Lanny Davis: The White House Threatened To Deny My Paper Credentials If We Kept Writing About Them
Ron Fournier: I Got the Same "You Will Regret This" Threat

Last night, watching Obama's Valkyries swoop into attack mode to defend their Siegfried, I speculated on Twitter:

Allah gets the tenor of the Juicebox Mafia's defense exactly right:

Younger reporters were tweeting last night that they get angry e-mails from political flacks all the time and that it’s no big deal, which is a nifty way to humblebrag about how they’ve upset Power by speaking Truth while also serving the liberal cause du jour of discrediting Bob Woodward. (Some serve more bravely than others.)

He quotes there a USA Today reporter who seems to me to be doing the humblebrag/we get this all the time thing:

All we can say is: We know more than a few reporters have received similar e-mails from White House officials. Yelling has also been known to happen.

Tension between presidents, presidential aides, and the people who cover them is inherent and has been around as the government itself.

But I thought Ari Fleisher cautioning people to observe the general rules of political correctness ("We have to watch what we say") created a "chilling effect" on the press which the Republic could not abide. Now it turns out it happens every day.

The things you learn.

But now former Clinton aide Lanny Davis reveals an unambiguous and tangible threat.

A day after Woodward's claim that a senior White House official had told him he would "regret" writing a column criticizing President Obama's stance on the sequester, Lanny Davis, a longtime close advisor to President Bill Clinton, told WMAL's Mornings on the Mall Thursday he had received similar threats for newspaper columns he had written about Obama in the Washington Times.

Davis told WMAL that his editor, John Solomon, "received a phone call from a senior Obama White House official who didn't like some of my columns, even though I'm a supporter of Obama. I couldn't imagine why this call was made." Davis says the Obama aide told Solomon, "that if he continued to run my columns, he would lose, or his reporters would lose their White House credentials."

Bonus: Obama hatchet man David Pflouffe works energetically to spread the word that Woodward is an old horse who should be put down for glue.

Well there is surely in no way a campaign afoot to make sure Woodward "regrets" his reporting that Obama conceived and created the sequester.

I mean, that's just silly.

Ron Fournier: I Got The Same Threat. Yup, that's what they do.

That's why I'm not buying the 'younger generation' excuse; these kids had it pounded into their heads that Woodward brought down a sitting president because JOURNALISM.

13 Hell, this is nothing. The worst by far is yet to come. Keep in mind Obama & Co. no longer have to be worried about a reelection campaign.

At this stage they have three primary objectives: (1) continue a divide and conquer campaign using the detached and cocooned demographics of the conservative, quasi-conservative and faux pseudo conservative chattering classes to destroy the GOP as a viable national political force, (2) crush any holdouts in the Democrat media that might have the gall to stand even partially in their way, (3) further impose socialism as national policy via federal agency regulations and executive orders.

It makes an actual difference who's in charge.

Even hearing Bernstein's name reminds me of reading Live From Baghdad, about the CNN reporting during the first Gulf War.

Bernstein showed up at some point during the run-up to the war and was treated like a huge celebrity, with the various people asking him to reveal Deep Throat's identity.

I guess all they needed to do was ask his kid, considering the beans got spilled at a fucking summer camp years before Felt's family revealed his role.

The Juicebox Mafia is trying its best to make this yet another generational fight. Obama's "truthiness" is just fine with them, because it serves a higher cause. If you don;t agree, you are just old-fashioned and quaint, and we don't have to listen to you because we don't listen to anyone over 40. This appears to be the case with the entire younger generation of so-called journalists. It is scary and depressing to think where this leads us.

22 I'm really hoping the White House provokes a big backlash among liberal reporters who dare to question anything they say.

Anyone ever notice that when the noncommunist left broke with Stalin, when they have anything bad to say about Stalin, it always seems to be about the Purges?

Stalin ordered the forced starvation of millions of Ukrainians. That wasn't the deal-breaker. Millions of kulaks murdered or exiled? Meh. Hard things have to get done to build a better society.

But shooting a much smaller number of loyal communists? What a monster!

What I'm getting at is, it had to happen to people they sympathize with, before they got worked up.

