| Overnight Open Thread (3-19-2013)It turns out that Sen. 'Lieawatha' Warren's call for a $22/hr minimum wage was even stupider that it sounded and that $22 was a cherry-picked (and exaggerated) number. Whether you use inflation, the CPI or even 50% of the average wage as an index for the minimum wage, the numbers come out to far less than $22. If the minimum wage in that year had been indexed to the official Consumer Price Index (CPI-U), the minimum wage in 2012 (using the Congressional Budget Office's estimates for inflation in 2012) would be at $10.52. Even if we applied the current methodology (CPI-U-RS) for calculating inflation - which generally shows a lower rate of inflation than the older measure - to the whole period since 1968, the 2012 value of the minimum wage would be $9.22. (See Figure 1.) Using wages as a benchmark, in 1968 the federal minimum stood at 53 percent of the average production worker earnings. During much of the 1960s, the minimum wage was close to 50 percent of the same wage benchmark. If the minimum wage were at 50 percent of the production worker wage in 2012 (again, using CBO projections to produce a full-year 2012 estimate), the federal minimum would be $10.01 per hour. Even the report that Warren likely got the number from doesn't quite go that high, and it notes that $22/hour would actually put the minimum wage above what the average production worker makes today. Since 1968, however, productivity growth has far outpaced the minimum wage. If the minimum wage had continued to move with average productivity after 1968, it would have reached $21.72 per hour in 2012 - a rate well above the average production worker wage. And no where is there any justification for why the minimum wage should follow average worker productivity. The fact that most jobs now involve computers and other technology doesn't mean there's suddenly extra value to an hour of flipping hamburgers or mopping a floor. It has about the value as it did back in 1970 and the chart and minimum wage reflect that.
"Isn't it a strange thing that in every period of social unrest men have the notion that they can pass a law and suspend the operation of economic law?" Okay the knife auction may be over but there are plenty of other government stuff available including guns, ammo, fork lifts, election booths, and fire trucks. So the The Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute (DEOMI), part of the Defense Department, created this video on stopping and preventing rape and other violence. The video opens with a depiction the brutal rape and murder of Kitty Genovese. Genovese was savagely attacked and stabbed multiple times. Her cries for help were ignored by numerous neighbors. At one point, her attacker left the scene, only to return several minutes later to rape her and repeatedly stab her again. Of course as long-time readers of the ONT know pretty much everything you've been told about the Kitty Genovese murder is untrue. So using it as an example of people standing by during a crime is wrong on multiple planes. And beyond that this video doesn't really given any practical advice other than to get involved. Plus even their video example is somewhat ambiguous - if I see a guy slumped on the stairs of a public building, my first decision is whether he looks homeless or not. If not, then yeah I'll check on him and/or get someone else to. But if he's a homeless type I won't bother. Why? Because I'm heartless and cruel. Also because I know that nothing will be done other than to encourage him to move to a different building or at best a short trip to the hospital on the public dime to deal with the side effects of his own mental illness/drug abuse. So in this case I'm an experienced and informed bystander who's been down this road before. If only real life situations were as clear-cut as seeing someone in act of murdering a woman. Reading the GOP's "Autopsy Report" and listening to many of the talking heads saying they need to change their positions to get more voters reminds me of when I was a kid in school. Occasionally I would say or do something I didn't really want to so I could be friends with some cool kids. I found that most of the cool kids were really dumb ass shallow jerks and I would end up feeling dirty and stupid, and sometimes lose real friends by doing so. So the GOP seems to be doing the same thing. "Okay we'll change our positions and our beliefs on A,B,C,.....X,Y,Z. Now won't all you cool kids vote for us? Oh, and all our long time friends/voters, suck it up. Were else are you going to go?" Well GOP, you just might find out. I'm not naive. I know that living within the confines of the constitution, valuing the individual more than the collective or "group", wanting a smaller, less intrusive, more responsible government will be painful (as if what's being done now isn't already painful) and probably isn't even possible with today's society. Friends and family have called me a cold-blooded hard-hearted s.o.b. because of my beliefs. But that's okay. If compromising my beliefs means I get to sit with the cool kids, then no thanks. I'd rather sit at the far corner table by myself. Posted by: ExSnipe at March 19, 2013 10:40 PM (PBm/l) 16

