Social Media Is Hard Liquor for "Reporters"

Reporters say they just want to report the facts, but the dirty little secret is that they're chiefly interested in Reporting Themselves. They wish to advance in the pack; they wish to be the stars -- rather than the recorders -- of their stories; and they desperately, desperately wish to not merely report to you the facts but to insist upon what you should believe the facts mean.

There are too many examples of this to recount. Here's one that just caught my eye.

It's pretty clear to me Michael Scherer thinks he's a STAR...!!! and stars streak across the sky, baby.

Social media is like alcohol. It's addictive, and it reveals who you really are.

Michael Scherer can walk back and "add context" and "explain what he meant" all he likes. But he's revealed himself; he is firmly on Team Leftwing and when he's not working, he's snarking about Republicans.

Yes, his idea of "time off" is to snark about Republicans. That's not his job; that's what he does in his pleasure-time.

His point, of course, is stupid. Jindal is pointing out that rather than solve the problem, Obama is focused -- as usual -- on solving the PR problem; and Jindal, as both a high official, a politically invested analyst, and a governor of a state which will be affected by the sequester, is right to criticize Obama.

But does that mean Obama should ignore the actual problems of governance and instead focus solely on his PR pass-the-buck strategy? In Michael Scherer's world, it means exactly that, because he is engaged in the mythmaking function of fiction, and fiction has Designated Heroes and Designated Villains.

18 Reporters are worthless.

And average people don't have the same 'rights' as reporters, because it's impossible to get access that a press pass or credentials will grant the posessor.

We are all in situations where we could find out 'stuff' and report a story, but can't because of credentials and history.

For example, I could go find Sheila Jackson F'n Lee on one of her rare trips to Houston and interview her and report a story back to the horde, but there is no earthly way that I could get access to her without credentials from an organization that she knows would give her positive coverage. Even thou I am actually one of her constituents. Glory bee, I hate to admit that. And hate the feeling of living in a neighborhood that is stupid enough to elect that scrunt.

21 This is about Obama's recently appointed Chief of Staff--Denis McDonough

Source: The Swampland Time.com by Massimo Calebresi

The ugly: If youíre a reporter in Washington writing on foreign affairs and national security and you havenít been yelled at by Denis McDonough, you havenít tried very hard. Heís toned down the notorious paint-peeling tirades of his early days, but his temper remains in force and is present behind his demands on staff. Anger itself isnít necessarily a bad thing for a chief of staff: John Sununu was a famously unloved but effective bulldog in the George H.W. Bush Administration, and anger can intimidate opponents and force them off positions, setting a level of expected performance and enforcing loyalty. But curse-laden outbursts can harden opposition from those who resist intimidation on principle and can drive conflict, especially among big egos.

This is also about Obama's new Chief of Staff Denis McDonough--

Source: The Daily Beast by Daniel Klaidman

Ask a reporter about Denis McDonough, President Obamaís new chief of staff, and thereís a good chance youíll get an eye roll followed by a story about being on the wrong side of a tongue lashing. Though McDonough is said to have mellowed over the years, many Washington journalists can trade stories about his caustic broadsides and occasional bullying tactics in defense of the president he serves.

24 And Bob Woodward says it is now officially alright to go and complain about the Obama Administration. I expect a few more passive-aggressive attacks in the future, and I expect a heavy handed reaction (again). And then I expect a few more attacks. And repeat.

The administration cannot stay away from the PR game, it is all they have. And while I can understand the abuse it gives the press (the toady always receives contempt not love - see Saruman and Wormtongue), a little kindness and ego-stroking here and there goes a heck of a long way. And I am quite satisfied that concept is unknown to the administration.

Back when I was a kid I was warmonger, tool. I used to watch The Big Picture, The Twentieth Century, Victory at Sea and their ilk which were military history documentaries. I believed every word. When I grew older and realized that there was a lot of fudging of the facts, such as showing a dramatic aircraft allegedly during the Battle of Midway when that aircraft type wasn't operational until years later, I was absolutely stunned. The bias then was pro-American and, especially, pro-dramatic footage but I couldn't believe it when I found out they had been lying to me all these years.

P.S. Cronkite hosted The Twentieth Century.

133 Look here is the thing.

Woodward is believable.

How many years--has he been doing this--and he says that he felt bullied now?

IOW--he doesn't do this lightly.

Also--honestly--how does this White House do it?

Hillary Clinton --in her first sit down interview after Benghazi--when she was still Secretary of State--sat down with Barbara Walters for an interview on ABC and-

there was not ONE question about Benghazi?

Thaat's unheard of in recent memory.

All of these inside the beltway reporters--on our side--btw--saying essentially that this is no big deal have lost--

all perspective.

Again--how the hell does the Secretary of State go on prime time television after a historic attack on a US consulate--and death of a US ambassador get away with not even having to

hear one question about Benghazi--from an established reporter such as --Barbara Walters?

In that light--what Woodward is claiming-

is--absolutely--chilling.

Posted by: tasker at February 28, 2013 01:57 PM (r2PLg)

134 Hmm, interesting, ace. But far from saying the story "fizzled," I think it simply lends credence to what you're saying here. Being a "reporter" these days isn't about actually reporting the stories. It's about MAKING the stories. And you're not the only one who sees it; Rothman is saying essentially the same thing in his response to rockmom.

