More Gosnell: Wikipedia Weights Deleting Gosnell's Entry Due to Failure to Attract National Media Attention;
Amanda Marcotte Declares, Contrary to the Facts, That Gosnell's Abbatoir Was "Underground" and Pro-Lifers Drove Women There

The last one first. Here's Amanda Marcotte, in a tweet, just making things up:

Pro-choicers support quality women's health care, and are the enemies of those who force women into underground clinics like Gosnell's.

The claim she's making is based on the typical rhetoric that if you ban abortions, women will be driven to "back-alley" abortionists and many will die due to incompetent surgery.

Trouble is, that rhetoric is about a hypothetical situation in which abortion is outlawed. Abortion is not outlawed in America -- nor in Pennsylvania. Gosnell's clinic was not "underground;" it was, by appearances, a government-permitted abortion mill.

In fact, despite performing illegal late-term abortions, it still got no inspections or negative sanctions from the state -- specifically, the Grand Jury report stated, due to pro-choice politics, which demanded that, contrary to the law, no abortion clinic should have any inspections or scrutiny.

So what could she mean about "underground"? She might mean that Pennsylvania outlawed very late-term abortions. And thus women had to go to Gosnell's dingy, bloody house of horrors to get them.

So what she might mean is... the crimes that Gosnell is accused of should not have been crimes at all, because live-delivering nine-month babies and then snipping their spinal cords on the operating table should have been legal.

In which case we understand Marcotte's only concern here: That these abortions should have been performed in a cleaner, nicer, more professional setting, as legal abortions might be conducted. Because she'd have them be legal.

In this version of things, the only problem with Gosnell is that he didn't keep things clean and let one woman die to a botched abortion. The seven babies killed on the table? They simply should have been euthanized in more sanitary conditions, in a nicer room, with better lighting and a better staff-- a better staff, because they'd be working in a legal operation, and thus Gosnell wouldn't have to hire sketchy scrubs to do the butchering.

So Amanda Marcotte thinks the only problem with this venue was its aesthetics and professionalism -- if they were butchering live-delivered children in a cleaner venue, she'd have no problem.

I don't know how to inform her that the dirtiness of the lab -- this perhaps traceable to pro-lifers, who made the process illegal, and of course illegal operations tend to be dirty ones -- is really not the top consideration here. It's a consideration -- one woman died due to the incompetence and unsanitariness of the abortion mill -- but not the only consideration, and not the top one.

Honestly I don't even know why I responded to her. She's plainly a lunatic.

Meanwhile, Wikipedia is now considering deleting the entry on Gosnell. Their rationale? It's a local murder story, nothing more. And they know that because the story has failed to generate any attention in the national media.

Note that they're all working from the same playbook: If we just keep silent on this, if we impose a coordinated embargo, essentially the story just goes away.

I don't suppose I have to mention Orwell. You were already on that page.

And so was Wikipedia.

45 The fact that Gosnell operated not only in his clinic in PA, but also in Delaware, at legal clinics that were highly trafficked, would say to me that Amanda Marcotte is a fucking psycho. Gosnell was not in any way a back alley abortion doctor. People knew him, went to him, paid him to kill their unborn babies. Enough of his "patients" had to go to the hospital after his procedures because of how badly they were done, leading to infections and perforated organs, that ANYONE FROM THOSE HOSPITALS COULD HAVE REPORTED THE CLINIC to follow-up on his butchery and shut him down. But even when they did, nothing was done to stop him. Because Thou Shalt Not Hinder Abortion.

My goodness is Mandy an embarrassment. Kermit's clinic was mainstream, and the "pro choice" Republican Gov made the decision to halt inspections.
Note:

Pennsylvania's health department stopped routine inspections of
abortion facilities in the state after Tom Ridge, a pro-choice
Republican, became governor in 1995.

Health department lawyers "changed their legal opinions and
advice to suit the policy preferences of different governors," health
department official Janet Staloski said in grand jury testimony. In this
case, she said the state didn't want to be "putting a barrier up to
women" who wanted abortions.

In
1999, high-level Pennsylvania officials met to consider starting up
regular inspections again but decided not to, state lawyer Kenneth Brody
testified, according to the grand jury report.
He told the grand jury that officials were concerns that abortion
clinics wouldn't meet inspection standards and then there "would be less
abortion facilities."

The state's politics-driven policy continued until the gruesome allegations regarding Gosnell came to light.

Inspections finally resumed in 2010 after more than 15 years. When pro-life Republican Gov. Tom Corbett took office in 2011

89 Marcotte's comment should be Exhibit A in what we are all talking about this week. She hasn't read any of the grand jury report, nor followed the testimony. Gosnell's clinic was legal, licensed, located on a visible streetcorner, and supposedly inspected by the PA Health Department...except it wasn't. Ever. Because the feminists in the state health dept. didn't want abortion clinics inspected. Gosnell was a licensed physician, but nobody else who worked in that clinic was licensed to do anything.

