Bizarre: Former Felony Murderer Is Now a Professor at Columbia;
Meanwhile, Pediatric Neurosurgeon with No Criminal Record is a "Monster"

A strange juxtaposition of stories from Hot Air. Convicted felony murderer Kathy Boudin is an adjunct professor at Columbia.

But Ben Carson is, according to the left, a "monster."

He saved lives while Kathy Boudin was ending them. Obviously he's a monster and she's a Distinguished Intellectual. Nice leftwing people on Twitter said so.

Recovering former "brain-dead liberal" Evan Sayet has some thoughts that may partly explain this mysterious method of "thought" of the left. He's written a book called Kindergarden of Eden: How the Modern Liberal Thinks, which he talks about with the Daily Caller.

His thesis is that America, since WWII, and until 9/11, has been pretty idyllic. Not much bad has happened -- at least not compared to the rest of the world, and the rest of history. This has created a perverse situation in which stupid thinking is sort of permitted to live, protected from hard consequences -- stupid thinking will not lead you do death any longer, as it once did.* It might just lead you to a professorship at Columbia.

* You know how aristocrats showed themselves to be such by wearing clothes with little practical utility? If you wore those flouncy tufts into a smithy, you'd catch fire. But this was the point: To advertise the fact that the aristocrat was not a laboring man. He was elevated above the plane of utility.

It seems to me there's a certain ostentatiousness about liberal thinking that is calculatedly non-functional and flouncy itself. By advocating a pattern of thinking that is dismissive of practical consequences, the advocate of such thoughts announces himself as someone so advanced and so well-off that he does not have to consider practical considerations.

Hm. Maybe.

Thus you have calls to get us involved in every pissant war and insurrection on the planet.... becuase to the politicians, its a game... there is no consequence.

Which is why we suddenly have Suadis on the Freindly Fly list... why our Southern border is not secure from Felons, or potential terrorists... and why they are destroying our military thorugh overuse and underfunding...

Ayers and Dohrn raised Boudin's child. And he is true to his upbringing. Yay!

The old Greek aesthetics, Truth and Beauty, were determined to be such because they were ideals that the normal man or woman could aspire to, and in doing so, as individuals, would make their society better.

In our era of inverted morality, it is hatred of the good for being good. Hatred of beauty, elevation ofugliness, and the creation of situational morality that trumps Truth.

These are the "morals" that are inculcated into our entertainment and mass culture. It's a constant bombardment of the inversion.

161 Judging by the reaction of some to two female mannequins, a Size 12 and a Size 16, that a Swedish department store put on display, what Sayet is talking about is more of a First World problem of having too much time on their hands while being shielded from the consequences of stupid actions.

What was the reaction to those mannequins? The permanently aggrieved that a progressive socialist environment coddles complained those two mannequins promoted obesity .

We need either SMOD or EMP or both to reduce the free time that allows such addlepated thinking.

Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at April 02, 2013 07:54 PM (ztdrb)

162 Huh. I've been kicking this idea around for a couple of years now, that much of our current ills are caused at least in part because irresponsibility and stupidity are no longer fatal. It's nice to know that I'm not alone in that, and I think Ace is on to something with his concept of supercilious thought patterns being the mark of a new aristocracy (see, I don't NEED to think to survive, how enlightened am I?).

If you couple the two together, you get a society in which it is a mark of refinement to be a blithering idiot and so impractical as to be nearly incapable of surviving anywhere outside of a very few specific environments (say, a very carefully cultivated academia). When it becomes too prevalent, you get a society that simply cannot function and will inevitably collapse under its own weight, at which point stupidity and irresponsibility become capital offenses again and the problem evens itself out.

Sadly, the suffering involved in bringing these fools back to reality, or letting them be killed by it, is almost unfathomable. It has brought down more than a few civilizations, and we have a lot further to fall than they did

I consider it my duty to help my grandchildren get through The Burning Time. I still remember things from my childhood, like how to kill a chicken and clean it, how to make dandelion greens, how to stretch 2 meals into 4.

My library is full of classics and useful books on gardening as well as the Foxfire volumes.

And I consider it my duty also to remember and tell my grandchildren of how things used to be. I have already told them the pitfalls of student loans and bad college majors.