OK, serious question. Well, sincere question. How does someone get PTSD while serving on a modern submarine? Saw some story on Animal Planet about dogs being used to help PTSD sufferers and the example they gave was a former submariner. PTSD isn't just for combat. Chances are the $22 adjustment for "labor productivity" used output per hour, which is a horrible measure of labor productivity because it assigns all productivity change to one factor of production. In other words if capital became more productive, or "total factor productivity" increased, even if labor productivity fell, output per hour would still apportion all of that increase in output to labor.
The only way to really measure labor productivity is to fit a series of firm- or industry-level production functions to factor input flows (with labor this is easy, with capital service flows it's hard) and output flows and estimate the parameters of the production function. Long division won't cut it. Posted by: DrSteve at March 19, 2013 10:54 PM (wwKgz) 69

hi all
And no where is there any justification for why the minimum wage should follow average worker productivity. The fact that most jobs now involve computers and other technology doesn't mean there's suddenly extra value to an hour of flipping hamburgers or mopping a floor. Please don't confuse wages with value. That is what the Marxists got wrong with their stupid labor theory of value nonsense. Wages represent the price at which buyer and seller of labor are willing to agree, regardless of the 'value' that the laborer adds to whatever he/she is laboring on. So "dirty jobs" laborers may add more value to the eocnomy than professional athletes and yet get paid less because that is what the market has determined. So "dirty jobs" laborers may add more value to the eocnomy than professional athletes and yet get paid less because that is what the market has determined.
Absolutely. The total area of consumer and producer surplus has no relationship to the actual market-clearing wage level. It's easy to visualize a case where a high market-clearing wage produces little consumer and producer surplus and a low market-clearing wage produces tons. Depends on the shape of the curves, as so many things do. Posted by: DrSteve at March 19, 2013 11:22 PM (wwKgz) 160

$22 per hour as a minimum wage? FWIW, the starting wage for a roughneck on a drilling rig here in Alberta was $22/hour, last time I checked. You work 14 days on, seven off, of 12 hour days. That's 84 hours per week. Forty of those at straight time, and 44 at time and a half.
Of course, they expect you to actually work, and get dirty doing so. Still damn good money for a job you can walk into off the street, with no more training than the mandatory PITTs course. So has the horde already discussed how fun it will be having these group sessions with their Dr's.
http://tinyurl.com/ckmt5kr "With an estimated 27 million people expected to get insurance coverage in coming years as the federal health law's mandate kicks in, group medical appointments may help ease a shortage of primary care physicians, proponents of the practice say. Group medical appointments can work for all kinds of routine care — from post-surgical joint replacement follow-up to chronic conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease. In 2010, about 13 percent of family physicians reported conducting group visits, more than double the 6 percent that did so in 2005, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians. In a typical group visit, a doctor, often helped by a nurse, sits down with as many as a dozen patients for up to two hours. Each patient gets a chance to ask questions and listen to others' concerns. The doctor facilitates the discussion. ---- "If you like your privacy with your doctor,.. Uh, fuck you. Someone else's predicament is not my problem unless I say so. Anything else is force applied to the unwilling.
Agreed. I'd submit that God asks, rather than forces, us to make it our own say-so. Again, I know many of you have worked hard, and deserve what you've got. I know many of you give generously to private charities. But please remember there are plenty of poor people who work hard, too. Two, three jobs, 100-hour weeks. I'm saddened if a disdain for government redistribution gets turned into a disdain for the poor themselves. Things like "this is America, poverty IS always self-imposed" from someone who was born healthy and able, and has had a little luck...well, that's just ignorant. You're missing a huge difference between a poor person and what maet described as "the homeless type". We can go round and round about how much addiction (which does drive the vast majority of living-on-the-streets homelessness) is a choice, but it's quite different from run of the mill poverty that people who simply weren't raised well fall into, and it doesn't respond to intervention the same way. The homeless type has to choose help.for himself, or it really is a waste. The ordinary down-on-his-luck guy is different. From no penis, to one made out of his arm. The pendulum swings a wide arc for that guy. The doc recommends a new therapy where they implant a section of baby elephant trunk. They guy has the money for the surgery so he's all "sure, let's do it!" After the recovery period, he wants to try out the new organ, so he makes a date with a beautiful woman and they go to dinner. They're having a pleasant evening in the restaurant when a gray blur pops up from under the table, grabs a dinner roll and disappears. The lady is.....impressed. "Can you do that again? And HnR Block just reminded me that Uncle Sam wants his pound of flesh (especially, I'm sure if it's CA or NY involved) from any American filing his taxes from here:
When it comes to filing taxes in Canada... Things can get a little sticky for Americans. So, to all of our American residents, here are a few things to remember come tax season • A Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FBAR) must be completed by U.S. persons who have signing authority for a foreign financial account, including a bank or trust account, if the aggregate of accounts is more than $10,000 at any point in the year. • The FBAR must be filed by June 30, as there are no extensions for filing. June 30 is not accepted as a filed by date. • Failing to file the FBAR can result in civil and criminal penalties, including fines of up to $500,000 and a prison sentence of up to 5 years. Couldn't the apparent solidity of fan base be a factor of the TV coverage?
Especially NCAA football. They don't use the same guidelines for what games can be covered like the NFL or do they? I would bet that the reason so many appear to be so dedicated is because local stations show more local teams than other areas. Me, I love football but the constant blather these days by the seeming mandatory team of 1) one senior white guy 2) one white color commentator 3) one black color commentator just interferes with the game. They'll be yakking away about something I couldn't care less about while stuff is going on on the field. It's gotten as bad as baseball. In Football they really don't. Especially with ABC/ESPN. Most "Local" games will get played on ABC but then they will also be broadcast regionally on ESPN. This aspect really sucked for us at one point. I'm on the Indiana/Ohio border, so most network stations were out of Dayton, Ohio, and Fort Wayne, IN. Well we had Time Warner cable. And something that happened at some point was that the ABC station out of Dayton turned into an NBC station. We still got and ABC station out of Fort Wayne though. Well along comes an Ohio State game that is getting Local coverage in Ohio and Regional coverage on ESPN. Well no Ohio ABC station,, and the Indiana station isn't covering it because the OH/IN state line was the dividing line for coverage. But since we were in Ohio, ESPN was not carrying the game. One of the reasons we switched to Dish. Posted by: buzzion at March 20, 2013 02:20 AM (GULKT) 449

