Bombs Were Made From 6-Litre Pressure Cookers; Recipe for DIY Pressure-Cooker Bomb Had Been Promoted by Al Qaeda Magazine "Inspire"

Not pipe bombs, then.

A person briefed on the Boston Marathon investigation says the explosives were in 6-liter pressure cookers and placed in black duffel bags.

The person says the explosives were placed on the ground and contained shards of metal, nails and ball bearings. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing.

The person says law enforcement officials have some of the bomb components but did not yet know what was used to set off the explosives.

Via The Jawa Report, an Al Qaeda DIY bomb-making recipe specifies just this type of device. The below is taken from Samir Khan's jihadi magazine "Inspire."

[S]ix pounds of smokeless powder, Christmas lights and battery operated clocks which were apparently intended to create a timing and triggering device of some type, sugar, shrapnel, pressure cooker, shot guns shells that were in the process of being dismantled to obtain their raw explosives.

...

The explosion that results from this device is a mechanical one. It results from the pressure caused by the gases and therefore it only works if contained in a high pressure environment. So you may use iron pipes, pressure cookers, fire extinguishers, or empty propane canisters....

The pressurized cooker is the most effective method.

...

You may substitute the inflammable substance extracted from matches by gunpowder used in cartilages.

Via @simontemplar and @laurawalkerkc.

Note: I suppose I should say the obvious: Improvised explosive designs are obviously not subject to patent and can be used by anyone. And people imitate other people's "tech" (I suppose this is a form of technology). I don't think that just because the bomb types were promoted by jihadis is any kind of strong proof that the bomber was a jihadi or read jihadi magazines. I'm pretty sure that the IRA, for example, knows all about this particular bomb type.

It's marginally suggestive but only marginally.

Update: Suspect at Hospital Cleared? Search of Home "Fruitless"? Via Walrus Rex, Suspect One is now Bystander One?

The day after two powerful bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, a mile-square area around Copley Square here remained cordoned off as a crime scene, and officials still had no one in custody. Investigators searched a house in a nearby suburb late Monday night, but later said the search had proved fruitless…

Late Monday night, law enforcement officials descended on an apartment building in the suburb of Revere, about five miles north of Copley Square, linked to a man the police took into custody near the scene of the bombings. But on Tuesday morning, one law enforcement official said investigators had determined that the man, who was injured in the blast and was questioned at the hospital, was not involved in the attack.

One cop's belief doesn't make it so, but it is worth noting.

Never felt right to me.

6 The 11 July 2006 Mumbai train bombings were a series of seven bomb blasts that took place over a period of 11 minutes on the Suburban Railway in Mumbai, the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra and the nation's financial capital. The bombs were set off in pressure cookers on trains plying the Western line of the Suburban Railway network. 209 people were killed and over 700 were injured. 21 A few things.

One even the "sourced" reports have been wrong in the chaos of this mess. So I'm not placing much stock in them quite yet.

But if they are right then this was not a "black powder" bomb as people keep saying. As I'm sure any of the guys from the gun thread can note, black powder and Smokeless powder behave pretty damned differently. (Frankly Smokeless powder is still an f'ing mystery to me. Black powder explodes I get it.)

Thirdly, Pressure cooker bombs are a pretty old idea. I mean look at this: http://what-if.xkcd.com/40/
So just because one group uses them, I'm not sure makes a "signature." (but I'm not an intel expert.)

38 At his weekly Capitol briefing Tuesday, House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer said the explosions in Boston demonstrates “why having the ability to dress security concerns is important,” and thus provides more evidence that sequestration should be turned off.

Asked by a reporter whether Monday’s attack makes the argument for addressing sequestration, Hoyer explained, “I think there are multiple reasons for ensuring that we invest in our security — both domestic and international security. That we invest in the education of our children. That we invest in growing jobs in America. And don’t pursue an irrational, across-the-board policy of cutting the highest priorities and the lowest priorities essentially the same percentage…. I think this is another proof of that — if proof is needed, which I don’t think frankly it is.”

