Happy Thursday.

It is Pope Benedict's final day as pope. In the UK, bookies are taking bets on who will be the next pontiff.

The House is apparently ready to pass the Senate's expanded version of VAWA. Just two months ago, the House was saying "no way," and taking some pretty significant lumps for letting VAWA to expire. Apparently, House GOP's thinking has changed, though I haven't heard the reason for it. No doubt they don't really want to talk about it.

There'll be a bit more drama in Congress over the sequester, but House GOP is standing firm for the moment and is even planning to keep the sequester cuts in the CR that's expected by the end of March (since there's no anticipation the Senate will get off its ass and approve a budget).

9 Student sues school after she was punished for refusing to recite Mexican pledge of allegiance.

Ironically, the school district has a policy that prohibits a school from compelling students to recite the American Pledge of Allegiance.

There is nothing “ironic” about it. The schools have been taken over by anti-American leftists and anything that is pro-American is prohibited. This school also allows students to opt out of reciting the Declaration of Independence. The only thing “ironic” about this is that the school is in Texas. But as usual, the taxpayers will be the only people held accountable.

11 Cantor warned House Republicans that if the BS Violence Against Women Act that was passed in the Senate was blocked from reaching the floor there would be a Civil War.

House majority leader Eric Cantor is increasingly frustrated with a group of House Republicans who are working against the leadership, and he’s not afraid of voicing his dismay.

IOW the “leadership” doesn’t like conservatives. No shit. So why do conservative not like this stupid bill? Well it never has been needed to begin with. Violence against anybody is already against the law and the bill overall is an unconstitutional foray into State matters. But this is why they are actually opposing it from an earlier article, which nobody mentions in today’s news:

In April, the Senate hammered out legislation that included protections for Native Americans, undocumented immigrants, and gay, lesbian and transgender victims in addition to those already protected under the legislation.

So an already shitty bill is made even more shitty and the House “leadership” will shit on you if you don’t support it. The Republican Party is getting deader by the day. And BTW, they passed it.

And like almost every bill that is written now the contents of the bill bare no resemblance to the title.

12 Why I don’t regularly go to the Weekly Standard. This headline linked from Drudge:

Budget Cuts Could Force Army and Marines to Cut 200,000 Troops

snip

It's true that sequestration is a tiny cut to total federal spending. But it is also true that sequestration is a major cut to defense spending.

Not a word of that BS is “true”. It is not a cut, it is a reduction in the damn increase and it will not “force” any damn thing. While true that Obama may use it as an excuse to cut troops, but that will just be another Obama lie.

34 Good morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. I was asked for some Shelley Winters stories, but all I can find so far in my collection are merely lists of the men she slept with. Interesting in a vicarious way, I suppose, but not really funny. This story's not really funny, either, but it's all I have right now:

Sometime around 1950, the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas made his way to Hollywood. Like any tourist, he told his host, the screenwriter Ivan Moffat, that he wanted to meet a movie star. Moffat brought him around to meet Shelley Winters, who had recently been given the role of Alice Tripp, the doomed factory girl in the Paramount picture A Place in the Sun. After the introductions, Thomas pointed to Winters' substantial rack and asked "Are they really real?" Winters replied that he could touch if he didn't believe; slowly and tentatively, the poet reached out with his index finger to touch her breast, then pulled the digit back with a nod, convinced of their substantiation. Later on, Thomas would tell Moffat that he had attempted to seduce Winters, but that she refused him "in language which was as direct as a stevedore's."

I was also asked for a Richard Harris story, which is much easier. Here's one from his early years: at the age of 17, his father ordered him to drive a truck to Dublin and be back home no later than 7.30 that night. After making his delivery, Harris naturally called in at the nearest pub for a refreshing snort. "Fuck it," he thought. "I can take the back roads and be home in no time." So Harris began sinking the pints and eventually, lit to the gills, got behind the wheel and headed home. Soon, up ahead, he saw a bridge warning "Clearance 12 feet." Thinking he could just make it, Harris floored the accelerator, but hit the thing and nearly lifted it off its pillars.

As Harris recovered from the collision, there was a tap at the window. Rolling it down, our hero saw a very unimpressed copper standing there. "Sorry, officer, I haven’t time," Harris shrugged. "You see, I'm just delivering this bridge to Limerick."

So there we are. Just little appetizers after the long stories we've had the last three days, but I hope you liked them. I’ve got new software to figure out this morning, so this will be my only post for a bit. I'll also be taking the next few days off, just to have a little time alone to write and relax. I'll be back on Tuesday; until then, I hope you all keep well, happy and healthy.

BS, read the thing. It opened the door for "regulating" anything they wanted based on it being an "ugly" gun. There was no reason to add that sentence about "common sense regulation".

S., at 179." "We therefore read Miller to say only that the Second Amendment does not protect those weapons not typically possessed by law-abiding citizens for lawful purposes, such as short-barreled shotguns." "It may be objected that if weapons that are most useful in military service – M-16 rifles and the like – may be banned, then the Second Amendment right is completely detached from the prefatory clause. But as we have said, the conception of the militia at the time of the Second Amendment’s ratification was the body of all citizens capable of military service, who would bring the sorts of lawful weapons that they possessed at home to militia duty.":::::

That is not really true with the Military. For one the Military already took close to a trillion dollar cut back in the beginning of the obama admin. That is about 40-50 Billion a year. Now with sequestration there is another 8-9 hundred billion cut ( over ten years like the first one ) but together that is a huge hit for the Military. Remember the Military is taking 50% of the sequestration cuts and it is only 13% of the Budget.

The law is what they say it is and what makes them feel good about themselves - and makes the rest of us feel lousy about ourselves.