(I am of course not comparing our president to Stalin - it's the principle of highly selective outrage that I am invoking here.)

42 #13 Actually the hysteria over this tiny sequester is extremely telling.

The White House is in panic mode for two reasons: First, because Republicans by design or default have called their bluff, and if they hold, this means Obama will never again be able to force Republicans to choose between taxes and defense spending. Second, even small domestic cuts will force fights between the liberal client groups that are barely holding together their coalition. The Democratic coalition is actually much closer to splintering than the Republican coalition is. So it is of ultimate importance to avoid any real cuts in spending.

The loser of this argument has really lost something of great importance. That is why the rhetoric has become so nasty and bitter, and why they are willing to go after even an icon like Bob Woodward to keep their narrative alive.

This is also why we will never solve our spending problem. The Houston Chronicle had a letter from a Low Info Voter the other day that said the US definitely needs to cut its spending, but only on foreign aid. We shouldn't cut social security, medicaid, medicare, defense or education - you know things we need.

So long as we give money away for this, and there are plenty of arguments morally and defense related, as to why we should give away money for things like this, the LIV will continue to think our spending problem is a line-item away from being solved.

Solid analysis.

In WWII, OSS scientists came up with what they called caccolube, which was basically finely ground abrasive materials wrapped up in a condom and then stuffed into the oil intake of enemy vehicles. It would completely ruin internal combustion engines. Any ideas of what a few committed patriot-types might do to do some damage to the Chicago Machine?

These people are not unbeatable.

98 This is also why we will never solve our spending problem.

Woodward didn't say *he* felt threatened. He said he felt it was a threat.

You see, unless Woodward actually felt that his life was in danger, he's immune to Obama's threats unless he really loves cocktail parties.

But I think he realizes that the 30-year-old Woodward would have been scared shitless if an equivalent person in the Nixon administration (let us not forget Sperling is, laughably, the director of Obama's Jobs Council) had said the same thing to him.

122 Heard Lanny Davis live on the radio today on WMAL. He didn't say that his credentials were threatened, he isn't a White House reporter. He writes a column that is published in the Washington Times. Davis said the threat was to the Washington Times, that the paper could lose its creds.

This was more or less explicit with Fox News, before.

And, yes, I am sure that there is lots of arm twisting going on. The Clinton WH was famous for calling up and bitching out press people, or cajoling to hold or dismiss stories.

But to say to Bob Woodward, about his reporting - which isn't actually recent, because he wrote a damn book about this last year - that because you have reported this fact, you are going to regret it?

As editor-in-chief of National Journal, I received several e-mails and telephone calls from this White House official filled with vulgarity, abusive language, and virtually the same phrase that Woodward called a veiled threat. “You will regret staking out that claim,” The Washington Post reporter was told.

Once I moved back to daily reporting this year, the badgering intensified. I wrote Saturday night, asking the official to stop e-mailing me. The official wrote, challenging Woodward and my tweet. “Get off your high horse and assess the facts, Ron,” the official wrote.

I wrote back:

“I asked you to stop e-mailing me. All future e-mails from you will be on the record -- publishable at my discretion and directly attributed to you. My cell-phone number is … . If you should decide you have anything constructive to share, you can try to reach me by phone. 174 ACE - you acknowledge that Sexton has kept the focus on the sequester origin, which is where I think the story should stay. The threat angle has put this back on Obama's turf. But I can understand that this was maybe a hail mary, the origin story probably wasn't going to be that important. This threat stuff, particulalry with Woodward leading it could have been big. But I'm afraid it will simply die out unless we have real proof of real threats.

181 If enough of these come out, and assuming Woodward doesn't backtrack or cave, we might see a second Nixon.

The thing that really pushed the media into crucifying Nixon (Watergate didn't have a body count) was that he wasn't friendly with them. Even Reagan was on good terms with most of the WH reporters. So when Watergate broke, no one even considered giving Nixon and his team a say until well after they'd found him guilty in the court of public opinion.

To say that a mass defection of the media will hurt TFG worse than Watergate hurt Nixon would be an understatement of epic proportions. The ONLY thing he's got is favorable media coverage. The LIVs give him a pass because the Media play the role of his Palace Guard. If they stop, you can expect the pitchforks and torches to come out.

