Democratic Senator Ron Wyden Joins Rand Paul's Filibuster;
Rubio Joins

Ted Cruz joined earlier, which is good.

But it's a bit of a feather in Rand Paul's cap that he's now shamed a Democrat to join.

Apparently he mentioned the legal concept of Outlawry, and made the point that someone deemed by the state to be in this hazardous legal state at least should have the right to be formally notified of such.

Sort of exactly the point I made.

Live: Here's an online feed.

Rubio's now up. Reportedly he began with a water joke.

This Is Exciting: Thoughts on restoring the nation's character to good working order.

58 Obama gets killed in the polls because people believe he does not show leadership. I believe he went down 6 points.

Obama starts hitting the circuit. Publicizing to the hilt, he is having lunch with Republicans. he's "building bridges", this "historic" president.

Republicans take the bait and have lunch with him. He takes it one step further and invites "conservatives". This is mostly for appearances but also to divide and conquer Republicans

Keep in mind Obama is focused on destroying the Republican Party.

Republicans fall for it. John McCain guffaws, Susan Collins wets herself from laughter.

Obama walks away. He laughs too. At how stupid Republicans, who now are winning confidence with voters, surrender to his silly antics so quickly.

Notice, nowhere does Obama say he's wrong. OR that he is going to stop falsely wielding the Sequester against the American people like an axe to make his point. He also is not about to cut spending.

Ding-dong dupes

He wanted to limit remaining debate and then go to a cloture vote on the nomination. After Rand objected, Reid threw in the towel and said that Brennan won't come to a vote tonight. Rand will talk as long as he wants now.

418 Rand Paul can't lose with this.

All he has to do is stay with this. Every republican senator who doesn't want a primary needs to get on the floor with him. He's already told Obama the way to end this is to make or send over a clear statement saying he won't violate the consitution by killing Americans in the U.S.

There is no one on the left or the right who can defend Obama's position, so Rand has this in the bag.

The longer he goes, the raspier his voice gets, if he takes his jacket off and leans into the speech, the better off he is. You can't pay for shit this good.

If only those pussies who are going to dinner at the White House would cancel to be on the floor with Rand, this would be a moment people would point to for years.

Email/call your senator asking them to join Rand now. Talk up a great game about your senator's courage in filibustering. The more the merrier. Drag it out as long as it is possible.

505 I agree with Ace's "Conversation" post but let me say more: There are points where drones could be used, but the difference is to target an action (a plane having been taken over by terrorists) and to target an individual just for bein' a terrorist.

But we, as conservatives, have always had to balance the needs of safety vs. Constitutional rights as well as things that may not be addressed in the Constitution but are still the right restraints.

It's the Left that set down the ridiculous and inflexible bars -- particularly Obama. They were the ones who said that foreign prisoners caught in an overseas warzone and brought in chains to a military base were somehow entitled to full Constitutional rights because they somehow thought that the term "US soil" was literal and they didn't understand common law.

Bottom line: The Democrats -- particularly Obama supporters -- should be going ABSOLUTELY ELEVENTY!!1!111!!! APESHIT over this and the best we get is some tepid response from a blogger or two.

An eye surgeon putting a mico lens on the constitution, the government, and the tenor of the country.

528 On "outlawry" I would remind you are Founders were all decried as traitors and miscreants. That designation was done by a monarch.

Accordingly, our Constitution saw monarchs, appropriately, as an anathema to our republic. They vested power in checks and balances purposely. It wasn't a mistake.

So unpopular as it may be, I don't like the idea of one man in our government having the power of life or death over another citizen. What checks that power? Not only that where does such power come from? It's certainly not under the presidents constitutional power. Nor do I buy the argument it's part of his duty to protect us.

Furthermore, I am a bit unclear why a "single man" is the only option. Surely there would be some consultation with Congress in advance in which, given the gravity, proof, reasoning and decisions would be explained.

I am not some bleeding heart liberal and glad Alwaki rest in pieces. But I am also a practical constitutionalist and feel presidents, and the governments sacred duty is to protect and defend this nation. But that also means our constitutional ideals and principles. I worry about the lack of checks and balances. When does that come in? Proving today's case does not mean that tomorrows wont involve democratic abuses.

602 The GOP has its own set of problem children, and
they need to be let-go. This is tough, but it's far better than another
Perot Party. Perot indeed got a lot of votes, but the result was to
elect Clinton.

Posted by: Arbalest at March 06, 2013 05:23 PM (cq7Gp)

________________
It's debatable where Perot elected Clinton. But say he did. So what? In the long run Perot helped conservatives because he was a loud voice - the ONLY voice at the time - talking about the need to cut spending and worry about the deficit. Putting aside your political blinders, which 8 year period was better for fiscal discipline 1993-2000 or 2001-2008? Without Perot, there's no Clinton. But without Clinton, there's no Gingrich/1994 revolution. And without that there's probably no late 90s economic boom and balanced budgets.