67 Well, I didn't see that more surveillance is a good thing. But it is what will happen as a result of all this.
Who with any political power will stand in the way of more cameras?
It's the cameras that have, presumable, allowed us to figure out what happened. I assume FBI has footage of the bombs now, and hopefully who put them there.

And once you install the camera, who's going to argue against replacing it with a higher resolution camera.

And once you have the camera system. Who's gonna argue against saving the footage so you can later search it for suspects.

And once you have the camera system. Who's gonna argue against using computer vision to spot threats that humans can't see. Humans are really bad at staring at hours of surveillance footage. Computers are really good at it.

That's why I said what *will* happen.
More cameras, higher resolutions, longer storage, more automated computer vision analysis to find threats.

I guarantee this. Nobody with any political power will oppose it.

93 Now my wee brain understands how the pressure cooker in backpack in garbage can blew up...from the explosive stuff inside and a cell phone (guy on roof who is not a sniper?).

I think the WH is shaking that the people who did this may be of some radical Islamic connection. It would shoot (gun control!) all to hell of the peaceful religion.

I trust morons. Some say similar to IED's in Afghanistan. Mumbai 2006, etc.

Why are Occupy anarchist types not blamed before those wicked "right wingers" who, I don't think???, have a terrorist bombing behind their name. I am sure it somehow relates to the Tiller abortion murder (yes, spent waaay too much time on WaPo this weekend. I know all, and I mean all, of their canned answers).

This is most likely the opening salvo akin to P-E4 in a chess game that has just begun. I can see why after invading 3 seperate soverign nations to catch the perpetrators of 9/11, even the most hard core terror supporting civilians would keep their heads down today rather than taunt the United States after another attack. What I don't understand is how any group with enough planning and commitment to pull off this bombing would fail to step forward with their political agenda and claim credit for it. We'll see, I guess. But it reminds me of every cop procedural ever, the first main suspect being foreign and SUSPICIOUS, AND YOU IN THE AUDIENCE ARE RACIST FOR THINKING SO, because then we learn they are innocent. The real culprit in the final act of the show ends up being some rich white person or something. Like in the episode of Castle that dealt with a bomb being detonated at a plaza, at an OWS like rally, the culprit ended up being **spoiler alert** a young white female reporter who staged the event to help give herself a career boost.

The DailyMail article with tons of pics of the little boy killed and his family. Gah I started to tear up; the flowers on the house's front walk did it for me. That poor family, absolutely horrible.

I love my mother, but, as my five year old son informed her when she was taking care of him, "cooking is not her talent." Her meatloaf was a dreaded affair, as was her roast. Thankfully I inherited my father's mother's cooking genes. Pressure cookers are scary things, but I never thought of them as bombs. I believe thunder...Afghanistan IED's. But! We would not want to offend, y'all.

186 Pressure cookers are much more common in the third world - they quickly cook things that otherwise take a long time, like rice and dry beans; and using much less fuel in the process.

Being so common they are probably the most readily available device suitable for serving as a bomb casing in much of the middle east.

People here, with ready access to continuous electricity are more apt to use a slow cooker, rather than a pressure cooker for those types of items. Pressure cookers here in the states are more likely to be the very large type used for canning. Sure they'd still make a decent bomb casing, but you are probably going to have to go out of your way to get one.

Which leads me to agree that, if true, this is a pretty good indication that the perpetrator(s) are not home grown, but more likely foreign born and/or foreign influenced.

It could be that one of the pieces is the bit on the bottom that tells you the vessel's holding capacity?

I know nothing about pressure cookers so I don't know if they come in standard sizes. It could be that they figured out it was a rpessure cooker, then based on the size of the bag used and damage caused were able to deduce that it could only have been a cooker of the 6liter variety.

But honestly, I have no idea.

Yes it is, a "low explosive"

Low explosives

Low explosives are compounds where the rate of decomposition proceeds through the material at less than the speed of sound. The decomposition is propagated by a flame front .... This can happen under higher pressure or temperature, which usually occurs when ignited in a confined space.

Low explosives are normally employed as propellants. Included in this group are gunpowders and light pyrotechnics.

No, blackpowder/gunpowder most certainly is an explosive. Vary the mix of sulfur/charcoal/nitrate and ye get blasting powder, another explosive.