Which is also why the White House and their Media Mouthpieces are moving so hard to squelch this. If they don't succeed, they're screwed. And not just the WH, but also any media outlets who defend TFG to vociferously.

182 I feel like Allah might be missing the point here though.
Even if it's such a veiled threat he can't see it, it's many senses a threat. (although cloaked as friendly advice.)

It's not up to the president (or his staffers) tell journalists what to think or even report. Woodward laid out his opinion (that the president moved the goal posts) and supported it. If the president wants to refute that, let him in the marketplace of ideas.
But rather Sterling is trying to get Woodward to retract (presumably because he can't win in the marketplace of ideas, but also because a retraction would be a far greater victory.) He's doing so by implying as a friend that Woodward is wrong and that the facts will bear them out when completely revealed (without actually revealing any f'ing facts.)

Is it a direct threat (e.g. "we'll bounce your credentials") meh, not really. But it's certainly an attempt to get him to change his mind based on fear of losing credibility (which is how I think Woodward took it.)

One angle I have not seen yet is that, if such a minor hiccup in federal spending is supposed to inexorably lead to armageddon, cats and dogs living together, etc., doesn't this mean that the federal leviathan might be doing too much, such that it is time for the central planners in Washington to cede control of the power of the purse back to the states in the form of reduced tax rates, rescinded mandates, and generally reduced interference by the officious busy-bodies from a far off land?

290 I'm fairly sure the tipping point for the MFM will come only if one of them gets fired for his/her coverage, or for asking a particular question, or for otherwise pissing off the thin-skinned Preezy. Threats aren't enough, and even getting dropped from the WH press pool isn't the same as losing all access to the administration. But if you're actually FIRED for your work, then you start getting to the MFM where they're most vulnerable: their sense of self-importance. "If you can be fired for speaking truth to power, then nobody is safe!" would be their thought process.

This would be a difficult tipping point to achieve, however. First off you would need to know that the decision to fire the person in question was directly influenced by the White House. Well, these emails and phone calls and conversations they've had with various reporters and journalists is enough to prove that they aren't shy about voicing their displeasure.

More difficult would be getting past the reporter's editor and/or employer. Only a very, very stupid person would say, "Look, the White House didn't like XYZ, so we've got to let you go." Such naivete might come from a twerp like Tina Brown, but from a bonafide news organization like WaPo or NYT (for a given value of "bonafide")? Much trickier.

295 From Gene Sperling to Bob Woodward on Feb. 22, 2013

Bob:

I apologize for raising my voice in our conversation today. My bad. I do understand your problems with a couple of our statements in the fall — but feel on the other hand that you focus on a few specific trees that gives a very wrong perception of the forest. But perhaps we will just not see eye to eye here.

But I do truly believe you should rethink your comment about saying saying that Potus asking for revenues is moving the goal post. I know you may not believe this, but as a friend, I think you will regret staking out that claim. The idea that the sequester was to force both sides to go back to try at a big or grand barain with a mix of entitlements and revenues (even if there were serious disagreements on composition) was part of the DNA of the thing from the start. It was an accepted part of the understanding — from the start. Really. It was assumed by the Rs on the Supercommittee that came right after: it was assumed in the November-December 2012 negotiations. There may have been big disagreements over rates and ratios — but that it was supposed to be replaced by entitlements and revenues of some form is not controversial. (Indeed, the discretionary savings amount from the Boehner-Obama negotiations were locked in in BCA: the sequester was just designed to force all back to table on entitlements and revenues.)

I agree there are more than one side to our first disagreement, but again think this latter issue is different [sic]. Not out to argue and argue on this latter point. Just my sincere advice. Your call obviously.

My apologies again for raising my voice on the call with you. Feel bad about that and truly apologize.

Gene

CBD - they may well try, sooner or later the American people get it right. Isn't that what Churchill said? I'm an optimist on all this, maybe it is misplaced faith in the American people (the case for that is certainly strong).

