So This is Cool and/or Sweet

Bubba Watson is teaming up with Oakley to create a golf hovercart. This seems like they're just having fun, but it could actually prove useful since hovercrafts wouldn't tear up the course like traditional carts do. Either way, I want one.

Video below.

[Update] Since this is so close to April Fools': Bubba Watson’s hovercraft golf cart is apparently not a joke

Sure, it's expensive and largely impractical. On the other hand, shut up.

7 Golf course have 'cart paths' -- which are situated close to the fairways and greens so people don't have to walk too far. People who claim to golf for 'the exercise' don't need hovercrafts.

Cool maybe, but a waste of money. On a cost per hour basis they'll cost a fortune to run. Because overcoming gravity, no matter how weak a force, is costly. Golf carts run just about forever on a bbq tank of propane.

It's a solution in search of a problem.

Back in the 1960's a famous designer of American model airplane engines, Duke Fox, demonstrated a hover platform which he stood on and drove around powered by one of his 0.36 cubic inch model engines. Duke was in the 200lb range, and the .36 engine he used cranked out a tad under 1hp.

Of course. F=MA isn't just a suggestion, but the left capacity and velocity of the cart is considerably less.

At the speeds a Navy LC is rolling at, aerodynamic drag starts to become a factor as well. Drag is related to V-squared, so much above say 20mph or so it starts to become a player in the power needs. At 50 or 60mph, its a big player.

202 I wish I would have read this thread before I headed off to AK.

I doubt it would have helped.

Hey, I've been against shooting black bears unless it is currently trying to eat your liver.

I knew a guy who shot a black bear once. He said it looked him the eye,
like "Why would you shoot me?" He sold his guns and never hunted again.

I'm sympathetic. My grandfather shot a black bear, which rolled on it's side and groaned in a fashion that seemed so human that my grandfather never hunted again. It stayed with him. On the other hand, he would slaughter a hog without blinking.

I think that is exactly what my buddy felt. It was like shooting a human that didn't mean him any harm.

210 Looks like it requires a jetway to get out of that thing.

Also it needs more of a swampboat feel.

211 Hovercraft only work on level surfaces, like water.
Think of an Air-hockey table, and how friction-less it is.
Imagine playing Air-hockey on a flat but inclined table = fail.
Imagine playing on a non flat, inclined, and wavy (golf course like) table = no way, ever!
The same goes with Hovercraft - not too far up the beach slope from the flat water, ever!

212 But it is totally real, just uncontrollable as hell!

213 Great, now build a carrier hovercraft that carries 3 of these babies inside with a launch ramp, put an awning over the main deck, add a full bar with a live band, and you got Jabba's Sail Barge.

215 33 times less pressure than a human foot! So it's -32 x the pressure?

216 > 117 I know, how about a12 gauge golf ball launcher!

Actually, here in South Dakota, there's an unofficial game called Shotgun Golf. Farmers go out to a field and shoot at golf balls. Different size shot for different trajectories are an option, but really not many rules...