Where you may be confused is that smokeless powders - the stuff used in all modern cartridge firearms - is not an explosive. you can still make a bomb out of it, but they are much less predictable/reliable.

Or they have enough shrapnel (or a big enough piece) to get an idea of size. Pressure cookers are a fairly standard shape, if it wasn't blown to little itty bits (which actually given how they fail is quite likely, since the lids usually go first) you'd have a piece big enough to extrapolate size.

AQ is not one group that meets every other Friday of after prayers, they're a loose ideological movement with independent cells. Plenty of failed plots involving jihadists were foiled because the perps were fucking idiots

Oh, and a lot of the speculation is based on rumors and faulty reports. The big one is "authorities cut off cell service". In a crisis like this, mobile devices and cell phones go nuts, and the cell relays and switches can only handle so much traffic at one time

I know nothing about pressure cookers so I don't know if they come in standard sizes. It could be that they figured out it was a rpessure cooker, then based on the size of the bag used and damage caused were able to deduce that it could only have been a cooker of the 6liter variety.

Probably found a shard and from its curvature calculated the radius, since pressure cookers are cylindrical.

Seems like a hard thing to mistake. But then again, these reports are coming from reporters, If hte police say suspect packages, they might translate that into bombs.

But, if they found multiple unexploded ones, they would know the exact construction.

That is the thing that is still bugging me.

Here is how that was reported yesterday by th AP IIRC:

– One unexploded device was found at a hotel on Boylston Street near the bomb site and another unexploded device was found at an undisclosed location, Rep. Bill Keating, D-Massachusetts, said. Keating, a member of the House Homeland Security committee called it a “sophisticated, coordinated, planned attack.”

***

What, did Rep. Bill Keating (D) a member of the House Homeland Security Committee just pull that out of his ass?

Or is it a major clue.

Deval Patrick made a statement today that was something like--

no unexploded devices were found at the Boston Marathon.

Stretch it far enough and matches could be considered an explosive.

Posted by: Cicero Kid at April 16, 2013 01:19 PM (026j9)

307 "What's wrong with this picture???"

You make a lot of assumptions.

1) How is this hard to pull off? It doesn't take a lot of brain power to put together a simple device like this, conceal it in a bag, and then walk down a crowded street and drop it somewhere. All this talk about asymmetrical warfare and organization. One nut job could have easily done this. Just saying, don't make it out to be a bigger and more complicated deal than it is.

2) Middle East association doesn't make a lot of sense to me. For one, nobody claiming credit, for two, look at who our president is and what's going on overseas. Afghanistan is winding down, we are not being uber hawkish with Iran or Palestine or Egypt. It wouldn't make sense for them to rattle our cage... it would be rather stupid actually. Not to say it couldn't be some islamists, but it would just be very strange. Why now over a decade later? A decade of opportunity and they choose now? And after all this time this is all they can come up with? Not buying it.

To me this seems like an obvious lone ranger or perhaps two guys. Clearly there was some planning. I don't think it required much planning, but the planning it demonstrates seems to suggest someone that isn't totally batshit crazy. The real nuts seem to always commit suicide or put themselves in a situation where they are likely to die at the end. This person doesn't want to be caught. Either so they can do it again or so they can conceal their motives.

Selecting tax day is weird. I suppose it could have just been the event they were targeting, but why THAT event? There are lots of crowded events. Why choose the one on tax day? Clearly it wasn't a tax protester though, they would have hit a government building or something like that. The Alex Jones types are crazy with their rhetoric about government complicity, but who's to say it wasn't a lone person with similar motives? Some of these occupy wallstreet types, I wouldn't put it past them to do something like this to gin up more support for gun control. Maybe they wanted to appear like a tax protester?

The nature of the whole thing is odd.

319 Like other groups don't understand bombmaking signatures.

Odd, the shitty timing. Too late for much real damage.