I find it interesting that, in all other things, the left is obsessed with "credentialism." But when that credentialism is used in a way that might damage their precious narrative, it's discarded and used as a club instead of a badge of honor. "Woodward USED to be great. But now he's just old and senile. His years of experience? Meh. He's washed up."

141 113 Bitter Clinger,

Correct, openly partisan media is arguably better for a democracy and the media because what happens is that the intelligent voter when events do not transpire according to an editorial narrative is tempted to rethink his analysis of the events being reported and strategic implications in play.

This is basic game theory stuff.

The media when challenged by partisan rivals has a responsibility to balance the best partisan gain with the proper blend of fact and PR work for their cause.

What has happened in the broadcast era is corporate domination by rent seeking agencies hiring one editorial bent.

There is one hand clapping and what does it sound like?

I am not being a nut or a psycho militia bomb throwing retard.

I have serious plans to try to build something down in Allen G's part of the world at some point. No matter what structural differences you and I have had over this decade and change of perusing each others' posts your output far more worthy of mine never forget I have always been a fan and respected you. You are definitely if not "the leader" the first among equals in many ways.

I do hope if the day ever does get dark enough in your analysis you will come south and try to make a go of things locally.

We need to try to grow something real and it will be far easier together than apart as an entire group.

The ground is choppy and the sea may be nigh unpassable but together our side of the aisle on the notion of inherent rights of man can likely weather ANY storm.

Anyway enough hyperbole I look forward to your and the CoBloggers output.

162 The media has always been biased, yes, but it has changed for the worse as the last old-style liberals have been replaced by post-modernist neo-Marxists.

The old liberals, for the most part believed in objective truth. When you accused them of bias, they got upset, not just because they were silly enough to believe they were objective and thought the accusation unjust, but because they still thought bias was wrong.

The neo-Marxists have no conscience about this. They only care about what works. They like to maintain the illusion of "objective news" because they know it bamboozles the knuckle-dragging masses, but they do not aspire to be objective. There is no Truth, no reality.

Note that Woodward got in trouble, not for (God forbid!) dissing Dear Leader, but for insisting that 2+2=4. For insisting that there is Reality.

165 You know what's funny? The MSMs ridiculous monument to itself in D.C., the Newseum. Dedicated to mythologizing the protective role of the media over democracy in American history.

My irony meter pegged when I went into that 3-dimensional sick joke while the JEF exercised his glorious reign down the street.

--This is also about Obama's new Chief of Staff Denis McDonough--

Source: The Daily Beast by Daniel Klaidman

Ask a reporter about Denis McDonough, President Obamaís new chief of staff, and thereís a good chance youíll get an eye roll followed by a story about being on the wrong side of a tongue lashing. Though McDonough is said to have mellowed over the years, many Washington journalists can trade stories about his caustic broadsides and occasional bullying tactics in defense of the president he serves.

That's from an article written Jan. 25, 2013-

I just thought it would back the Ron Fournier stuff that you wrote at Breitbart.

Woodward is an Icon.
He was played by another Icon, Robert Redford, in the movie about him.

An Icon, you guys.

And now, Barky's thralls are going to say that Woodward is...suddenly senile?

How does one get 'Suddenly Senile'?

Does that mean that Robert Redford is now...Suddenly Senile?

Is Bill Clinton now...Suddenly Senile?

171 162 Margarita DeVille,

Yup, and as I once said to Tapper "A is A" Tapper was not instantly geared to accept that there is in fact "truth." My read of Tapper is that his ethical bent is based mostly on analysis of historic precedent not a deeply pondered and reasoned read of philosophy or the understanding of the role of epistemology in the cognitive construct of "news." The Marxist media has tried throughout history to bend reality to the Party's needs and thus far because there was a beacon on the hill to crib Reagan reality always won...and relatively quickly.

I still believe reality will win, but I don't think so quickly or relatively painlessly sand our being the beacon.

Also damn it Jonah Goldberg is getting wobbly but in light of the fact that Hillary sat there with Barbara Walters--icon--and didn't even have to HEAR a question about Benghazi--right apres Benghazi--

wtf?

Goldberg needs to figure out or explain--how does the Obama White House get away with at?

192 Back when I was a kid I was warmonger, tool. I used to watch The Big
Picture, The Twentieth Century, Victory at Sea and their ilk which were
military history documentaries.

I used to watch them too. I loved them. However the caveat was my WWII combat vet Dad. He liked to watch them too, but filled in the details of how much it sucked.

It didn't make me that much less of a tool...except I probably was a bit more sanguine then the average tool when I enlisted in '68. My Dad's advice on how to survive was quite politically incorrect nowadays, but obviously valid.

196 This brings us back around to Bob Woodward. He is a master of making himself central to every story he reports. That's been very good for Bob Woodward's public reputation and his bank account. Matt Lewis tried to make this point in typical Matt Lewis fashion, planting the suspicion that Woodward was running some PR grift in this controversy just to promote an upcoming book. Jealous much, Matt.