The 2014 election sure will be key won't it. If it doesn't go Obama's way, the media will start getting attached to the next shiny object - Hillary. Do they turn on Obama to make her look good, or continue to try to prop up a failed presidency that makes it harder for her to make her case against an opponent who says we need new leadership after 8 years.

I've made up my mind about Rand Paul. Paul made that vote in order to appease the, ahem,'anti-Zionist' faction of his father's true believers--a move he thought he needed to make after making that statement a few weeks ago where he said we should militarily intervene if Israel is attacked. Rand Paul thinks he absolutely must have their support (and organizational structure) in order to win the nomination when the time comes. It was an unprincipled move, in my view. I've got no use for him as a candidate and even less for the antisemitic wing of the Luap Nor cult.

If you want to look at it as premeditated character assassination, it would go something like this.

1) The country is still mired in suckitude. Obammy's illustrious reign hasn't fixed a g-ddamn thing.
2) The only reason the American people aren't hollering about this like crazy is because Obammy's media watchdogs are covering his ass at every turn.
3) Get the media to turn on Obammy.
4) The media proceeds to besmirch and darken the Preezy's reputation and standing with the public. They'll be looking for a new savior; someone to rescue them from the failed promises of their Mocha Messiah. But will they be forced to vote for a Republican to find their new hero?
5) The next Presidential cycle comes along, and lo, who is that on the horizon? Why it's Hillary! Hillary Clinton, fabled First Lady of the fondly remembered Clinton era! She'll restore our faith in the government, in our country, in our future!

"But what about the fact she was Bammy's SecState?" you may ask. And I answer, "Poisoning the media on Barack is just another way of getting them into her own pocket. By the time she runs, no one will remember she was Secretary of State, and the MFM won't bother to remind them."

Maybe-so, maybe-no.

I don't know that I agree with this, but it might be how the Clintons are seeing it.

1) GW Bush was absolutely hated by the end of 2008. When McCain ran- against a political neophyte with no record- it was an uphill battle just not to be seen as "The third term of George Bush" (and he failed at that). Even if he had succeeded, it would have been hard for an R to win.

2) TFG has more objective negatives than Bush did.

So it is entirely possible that:

3) If TFG gets to the end of his term still fully supported by Democrats, any Democrat running in 2016 will face the same long odds (or worse) as McCain.

If that's what they're thinking (and Heaven alone could help TFG if enough Democrats are thinking the same thing), then they might want to substitute this:

3(prime)) If TFG is taken down in disgrace and his own party can abandon him (rhetorically, at least- I'm not suggesting impeachment or resignation, necessarily), then a Democrat can run against TFG in 2016 instead of running under his shadow.

390 S. 388 would eliminate the automatic spending reductions scheduled to occur under current law for 2013 and would partially eliminate the reductions scheduled for 2014. The bill also would eliminate direct payments to certain agricultural producers, provide funding for agricultural disaster assistance, and exempt from sequestration all mandatory funding provided for the Department of Agriculture.

In addition, S. 388 would ensure that taxpayers with annual income above $5 million face an average tax rate of at least 30 percent on their income, and it would extend an existing per-barrel tax on oil production to oil produced from tar sands.

CBO and the staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) estimate that enacting the bill would increase budget deficits from changes in direct spending and revenues by $7.2 billion over the 2013-2023 period. Because enacting the legislation would affect direct spending and revenues, pay-as-you-go procedures apply.

The Senate can’t even make it deficit neutral.

391 The media cannot turn en masse on Obama.

They created him. If he were to be finally exposed beyond all denial, it would be impossible not to also notice who put him where he is. It would utterly destroy them as an institution.

There will be lone wolves who act as sacrificial offerings to make the media look like they're doing their jobs. Mostly it's going to be folks like Woodward who, really, have nothing to lose at this stage in their career. But that's it.

393 FS: Do you think it’s an individual right?

V.P. BIDEN: It is an individual right, but it is also clear constitutionally that the government can limit the type of weapon you can own. For example, if the idea was to be able to repel a tyrannical government, then you should be able to own an F-15 if you have the money to buy it, with full ordnance. But you’re not allowed to do that, and the court says you can deny certain weapons available for individual ownership. You can’t have a nuclear bomb. So it is an individual right. You have a right for self-defense against any intruder or any illegal activity being perpetrated on you, and for your physical self-defense.