Odd the lack of explosive power,"The devices themselves produced a lot of smoke and a fairly decent-sized flash. However, what is of note is that the brisance was relatively low -- the windows broken in the immediate area appear to have been broken by flying debris rather than the shock wave produced by the explosion itself. This implies a deflagrating rather than detonating explosive. I'll wait for official confirmation of what the explosive compound(s) that were used actually are, but my first-blush guess after viewing the high-res video that was posted on the 'net from a news organization several times leads me to a couple of possibilities for the material(s) involved. In short, it looks at first blush like a pipe bomb sort of device. We shall see."

Well like I mentioned above, Boston is a port city. That means lots of access to methods of entry and exit from the country.
Also, the Marathon is not just an American race. It brings people from all over the world, which means it brings MEDIA from all over the world. If you want some exposure, you can't find many other targets that have THAT many people packed into such close quarters from so many different parts of the country and the globe.

And then there's the fact that Boston and it's surrounding areas are home to a shitload of colleges and universities. I would not be at all surprised to find out this was perpetrated either by an Islamist attending university here in the States, or a dipshit asshole Occutard-type; a real disciple of Bill Ayers and his whore wife. Honestly my first thought (well second, after Islamists) was that this might be tied to Anonymous.

Boston Marathon is a big deal, and an outdoor, openly accessible public sporting event. You can't easily sneak a pressure cooker into a football stadium. Even Fourth of July gatherings have security to target people with booze, so those aren't easy targets either. This was simply an easy target for a Boston area bomber.

Tax day has no significance. If the target had somehow been ideological it might mean something. But as it is, with just a random selection of marathon bystanders, the tax day timing is just a coincidence.

That's a semi-brilliant point.

You're correct - those on the anti-government militia types, by and large, simply want to be left alone. By inclination, they are seceding from society to "protect" them and their's.

They are not trying to change society. Or conduct a war. They are withdrawing into their "fortress".

The only truly violent one I can think of were "The Arm, the Sword, and the Turkeyleg" or whatever they were called.

On the other hand, leftards are trying to change society to their twisted point of view. And think that excuses all.(Leftard Terrorist teaching at Columbia, anyone?).

Muslims? Same dealio - religious mass murder and conversion is the bread and butter of their religion everywhere they go at all times in history.

This is one reason the Ft Hood shooter has never been classified as a terrorist, because strictly speaking he doesn't fit that definition. His only association seems to be the fact that he's muslim. 419 I'm honestly surprised it's taken this long for Boston to be hit with a serious attack... (&c.)

You're thinking too clearly. AQ & affiliates are, fortunately, pretty stupid. They go Big, not efficient. Fort Hood guy is the only exception so far. Whoever's idea it was to tell him to do what he did is an expert-level terrorist. The rest are dipshits.

The thing I immediately thought pointed to a local Boston wackjob in this case is the symbolic insignificance of Boston and its events/holidays/etc. to everyone outside Boston. What does a "Patriot Day bombing" mean to America? Nothing. It's a bombing like any other, a wackjob job.

But thinking about it, the target selection is suggestive of a non-American in Boston who doesn't register American cultural (in)significance very clearly. The local-media hullabaloo would have made it seem like there was a really important America Thing going on that maybe he should bomb. Thinking Big.

Remember, AQ thought the WTC was something other than an office building, that our reaction to its destruction would be a reaction to the destruction of something other than the people inside it (and an office building)--basically, that it was America's money-penis, and that chopping it off would be totally debilitating.

Because they're stupid. They're doing TV. They're "high concept." And bombing "Patriot Day" and/or the Boston Marathon is stupid high-concept TV. Trademark shit.

If AQ ever grows out of its adolescent-entertainment tastes, they'll do things more like you're thinking they might, and we're probably in trouble. But they haven't done that yet.

421 2) Middle East association doesn't make a lot of
sense to me. For one, nobody claiming credit, for two, look at who our
president is and what's going on overseas. Afghanistan is winding down,
we are not being uber hawkish with Iran or Palestine or Egypt. It
wouldn't make sense for them to rattle our cage... it would be rather
stupid actually. Not to say it couldn't be some islamists, but it would
just be very strange. Why now over a decade later? A decade of
opportunity and they choose now? And after all this time this is all
they can come up with? Not buying it.

The nature of the whole thing is odd.