I really need some clarification on that "arm for a penis" story. I mean, are they what, just going to amputate his whole fuckin arm and attach it to his crotch? ...or are they going to draw a dotted cawk on his forearm and just cut one out? Is it just going to hang there, or do they plan to try and attach the "wiring"? ...and if he was born without one, are there any "connections" even available? I'm truly intrigued.

I'm convinced that the Syrian rebels would never use captured chemicals on their own people, just to get us involved. I'm also convinced that the Chinese would never hack the NORK's banks and comm networks just to stir the pot and maybe find another way to stick our stuff into the poo. Yep. Convinced. I sure am glad that the Palestinians are giving Barak such a warm welcome. They love him almost as much as we do.

I'm finding out that old 1.44M floppy disks have data retention time limits. Got stuff from the 90's that going bad with read errors. Stuff I need...that I want to update...like CPU and math chip test code.
The old 1.2M diskette media seems more durable. So does the 2.88M media. My CPU compatibility test was pretty good...back when the first Pentium came out it found bugs in the chip that Intel wasn't aware of. FML Posted by: @PurpAv at March 20, 2013 06:32 AM (/gHaE) 516
The bigger problem with the "worker productivity" argument is that it ignores both capital investment and gains to consumers.
Most gains in "worker productivity" are actually the result of their employers investing in better machines. If they had to pass all the gains on to employees, the entire investment would be wasted. No one's going to lose money for the privilege of paying employees more. Also, most gains in productivity end up creating more supply and lowering prices. If all the gains went to employees and none to consumers, prices would be about twice as high on average, meaning living standards would be twice as low. Markets work for a reason. These lurid demands for what wages "should" be always lead to impoverishment and repression. Posted by: TallDave at March 20, 2013 09:09 AM (/s1LA) 517
I doubt anyone will even see this as I missed the overnight thread, and I doubt even further it matters to anyone, but I say this as a 100%, let-it-burn conservative: I am completely in favor of the $22/hr minimum wage.
My reasoning is, fine. Fine. (Full Bob Knight rage)If you people want to elect shitheads like Barack Obama and live in a fantasy world where labor is worth what the laborer says it's worth, if you're gonna stand there and tell me that some dipshit who can't even tessellate the cheese on my Subway sandwich properly should make twenty bucks an hour, then fine. Fuck it. Do it and let's see what happens(end Bob Knight rage) Seriously. Let's let them wreck the damned thing and prove our point once and for all, as long as it can be legislatively rolled back (i.e., if they try to pass a law officially anointing Obama as King, I think that's a bridge too far, but I'm willing to let them [further] wreck the economy to prove Friedman was right). There's no way in hell Kentucky could be classified as a Big East conference fan. Loserville is/was the only KY school in the conference. At most, only 25% of the population is a Loserville fan (ex-cons, illiterate matriculates, and Eastern State Hospital residents, pretty much), most of whom live in/around the wretched place. With the exception of WKY, the Sunbelt blob, and Loserville, which should show ... well no one gives a shit, frankly ... while the rest of the state should be SEC. This is Wildcat Country, bitches!