Our elected officials have absolutely no morals and no ethical center to the law is utterly meaningless. It merely serves as their personal cudgel with which to beat us into submission.

The Founders warned of this. The law and the Constitution are only as good as the character of those who swear to uphold it. And we all know what the character of those people are.

Tar and feathers, please.

Nope. Read the sentence directly above the bolded quote:

To recap: Scalia *specifically* called out handguns and "M-16 rifles and the like" as protected under the Second Amendment. The example he gave for unprotected weapons was sawed off shotguns, like dago luparas.

BONUS FREEDOM: Heller also struck down the laws intended to make privately owned weapons unusable for self-defense, such as requiring them to be dismantled or trigger-locked.

Wow, so Democrats are immediately trying to circumvent SCOTUS' decision. What a shocker. How is this different from every other day in America? That's the process. Each law will be challenged, and the difference now is that we have TWO SC rulings to back up our challenges. Rulings that affirm the INDIVIDUAL right to keep and bear arms. If you can't see how huge a win that is, get a new prescription.

You know, that's funny, because if I'm a Lance Corporal who's discharged, that sure looks like a cut to me.

And no, Vic, there's not another option, which was my point. That would be the point you missed.

The sequestration cuts are so large that they blow through the caps that Congress imposed to allow DoD some internal budget flexibility. They can't move enough money around to stop a troop cut, because they run out of cap space before they even get halfway to the number they need to move. This is why DoD has been bitching for a year - unsuccessfully - be be allowed temporary authority to exceed the reprogramming caps. So they could avoid personnel cuts.

I don't tell you you're full of shit when you talk about nuclear power plants. Don't tell me I'm full of shit on DoD budgetary issues - because that's what I do.

187 Okay, so let me give you an update on my PAC.

I sent in the paperwork a little over a week ago, and they processed it, but they refused to establish the PAC.

Why?

They said we needed to be more specific.

1) we needed to have "Political Action Committee" in the name of the orgnization. Not "Committee" and not "PAC"

2) we need to be very specific about the activities we intend to undertake. "Political activities" is too vague, as if they don't know what that means.

3) we need to state the specific issues we will be working on. This is asinine because nobody knows which issues will be important in 2, 3, 4 election cycles.

Anyway, I've come up with an enumerated list for the purpose and for the specific issues, and I'll amend it with my filings as we go along. Fucking regulations!

And the official name will be "The Bristol County Republican Political Action Committee" but the letterhead will stay "The Bristol County Republican Committee" or "BCRC." Fuck them.

Also, the legal titles of the two main principles are "Chairperson" and "Treasurer" but we're just going to call ourselves Senior Fellows if I get my way.

We're having a meeting this morning to hammer out the reconciliation between what we want and what the state will magnanimously grant us.

The point isn't that DC prevailed. The point is that after ruling it was an individual right he added a statement that allowed open season on certain types of weapons without providing any limitations at all, other than a handgun was allowed.

And the other thing is the "practical side" of the Heller ruling. DC still virtually prohibits handguns. And so does every other large city in the US.
So we really haven't won anything.

246 VAWA was reauthorized by Congress in 2000, and again in December 2005.[5] The Act's 2012 renewal was opposed by conservative Republicans, who objected to extending the Act's protections to same-sex couples and to provisions allowing battered illegal immigrants to claim temporary visas.[6] In April 2012, the Senate voted to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, and the House subsequently passed its own measure (omitting provisions of the Senate bill that would protect gay men, lesbians, American Indians living in reservations, and undocumented people who were victims of domestic violence). Reconciliation of the two bills has been stymied by procedural measures, leaving the reauthorization in question.[7]

"Mr. Obama’s temperament is unlike anything we’ve seen on the national stage in many years. He is deliberate but not indecisive; eloquent but a master of substance and detail; preternaturally confident but eager to hear opposing points of view. He has inspired millions of voters of diverse ages and races, no small thing in our often divided and cynical country. We think he is the right man for a perilous moment "

"Meditation on inevitable death
should be performed daily. Every day when one's body and mind are at
peace, one should meditate upon being ripped apart by arrows, rifles,
spears and swords, being carried away by surging waves, being thrown
into the midst of a great fire, being struck by lightning, being shaken
to death by a great earthquake, falling from thousand-foot cliffs, dying
of disease or committing seppuku at the death of one's master. And
every day without fail one should consider himself as dead. This is the
substance of the way of the samurai."

Didn't see it but it sounds like it may be the Mack Penny Plan.

http://tinyurl.com/cf6lfq4

The Mack Penny Plan would balance the federal budget in eight years by cutting one penny out of every federal dollar spent for six years and capping spending at 18% of GDP beginning in the seventh year. If Congress fails to make the necessary cuts, the plan triggers automatic, across-the-board cuts to meet the yearly caps.

Then you don't know the one about how all those cases of "frozen feet" arose from the failure to distribute shoe-pac snow boots? Or how sergeants gave direct orders to soak the rough-out leather uppers all the way through with shoe polish, so they'd take a garrison shine? Or how if you reported in with "trench foot" you could be court-martialed for not changing into the dry socks you didn't have, but if you called it frozen feet you might get sent to the rear?

Why were the 99th and 106th stretched so thin on the north shoulder? Doesn't look like "needs of the military" to me. It was fucked up like all war is fucked up, as Schwarzkopf used to say.

They've also established that half-hour White House phone calls browbeating and threatening reporters is de rigeur.

So, shouldn't we start asking them if a) they've ever NEEDED to have the White House rein them in, and b) on what stories that occurred? IE, 'did they promise you 'access' to Michelle's entourage when she visited The View in exchange for spiking a story on, say, Fast and Furious?' Or 'we're you passive enough to willingly do that with no quid pro quo?'