Posted by: Andrew at April 16, 2013 01:19 PM

The jihadists are none too happy about the drone strikes, and those are going on unabated. The "claiming credit" as I said is bullshit assumptions leftover from the 70s. We weren't engaged anywhere on 9-11 either, so there goes that one. Why over a decade later? The islamists don't work on short time frames that we do. If it takes them 30 years, they'll retaliate. These are people still holding grudges from the 15th century

As far as why now after a decade of opportunity? They've been stopped or failed plenty of times, if this is a jihadist attack then it's one that succeeded this time

Why use the adjective "innocent"? This one bugs me, especially when Muslims use it. They'll tell you that Islam declares it sinful to kill innocent civilians. But in Islam, there is no concept of atonement. In Islam, there are lots of "sins" that are simply unforgivable and will enrage Muslim adherents. Blasphemy, apostasy, and depending on how radical you are, lots of smaller ones, like taking off your headscarf in front of someone who is not a direct relative.

So it's no comfort when Muslims tell you, "Oh no, we are peaceful, it is unforgivable to kill innocent people."

In 3-4 minutes, they would explode, blowing the sinker out the end hard enough to go through a 2X4. I don't agree. As an event, yes, the marathon is huge. But the attack wasn't on the same scale. We don't have hundreds of dead. It was a small bomb in a specific area. You could get the same damage in a busy restaurant or a high school football stadium with zero security. There are quite literally countless opportunities to do exactly the same or more damage every single day in virtually any city in the whole country. The only part of what you're saying that makes some sense is the increased media coverage, that's something you wouldn't get in a restaurant. But at the same time, how big of a deal is that? Even in a restaurant you'd get just as much coverage, but it would be after the fact.

And that was how he became an early recipient of a "long thumb" middle-finger transplant. 478 One thing is clear, there is no shortage of homicidal maniacs who take keen pleasure in thinking about, planning and carrying out wreckage and carnage.

The small scale of the attack here means it could be anything from someone who just wants to see people cut down to someone who wants to see specific people cut down to someone with a bizarre political motivation or conspiracy. That includes insurance fraud, revenge, a psycho mass killer, a zealot of any description. I wish we knew all that authorities knew, could see video, sift tips. Is "hoodie guy" on film? Are they still looking for that guy?

479 It's only in Mass and Maine ( because Maine used to be part of Mass). Apparently Wisconsin recognizes it, but I don't think it's a big deal. It's a celebration of a local event, so to speak.

480 McVeigh was something of an enigma. He had unexplained time in the Phillipines in areas of Islamic jihad. Where did he get his money? How did he pay for his meanderings about the country leading up to the bombing? He never talked or explained himself. He requested that his execution go forward--reportedly because he was haunted by nightmares of the 19 children including babies killed along with their Mothers who had business that morning in Murrah Building. According to guards he mentioned heaaring their screams over and over again. He was not a Conservative.

TEL AVIV – An al-Qaida-allied group in the Gaza Strip claimed to WND that there have been arrests of jihadists in both Pakistan and Afghanistan as part of the probe into yesterday’s Boston Marathon explosions.

The arrests could not be immediately confirmed.

Members of Gaza’s Jihadiya Salafia group further said that al-Qaida is being credited for the attack in its affiliated online forums.

The Gaza sources told WND the online al-Qaida forum messages claimed the bombings were an al-Qaida response to a U.S. military airstrike that killed a high-profile Taliban leader and four other Taliban members last week near Afghanistan’s eastern border with Pakistan.

Jihadia Salafia represents al-Qaida in Gaza.

It was not immediately clear whether the Internet claims should be taken seriously or simply represented jihadists utilizing the explosions....

The Pakistani Taliban today reportedly denied any role in the marathon bombings.

I wonder if the wound pattern indicates they weakened one side of the pressure cooker, making it a shaped charge?

Posted by: Jean at April 16, 2013 01:14 PM (fW/Ev)"

That would not make a shaped charge and in any event, shaped charges don't work with low explosives. Directional devices like a claymore, on the other hand...