This was anything but a back-alley abortion mill.

I actually knew a back-alley abortion doctor when I was young. He did abortions because he cared about the girls and wanted to help them. All the girls in my town knew where we could get an abortion if we needed one. Gosnell didillegal abortionsfor the cash. Because they were illegal, he knew he could scrimp on safety and sanitation and nobody would complain. He made a small fortune doing this.

93 Leftism is a severe mental disorder, not an actual political ideology. Once you accept that the rest of the dots simply connect themselves. Perhaps the greatest irony is that material percentages of the right and erstwhile poseur right don't wish to accept that. They treat politics like it's a debating club and a coffee klatch. It's not. It's serious business. Life and death. Literally. It matters for whom you vote. And for whom you don't vote.

150 Marcotte says stupid stuff all the time that I find merely annoying. But this latest comment of hers is reprehensible. Abortion has been "safe and legal" in this country for a really long time now. If women go to back alley clinics still, it is out of an abundance of stupidity, or because they want an abortion of the type that is illegal still--the late term ones. And there is a reason the late term abortions are illegal, because all but the truly soulless can agree that at some point that "mass of cells" becomes a viable human being that can live on its own outside the womb.

But I guess Marcotte is one of an alarming number of people living in America today that are truly soulless. The devil must be getting pretty tired, he's been so busy harvesting souls.

200 Somehow I missed jumping in on the Gosnell threads earlier this week, what with my work schedule and all, and I feel like anything I add to this discussion will be a little late for the party.

I rarely get emotional about news stories, particularly political ones. I might get a little hit to the gut at first if it's bad, but then I just go straight to resignation that whatever just happened, it won't end well. Maybe I'm just a pessimist. My usual go-to positions is either jaded resignation or mockery.

This Gosnell business has gotten me viscerally fucking angry. I'm not sure at whom. I'm angry that this happened. I'm angry that only half the people who even know about it are angry. I'm angry because I don't see a way to make sure this never happens again anytime soon.

Anyone here who's familiar with what my wife and I went through with our daughter last fall has a good idea where I'm coming from (I won't rehash it here). All I guess I can really do is pray that ultimately there is justice, in this world or the next.

Any one of them would be the monster Gosnell is if given the chance. "

I have a feeling the story would become much less "local" if any of those things were to happen. Strange, isn't it?

My daughter was born at 26 weeks back in September, and she managed to survive 19 days in the NICU before she passed away. In case you're wondering, yes, my wife and I are managing as best we can given the circumstances.

Also, another thing that gets me angry is that adoption is never an option anymore. Before my wife got pregnant last year, we had been going through the adoption process for at least two years with only one interview to show for it. We've gotten back in the pipeline recently, but it seems like the go-to nowadays for unplanned children is either a trip to the Planned Parenthood (or worse) or trying to parent the kid in a most likely (but not always) unstable situation. There are thousands of parents out there waiting to adopt and tons of kids that would be better off with them, but the domestic adoption numbers nowadays are so low that the Feds don't even keep stats on them anymore (I don't recall where I read that recently, so I apologize for no linky.)

However, he warns that the analysis on the website may leave out certain important factors. Attending college, especially brand-name colleges, comes with intangible perks such as personal connections made while attending, mentorship and the development of social and networking skills. Colleges located in certain geographies also tend to produce better results, simply by virtue of being located close to an industry.Finance and tech on the East and West Coasts respectively are an obvious example of this.

320 The built-in problem with Wikipedia is the "reliable source" rule. You can only post an article if the information is contained in a mainstream media story. You're not allowed to use blogs or do "original research" using books. So the MSM dictates the content. A video of Anthony Weiner masturbating and posted on AOSHQ would not be "reliable", whereas an NBC story stating that he was hacked would be fine. These two rules are uniformly ignored, of course, in articles favoring liberals or attacking conservatives. A Facebook comment or link to Andrew Sullivan will do.

In terms of crimes, Milk's murder should really be considered a footnote to the murder of Mayor George Moscone, who was the killer's other victim that day.

The assassination of a board member / councilman / whatever the fuck Milk was, regardless of his orientation, kind of pales to killing the fucking mayor.

Let me put it this way - if Mayor George Moscone had lived but Harvey Milk still died, we may not have Sen. Dianne Feinstein today.

Well then using that logic arent we technically aren't we "using" the deaths of the children in the Gosnell situation to advance a policy agenda? Don't get me wrong I don't agree with them but if the parents actually believe that changing us gun policies would save lives then I don't care if they advocate for it myself.