Posted by: polynikes at March 06, 2013 05:45 PM (m2CN7)

It's my recollection that the whole thing started because the feds wanted someone to infiltrate some sort of white supremist group, and they picked Randy Travis to do it. Their undercover agent intentionally entrapped him by getting him to saw the barrel off of a shotgun so as to give the agent probable cause to arrest him and bring pressure on him to help them infiltrate this group.
This is just what I recall of the events leading up to the incident. I guess my point is, if the above is true, then THEY started it.

780 Actually, they don't know who shot first. What is
known is that the "authorities" didn't identify themselves and didn't
have a warrant and were unquestionably the aggressors. Randy Weaver and
his dead family were all found 100% guiltless andhe waspaid millions in
damages. But his family was still dead.

Posted by: Andrew at March 06, 2013 05:51 PM (HS3dy)

That's right, it was Weaver, not Travis. And the rest of what you say also sounds familiar.

The agents stalking up to his home killed one of the family dogs, at which point his son shot him with a rifle, at which point one of the other agents (I think) killed Weaver's son.

It was an ugly clusterfuck, and about par for the course for anything involving the ATF. They have got to be the most incompetent law enforcement branch in US History.

"Yes they had an outstanding warrant. For intent to sell illegal sawed offed shotguns to a White Supremacy group. The law endorcement officer was killed days before the standoff. There were only a couple of law enforcement observing the area at the time. "

There was no warrant to trespass on Weaver's land. They had no warrant for the action that took place. There was in fact a bench warrant for Weaver for failing to appear in court over a year earlier. And it was later ruled that the authorities were guilty of trying to entrap Weaver and that he hadn't committed any crime.
During the incident in question, they had no warrant to breach the property or search for Weaver. They did not knock on the door and make the presence known and present a warrant. They were treating private property as public land sneaking around in the woods with guns and unmarked uniforms and ski masks. They scared his kids who then attempted to defend themelves and in the course of this a firefight commenced and Mr. Weavers children killed. He wasn't even there. He was on the property but far away from this initial incident. The noise from the firefight caught his attention and then it turned into an even bigger firefight.

He, Randy Weaver, had an outstanding warrant for sawing off a shotgun 1/4" below the legal minimum length, at the request of an undercover FBI agent. When he did not appear at his hearing, they started ramping things up, as you correctly point out as a couple of LE observing....though not the area, they were monitoring the Weaver cabin.

Weaver's 16 year old son took one of the family dogs out to do some hunting. The dog alerted on one of these observers, who then shot the dog. Boy fired off a round, turned, and fled. He was shot in the back, and killed.

Vicki Weaver was standing in the door of their cabin, with her baby in her arms when FBI sniper Lon Horiuchi put a bullet through her throat....killing her, not instantly, but dead all the same. The FBI then taunted Weaver throughout the night, asking why the baby was crying, and what happened to it's mother.

It is my recollection that the undercover Law Enforcement officer is the one who urged him to saw the barrel off. Initially Randy Weaver sawed it off, but it wasn't below the legal limit. The officer then induced him to saw it off even further, so as to make sure he could have cause to arrest him.

It was an entrapment sting is what I recall.

Part of the problem is without a doubt they have tried to suppress information. Exactly what transpired is he said, she said, and a lot of those people are dead and can't talk. From day one the government started a media campaign to make Weaver sound like some kind of gun nut, a terrorist. And still do this day that's what most people think.

800 Just read the Wiki version of Ruby Ridge to refresh memory. Vicky Weaver was killed while standing behind the door as Randy, daughter Sarah, and Harris were running towards / through it for cover. The shot blew half her face off. While holding a 10-month old baby.

The ROEs were changed by "someone" [Not Me!] and later found to be unconstitutional.

Posted by: Count de Monet at March 06, 2013 06:18 PM (BAS5M)