.
"While there is no current indication to suggest that the events in Boston are indicative of a broader plot," she said in a written statement."
.
She continued, "I feel confident in making these statements even though we have no suspects in custody, and we pretty much have no freaking clue about anything."*

496 Hey, y'all...please refresh my memory.

On September 12, 2012,
after the terrorist attack(s) at embassies through out the Middle East,
and the consulate of Libya in Benghazi. You know, when the Let Me Eat My
Waffle Golf Pro spoke in the Rose Garden and refused to call the
activities on 9/11, by radical Islamic terrorists, terrorism? Didn't he
say that he would not "rest" until the murderers of Ambassador Stevens
were caught? And how he sent the FBI about 3 weeks later to the "crime"
scene that was not secure and had been trashed by locals, with stuff
collected by reporters (classified documents). So, FBI was on the ground
in Benghazi for 3 or 4 hours. The murderers were quickly found and brought to justice, right? Just like Oblahblah promised that day in the Rose Garden? And now he, finally getting around, a day late, to call this an act of terrorism, he made that promise again today. Or, that is the blurb I head driving in the car, as I would rather poke hot needles in my eardrums than to listen to him. Seriously...we could be under a nuclear attack, during a Cat 5 hurricane hitting my coast, and the Madrid Fault Earthquake rattling, with a large meteor heading my way, and I would still refuse to listen. [But I digress and! am going to have wine again today and to heck with my diet]

Perhaps I have missed it...but how
many bad misunderstood youth have been brought to justice for the attacks and murders of four
Americans including Ambassador Stevens in Benghazi? Has The Three Point
Shooter Who Can Barely Make A Lay-up Preening Petunia followed through with
that terrorist attack? You know what he said in the debate with Romney,
he was all over it, right?

What about the recent death of
American Diplomat, Anne Smedinghoff, who was murdered in Afghanistan
about ten days ago. Kerry, following in Hillary's heels, stated the
"convoy" was struck. In reality, or for now, the story changed and she
was on foot. Multiple choice.

The Taliban have been busy. In a UK
Daily Mail story about Ms Smedinghoff, this was also said about the
radical Islamic terrorist group:

"They [Taliban] also have been staging complex

attacks in Kabul and other urban areas. On March 14, the Afghan

intelligence service seized a massive truck bomb packed with 7,257

kilograms (8 tons) of explosives on the eastern outskirts of Kabul. The

truck apparently was going to be used in an attack on a NATO facility in

the capital."

But it could not be those peace-loving
barbarians, could it, rigging pressure cookers in trashcans in Boston? There is probably a list of suspects, and The Religious Right Wing terrorists are probably #1 and the Tally-bohn is #10.

I have all confidence in Dear Leader and Kerry to
look on every golf course with OJ for terrorists and be brought to justice, with Holder presiding over the fairness of it all. At least the FBI did
not have to wait nearly a month to secure the crime scene! There's that!

I thank God for the men and women, some trained as physicians and soldiers and emergency workers and police, and some Americans who just have a heart and courage as big as this nation...I thank God for them immediately giving aid to those who were so hurt and bleeding. That is what gives me hope. It sure is not our...coughing fit..."leadership."

One of the best quotes today regarding Terrorist attack in Boston, and the response of Americans who make my heart swell with pride:

"But here's what I DO know. If it's one person or a HUNDRED people,
that number is not even a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a
percent of the population on this planet. You watch the videos of the
carnage and there are people running TOWARDS the destruction to help
out."

"So when you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear or just
garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye
and think, 'The good outnumber you, and we always will," he continued.

499 In answer to the query: how is a pressure cooker weaponised? Simple. Requires 2 ingredients most households have freely available plus some sawdust. Ingredient 1 is added to sawdust in Pressure Cooker. Ingredient 2 is then added (later), lid tightened. Drop. You have 5 minutes to vacate the area.

I won't say what the ingredients are but this information came from the training for a Chemical Goods Truck License ie. if , as the driver, you see these mixing, RUN! The person who went on the course was a member of an outlaw motorcycle gang and he relayed this to me. He wanted to try it for fun. The conversation occured back in 1993.

Personally, I think a steel thermos flask would be an easier option for the perpetrator..