352 I was once an active Wikipedia administrator, so perhaps I understand the place better than some others.

The thing about Wikipedia is that there is essentially no one in charge. Anyone can propose any article for deletion. It doesn't mean that the article will be deleted. A significant portion of the articles proposed for deletion aren't. If you go to the deletion proposal, you'll see a long string of Keep votes, a fairly high number of "SNOW Keep" votes. That's wikipedia slang for "This thing doesn't have a snwoball's chance in hell of being deleted, so let's quit wasting time and resources talking about it."

What's happened here is that someone, probably for ideological reasons, decided to try to suppress this article, and is in the process of being slapped down, hard.

This article will not be deleted.

While the decision does not mean American taxpayers will begin sending arms immediately, Obama claimed his administration could legitimately provide military assistance to United Nations-backed Somali authorities under existing U.S. export and foreign aid statutes.

383 Like I said in the previous thread, Sodom and Gomorrah have nothing on us. And look what happened there.

God spoke to Abraham and Abraham pleaded with him to spare the cities if he could locate ten good men within city limits. (Genesis 18:16-33) Ten could not be found. Two angels went to Lot and warned him to take his family and servants away because God's destruction was going to come down on the cities.(Genesis 19)

My point is that God withholds destruction for the sake of the righteous. When good people cannot be found, or leave voluntarily, or are expelled, or are killed, that's when you know it's coming. It'll be swift and total.

and, a man-hamburgerist

I used to resist the idea that there was something sexist about pro-meat and anti-vegetarian sentiments, but no more. What I find interesting about this is that the consumption of meat as a way of homosocial bonding through the disdain of women fits really neatly into other media portrayals of how men are supposed to bond – generally by a shared loathing and/or objectification of women. In this commercial, women are so contemptible that anything associated with femininity, even something as mundane as eating vegetables, must be harshly and loudly rejected. And the object that men bond over in this case isn’t a woman’s body, but a greasy hamburger.

Wheatie, sweetie, laws and the Obamas have no relationship. In all seriousness, I do no think they have taken title to the Hawaii estate, but, there are lots of clever lawyers who will figure out a way to get it donated to a trust for the Obamas and that will be that.

Learn from the democrats - they know how to do this.

In the midst of the Newtown tragedy, they picked up the Alinski playbook and jumped on gun control. They didn't get what they wanted, but they had the intellegence to focus on the one thing that no thinking person could deny - you should check if the person you're selling a gun to is a criminal or crazy.

Regardless of all the infantile 2nd amendment paranoia, 90% of the people will say "yes, that's a good idea".

Now, in the middle of this late term abortion horror story, which should be getting covered just as much as Newtown, we on the right have our collective fingers up our asses with no clue of what to do.

If we weren't the "stupid party", one of our elected officials would have a "common sense" bill all written up and backed unanimously by the right and by a majority of the left that says, simply, you don't kill a child that is born alive.

Don't overreach. Don't throw in every fucking wish of the anti-abortion community. Just put a bill out there that accomplishes one easy-to-understand goal.

Then bask in the publicity. Let the conversations wander to the edges of the abortion contraversy, but never stray from the focus so that the issue can be conflated.

This is what politics is about.

I wish to fuck we had someone on our side who knew how to play it.

Re: Campaign Ideas

Dear Senator Edwards:

I had a couple of ideas for getting the campaign off to a fucking roaring start. I ran some numbers and discovered that (1) Orange County North Carolina has a shocking lack of women’s reproductive health centers, and (2) your new home there has 28,000 square feet of space. What better way to address community health needs — and appeal to the women’s vote — than by installing an abortion clinic inside your own house? It would only take up about 500 square feet total (not counting the exterior biohazard dumpster), and you appear to have a fucking awesome space between the indoor basketball court and reflective koi pond.

471 #418 Come on. You know damn well that any Republican who proposed a bill to simply apply the murder statutes to the killing of a live-born infant without everything else the pro-lifers want would be instantly labeled a RINO sellout and there would be a firestorm. After all, implicit in an offer of such legislation is acknowledgement that if the baby dies in utero, that is just fine. Can't have that.

Liberals know how to play this game. Conservatives don't. That's why we have creeping socialism in this country.Liberals are always satisfied with small steps to the left. Conservatives never are satisifed with a small step, because it isn't "bold" enough or "taking on the establishment" enough. It's always, always seen as a compromise with the Left.

493 Meanwhile, there are parents who would give anything to have a baby or adopt these late-term "clumps of cells."

There is a special room in hell warming up for Gosnell, his assistants, and the media who refuse to tell the truth to Americans of these monsters and Gosnell who made over a million dollars to murder babies and maim teen-age girls.

This story, in my lifetime, only compares to reading of the Holocaust and Jeffrey Dahmer (plus 9/11, POW's, etc).