183 But Ace, that "flouncy" thinking that has looped back on itself. It may have started as ideological and originally eschewed practical consequences, but now those same people pretend their ideas are not only practical, but that they are shared by the downtrodden (they also think that because their ideas are shared by the downtrodden, or are designed to help the downtrodden, that makes them right---but that's another topic). In other words, they believe their ideas are *all about* practical considerations. Yet, the hardest thing for me is to actually get liberals to consider that there might be an opportunity cost to their ideas. Not that it will be minimal, or can be mitigated, but that one exists at all. Remarkable.

188 Our institutional welfare system is another example of this theory. A welfare recipient usually has to do something quite extreme just to change the nature of the situation he is in. No matter what conventional thing they choose to do, their life NEVER changes.

A street gang gives a lot of them the opportunity to meet that 'extreme' requirement. It gives them that shred of control over their own situation.

Heroin is another means to the same end. Even if it's just an illusion, it allows people to alter the status of their lives.

Leftists love trains and buses because it gives them control over the citizens. Cars give people too much freedom to stray off the beaten track; once people taste even a little bit of freedom, they like it, and want more.

For me, when I moved to America from Ontario, Canada, I was shocked that you could buy booze in corner stores and NOT from a government regulated store. And then I moved to Ohio where you could pick up booze at a DRIVE THRU. When you experience that level of freedom, and you go back to where you were, it's like a prison.

S.H.I.E.L.D. was created by Nicholas Joseph Fury after the end of World War II, but Fury abandoned the idea and left the draft that he created for the agency locked away, feeling the U.S. government wouldn't approve the formation of such an agency. At some unspecified point around this time, however, a United Nations-based international group dusted off the idea without Fury's knowledge. His recruitment to the post of executive director (the agency's second) marked his first knowledge of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s existence.

She also wants to be able to own a farm, and she thinks chemical engineering is a good career.

Grandson wants to coach. He is also a good student but is more of a social genius. For example, he didn't like being on a losing soccer team in middle school, so he recruited a bunch of Chin immigrants and Hispanics to join the team. His idea is to go wherever he can get a full ride, so he is taking math and science classes and is advanced placement in the humanities. Hopefully he will get ascholarship. If not, grandma has saved some money. And the kid is working as a bus boy right now.

Youngest one is not sure what she wants to do yet.

The line about liberals always choosing the "evil over the good, the ugly over the beautiful...." is the exact phraseology that Prager has been saying for decades. The liberals will always choose the profane over the circumspect, the lesser over the better.

Prager has mentioned the "F you" song receiving awards many times. He talks about the ?? museaum of art that has a 25ft tall "art" piece of a dog taking a whizz with a yellow stream and puddle. That is art to liberals.

I'd buy that argument but think it constitutes only part of the truth for some of the people who adopt plainly unworkable ideas. At bottom, there is this idea that perception is reality; rather, that an Ideal World can be achieved simply by convincing enough people that facts don't matter and reason and truth are archaic, patriarchal constructs. Essentially, a glorious new world will come about by means of collective wishful thinking.

Remember O'Brien's torture of Winston Smith in Orwell's '1984'? 'How many fingers am I holding up, Winston?' Orwell understood the totalitarian mindset better than anyone. That's what we're talking about here, after all: the authoritarian impulse, the will to power.

By the way, anyone who gets between an authoritarian ideologue and his dream better watch his back.

At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.

Corruptio optimi pessima.

It was why the founding fathers believed it essential that the republic remain anchored to natural law, religion, etc.

And why the left has targeted precisely that anchor, trying to introduce the corruption so as to undo the republic.

Imagine a republic where public education was a "classical" education for all persons? Children exposes to philosophy, language, and science from the youngest of ages, etc.

The saddest part is not what was, but what could have been.

422 Truman,

If you have time, look at why the NRA is so effective.

They negotiate like middle eastern merchants.

They always ask for more, they always push the boundaries, they never apologize. What's mine is mine, what's yours is open to negotiation.

You say gun free school zones? They say we need armed guards and teachers at every school. Etc. The goal isn't to reach a middle ground, it's to win a zero sum game.

Makes you wonder the goals of bunches of DC folks, huh? Almost like they're trying to advance leftism.