396 Methinks that having a "discussion" on "gun control" while the "sequester" "waits in the wings" has had the effect of watering down the attention of the public on the "sequester."

Most folks know that DC doesn't work with a "full deck" on all thing fiscal, so one more is just noise. Add to that the "gun control" thing, they won't watch the "sequester" BS.

But turn it around: from whom do they get their paychecks? Their paymasters are all hard left (from the NYT to WaPo to CNN to MSNBC to Media Matters). As long as a reporter advances the Party's interest, he will draw a paycheck.

A more likely scenario is that the MSM will received subvention from the Feds (a la PBS) "to promote sound journalism, an educated public being important to democracy, blah blah" in which case you can forget about anything awkward for the Administration ever being outed by them under any circumstances.

399 Yeah, I just read the actual e-mails and I don't think "Threat" means what Woodward thinks it means.

I'm not saying that DC isn't overrun with Commie thugs, but this is a non-starter.

"Bob, buddy, your story might not be accurate, might want to check more sources."

"Righto, chum."

"Hey big guy, sorry I lost my temper, let's do lunch m'kay?" does not rise to the level that Woodward took it to.

404 This sounds like something I could have written. Yup. Liberal Media; Number one threat to the nation.
Posted by: DiogenesLamp

My solution would be for wealthy conservatives to pool their resources and simply buy up media outlets. It's a lot more bang for your buck than throwing money on dumb tv ads every cycle that nobody watches.

Think of the billion or so dollars wasted every election cycle. You could own local papers, local news stations, etc or go big and buy a controlling interest in something like NBC. Hell, the right people could even actually make a profit on the endeavor, look at Fox News.

I agree that the media and Hollywood are probably the biggest problem. We used to be able to overcome it (Reagan and Nixon winning 49 states) but now I'm not so sure.

We had demographics on our side back then, and there wasn't nearly the amount of people on the government dole.

The media was always liberal, but in the past there was a veneer of professionalism. It started to shatter after the Lewinsky scandal. The last election I remember where the media was "liberal, not that bad" was the 2000 with Bush v. Gore before the recount.

Now the media openly cheerleads Democrats and makes no bones it's purpose is to simply destroy Republicans.

The only solution I see is to buy up the dinosaurs. I think too many conservatives believe that all of these institutions will die because of the internet. It's not going to happen, the Networks and the big papers are always going to have a major say in the narrative, even with their balance sheets in disarray,

408 We need more Greg Gutfelds.

I've been noticing how many (real) comments Greg gets on his Facebook page along the lines of "I'm a Democrat and I don't agree with your politics but I'm addicted to your show."

I've never seen ANY other right-leaning entertainment figure get that many of those kinds of messages. And if they're watching, they're learning and some of them can be converted.

We're discussing an electorate that put people like Maxine waters, Hank "cold cash" Johnson and Charlie Rangel in office.

Logic evades them. I can't even say at this point that they vote with anything other than "D" in mind when they hit the booth.

These people are so stupid it defies reason.

415 @181

You're wrong. The Nixon/Press issue was Alger Hiss. Nixon supported Whittaker Chambers and proved that the press was wrong about Hiss. The Press never forgave him for that.

Hatred of Nixon was sort of passed down by generation. The press drummed up the hatred in the same way they are drumming up hatred towards all Republicans right now.

After I recovered from being a liberal, I decided to give Nixon a fair shake. I read a book by a guy that read all the original documents in the Nixon library and did additional research into the so-called dirty tricks. He was able to disprove it. It's like the story about Nixon being crazy in the White House, during Watergate. That story comes from Kissinger and no one else associated with Nixon at the time saw that sort of behavior. I don't agree with a lot of the things Nixon did. The press cut into him in a way that they haven't done since.

419 The fact that Bob Woodward has already brought down a sitting president must contribute to their fear of him. If he did it once...
That is probably the only thing that kept them back from ripping his arms off by now. I would call this the warm-up stage of throwing books at the back of head in class.

Of course, if we continue to see other witnesses to emerge- that cause some confusion over to join the hyena pack or pretend to ignore him.
