
into the mass of Pickett's Virginians as they closed in on the stone wall. "I
will give them one more shot!", Cushing cried above the din. Seconds later a
bullet struck him through the mouth, killing him instantly, his lifeless body
tumbling over the gun trail. The young lieutenant died a hero's death and was
later buried with full honors at his old alma mater, West Point. And . . . right across from the Brave Lieutenant, and probably captured by his men after Cushing died:Confederate General ArmisteadOn the other side of Cushing's marker is a scroll-top granite
monument to General Lewis Armistead, which marks the general location where he
was mortally wounded among Cushing's guns on July 3. Erected and dedicated by
friends of the Armistead family in December 1887, it is the first monument
dedicated to a Confederate officer placed at Gettysburg and caused some minor
controversy at the time of its placement in the Angle. Prior to the war,
Armistead had been close friends with General Hancock, but the division of the
nation caused one to choose the southern cause while the other remained loyal to
the Union. At Gettysburg, the two almost met again. The wounded Armistead told
his Union captors to give his regards to Hancock, also desperately wounded while
repulsing the charge. Though his wounds appeared to be non-fatal, the general
died in a Union field hospital on July 5. His body was recovered by friends, who
had his remains transported to Baltimore for burial in the yard of St. Paul's
Church. [Sharkman here]: Mortal enemies in a vicious war though these gentlemen were, neither Billy Ayres, nor his co-terrorists, nor even his benefactor, Il Douche, (nor me, for that matter - former USNR Supply Officer) are worthy to carry General Armistead or Lt. Cushing's jock.

When you hear that the vote on Manchin/ Toomey was 54-46 it was really 55-45. Four Democrats voted no (Baucus, Begich, Heitkamp, Pryor) and four Republicans voted aye (Collins, Kirk, McCain, Toomey).

Nietzsche respun, is it not?
Not that hard to teach yourself how to lower the debate to an a non-intellectual (purely emotivist) level.
Alasdair MacIntyre notes this has been a decay ever since Descartes and was fully achieved with Nietzsche. Ailansky just distilled it to the point that an idiot could understand it.

I'd note that I was just at a Catholic health conference where someone suggested we should be using Alainsky's tactics against "them" (there's always a nebulous "Them" to these people, conservatives, the bishops, conservative Catholics.
I almost did a spit take. Nobody called the [lady] on it either. Dude dedicated his book to Satan, but we should totally be using his methods to push our personal views of Catholic healthcare! Seriously you guys. (And I wonder why they don't like me at this conference.)

If you consider it, setting aside even a couple million for a *grant* program (which should be competitive, not needs based) to get people phones to call Boarder patrol is actually a pretty decent use of funds (although the phones should be locked to 911 and boarder patrol.)

Barbara Bain was quite a beauty in 1966.

This is an usual episode. Cinnamon Carter (Barbara Bain) received the mission; Not Mr Briggs; nor Mr Phelps.

Mr Briggs (Steven Whatshisname) left the show because he didn't want to work on the Sabbath.

So they replaced him with Peter Graves as Mr Jim Phelps.

513 Argh. Frigging Android. It'll read from the microSD card but won't write to it in any way. Says 'Permission denied.' Why would it default to that? Why make one of the critical hardware features distinguishing it from an Apple tablet into something borderline useless? Not completely useless because I can load up the microSD card on a PC and treat it as ROM.

If there is a place in there to change permissions without messing directly with system files it's very well hidden. My phone running the same generation of the OS doesn't have this problem but it is a different manufacturer and so the version of Android could have considerable differences.

It's 2013. This kind of crap shouldn't come up anymore in a shipping product.

Posted by: epobirs at April 18, 2013 04:36 AM (kcfmt)

514 This kind of crap shouldn't come up anymore in a shipping product.

Nobody tests anymore, they sample a few things and ship it.

Some of this is due to organizational structure.

Many companies put their test groups under the development organization, which is really only valid for unit/function level testing, and even then there's often pressure for the test groups to "help" development rather than crater their builds and flaky shit to the best of your ability.

Usability and system/integration testing should NEVER be under a development organization. They should report directly to the executive responsible for the product as a whole, or you risk having test results massaged and shaped by the development manager to look like good news. (this is one of the structural problems that mortally wounded OS/2 on the PPC)

518 Now there's a fire being reported at a refinery in Beaumont, Texas!

Unless its a torched bagel cooked too long in a microwave (I saw that clear out a whole building at IBM once), I'm calling "not-coincidence" on this whole string of shit.

We've transitioned from probably was, to probably ain't.

522 Texas explosion

"West," a farming community of 2700 outside of Waco, TX had a small fire at its fertilizer company that ended up with an explosion leveling a 5 block radius, 70 homes and an apt. complex. Firefighters and police responding to the call are included in those missing.

Who are the employees of the company? And how did the fire begin? Given the town's tiny size, why weren't volunteers from Waco and DFW immediately called for help responding to the fertilizer blaze?

523 Watching press briefing on Fox. Shock registered 2.5 on the Richter scale in Amarillo.

524 @panzernashorn: According to the press conference that just finished, the initial call came in at 7:23 and the explosion was at 7:50. There wouldn't have been time for assistance to arrive from Waco or DFW before the anhydrous ammonia tank blew. ATF and McLennan County are treating the area as a crime scene until they determine the cause of the fire for sure, although there's no evidence at this point that it wasn't an accident.

Crothall Laundry found a dead baby in the dirty sheets and called the hospital they service to pick up the "lost" body without first informing the police.

531 If we're a betting man -- which I kinda am -- and I could find someone to bet with on this -- legally of course; don't wanna break no laws -- I'd be going with this being accidental fire leading to consequent explosion in high risk area, not even arson, let alone terror or nostalgia bombing.

Anyone who's drove up IS 35 has seen this area. The town of West is tiny, mostly not more than a roadside shanty area for laborers, living in houses that used to make up the town that used to act as the hub of the agriculture that used to be the main activity around there. Dilapidated is the polite word for everything in and around the tiny town of West.

From all the reports that go on and mention it, and shown in the various videos, the explosion came after a fire that started somewhere near an fertilizer truck. This isn't like OK City where they made an ordinary nothing truck into a fertilizer bomb, this is already a fertilizer truck, so there's already always a constant permanent hazard from sparks and proximity to heat. All it would take would be a sudden wind change in a clear burn, and right there's a massive risk of disaster with the anhydro truck being exposed for any length of time, or even less if ignition sparks up a line.

If this were arson or terror, you sure wouldn't expect to see any pre-existing fire for people to look at and talk about, and on top of that, you sure wouldn't expect anyone to bother with a beat up old nothing near ghost town like West. The only way you get a 100 or so casualties in a plant like that is if everyone in or anywhere near the plant got hurt.

533 Lets try again, I fear that Cali kind of "terrorism" might become widespread. It was smart and non-violent; which might appeal to a larger population of the disaffected then poison or blowing people's legs off. I hope the government devotes 10% of the resources Boston gets to it.