As this relates to your project, that's one of the real strengths of outside PACs and committees. Not only is the public debate more easy to influence than folks realize (Rand Paul moved pulling 50 points on drones with his filibuster), but you have the versatility to set the terms of the debate. Once you do that, you've already won.

427
The next major activity was the creation of a play about AIDS. The class first learned what a play is, through reading short plays from another community literacy program (Community Language Services Project. 1986) and discussing plays they had seen.
Through this they became familiar with the elements of a play: conflict. resolution, character, dialogue, setting, plot. They studied the related vocabulary, developing spelling and word analysis skills.

They then defined the key conflicts around which the play would center, taking them from the real life Issues faced by class members. These involved testing, talking to friends and relatives about HIV positive test results, finding support, and making decisions. They improvised dialogues around these conflicts and soon characters emerged. Working together, class members then wrote down the lines of the characters, reconstructing the entire dialogue. Finally they developed a plot structure, through working with sequence, character development and play structure. The class named the play "Our Play."

The ABE class performed the play six times for different segments of the prison population. And, per suggestions of the Superintendent, all the Facility counselors were asked to view it. A video of the play was also made.

The impact of the play within the prison was enormous because it opened up discussion about AIDS. breaking a silence that held back fears, shame, and questions. Within a few months after the play was shown, a group of women in the prison began to develop a program of peer counseling and education about AIDS. The women in the ABE class knew that the play contributed to the development of the AIDS program. And they knew that their use of literacy ability-the reading and writing about AIDS and the writing of the play-had made a difference on a common crisis, AIDS.
I know she has a lot of cited works alongside this project, and she made sure to describe their results in terms of skills acquired and methods employed. And I'll grant it did some of the participants good. Good for her.

I just wonder if it shows more intellectual depth than, say, taking city-slickers into the wilderness and filming them learning how to camp. Maybe if Sarah Palin learnt to cite a few pointers from Marshall McLuhan, she could teach at Columbia too.

428 Being nervous, and embarrassed about my upcoming colonoscopy, and on a recommendation, I decided to have it done while visiting friends in San Francisco, where the beautiful nurses are allegedly more gentle and accommodating.

As I lay naked on my side on the table, the gorgeous nurse began my procedure.

"Don't worry, at this stage of the procedure it's quite normal to get an erection," the nurse told me.

"I haven't got an erection," I replied.

"No, but I have," replied the nurse.

438 I hate the commie cock sucker too, but his show is number one in the time slot for near 5 years. As much as he sucks, and a non-cocksucking commie would be better, he isn't going anywhere.

That's because a test pattern on FNC beats the other networks.

He is a ratings sink. This is last night:
5pm: 1962
6pm: 1685
7pm: 1570
8pm: 2128
9pm: 1663
10pm: 1504

And the demos go the same way. Special report doesn't do really well, but FNC needs that show because of its quality.

There's no reason to keep Shep.

There are millions of us, trained in the use of weapons and accustomed (at one point in our lives, anyway) to overcome adversity and hardship. Many of us have been shot at by people who knew what they were doing. The liberals pose no threat. We will survive the burning time and thrive in its aftermath. Now, we tolerate the liberals in the service of our nation and our Constitution. Take the rule of law and the Constitution away, and descend to the rule of men and the law of the jungle, and guess who wins. I don't worry about how their project ends at all.

Wishcasting. Fantasy. Foolishness. If our cold civil war goes hot, there's no way to know what will happen except that a lot of good people would end up dead.

It reminds me of accounts of the First Battle of Bull Run at the beginning of the old Civil War. Spectators gathered around the field just prior to the battle to watch the show, to admire the pomp and pageantry. Some brought picnic blankets and lunch and sat in the grass. They were scattered like chaff when the battle started and bullets and cannonballs starting whizzing around. Some people prior to the civil war knew what war was about, like William Tecumseh Sherman, and knew how bad it would be--said how bad it would be to anyone who would listen. No one listened.

And that bit about 'thriving in the aftermath of the burning time'? I wouldn't call scrounging No Man's Land for canned food and potable water 'thriving'. Remember things like famine and plague? They're like a forgotten B-list garage band ready for a comeback. And do any of you Let It Burn advocates honestly believe our foreign enemies will take a timeout while we fight among ourselves?

Stop wishing for this shit.