My horror does not begin to explain how sick and depraved these people were. Those baby's cannot tell this story, but the reporters should. In addition they ignore the BLACK women who speak of near death from hemorrhage, hysterectomies due to lacerated uteruses, abcesses, overdose, and their changing their minds and being tied down and drugged and aborted anyway.

These are BLACK women the reporters are ignoring. Mostly BLACK babies who were killed at birth and whose feet were saved like totems of war.

Shame the reporters. Shame Congress. Shame them all in ignoring this story. What are they afraid of? Planned Parenthood's funding? The Democrat party platform? I have no words to express my disgust at the unfairness of the press...which I have always known, but I had no idea how desperate they were to protect the preznit until 9/12/12 and Benghazi.

It isn't abortion per se, it's that the right babies be aborted. That's a very progressive attitude.

One day, Marcotte will face the other end of the progressive movement: when one is no longer of use to the State, and has in fact become a burden to the State, the State will offer you a nice cup of hemlock tea. That thought does not warm the cockles of my heart.

508 466 Sorry I haven't read all of the comments so I don't know if anyone else has brought this up. The state of VA has voted and passed a bill requiring strict enforcement of medical health standards to the state's abortion clinics.
After the vote, protesters shouted "Shame on You", and "You have blood on your hands". The protesters testified that these standards were medically unnecessary and would limit access to abortions because some clinics would have to close down.

This has been done in many states now and it is just brilliant. Abortion supporters are forced to admit that their houses of horrors couldn't stand up to the scrutiny of the most basic hygiene requirements.

Takes the teeth out of the whole "back alley" warnings.

With these people, any attention is good attention. That you hate them is, to them, proof that they are VIPs. Think Paris Hilton really cares that most people think she's a skank? No. It just means she's popular and that's the most important thing in the world.

510 They are not non-profits.

Posted by: rockmom

Ah, the evolution from the legitimate non-profit charity like the Salvation Army, to the non-profit organization that only means that those involved spend every penny on themselves that the non-profit "earns" -- or TAKES as the case may be via tax funded grants and awards.

What is most troublesome is that the non-profit publicly funded businesses today are by no means charities, and neither are "charities" that wealthy people establish in their own name, for their own benefit, prestige and wealth. But, these same non-profit business ventures are absolutely the vogue means of starting your own business, as if an entrepreneur in the small business sense of yesteryear.

The junior Bush and the Obama administrations have been and still are strongly encouraging these non-profit start-ups.

Some people just can't see or won't admit what's coming by this national business venue set up. And those involved include the co-bloggers here. But hey, what's wrong with making a profit, even when "accomplished" at taxpayer expense.

Nonprofits are just tax-free entities that need to mark a zero balance on their profit sheet at the end of the year. They do not have to show WHERE the funds they get go; thus, the heads of nonprofits driving around in fancy cars and getting salaries what would make a CEO blush. But only the religious ones are eeeeeeeeevil and should lose their status.

The depiction of political / environmental nonprofits in "House of Cards" was brilliant, for those that haven't seen.

517 Any story about women being forced to use someone like Gosnell is crap. Gosnell charged a lot for his services---any woman who went to him could afford a mass transit ride from Philadelphia across the river to New Jersey, which has very liberal abortion laws.

I managed to read the first 100 pages of the grand jury report, and one of the things that struck me is how much of this horror was ignored by the "enlightened"--two Governors, presitigious Philly hospitals like UPenn and Jefferson, who had to treat some of Gosnell's victims, and the pro-choice movement itself. What I concluded was that well-educated, affluent women (and men) think that sending poor minority women to butcher shops like Gosnell's is a reasonable price to pay so that their own right to have a clean, safe abortion at a private physician's office won't be questioned. As someone mentioned above, two pro-choice Governors agreed to suspend inspections of abortion clinics. Local emergency rooms saw some of Gosnell's victims--not only the woman he killed, but women who were maimed, hemoraging , suffering infection and pain because he had left parts of the fetus inside them--AND NOT ONE REPORTED IT. There is a national association of abortion clinics--I can't remember the name--but they do have voluntary standards. Gosnell tried to become a member. Someone came to inspect the clinic, noted that it was "the worst she'd ever seen", but did nothing to report it. The grand jury report shows a photo of Gosnell's price chart--different rates for different levels of anasthesia. The chart says straight out that they recommend the highest level for FORCED abortions. He was actually advertising it, at least within the clinic.

There must be someone--a lot of someones--on our side who can take this stuff and wrap it around the neck of radical pro-choicers. With special emphasis on how many of Gosnell's clients had dark skins, just as Margaret Sanger would have wished.

518 Six months, a year from now; the horrors downplayed and fading, the left will pound the "underground because of the pro-lifers" tent peg into the ground as an incontrovertible (in their minds) fact. When cornered by the truth it will become "an isolated, local aberration that barely merits a response". When defeated, they'll say war on women.