801 From Wiki

The sequence of events during the ensuing shootout is disputed, with Weaver and Harris saying that the camouflaged marshals fired first[3] and did not identify themselves. The marshals' version of events is when they were rising to identify themselves, they were fired on first by Sammy and Harris.[3][8] In another version of events, the Weaver's dog, Striker, was shot as he exposed a hiding Bill Degan, Sammy Weaver shot Bill Degan in retaliation, then a running Sammy was shot in the back by a dying Bill Degan and/or other federal agents.[9] Both died. After this, the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) was called in to assist with the situation. Much controversy was later generated by the fact that, after the first day's events, the FBI had changed its usual rules of engagement; specifically, "deadly force can and should be used against any armed adult male if the shot could be taken without a child being injured."[10] No request for surrender or announcement of officials' presence would be needed to shoot.[8] [9]
The next day, August 22, 1992, HRT sniper/observer teams were deployed on the north ridge overlooking the cabin. Randy Weaver, Harris, and Weaver's 16-year-old daughter Sara were seen outside the cabin. Weaver went to view the body of Sammy Weaver,[8] which had been placed in a shed after being recovered the previous day. Weaver's back was to FBI HRT sniper Lon Horiuchi. Horiuchi aimed to sever Weaver's spine for an instant kill. Weaver moved in the last split second as Horiuchi fired and the bullet entered Weaver's right shoulder and exited the armpit.[11] As the three ran back to the house, Horiuchi fired again at Kevin Harris as he ran away, but this time hit Weaver's wife Vicki in the head as she held their 10-month-old daughter Elishiba at the door.[12] Vicki Weaver collapsed on the floor, dying instantly with her bloody but uninjured daughter in her arms. Harris was hit in the chest by the same bullet. A Justice Department review later found this second shot was unconstitutional and the lack of a request to surrender was "inexcusable", since Harris and the two Weavers were running for cover and could not pose an imminent threat. The task force also specifically blamed Horiuchi for firing at the door, not knowing whether someone was on the other side of it, and criticized those who had decided on the special rules of engagement allowing shots to be fired with no previous request for surrender.[8] Much later, a robot vehicle approached the cabin and announced the presence of law enforcement. According to the Weavers, this was the first announcement of the source of the violence.[citation needed]
A stand-off ensued for 10 days as several hundred federal agents surrounded the house, in which Weaver and his three surviving children remained with Harris and the body of Vicki Weaver, under a blood-soaked blanket.[3] During the stand-off, the government force, which numbered 350 to 400 men, had named their temporary camp "Camp Vicki".[13] The negotiators who later claimed they did not know Vicki was dead would call out in the morning 'Vicki, we have blueberry pancakes.' To Sara Weaver inside with her dead mother's body, they were deliberately taunting the survivors.[14][15][16]

848 I think for times like this, a type of 'Duel-Thread' technology would be welcome. Put both thread's comments into two columns, side-by-side.

853 I think he wants to take it at least until 8pm to get on the night's prime time news broadcasts.

854 Maybe one of Harry Reid's coked up stimulus monkey cowboy poets could take a shift. We paid for the damn things after all.

855 There had better be an effort to get reinforcements there, as his effort has been heroic so far.
But, he is getting very tired.

859 NBC should show this if he reaches primetime. It would do much better numbers than the rest of their programming.

864 How long has it been since any allies stepped in and gave Rand a break?

Posted by: Katfish at March 06, 2013 06:56 PM (Nx5wc)

865 Someone was there about 15 minutes ago, for about five minutes.
Not much, but a brief break from him having to speak.

866 The guy from Ark came in a few minutes ago for a bit.

But generally no.

Jerry Moran, abut a half hour ago. Before that, it was hours.

Erick Erickson reports that they did.

870 He should go back to square one in a bit. His first stuff was gold. Maybe he'll pull out the original binder of notes for prime-time.

In late September 1981, Sen. William Proxmire of Wisconsin spoke for 16 hours and 12 minutes in an attempt to halt an increase in the debt ceiling to more than $1 trillion. He held the floor overnight, finally giving in at 10:26 a.m. Sept. 29. Proxmire, who had long expressed concern about the nation’s rising debt, hoped his action would bring public attention to the issue. (RCP).
32 years and SIXTEEN TRILLION in debt later, it's still not enough for the Libs

872 e-mail your Republican senators and urge them to step in. I don't have any Republican Senators and I already wrote to Rand and called his office.

I agree but still don't think we need to be World Police.

The R's aren't going isolationist anytime soon, don't worry.

A lot of senators are in a hot spot.

We should not be World Police but we must not turn a blind eye to threats, either. It is fantasy to believe that our enemies will leave us alone if we just leave them alone.

Is this really true? That's disgusting, the names and pictures of every
agent involved in that taunting should have been on the front page of
every newspaper in the country. They should have been fired and driven
out of society into the wilderness. My problem with the government isn't
just the power it can wield but the type of sick personality that can
sometimes be attracted to working for them.

Yes, it's all true. Horiuchi, the man that killed the unarmed Vicky Weaver, was later given an award for that action. He's now retired, and living under an assumed name.

The FBI also had a wheeled robot thing, that they trundled up in front of the cabin. It had a phone on it, ostensibly to communicate with Weaver. It had a shotgun mounted above the phone, which Randy wisely refused to use. They taunted him with that too, telling him to answer the phone....Vicky wanted to talk to him, (this was after she was killed).
